i drink a ton of diet mountain dew, and right now they are having this lil
thing where the caps have a code on them, and you can go to dewstuff.com and
enter the code, and perhaps be an instant winner.  if you are not an instant
winner, you score points.  the points build up, and they offer digital
prizes, which are usually song downloads or cheesy screensavers, that you can
'buy' with your points.  so far, i've not spent any of my 6,000 points.  but
anyway, i was entering my code tonight, and it offered me "closer to fine",
for 275 points!  it also had a link where you could buy more from the indigo
girls.  i thought that was pretty sweet lil advertisement, and thought i'd
share :-)
have a good night!

hey y'all.  i got this from another list.  it is a review of jewel's new cd.
anyway, the reason i forwarded it along to this list is that it has a small
mention of ig in it.

this was in today's daytona beach news-journal.... this way got a pretty
good review.

*********************************************

jewel, "this way" atlantic records 4 out of 5 stars

while most lilith fair gals performed in birkenstocks or boots, jewel went
against the earth-mama and folk-chick vibes of that all-woman tour and
played her dates in snappy high heels.

while many rock artists fear any activity that may smell of pretension,
jewel had the audacity to publish a book of her poems. and we all know a
rock star who dares lay claim to the "p" word, who dares to practice the
same art as shakespeare and yeats, risks being pilloried and ostracized as
an ego-drenched poseur.

and on her new album, "this way," jewel wheels out this spiffy lyric: "who
says a woman cannot serve? it would be my pleasure. who says it is not my
destiny to let you control me?"

before you feminists scramble for a noose and the nearest tree limb,
consider jewel's high heels, her poems and, most importantly, her savvy new
album of rootsy yet refreshing rock. the conclusion: jewel may not be a
robotic slave to trends, hipness, political correctness (feminist division)
or expectations, but she really isn't a rebel, either. "this way" is not
iconoclastic.

rather, jewel just unabashedly meanders down whatever by-way her muse, or
life, happens to lead her.

at times, she gushes sweet lovey-dovey nothings, as if she were a giddy
school girl who's imitating elizabeth barrett browning (she of "how do i
love thee? let me count the ways" fame).

on her song "love me, just leave me alone," jewel pulls a bonnie raitt and
gets bluesy over growling guitars. on "i won't walk away," she sounds like a
broken jazz diva cooing a tragic torch song in some smoke-choked dive.

at times, jewel gives in to her inner poet and tosses out such lines as "the
lambs in the ghettos who worship their gepettos." like the fruity but
delightfully surprising poetics of the indigo girls, jewel knows just how
much leash to allow her poetry muse.

while some of jewel's rootsy, folky songs are spiked by clever touches of
electronic loops and urban beats, other tunes could pass for shania twain's
brand of country.

and those lines about serving and submission? perhaps jewel is addressing a
guy, or perhaps she's talking about submitting to her true inner self. after
all, the song's title is "serve the ego," and the opening lyric is "mirror,
mirror, do you like what you see?"

you know how these artsy types can be, especially an electro-folkie, high
heel-clad hippie rocker with a poet's soul.

sorry for the nigc
(i could probably, slightly, make igc out of anything, but i digress)
elton did a show for an opening a major performing arts center last night
in philly nad it was fully broadcast locally on tv.

did anyone tape it? or already encode it to mp3???

have stuff to trade (and hopefully, i will mail stuff out. soonish. i work
right near one of those mail places, so no excuses anymore.)

if i owe you stuff, email me
(happy because i splurged and got face to face elton/billy joel tixs this
am. your song has been in my head for the past week, i blame the concert
for nyc mp3s...)
peer 2 peer ig stuff up soon. really.

howdy ya'll,

bein' kinda new to the girls yet, i don't know if this is a common thing or
not, so ignore this email if it is.

but i was watching the green bay packers vs. tennessee titans game
today-being from wisconsin, it's mandatory you watch the packers...-and after
they lost pathetically, i hear blaring out of the stadium speakers as the
players leave the field, none other than "nashville"!  as the commentators
yammered on i got to hear most of the song quite clearly until the cameras
cut away from the field.

