this is what emily played at the oakhurst recovery benefit tonight at the
first existential church, in candler park:

philosophy of loss
deconstruction of love (which, according to her, still hasn't been named)
she's saving me
finlandia

this time she was accompanied by clare kenney (on bass), carol isaacs (on
keyboard, and accordian), and brady blade (on drums).   i was mistakenly
informed that it was blair spotted at centennial park yesterday, when in
fact, it was brady.  this is the band recording with the girls on their new
cd.

they sounded great - even better than yesterday, although it was an
altogether different setting.    emily's voice sounded even stronger and
clearer in the small church setting.

btw - here is a link to a picture from the "atlanta unites" event yesterday

=)

ps- to everyone i owe a long letter to - it's coming!  i promise!!!  =)

i am not sure if any of you know about this but there
is this great website called audiogallaxy.com  but i
have had a long day at school and can't remember if
galaxy is spelled with one or two l's.  anyway, this
is a website sort of like napster but even better.
once you have downloaded songs it saves directly to
your hard drive.  there are thousands (i think) or
around that of indigo girls songs.  it is a pretty
fabulous site so check it out and you may find what
you are looking for there.

happy hunting,

hey there, folksters -

so it's me again, trolling for a copy of the recent wolftrap show. i was there,
it was awesome, i promised the friend who accompanied that i'd try my hardest
to scare up a copy of it for her. so yeah. is there anybody here who can hook
me up? email me offlist - i'm happy to arrange a trade or to send a blank.

as for the otherwise, it's none other than a stab at promotion for a house
concert. that's right, folks, the opportunity to support independent music (as
per the ideals of the indigo girls) is right on top of you.

kevin so (who was one of falcon ridge's best beloveds of the past year and has
been nominated for a fistful of boston music awards) is playing in our living
room in west philly on friday, october 26th. it's going to be an amazing show,
with an audience of 30 people maximum, so email me if you want details. even if
you have no idea what a house concert is, email me - i'm pretty sure i can sell
you on the concept.

check it out here:   http://www.southpawconcerts.com
and while you're at it, go here too:   http://www.sixthst.com

it's more good music than you can shake a stick at.

jennifer kimball is coming to play an intimate acoustic concert thursday
18th october ay our house, just west o'philadelphia. now this is something
special. jenn is a wonderful singer/multi-instrumentalist who used to be in
the story with jonatha brooke. if you ask me she's the better half of the
duo (they even played with the igs, so there's your igc right there). agree,
or don't believe me? come see, hear and meet her for yourself.
details and tickets here: http://concerts.sixthst.com

if you're feeling extra daring you can come see the highly recommended ben
demerath on saturday 3 november at the same venue, or kevin so on friday
oct. 26th at another philly listee's place - mandy is a-hosting the southpaw
series o'concerts (www.southpawconcerts.com) and you really should check
that out right now too.

so hey, i've been waiting for an indigo girls-ish topic to jump on and
include this plug at the end, but nothing's been happening. so i figured if
the dude who occasionally posts the jerry's birthday bash thing (and nothing
else) can get away with blatant advertising on the list, then so can an
upstanding member of the ig community such as, er, myself. yeah :)

take care kids

from now on, when jodie foster refers to her
two golden guys, we can no longer assume she means
her pair of oscars.

that's because the 38-year-old actress-director
-producer gave birth saturday to son number two,
publicist pat kingsley confirmed today.

here are the vital statistics. the baby's name is
kit foster. like big brother charles, kit was born
in los angeles. he weighed in at 6 pounds, 3 ounces.

while the delivery came about a month earlier
than foster had planned, "there is no reason
to raise any red flags--everything was normal,"
kingsley says. "both [foster and child] are at
home and fine."

as with charles, who turned three in july,
mom is mum on the paternity of the newborn.
when asked in april by new york post gossip
columnist liz smith whether "her donor" was the
same man as charles' father, the fiercely private
foster replied, "i'm not going to answer that."

that echoed foster's hard-line no-comment
stance when she announced she was pregnant with
charlie in 1998. "i'm not going to discuss the
father, the method or anything of that nature,"
she told smith at the time. since then, while
tabloids and gossip columns have speculated on
likely father candidates, foster has stuck to her promise.

