oh how can i put it? to sum it  up  the other groups (the butchies, and
le tigre)  were good but amy and the butchies together brought the house
down as usual.

amy was very friendly with fans who stuck around after the show. though
not quite so chatty on stage...i think  that since they started
a half hour late they were rushed for time.

i booted the show but it's a very bad recording,
i think i was up too close  because there's a rumbling noise  during the
songs that  isn't there during the few times amy is talking.

i got pictures of the butchies, le tigre, and
amy with the butchies, but i have no idea how they turned out. (the ones
of  amy and the butchies...well....i wasup really really close,.too
close to get everyone inside the frame, but trust me i got plenty of
amy)

and they nnounced the can the klan demo (le tigre did) to a full house,
there must have been at least five hundred people there.  i was so
pleased!

amy called shannon curfman  up, and saidthat she hadn't seen her in a
year, and they played something new i couldn't make it out.

i talked to amy as she was taking care  of  the sound system after the
show. she was on  democracy now!  not long ago, so i filled her in on
what's up with  amy goodman, (it's not good...the intmidation she is
under has gotten to the point where she is  not broadcasting  at
wbai anymore, as of today, they refusing to broadcast  it. the situation
does not look good.
and it looks as ifshe'll be fired soon. there is a rally in new york
city  tomorrow for those
who are interested in front of wbai.)

amy (ray) seemed concerned,  gave me thumbs up.  i told her how sorry i
am about her
grandma, and about her friend, she smiled and said "oh, thank you.." she
signed my autograph.

okay....she did one song that was not on stag. does anyone know what it
was? shannon curfman wasn't on it so it's not that
one.

the song that amy and the butchies played last night
that isn't on stag or from the butchies was a cover of
the tom petty song refugee.  it totally rocked!  when
my gf and i heard the opening cords we both figured
that we were hearing things and that they were just
using the riff.  very cool.

impressions from last nights show...

butchies were great. le tigre was fun at first, but seemed to go on and
on (maybe because i was anxious for amy to take the stage, but i thought
all their songs sounded the same). the amy ray/butchies set was awesome
(too short). their cover of refugee with shannon curfew was worth it in
itself.

my friends and i managed to grab the tables on the second floor. but,
there was too much chatter from the "audience" on the upper level. still
i could see amy doing her own tech setup from my vantage and there's
something about seeing amy in the small club atmosphere that just seems
right.

so when the president was here on july 4, i had the opportunity to shake
his hand. i wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not but i did it
anyway, and said to him, "mr. president, i hope you only serve four
years. i'm very disappointed in your work so far."

he kept smiling and shaking my hand but answered, "who cares what you
think?"

his face stayed photo-op perfect but his eyes gave me a look that said,
if we'd been drinking in some frathouse in texas, he'd've happily
answered, "let's take it outside." a nasty, little gleam. but he was
(fortunately) constrained by presidential propriety.

but that was the end of it, until i turned away and started scribbling
the quote down in my notepad, so as to remember the gift forever. when he
saw me do that he got excited and craned his neck over the rubberneckers
to shout at me, "who are you with? who are you with?" people started
looking so he made a joke: "make sure you get it right."  but he kept at
it: "who do you write for?"

i told him i wasn't "with" anybody and pointed to one of his staff
people, who knows me a little, and said, "ask him, he'll tell you." then
i split.

half an hour later, my boss (who had helped organize the event we were
at) came up to me and said, "did you really tell the president that he
was doing a 'lousy fucking job'?" no way, i said, i was very polite, i
just told him what i thought. fortunately, he believed me. he wasn't
happy with me, but he believed me.

but anyway, if you ever wondered if the prez really was kind of a jerk,
i'm here to tell you, he is, and i got the gift to prove it. i'm thinking
of making up t-shirts so we can share the gift with everyone:

i'm really getting tired of all the gw bashing on this list. this list is
for discussing the indigo girls, not what bush or clinton or gore is doing.
go read the mailing list faq. this is totally and completely against the
posting rules.