dig, i know that's where the stadium is, but did whoever played that song
even listen to the lyrics before popping it into the old cd player?  it's not
exactly singing the praises of the town, but nevertheless!  i was absolutely
thrilled, and i just wanted to share that with ya'll!  i had no idea!  peace
and love.

i know there is sometimes talk of songs that you'd like to see the girls
cover.........  well, on friday night, here in atlanta, at the echo lounge,
they made a special appearance with a local group (group sex), and did a few
surprising covers with the band (who specialize in fun 80's songs).......

amy sang joan jett's song "i hate myself for loving you"
emily & amy both sang wild cherry's "play that funky music" (while emily did
this
funky dance - words can't even begin to describe it)
and amy sang quiet riot's "come on feel the noize"

amy also sang a song with the opening act, gerard mchugh & the crafties, off
of gerard's new cd "tales of madness & horror" (available from daemon).  both
amy & emily contribute vocals to the new cd.

the show was already so much fun, and they just made it even more exciting.
amy, as always, continues to surprise me with her range of songs.  she can
make anything sound good, apparently - even quiet riot!   and, who knew emily
could do that funky dance.........  it was all a lot of fun!

=)

oh my god. hilarious. i was just thinking about that song "play that funky
music" the other day. i'd absolutely love to see amy and emily sing that
one! (and emily's dance...lisa, you were at the right place at the right
time!). ha. wow. did anyone boot this show?! drop me a line!

while i'm at it...does anyone have boots of the summer seattle pier shows
from 2000 or 2001? i'm looking for any and/or all of them! (it's a birthday
present...for myself...given it's my 21st today, well, i guess
yesterday--the 16th--i thought i'd try and treat myself and try to find a
recording of those wonderful shows...). let me know!!!!

thanks.
happy day!

i would seriously doubt the validity of this
item.  this auction is from the same individual
who's been selling self-manufactured, very
available bootlegs for unbelievably inflated
prices for years.  even if it did happen to be
real, i'd urge all of you to not do business with
this individual, it just propogates her whole
cycle of making money off the indigo girls.

i agree with tara.  after further looking i saw who was selling it.  i would
never buy from this person.  even if it looks interesting.

i would seriously doubt the validity of this
item.  this auction is from the same individual
who's been selling self-manufactured, very
available bootlegs for unbelievably inflated
prices for years.  even if it did happen to be
real, i'd urge all of you to not do business with
this individual, it just propogates her whole
cycle of making money off the indigo girls.

well, i know people who would have known what promo
stuff exists from various places. i *have* never heard
of a hammer promo, or a bunch of other stuff that the
woman is selling - a pen for $100, c'mon folks, that
is nuts.

i mean, i don't feel comfortable selling photos that
are matted of a+e (tho i do have some nice lighthouse
photos...)

i mean there are collectable stuff out there, but this
person is really sketchy.

(i have the emails to prove it)

the black and white camo pants and the black izod shirt (complete with the

definitely don't spend that kind of money. but there was, once, an indigo girls pen.  a friend of mine who was a dj in the late 80s/early 90s received a couple from ig because she helped them get airplay up here.  it's just a basic pen, white body with a blue cap and "indigo girls" stamped on the side.

fyi and for your narrow mind: 'conviction' doesn't mean anything, especially
not truth, when you're poor and black in america.  (not that that would
occur to a white, upper-middle-class, college-educated male.)

i will gladly delete you,

yay jill!  i know the trial was a fiasco, in terms of
truths - but i don't know what the specific
"inconsistencies" are - can anyone provide specific
references or point me to a url that can answer this
for me?

text below:

december 18, 2001

greetings:

it has been a while since i have penned an update to the fan club on
indigo girls upcoming events. last time i did it, i mailed the notes to
everyone -- that dates it. over the last few years we have worked with
artist direct which has maintained our website and store. artist direct
is evolving into a record label so we have established a new site, with a
new server that is 100% indigo girls owned and operated. you can be
assured that all information on the site will be accurate and timely
because the source will be amy and emily and russell carter artist
management.

