i too feel the need to point out my live performance (for which i was
shockingly not compensated):

at 24:30 emily says: "a lot of our fans, they like to sing our songs
with us.  they know the material very intimately"

then cut to karen's sweetheart matt (tall in baseball cap, black shirt)
next to yours truly (to his left, glasses, olive shirt) as we sing
"closer to fine" in perfect harmony.  it brings tears to the eyes.

the show was more of a 'how to run a small concert venue' than a
performance show.  we did get nearly three songs.

i'm glad they showed the jetta pull up.

also it was neat seeing emily say "hell yeah!" during galileo.

if you forgot/had trouble taping it, let me know.

see ya,

michael.

hey y'all,

i have just found out that i may have to move again.  so i'm down-sizing.
one thing that has to go is my cassette collection.  i don't even have a
cassette player any longer, so i can't justify moving these again!

i certainly don't want to make a profit from these.  i know that cassette
collections have changed hands on this list before, and i think they
generally go for about $1 per cassette (to help offset the cost of the
blank), plus
postage.  hopefully that is reasonable.

with all of the mp3 trading and the cd-r offers running around, there may
not
even be any interest in these cassettes, but i thought i'd offer them up to
the
list anyway.  perhaps this is an opportunity for a newbie to get a bunch of
older stuff all at once, rather than one at a time.

below is my list of tapes.  i'd like to keep them together, just to keep
things easy for me.  so it's all or nothing.  sorry about that, but it could
just get too crazy otherwise.
i actually have two copies of each (i'm a lunatic about "back-up copies").
the second set does not include the *-ed tapes, as they have been lost or
whatever.

if interested, please let me know.  $30+postage per set, less than
$1/cassette.

it will be somewhat heavy to ship, as the combined weight for each set is
about 9-10 pounds.

cheers,

melissa

four or five years ago (pre-lilith faire) i was asked that very question
by another local promoter - the answer was never more apparent than
during my annual birthday bash this past sunday....

fifteen featured performers graced the stage during the course of the 7+
hour show, before perhaps the largest and most diverse crowd ever to
attend one of these musical celebrations....

the stories are many, the memories are eternal, the love and friendships
shared are priceless commodities in today's often cold, impersonal
society....

for 7+ hours on a sunday night in buffalo, this small, oft-maligned
corner of the world became a much better place....

what was that question again????

uhm hi.

i'm just taking a second of your time (and a few k of your bandwidth) to
tell y'all about the most lovely slow-buzz soft-drone lo-fi emo-core
blues-tinged bitter-tint folk-ish edith frost.  so what if you've never
heard of her?  *i* have (she's from the whole weird chicago music scene that
spawned rose polenzani and shelley miller, mm hm) and i'm gonna make you go
look at her site because i really really am sure you'll like her.  think
tara jane o'neill or lisa germano or kristin hersh or cat power or rose p or
beth orton or any other random soothingly tranquilized and kinda depressive
art-rocker-folker-girl.  mmmmm.  she's got a tour coming up, the shows will
be small and cheap, and you oughta go.  say yes say yes say yes, because
have i ever led you musically astray?  i think not.

http://www.edithfrost.com because you love me.

and might i add that my beloved giggly and self-effacing creative writing
professor dan chaon has finally gotten the publicity (and book deal) he
deserves.  if you want a damn fine read that has the kind of emotional
resonation emily saliers can spear on the end of a pen, then puh-leese read
among the missing.  (yes i like caps or something.)  if you've been in a
bookstore lately, it's the thick white hardcover with an open empty birdcage
on the front.  he's brilliant and he's my hero.  he also likes cat power, if
that sways you.

http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0701/chaon because i said so.

random publicity maven *j

amy doing "hurt" would not be so bad...with the

<<rosie spent a lot of time making fun of her>>

gee, that's too bad, i thought rosie to e beyond that kind of thing.

after reading the interview, anne's story does sound far-fetched, but
as someone with a mental illness, i have had some very good  friends
who have experienced the kind of psychosis anne is describing, and it's
actually very painful for them, and to have someone like rosie come on
and  make fun of that, makes me wonder.

as for anne's family, well i'm not surprized at their denials at all.
it's hard to accept that the one you love has done something very aweful
to their own child,or sister and then to have that
exposed publicly and deal with the aftermath.
it must be hard on all of them, and what anne is doing must require a
lot of guts.

as for celestia,i have characters that i write about, and had i been
sexually for years and years as a child, i might be one or all of them
right now.

me: 'well hellooo.'
ig list: 'oh no, not her again.'
me:' but i actually have some marginal igc!'
ig list: 'no way.'
me: 'way.'
ig list: 'fine, make it quick.'

musician thalia zedek-- remember her, from the suffragette sessions tour?
with the black hair and clarinet and loud bluesy guitar and nicotene yowl?--
remember?  remember how she and amy rocked out together?  (hahaa, remember
the crush i had on her and how you all sent me your sst photos of her?)

well anyhow, she's got a new record out.  sorta new.  it was out july 31.
it's called been here and gone, and it's an entirely stripped-down and
mellow album of, like, torch songs.  (jami, you can actually tell what the
hell she's saying.) i found an mp3 online, and it's just her and a piano.
nice.  here, go listen.  http://www.matadorrecords.com/thalia_zedek/
she's gonna be in chicago on 10/13.  being that i'm (still) obsessed to a
marginal degree, i'm considering driving the 7 hours to see her.  does
anybody want to go or meet up or lend me their floor for a night?

and speaking of matador records, i got this today from them (mike r., this
is for you):
>>cat power - if you see someone on a billboard who looks like chan,
>that's cause it is her
>
>chan marshall, fresh from a multi-page fashiony spread in new york
>magazine, will be featured in an upcoming campaign for the gap,
>following in the footsteps of such cultural icons as ll cool j and uh,
>david arquette (note to research dept: was rollins ever in one of
>these? we'd better make sure, no sense in getting on his bad side).
>since there's more to chan than just having her photo taken, she
>recently recorded sessions for the bbc's john peel and xfm's john
>kennedy, played a bunch of uk festival dates, and continued work on her
>long-awaited new album.

if you're in la, go see her.  mike and i will drool with jealousy.
friday  10/19 los angeles, ca @ all tomorrow's parties
see http://www.matadorrecords.com/cat_power if you wanna.

mmmkay?

subject:      mp3: come down in time

hi all!

since i got so many requests for the father and son mp3, i decided to
offer more mp3s from the early recordings bootleg cds to everyone who
doesn't have the cds.

i'll try to offer a new mp3 each week.
this week it's come down in time.

at this point i don't have my own server, so i can't just put the
file on the web for you to download.
just drop me an e-mail and i'll send it to you.

the file is almost 4 mb in size, so you might want to make sure that
your mailbox can handle mails this big. if your mailbox won't allow
you to receive mails of this size, i'll gladly try and send it to you
via icq or aim. just let me know.

have a great weekend!

:)
take care,
kathrin

subject:      european listees: three early rec cds giveaway...

hi everyone!

i have spare copies of the three early recodings cds and will send
them to whoever mails me about it first.

i'd like to offer these to the european listees first because we tend
to be somewhat bootleg cd deprived here;).

if no european listee wants them i'll post again and ask the whole
list.

take care,
kathrin*