in addition, this post is someone else's experience and word's, not even the
posters. that is bullshit and is entirely against the rules as stated in the
mailing list faq. it's also called "hearsay" and as such, makes it totally
unreliable. i could come on here and say anything i want and you people
would all believe it? give me a break. read that post again carefully, there
are so many unbelievable statements that its laughable. this is what you
call "propaganda".

however, i don't deny this individual has a right to his opinion just like i
do. but, go join a political mailing list or something and express your
views there. don't do it here. that is not what this list is for.

i implore the moderators to start screening this stuff.

i don't post this kind of stuff and i could. it doesn't't belong here!

now that that is off my chest, let me say the following so you know where
i'm coming from:
1. i love the indigo girls
2. i'm a republican and voted for bush.
3. i'll be buying a dvd player with my $300 refund check.
4. i'm for smaller government, a viewpoint shared by republicans.
5. i don't care what people do in their private lives.
6. i'm heterosexual.
7. i don't agree with "everything" amy and emily support but i respect their
views and their right to express them.
8. if bush does something stupid or wrong (like having sex with interns in
the oval office or engaging in criminal activity while in office), then i'll
be the first to call for his head on a platter.
9. clinton is a criminal and no one can deny this. he lied under oath.
10. clinton did do some good things in office. why, because he generally was
a moderate.

please, respect the views of some of the other people on this list and keep
the political stuff off.

dave.

you gotta be kidding me. you need some serious help. a hate crime? so i
guess you'd like to throw 1/2 of the population of the united states into
prison right? how extreme can you be?

>politics are completely igc and if you don't like it, get off the list.

go read the faq. its completely not allowed. apparently, someone must have
changed it then because the one i got says clearly it has to relate to the
music of ig and the nigc is not encouraged. here is the excerpt:

"5) use private email where appropriate
remember that the main purpose of the list is to discuss the music of
the indigo girls, so if your message is private or is not indigo
girls related, it may not always be appropriate to send it to the
entire list.

this does not mean that off-topic discussion is not welcome on the
list.  on the contrary, sometimes off-topic subjects are interesting
and even relevant (for example, discussing a local band or looking
for bootlegs of certain shows).  however, please try to limit
discussion to subjects that have at least some relevance to the music
of the indigo girls"

the example of off topic stuff is not politcal bullshit. also, clearly #10
says the following....

"10) do not forward private email to the list"

that is exactly what he/she did.

flame away. you think i care and didn't expect it?

so, i guess this is what it's like to be oppressed. everyone talks about gay
rights and freedom of expression, and whatever, but when someone posts
something they don't like, they suggest they leave? that is a bit two faced
wouldn't you say?

dave.

i'm a perpetual lurker, but thought i should pipe in on this debate.

i actually like the nigc found on this list.  i only have time to subscribe
to one list, and i choose this one.  in my opinion, it is nice to hear some
of the political discussion here, because i wouldn't otherwise hear it.  i
think the moderators and list participants do a pretty good job of keeping
the discussion relevant and not letting anything get too far a field.  it
has been debated a hundred times here before..but i think some political
discussion is relevant, because many of the indigo girl's songs are driven
by politics.  amy and emily aim to inspire people to make change (perhaps
via politics) through their songs and through the examples they set by their
own involvement.

so for those of us who don't really have time to join politics@netspace.org
and gaypolitics@netspace.org, and howtobootshows@netspace.org, or whatever,
it is nice to get a taste of relevant nigc here on this list.  i hope this
continues.

by the way, if anyone missed the satire piece in the onion, about gw finding
the error in fermilab calculations, email me privately and i'll send it to
you (copied without permission).   it is pretty funny.  ;)

carry on.

ok, so please. stop now before it starts. take it to private email.

i'm pretty much in agreement with mur dog's first three paragraphs.

of course, then he went and blew it.

it's kind of like someone making the perfectly acceptable request "can we
please take all the pro-choice rally information and discussion off-list".
and following up with "by the way, i think that all baby killers deserve to
be shot and left to rot in hell".

i would insert an appropriate judge judy-ism right now, but all i can think
of is "don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining" and that's not going to
cut it right now.