she says she plans to raise her kids as single
mother. "just like i was raised myself," she told
smith.

before taking a break to handle her impending
mommyhood, foster, who picked up best actress
oscars for 1988's the accused and 1991's the
silence of the lambs, wrapped the columbia
pictures' thriller the panic room. she also
produced and starred in the indie flick the
dangerous lives of altar boys. both films are
slated to be released next year.

hi all,

the glbt organization here at the u of montana has just found out that the
"reverend" fred phelps (the "god hates fags" guy) and his entourage are
planning on gracing our campus with their presence on oct. 15. this is as
part of their "god hates america" campaign in which, i am  told, they are
following in the tradition of falwell and blaming us queers for the
current problems in our country.

what i/we are looking for is any advice to be given by any of you who
have dealt with him before, in any capacity at all. we've already planned
a silent vigil/protest, etc. but, any help is much appreciated.

thanks,
amy m.

we here in lawrence, ks (just 20 miles from the home
of the phelps clan) have found counter-pledges the
most effective way.  you can't reason with these
people, attempting to talk to them is pointless.  we
instead organize people to pledge x amount of money
for each phelps protester present and donate the money
to a queer-friendly organization.  these tactics have
infuriated phelps in the past, but do diminish his
numbers and, most importantly, prevent future
appearances.

i'll try to round up some articles to send you
off-list too about past counter-pledges.

peace,
:-)carrie

well, in tulsa ok a few years back phelps and his cohorts decided they would
crash out gay pride parade and picnic. i guess it was on tuesday before that
they sent out new letters and such to all local new media to let them know
that he and his followers would be there to protest  and to show the right
etc...we....there was about 13 of them, stuck behind the barracades in the
heat and humidity of tulsa...while several thousand of us laughed, played in
sprinkles, watched entertainers and had a grand old time. even tho they
tried to prove themselves so big and mighty and better than"us", they
failed. i had to laugh listening to some of my more christian straight
friends saying things like....well...heck...the only thing he succeeded in
was having half of his folks taken to the hospital due to dehydration!!!!

michael moore succeed in getting him to leave when i think he had a big gay

(before i start, just delete this if you don't give a rat's ass about
phelps.  this is long.  but you love me.)

hi amy hi amy hi amy!
this is kinda long but i wanted you all to read it because this is immensely
useful for all who want a great and effective (!) way to combat this guy and
others of his ilk, and at minimum emotional trauma.  below is a description
of our event, a link to a web story, and a copy of our press release.  have
fun!  if you have any further questions, gimme an email.  (amy, you're
always welcome to e-me, no matter why)

jill

now then.
last year, when the actually-quite-decrepit-and-wrinkled mr phelps decided
to pay my dear oberlin a visit (because our athletic director, mike muska,
is the first openly gay one in the country, and because we're all
treehugging lesbian liberals, or so the 'rev' says), i was part of the
committee that planned a counterprotest of sorts in just six days.  they say
god hates fags, but the good lord sure was with us that day as phelps was
basically ignored by hundreds and hundreds of gay, straight, pagan,
christian, etc students, professors, faculty, staff, and local residents who
were "celebrating diversity" twenty yards away with a celebration in the
town square.

in this immensely successful show of unity between the queer and religious
communities on our campus, the grills were toted out and a picnic was held,
local musicians performed, queer kiss-ins were held on the street, pastors
from just about every church in oberlin were there, and the president of our
college was leisurely strolling the grounds, among reams of rainbow
streamers billowing in the breeze.  rainbow ribbons were worn by queer and
straight alike-- it was almost an unspoken agreement that if phelps was
coming to attack our queers, he was coming to attack all of us.  we were all
big and gay that day, and we had the best time.

and no one looked worse than phelps and his entourage of
polyester-suitjacket-wearing biblemen sporting some serious comb-overs,
their lycra-clad-housewives-with-bad-perms and their kids-with-mullets.
because, fashion faux pas aside, these supposedly religious people were
standing sternly on the streetcorners, unsmiling, with placards telling of
god's hate; meanwhile, the hundreds (thousands?) of us 'sinners' were
dancing, picnicking, making music, loving, kissing, praying, having rituals
for peace, and revelling in the gorgeous day.

remember that song that goes "this is the day that the lord has made/ we
will rejoice and be glad in it"?  clearly the reverend didn't.

