thousands to converge in columbus ga - nov. 17 & 18 - to protest u.s. army
training of latin american terrorists washington - november 8 - on saturday
and sunday, november 17 & 18, thousands of u.s. citizens will gather in
columbus, georgia. they will commemorate all victims of terrorism and
demand the closing of the soa. soa graduates continue to be implicated in
acts of terrorism -- civilian-targeted killings -- in colombia and
elsewhere in latin america.
the october 30 london guardian stated, "until january this year whisc
[western hemisphere institute for security cooperation] was called the
'school of the americas,' or soa. since 1946, soa has trained more than
60,000 latin american soldiers and policemen. among its graduates are many
of the continent's most notorious torturers, mass murderers, dictators and
state terrorists."
on sunday morning, hundreds of demonstrators will take part in the annual
solemn procession to ft. benning and the soa/whisc. over 20 soa watch
supporters are now serving six-month sentences in federal prison --
including nuns, students, teachers, veterans and a senior nasa scientist --
for their (nonviolent) role in last november's procession. they are among
the 70 soa watch prisoners of conscience who over the last decade have
served sentences totaling 40 years.
the weekend program will include an array of live music and speakers from
latin and north america: hilcia guadalupe, joventud unita de vieques;

mcalister, jonah house; jack nelson-pallmeyer, author of school of the
assassins; and kathy kelly, founder voices in the wilderness, nobel peace
prize nominee.
soa watch, founded in 1990, is a national, grassroots, faith- and
conscience-based group committed to nonviolence. we have offices in
columbus, ga, washington, dc and chapters in communities and on campuses
around the country. our goal is to expose and close soa/whisc.

subject: atlanta ballet t-shirts
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hey folks
i don't know if there's anybody out there still wanting, but the atlanta ballet
is printing a second round of shed your skin t-shirts, taking orders (online
and otherwise) through november 15th. all shirts are long-sleeve and $30. the
webpage says they're shipping all orders on the 17th, which strikes me as
ambitious, but one thing this trip taught me is that the ballet folks certianly
have their act together, so they may well manage it.
the design for the t-shirts is the same as the $15 posters, with the two
dancers (as opposed to the dippy little $5 ones with the ig close-up shot from
the main webpage and the dancer leaping over their heads - yes, thank you, i
own one) and you can see it on the ordering page:
<http://atlantaballet.com/tshirt.htm>
anybody without browser access or who'd rather not trade online can call in
their order at 404-873-5811 x202.

yeah that's right, i received a suspicious email.
it was sent from victormohmoh@yahoo.net.
it wasn't addressed to me directly, it just said <<from;
victormohmoh@yahoo.net, to:victormohmoh@yahoo,net.>>
the man claims he is the son of sonny abacha later head of nigeria,
says his family is having a lot of trouble, and he's trying to raise
money to send them over.
what especially gets me is he doesn't want his letter exposed....it
seems that if he's trying to raise money he would want as much exposure
as possible.
i'm not going to send any money, but why would the person who sent this
email not want to address me directly, and how can i trace this <<victor
mohmoh>> and do a background check?
very concerned.
barb
ps i have a yahoo account.

<<while i've been a travelling fan since the early 90s, i didn't spend the

sound is great.
bonus tracks are good, if few in number.
artwork leaves a lot to be desired.
now you can get them through the "buy 1 get 11 free" cd clubs like cdhq or
bmgmusicservice i would get them that way (and maybe spend the cash you
saved on cds by some other cool artists like, umm... beth amsel, or jennifer
kimball, or whoever...) i'd be happy to introduce you personally to either
of these evil-but-necessary services :)

today in the mail i got the latest issue of performing songwriter, november 2001 with billy joel on the cover. one of the main themes of the issue is the healing power of music. this includes a piece with writings from a number of musicians with their thoughts about the sept 11 tragedy. amy ray has a fairly long bit in this, and other artists include mary chapin carpenter, patty larkin, tori amos, david wilcox and more.
there's also a column by janis ian with a diary of thoughts as things happened in sept (she was in ca at the time) and another from julie gold whose apartment had included a view of the wtc towers. it's an intense issue and, imo, well worth reading.
since i just got mine in the mail, it should be on newsstands probably by early next week. it can also be ordered over the web at www.performingsongwriter.com <http://www.performingsongwriter.com/>

i must have downloaded this song from napster, morpheus, limewire, et
al, and i'm wondering if anyone knows what its from and who else sings
on it. i half recognize some voices.
anyone know or have guesses as to what andy is about? if you all
discussed this at length when the album was released, please ignore
the question--i wasn't a member then. lifeblood doesn't list any
background, other than that its amy's fav of emily's songs on the
album. just curious.
and--didn't we have a little contest going? songs ig covered before
the writer recorded them, or something. was that lost after 9/11? i
don't remember hearing the answer, and it would be fun if the list got
going a bit again. of course, if it was answered, ignore this
question too.
thanks
hope all is well in your worlds...
amanda
ps--if anyone wants the song, i can email it to you if your email can
handle it.

i think it's a fictional story of a farm boy. kind of princess bride without
the princess.

great line.
andy, in my opinion, is not one of her best. i'm
being kind - never liked it, probably never will. it
just strikes me as unlistenable and insipid - - -
doesn't mean it is though. it's different things to
different people.

i sort of go back and forth with andy. it's nowhere near a favorite of mine,
but then i don't think that anything emily wrote for the last album measures up
to her past work. it really is much better live and acoustic, gentler and much
more affecting.
i actually think that andy, as far as songcraft goes, is kind of like ghost -
far less successful, mind, but the respective projects of the two songs are
similar. that is, each song narrates a failed love story, non-autobiographical
but written in autobiographical style, that operates in a series of extended
metaphors. and in both songs, i think, emily piles on way more instumentation
than is necessary. (which, if you ask me, works in ghost, more or less, but is
hideously cloying in andy.) i also think that, for all the specific rural-y
details in andy, emily is shooting for the universality-through-specificity
that works so well in so many of her songs, except that it kind of falls flat.
but, you know, she meant well.
oh well. at least the new album promises better... all of emily's new songs (at
least all the ones she played at wolftrap) seem realy wonderful. is it too
early yet to begin trading wild, unfounded speculations as to what the new
album's going to be called?

p.s. philly folks, we have another house concert coming up - chris and meredith