ok - so what you're saying is that you can do what you want in private, but
as soon as you do something in public, that's wrong and you should be
punished?

if so, then that's what gay people have been fighting against all these
years!!!! all we want is the right to live our lives fully in public and
private - in other words.... equal rights.

i'm a lurker. i must admit that i find the dubya bashing delicious.  of course, we're all entitled to our opinions, but i believe tumbleweed to be a criminal because he and his operatives clearly stole the 2000 presidential election and he is raping our land.  theft and rape ~  heinous crimes in my book.

regardless, i pray to my higher power every night that this train wreck from texas will be over in 1,260 days...

so were any other list people there?
it was a great show, i thought.
i got there at 3 (late for me) and was 2nd in line. some woman randomly
slipped me 5 dollars to hold her place which i thought was quite odd, but
hey, i don't have a job, who am i to say no more than twice before accepting.
anyway...
i saw amy pull up in her car and went around back to geek out.  i talked with
her just briefly, not intruding i hope. she said she had road burnout and
therefore had forgotten my name again. i was like, um, i don't really expect
you to remmeber it, you meet lots of people!
if anyone wants to know the contents of her car e-mail me cause i'm a little
embarrassed that i snuck a look so i feel weird about posting it.
the butchies opened the show. they were great as always then came le tigre
and i'm still not sure how i feel about them. i guess i find the way in which
they communicate their politics to be slightly annoying. they pretty much say
you have to have this very specific set of politics and if you have one part
you have the rest (ie if you're pro-choice you must be pro- slave reparations
or whatever) and if you don;t agree with them you're basically worthless. i
like amy's style much better. when she sang "without a heart" she said that
it was her way of trying to get her mind around ways to disagree with her
southern neighbors but not hate them. it just seemed like a much more laid
back, humain style of politics. anyway
it was really funny to watch amy with her cup of tea dancing back stage to le
tigre.
she wore the shirt that wa sone the girlfriends cover or one like it and the
brown men's pants that i really love two necklaces.
she came on and set up her stuff and most of the audience was really
respectful except for the women next to me who i think made some lewd comment
to amy to which she responded sarcastically, oh that's real nice." i really
hope she didn't think i was with them. i was looking arouns the stage when my
girlfriend started tapping my arm and i looked up directly at amy who was in
front of me and she had stopped what she was doing to smile at me! i smiled
back and my gf said she'd purposely singled me out which made me really
happy.

set list:
johnny r
new song--without a heart or whatever it will be called
lazyboy
then pretty much everythign from stag i guess--don't know exact order
plus refugee
she brought shannon curfman on at the end.
they actually came back fro an encore but only played a very short butchies
song.
they didn't talk much during the show but amy thought it was really funny
whne someone shouted out "we love you alison" she was like, "can i hear that
again?"
melissa the drummer was really funny as always
someone in the aud asked amy how jennifer was and amy was like, um fine. then
said soemthign like you don't want to get into questions like that.
she asked the aud if we were okay a couple of times
i could see jennifer dancing back stage through most of amy's set. i think
connie and kim from mrs. fun, a milw band were back there as well.
after the concert the coolest girl in the world grabbed a set list for me. my
first ever complete one. i would have grabbed it myself but actually i
couldn't move too well cause i totaled my gf's car the day before the concert
and i have soemthing akin to whiplash only not as severe--not that anyone
asked. my point is that it was really nice of her to do that.
after the show we watched le tigre leave. they all seemed nice.
then kaia and melissa came out and someone asked them where alison was and
they were like, oh you only want alison. we'll go back inside. it was funny.
finally alison came out and was very nice.
i watched amy loading stuff um through the dorr for a long time and then she
walked out briefly. it was really raining by that time and she posed forone
picture for the girls in front of me and then turned to go back in. i asked
her if i could get a picture and she said okay, but hurry cause these are my
only clothes and i don't want to get them wet. she put her arm around me
which i didn't get to fully enjoy because i was busy pulling slightly away
and saying oh, you don't have to do that, i don';t want to get you wet but
then we took the picture and i said thank you so much and she said you're
welcome sarah.
um, yeah, i was a little excited.
sorry this is so long and now i feel like a complete gibbering freak of
nature so i think i won't be posting for quite soem time.
oh, i got a boot but i think it's buzzy.
the milw one turned out suprisingly well, you can hear her foot pounding the
ground during johnny r!
i also hope i got good photos.
okay bye.