speaking personally, a chapter ends and a new chapter begins. amy and
emily have sung together for twenty-one years. they have recorded
professionally for epic for over a dozen years. after many gold and
platinum records, a set of re-mastered and reissued early albums and a
retrospective it is time to look ahead and turn our attention to the
coming year. believe me, it is going to be exciting, productive,
fulfilling and successful!

the new studio album is set for release the last week of february. it is
twelve new songs, all acoustic, recorded with the current band (clare
kenny, carol isaacs and brady blade). you may have heard some of the
songs on the summer tour in the earliest stages of their development -
"you've got to show", "deconstruction", "she's saving me", "nuevos
senoritas", "starkville" and "yield." others were developed in the
studio: "hope alone", "collecting you", "moment of forgiveness", "trust",
"bitterroot" and "become you". the title of the new album is "become
you".

i have said it about past records and i will say it again: this is the
best album amy and emily have recorded. it is produced by peter collins,
engineered by glenn matullo, mixed by bob clearmountain and mastered by
bob ludwig. it sounds incredible. i think their voices in particular are
recorded better than ever.

starting in january, we will take the first single to radio starting at
the triple a (adult alternative) format. i will post a list of all of the
aaa stations in each market and you can harass your local d.j. if he or
she is not playing the song. from adult alternative, we go to modern
adult and adult contemporary formats. again, if you are interested i will
let you know what stations we are chasing after.

we have a five-track bonus cd that will be given away with the cd in a
limited quantity when it is first released. it may be available at
certain stores only. we are also looking into giving it away to anyone
who pre-orders the album. we will let you know when and where you can
order it. just as an aside, my goal is to make everyone who has ever
bought an indigo girls record (how many of you are there? any guess?)
well aware of the release date well ahead of the time that it is being
released in february. then it is the record company's job to get it in
stores and in the hands of all of you.

on the touring front i can give you a general overview of our plans.
details have been and will be posted as soon as they are confirmed. any
specific dates that you may hear about before they are posted here are
unconfirmed and subject to change or simply inaccurate. be assured that
if we post it here, it is official. the european dates are confirmed as
posted. the next tour will be a pre-release, preview the album, club
tour. we are finalizing these dates now. next will be a series of college
dates in late march and april. amy and emily will then embark on a
lengthy summer tour starting in late may and extending through the
summer. they may take a break in the middle of it and perform some
festivals in europe. they will play theater dates in the fall. the club
and college shows will be duo acoustic and the summer ones will be with
the band.

do you have ideas for getting out the word on the new album? i would love
to hear them. send me an e-mail at igfan@mindspring.com with your
thoughts. look for a complete update of the site early next year. i
expect to see you, your friends and family out on road in 2002!

best regards and happy holiday - - russell carter

jill,

you are free to delete whomever you like, but what makes you think i'm
white, upper-middle-class or college educated?  i am, in fact, only one of
these.  aren't you being narrow minded?

don't assume anything.  (gee...that sounds familiar)

ask them....white or black.

you know, anyone who lashes out at other folks like this is either extremely
insecure or caught red-handed (and usually both). and yes, i naively bought
a cd from you in the old days which you indeed assured me was an original
silver pressed disc and when i received it, was obviously a cd-r. a nicely
done cd-r. but a cd-r nonetheless.

and really, is the price gouging necessary? yes, you may have some nice
collectables, but if you have most of them appraised, they are not nearly
worth (monetarily) what you are asking for them.

i think most of us who have shopped on ebay for memorabilia are happy to pay
what we think is  good market value for any particular item, such is the law
of supply of demand. but exhorbitant pricing (which passes beyond market
value and ventures into emotional consumerism)shows no respect for vendor,
consumer, or artist.