--------------------------------------------------
he called oberlin "a vile stinky leper colony."
oberlin college, its students, faculty, staff, and administrators seemed to
think otherwise.
read our story at http://www.oberlin.edu/~thegrape/phelps.html

--------------------------------------------------
and this is the press release we sent out.  you are totally welcome to
create a copycat protest/day-o-fun.

for immediate release

fun not phelps      tuesday may 9, 2000, 11am-4pm     tappan square

the oberlin community will come together in celebration of the queer and
faith communities on tuesday may 9, 2000 from 11am to 4pm.  many eyes will
be on oberlin's response to fred phelps' not-so-friendly visit to oberlin.

phelps says that "god hates fags."  that matthew shepard, who was brutally
murdered because he is gay, is currently burning in hell. that "aids cures
fags."  he offers a warning that "the zeitgeist of oberlin is sending
students to hell".  phelps is coming to oberlin with videocameras and
handcuffs in his pockets, eagerly awaiting opportunity to goad us into
breaking laws (i.e. violating his civil liberties-- making someone angry
enough to take a swing at him) so he can make citizens arrests or sue.

the oberlin community's engagement in phelps' message of hate is the
metaphorical laugh of the medusa--our community response is working within
our community, and not with phelps.  of course, phelps' messages are
incredibly upsetting and really hit an emotional chord.  there will be
counselors in wilder hall (the student union) throughout the entire
afternoon.  some folks will choose to ignore phelps, pray, dance, talk to
people, etc.  there are lots of chances to have fun--bands, acapella groups,
and choirs performing all afternoon; a free picnic open to students and
nonstudents alike; queer 'baptisms'; human chess (as in, with human
chesspieces!); hopscotch; and a whole bunch of homosocial and ally fun.

we will have our own fun, be out as queers, be out as allies, be out as
christians and other folks of faith.  we can get a kick out of our
incredibly diverse community that is under attack from fundamentalists and
"normal" people.  tuesday afternoon it's all about us.

fred phelps is helping us throw a party.  come be part of the fun!!!

fun not phelps     tuesday may 9, 2000, 11am-4pm      tappan square

hi everyone!

this week's mp3 is don't give up on me baby. an emily song comparable

the sweetest, sweetest, sweetest love
i've ever found...".
:)

don't give up on me - lyrics

don't
don't give up on me baby
though we've seen shaky times
there's still solid ground to be found
i said don't
don't give up on me baby
though i may seem strong
it's only because
cause you're around

you know me better than i do
you know how things go to my head
i said a few things to you
things that were better left unsaid
but don't
don't give up on me baby
cause you know i love you
and i always
i always will

now love
love's a sweet kind of pain
it can give you wings to fly
then it drags you on down
but darling
i'll never love this way again, no
you're the sweetest, sweetest, sweetest love
i've ever found

you know me better than i do
you know how things go to my head
i said a few things to you
things that were better left unsaid
but don't
don't give up on me baby, no
cause i love you
and i always
always will

i'm looking for "tame yourself" by raw youth and "damned old dog" by kd
lang.  wondering if you could throw it into your media share file and
log on to the good ol' morpheus sometime and let me download it. i've
been trying to get it for like 6 weeks now, but no dice. please let me
know if you'd be willing to share.  thanks.  sorry for the nigc.  oh,
i'm glad to offer you anything from my ig digital boot collection in
return.

hey all,

i've just come up with the idea of putting together a two-hour show of
queer and queer-friendly artists to celebrate coming out day.  the thing is
my broadcast is in just a few hours, and i have a million and one things to
do, and i'm just not thinking straight (so to speak).  so i need reminders
of queer and queer-friendly artists.  my audience is fairly mainstream.
so, i tend to play mainstream sounding stuff with a bit of alternative
stuff thrown in to try and broaden peoples' tastes a bit.

so if you have any suggestions, even ones that are really obvious, please
send them to me privately.  of course ig is at the top of my list.  my
address is:
atink@uq.net.au

thanks heaps, and sorry for the nigc.
take care all,
amanda.