the middle of a dreadfully draaaaging work day it a nice detour to open my

scan it, if it is too long or i am uninterested i don't read it.

by the way i have been listening to cons all day and had fogotten how
perfectly simplistic and beautiful "soon to be nothing" is.  what a
wonderful song.  ya'll should take a lisen.

and i get my digest mail only to read that everyone is up and arms with
dave's post.
(i don't agree either but i usually read everything and then move on).  on
the lighter side,
as i was reading all of this - that psa came on about drunk driving with the
girls. at the
end of the announcement, there's a little snippet of peace tonight and it
just struck me
funny that we're all here fighting and emily is singing "let's make peeeeace
tonight" .

so, can we do that, please - make peace??  life is way too short.

oh, and please don't drink and drive.

happy thursday

i believe that to lash out at anyone who isn't "open-minded" or
"enlightened," is an extremely narrow-minded way to function.  i am upset,
though not surprised, that most of the responses to dave's posts about
bush-bashing were angry and vengeful.  and so, i feel compelled to post in
his defense, and so regretfully post on a thread whose end was already
announced.  because this 'discussion' is supposed to be dead, please respond
privately.

assuming "discussion" is defined as the interchange of ideas, then instead of
blasting anyone who dares a variation in standard opinion, perhaps respectful
dissent would be more interesting, and more appropriate.  the person who
wrote "it is nice to hear some of the political discussion here" is sadly
mistaken if they think angered reaction to a conservative yet thoughtful post
is discussion.  dave made a reasonable point: the initial chain forward and
ensuing 'discussion' are clearly prohibited by the faq.  if many listees find
that fact unreasonable, perhaps an effort should be made to adjust the faq.

as for comparing voting for bush to a hate crime:
according to the us department of justice, a hate crime is defined as "the
violence of intolerance and bigotry, intended to hurt and intimidate someone
because of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual
orientation, or disability."  in 1995, over 7000 hate crimes were reported to
the fbi, including 26 murders, 12 rapes, over 1200 aggravated assaults, etc
-- in short, unless the candidate is hitler himself, legitimately casting a
vote for ones favored presidential candidate cannot by *any* stretch of the
imagination be considered a hate crime.  it's nice to get impassioned about
things, but let's not throw around serious terms without thinking about what
they actually mean.  voting republican is a great departure from dragging a
man to death behind your truck.

also, as difficult as it may be to believe, there are actually some
republicans who not only are not depraved, but who are actually decent people.

thanks for letting me vent.

brenda - i have the rem cd for the q magazine - you werent at nff and i

again - i am dealing with some pretty serious family stuff so dont expect

okay, i lied one more brief post.
3 things:
1 i just looked at the set list and (i can't remember if we were certain of
the title of amy's  confederate flag song, but on the set list it is called
"become you".
1b also on the set list is a song which i totally forgot they played called
"everfall. kaia sang lead on it. does anyone know if this is a butchies song
or what?
so the official order of the set list:
johnny rotten
become you
lazy boy
luct stoners
late bloom
laramie
black heart
measure of me
mtns of glory
everfall
hey castrator
on your honor (she gave a fairly long intro to this one)
refugee
and one encore
2 my friend saw them in chicago yesterday but she's not a big amy fan so all
she told me was that amy was wearing jeans and a black shirt which was the
same thing she was traveling in on weds.
3 i'm offerring the boot of the milw show to the list so please e-mail me if
you want it. it will be a pretty limited offer cause i don't have a lot of
time right now but i'll do my best to slowly reply to whoever emails me. i'm
not offering the madison one cause i just don't think it's clear enough. it's
fine for me but... eh.
okay?

