as someone who recently posted on political issues about our current =
nation's emergency, i would like to publicly apologize for that. i was =
gently reminded by jen the owner on the admin note she posted that this =
list is for and about the indigo girls. that other newsgroups have been =
created for us by other people to voice our opinions. so i don't think i =
am doing anything out of context if i discuss what i am doing in =
relation to the music. indigo girls music. i would find it interesting =
and maybe others on the list feel the same way about what songs by the =
girls have you been listening to that have helped you during this time? =
again, i am not looking or trying to promote any political opinions here =
that would be offensive, just curious about what music have you been =

i have really been listening to hammer and a nail and peace tonight. i =
am looking for songs to lift my spirit and center me. i really find =

too right - very dangerous, and irrelevant at this time.
as a non-american, can i offer my deepest sympathy to all those people
bereaved or still not knowing if their loved ones are safe - we in the uk
are stunned and appalled by this pointless tragedy, too.
there is no one enemy here, either; no one country to wage war against. most
afghanistans might not even know this tragedy occurred, most of them don't
have enough food, let alone tv, phones, radio, etc. attacking them would be
worse than pointless.  i understand how americans must feel and i don't know
how to solve the problem, but most muslims are just as anxious for peace in
the world as anyone else. i hope - indeed there must be justice, but,
please, not war.

"avalon" -- michelle malone.

this week has been super trying for me because besides the terrorism, my
boyfriend (who i met through ig (board and shows) ) fell really ill.  (in
fact he was supposed to fly out to visit me last tuesday, but for two obvious
reasons, it didn't happen).  anyway, his favorite ig song is "virginia woolf"
and that has been really comfoting to me during this past week...

hello y'all!

normally i am a lurker, but i had to post today for this thread....

finlandia!

i went to church today for the first time in a long time, and we sang this song
(what a great day to decide to go back).  it was incredibly moving, and not
just because it was an ig moment.  many people commented after the service that
the words were very fitting for the events of the last week, and when deciding
what our course of action should be.

i posted the lyrics below, if anyone would like a refresher (taken from
lifeblood):

this is my song
oh god of all the nations
a song of peace
for lands afar and mine

this is my home
the country where my heart is
here are my hopes
my dreams my holy shrine

but other hearts
in other lands are beating
with hopes and dreams
as true and high as mine

my countries skies
are bluer than the ocean
and sunlight beams
on clover leaf and pine

but other lands
have sunlight too and clover
and skies are everywhere
as blue as mine

oh hear my song
oh god of all the nations
a song of peace
for their land and for mine

just to clarify:

1) i never said i disagreed with something someboday said
2) i am not trying to impose on anyone's freedom of speech
3) i simply was pointing out that off-topic arguing was perchance not
the most productive thing to do at this time and not really what

i apologize that plea was interpreted as something other than what i
intended it to be, that being a simple plea for a little less conflict.

before the gods, i light three candles.

i light a red candle, for fury.
let my rage be focused where it may do the most good for me and mine, and
the most damage to our enemies.
may the red of their blood run across the ground.
may the lord of the hunt chase them down and devour them.

i light a blue candle, for peace.
may the innocent victims of hatred be comforted, and may the friends of me
and mine be protected.
may they find peace in the arms of the lady.

i light a white candle, for wisdom.
let my rage, and my comfort, be directed to the deserving.
to those who deserve cruelty, let the red flame burn hot and fierce. to
those who deserve mercy, let the light of the lady wash away their pain.

in the light of the white flame, i ask not that the gods take my side; i ask
that they guide me to theirs.

so mote it be.

uggh, there was no way i could make it to tonights or tomorrow nights shows
- (tonight is pretty stellar, i'd have paid to sit outside listening in
tonight if i lived in boston.

however - since it is sold out (and i think every passim's show is webcast)
go to www.radioboston.com to listen - it should be webcast.

donate time, money, a shoulder to cry on - and remember the victims

hi.

much as i hate unnecessary nigc postings - as the anti-falwell piece was
posted to the list last week, it is only right that it should be noted that
he has retracted the statements he made.
i leave it to you, the loyal indigo girls list reader, to interperet the

hi all,

i hope everyone is doing ok.

i still have extra tickets to the ballet on saturday, october 20, 2pm.  we
have a group going and i have reserved tickets.  they are right in the
center on the main floor and 18-20 rows back, which i understand to be very
good seats for the ballet, since they tend to move around on the stage alot,
you won't have to look back and forth so much.

aside from the people that have allready reserved seats.  let me know if you
are interested in going.  i need to receive money for your ticket by
september 28.  i have to pay for them all at once on a credit card.  the
tickets are a discounted price of $51.00 a piece.

thanks

so i guess us gays & lesbians are still to blame? actually, this is
misleading. he did "apologize" to all the groups he maligned but why are
news agencies so conveniently leaving out the gay & lesbian part? even
cnn.com added us into the apology.

but as far as i am concerned, he can shove his apology. there is no heart
behind it. he is just trying to save face. after all, this isn't the first
time he's had to retract what he said. just do a search for "falwell
apologizes"

hey, if  anyone is going to the 2 pm atlanta ballet so they can see michelle
malone that night (october 20th) at eddie's attic  - i'm opening for
michelle, at 9 pm, before her second set.