i know the moderator killed this thread and i will take it too private email
but i wanted to say a quick last word to the whole list. i guess its not a
good idea to make a post like that and then not respond to anyone for 24
hours. to much happening. sorry.

anyway, i've gotten emails saying they agree/disagree/whatever...from a few
people. i will respond to each privately tonight in order to clarify my
viewpoint and put it to bed finally. i'm not ignoring you.

i probably went about expressing my opinion the wrong way and know that now.
but, as someone asked, i've been on this list for quite some time (off and
on) and i understand the fact that the music is extremely political (in
message) and that politics are clearly discussed here, however, that
particular post and the one awhile back about gwb causing the paula
poundstone thing (a joke or not) where totally over the line.

i know there are others on the list who feel the same way i do but do not
respond to these messages because of the automatic and swift backlash it
will create (in various ways). it wasn't a good morning yesterday and that
one sent me over the top.

so, i apologize to those i offended by my words. it was not my intention. i
just wanted you all to know what it feels like to be on the "other side" of
these arguments and to be on this list when only one side is presented (99%
of the time). i know its not life or death here in email world but it gets
frustrating......like anything.

peace and take care all.

dave.

hello knowledgeable group!

i need your help!  i'm a runner, and i think i want to purchase an mp3
player to use during my long runs.
i purchased a "jogger" cd player about a year ago (big mistake!), and
although it was supposed to be skip-free, it simply doesn't work for
jogging.

does anyone have any words of wisdom about mp3 players?  do they work
skip-free for jogging?  also, what features should i look for in a portable
mp3 player?
do any models come with removable memory (like the memory cards used in
digital cameras?).  anyone have a particular brand or model that they find
particularly wonderful?

any help would be tremendously appreciated.

thanks!!

i've been using musicmatch jukebox for this purpose.  it has a recording
feature that can be set to record from tapes using the "line in" recording
source.  i think you can get the software from www.musicmatch.com.  it has a
free version that you should be able to do this with, i'm almost positive.
when you download it and install it, you go to the options menu, click on
"recorder" then "source", and select "line in".  you need to connect your
tape player to your computer with a special wire, i think you can get it at
radio shack or places like it.  i'm not exactly sure what the wire is called.
when you do this, you just play the tape, and click the record button on the
software, and it should record just fine.

i love this topic - i am bummed i wasnt around when it
was originally taking place.

i am an asl interpreter.

i love the indigo girls.

if there is a deaf person that is going to an ig
concert - call the venue and request a terp.  you can
even request a specific terp... (ill do it!! smile).

what a dream job - terping the ig!  i love it!  i was
able to terp a few songs at the cornell university
show last year - what a natural high...i had so much
fun!

take it easy,

my life - always cats.

indigo!!

i call him indy for short.

i am working on middle names - malone is definitely in

he is such a good boy - and how cool is it to say
indigo on an hourly daily weekly basis??  and when
people think your puppy is so cute and ask what his
name is????  how neat is it to say "indigo"???

hey folks,

so it's a little late, but i wanted to check in with my impressions
of the michigan women's music festival (i just can't bring myself
to use the other spelling)...

amy and the butchies played on saturday night and totally rocked
out.  the set was pretty standard i think - all the songs from
"stag" plus "refugee" for the first encore and a butchies song for
the second (and third) encore.  amy also went off-stage mid-set and
the butchies did 3-4 songs of their own - "galaxy is gay" and a
couple of others.  i'm not too familiar with their stuff so i don't
know which ones.  it was all very high-energy and fun.  everyone
was very appreciative - after "refugee" (on which there were a
bunch of guests up onstage, including gretchen phillips and nedra
johnson) the crowd just wouldn't quit screaming and eventually
everyone came back to do a butchies song for a second encore.  amy
invited all the artists and volunteers to go crowd-surfing and
everyone had so much fun that when the second encore was over,
they ended up doing the same song over again as a third encore.
kind of silly, but it was a lot of fun. :)

as for the festival itself - i really didn't know what to expect
but i did end up having a good time.  i'm against the
women-born-women-only policy but i liked the incredible sense of
community.  so i guess i still have mixed feelings about it.
my musical highlight of the week - dar williams!  her set (on
friday night) was absolute perfection.

happy happy all,
sherlyn

i don't know, when amy came to mpls there was,'t a whole lot of singing
along either, but since i could see from my place that not very many
people left after le tigre, or maybe more came in, i don't know, bt the
people that were there definitely loved her music.

and she smiled and said, something like "look at the turnout.i'm
overwhelmed"

she deserves all the good luck in the world.

i wonder how emily will fare when she does her solo...does anyone know
which label she'll be on?

i also use cool edit pro but i rely on total recorder to initially record the
wav to hardrive...it is a small canadian product ($13) which has a wonderful
added feature:  it has timed record so you can set it up and it will start,
record, and turn off automatically.  think about it :)

hi all!!

i was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting group tickets for
one of the ig/atlanta ballet shows.  i am still waiting on a confirmation of
price, but i am sure there is a savings.  it would be great to sit together.
i am interested in seeing either the early saturday show, october 20th, or
the early sunday show, october 21. mm is playing on saturday night, and i
have yet to see her at her own gig, and we will probably be heading back
home on sunday.  so those are really the only two times i can go.

anyone interested?

the low point of the madison show was when le tigre said they were just playing one more or a few more, and some guy pleaded for more, yelling "we're not here for amy ray."

i'd post a review, but i think other people's comments have covered it.

it was real trippy to watch in  the wolf trap concert the interpreters. had
one interpreter that was so intense and was so good to watch her. her
expressions were so incredible beautiful. so i spent alot of time watching
them and listening to the music ... it was very nice . every show should have
one.

hello all,
our daughter, trecie, is 6 months old and loves music. of course, i
think she's partial to ig and i want to make her a couple of ig (or at least
largely ig) discs for us to listen to. i have all their major label releases
and boots that we listen to, but i'd like to make something special just for
her. i'm thinking i'll do one cd of some slower ballads for mellow sleepy
time and the second will be some of the rowdier songs for play time.
i have a few ideas for the songs to use, but i'm putting the call out
for the list to help me...i'm sure folks here will come up with some great
ideas that might have escaped me. thanks in advance for your ideas!
michelle and trecie

everyone has got to hear "you've got to show" - it's incredible.

regarding the atlanta ballet... i'm going with a group from the bbs, so
it would be cool to meet up then too!!!

love,
amy

ps - by the way, i put these plus starkville, she's saving me, and a
kick-butt version of watershed on my radio station below. if you have

hkfs,

i know we went through a whole discussion about this....i am so sorry for
bringing this up again however, i picked up a copy of the remastered rop
and, sigh, i discovered i had been struck by the "wrong liner notes"
disease. how did we end up solving this problem? i can't very well go back
to the store i got it from....i picked it up in minnesota and i live in nh!
please e-mail me privately so we all don't have to hear this discussion
again.

thanks so much!
sarah

p.s. and since i am posting i might as well add....do you all know how much
i love this list? i've been on for a little over a year now. i know we all
bicker sometimes, but the information and support that goes on back and
forth between everyone is wonderful! i'm so happy to have found a bunch of
crazy fans like me! thank you everyone!

oh, jeez, i was so wrong.  but i am remembering more of it: "ooooh, you're
like the sun, chasing all of the rain away; when you come around, you bring
brighter days..."

yipes.

sounds kinda like "crazy game."

ha!  kidding!  :)

ok, so brian clary has kindly provided us with "yield" and "she's saving me."
and now amy (http://www.indigirl.com/listen.html) adds "you've got to show"
to the list.  and i also have jude to thank for "starkville" from the wolf
trap show.  there's just two left: "deconstruction" (which is, naturally, my
unattainable favorite!) and that amy song about being from the south (the
name of which i still can't remember!).  please, oh please, you
techno-geniuses, won't you help out the high-tech equipment-impaired and
"rip" a couple more mp3's?  i've stooped to begging now.  i have no pride
when it comes to new ig material.  still filled with hope--gina