i'm doing my first ever midwestern shows this coming week - pittsburgh
tomorrow (ok, maybe that's not midwest), and on into ohio, illinois
(chicago - saturday night), wisconsin, and minnesota. if anybody wants a
nice night of music, for a good cause (we're  encouraging people to bring
toiletries and other neccessity items, which are being donated to local
women's shelters). it's all part of the first edition of a tour called "will
folk for food" (http://wfff.20m.com)

lastly, has everyone seen the list of songs that clear channel (the world's
largest radio network) is encouraging its djs not to play? it includes 150
songs, including "get together" by the youngbloods (which the indigo girls
have covered),  "imagine" by john lennon, "na na na na hey hey" by steam,
and the entire body of works of rage against the machine. some of the
songs - metallica, mudvayne, megadeth, etc - are violent, but i don't see
the point of banning "the boy from new york city" - can we not mention the
city anymore? or "bridge over troubled water" - surely songs like that one
and imagine would be a comfort, rather than an upset...it doesn't bode well,
in any case.

actually, this is not a hoax.  yesterday a disc jockey on wmmr here in
philadelphia (a classic rock station) was talking about how some stations
have banned the songs you listed, although his station had not.  it's so
unfortunate (for lack of a better word) that during this time of war and
anger and hatred, a song such as "imagine" should be pulled off the air.
it's almost as if some people don't want us to calm down and continue to

it is not a hoax in that clear channel did make a list of songs.....those
songs aren't banned however....they are simply suggestions of what might be

they're just encouraged not to play these songs coming out of news
segments -- good thing, too, because if you're into any pop/rock/alt-rock,
there are some crucial playlist songs on there.  in fact, i'm proud to own
the majority of those songs, with the large exception of neil diamond...
the funniest?  "walk like an egyptian"

also, anything with the word tuesday is banned.  the stones' "ruby
tuesday" has nothing to do with anything other than the title.

could it be a conspiracy?  note songs that decry violence like "sunday
bloody sunday" are on the list, but nobody's banning the cure's "killing
an arab."  :)

i think "imagine" is the most appropriate song they could be playing right
now. i'm so tired of everyone's religion being the only "correct" one. if
there were "no religion" maybe we'd have no violence right now. i'm very
scared about a possible violent retaliation by the usa or even a war. i
can't stand that another innocent life may be lost anywhere in the world. i
don't consider myself a christian at all but right now i can't help but
think "what would jesus do?"
sorry for the nigc i just had to reply,
lynne

according to the new york times, and also npr, this is not a hoax.  the article can be found here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2001/09/19/arts/music/19popl.html
the article does state the following:
"a clear channel spokeswoman emphasized that the list was not a mandate or order to radio programmers. in a statement, the company said the list came not from the corporate offices but from "a grass-roots effort that was apparently circulated among program directors."

i was at the panel discussion and some of the topics that were covered were
most interesting. it is definitely worth your time to muddle through and
watch. but don't just skip ahead and watch the parts where amy speaks or you
are going to miss the pointedness of some of her statements...

in truth, there may not be much that you can do, but you must do at least
that much.....

well, at least i've heard a couple of these songs on the radio since the
attack. what could possibly be wrong with "what a wonderful world?" that
song is so beautiful and just lifts me up every time i hear it.

i think we should start swamping stations with requests for these songs.

hi folks,

please keep the following in mind when posting to the list

*  use plain text only.  this will allow all listees equal opportunity (and
less aggravation) to view your message.

*  keep quotes to a minimum.  please take the time to delete anything that
is not directly related to your reply.

*  do not send attachments to the list.  again, many listees have difficulty
reading attachments.

*  keep nigc posting to a reasonable quantity and size.  granted there is a
great deal going on in the world right now, but please take lengthy nigc
conversations off list.

thanks in advance!

hey y'all,

i don't like to post nigc stuff on here but i thought this was a good cause.
i live out in hawaii and we've been hearing criticism from some of the
mainland visitors that, "hawaii residents are too distant unsympathetic to
the tragedy unfolding on the east coast."  in answer to this a group of maui
residents have banded together to raise $100,000 for the victims of these
attacks.  several businesses have started a fund raising campaign tied to
sales of "united we stand" t-shirts.  i have volunteered to help in this
fund raiser.  these shirts will be sold for $10 with proceeds going to the
american red cross diaster relief fund.  most of these shirts will, no
doubt, be sold right here in hawaii, but i am willing to front the money and
purchase shirts for those who are interested.  unfortunately, i cannot eat
the cost of shipping and must ask that those interested also send an
additional $4 us to cover the cost of priority mail for a total of $14.00 us
per shirt.  all i ask for right now is a count of how many people are
interested...send no money at this time.  i have a scan of the newspaper
article with the shirt design included for those who want to see what they
will look like...the design will be printed in full color...email me for
access to site i have stored the article on.

peace,
karen

too distant unsympathetic? that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and
people who say that should be ashamed. afterall, hawaii was not even a state
yet when it was attackeed at what became the beginning of wwii yet every
single american felt it, thousands of miles away. if anything, i would think
hawaii would have special insight into what it is like being attacked.

now on to the fundraiser thing. i hope you have checked that this is totally
legit because there are sooooo many scams going on right now "in the name of
the victims." and to the part which should be sent privately but my brain is
scrambled after being up for 36 hours (oh the joys of ptsd insomnia) so you
just get one email, i would be interested if you can take a credit card thru
paypal. k-mart is doing something similar with selling t-shirts to benefit
rc and i bought 3 from them but folks, we need to keep giving til it hurts.

joe,

maybe i'm strange, but i disagree. it's always a wonderful world. the sun
still rises, the birds still sing, the leaves turn colors. there are bad and
horrible thiings, but overall i say without reservation "what a wonderful
world!"