that is great if you really have a house that is full of museum quality
memorabilia. that is your mission and your prerogative. some of us, however,
are happy with having cd-r's--and maybe a few select pieces of memorabilia
that are meaningful to us. some of us choose to spend our money elsewhere.
just because someone is not willing to pay the inflated prices that you are
seeking does not make them lame, foolish, pitiful, or pathetic. and the fact
that they have chosen to bring these issues to light via this forum makes
them no less respectable, or even a target for that matter.

really?  how about osama bin laden?
no. as sister helen prejean has often said, it is not a case of whether
someone deserves to be punished for their sins or their crimes, it is that we
mere humans are not worthy to carry out such an extreme penalty as death. it
is best left in god's hands.

hi all,

just wondering if we could get back to the friendly little community that we
have once in a while.  there is a lot of exciting ig stuff coming up this
next year and i for one would love to hear about my fellow listees
excitement.  after all, that is why we are here.

as for ebay, i think we are all grown up enough to decide what we should or
should not bid on.  there are much bigger decisions in life that we all have
to make daily.

so anyway, i know you won't believe it, but i am planning on putting an
offer out for that long awaited san fran boot from this summer.  i will
probably post on it sometime shortly after christmas.

may each and every one of you have a safe and fulfilling holiday season.

oh wow, i didn't even recognize the title (i guess i had it listed on my boots as "forgiveness")...that's great!  i am now joining you in the pee-pee dance.  everybody, now.  let's all do the pee-pee dance.

and who gave you permission to look at those pictures?  :-)

on another note, it's kind of weird that 2-or-3-year-old songs are making it onto a release- they generally don't do that- the only songs i can think of it for are maybe "go" (although in a million different incarnations), "fare thee well," (originally intended for rop) and "nashville" (which must be the oldest).

oh, and sparkie, you were asking about the cons songbook...i asked for it for christmas, i know you can get it here:

yeah i have a couple 'a' three versions of it and something in each one just
resonates with me....hmmmm....looking forward to bitteroot ('nother goodie)
as well. although out of all the new songs, i do believe that deconstruction
has to be my favorite. it has a truly transcendent quality to it, sort of
like some of the oldies such as ghost, language of the kiss, you left it up
to me. best thing was sitting two feet from her at the first existentialist
gig when she belted out it out....good times, good times.

however, we can make positive stereotypes too.  for example, nobody on

wow!

i want to get in on this flame war about the ig items for sale by toerings. as a recent user of ebay,i have no problem buying any items at a fair price from anyone on-line.

i do have a problem with someone charging too much for items they probably got for the price of postage from one of the poor saps on this list that this seller is now attacking!

i will not pay what i feel is too much for anything and what people will pay should be up to them. i do feel that ig items are special and i do not think they should be used to make a 100% to 1000% profit for the seller unless some of that is kicked to either amy and emily or a cause they support.

that's my comment on that.

as far as mumia abu-jamal, a close friend of mine
was an african-american reporter who worked in
philadelphia at the time of the incident. he feels
that jamal is most likely guilty. others have written that jamal disrupted his own trial so that the sentence could be overturned later.

do these opinions make jamal guilty? no! do i think
jamal is guilty? i honestly do not know. i must say he may be and i need more evidence before i can say one way or the other. i don't think he is quite the innocent victim he is portraying himself to be, however.

i am happy that we now know that the name of the new album is "become you." the news of that has made my day.

i love to be able to come to this board be invloved with issues that portray both the best and the worst of the ig list. i love being an ig fan and i love coming here!

"become you" is amy's song about the confederate flag.  someone posted the
lyrics a while back.

>given their history of naming albums, i'd guess amy...

maybe emily came up with "rites of passage", but all the rest came from amy's
song, right?

'become you'  is definately an amy song.  they played it at some of thewest
coast shows this summer.  at sun theater amy introduced the song by saying,
"i'm constantly struggling with my southernism...grew up a lynnrd skynrd
(sp?)kind a girl and most of my friends are...."   it begins, " i heard you
sing the rebel song..."    it's a great song!!  but then..aren't they all?
you've got to show (emily song) is another favorite of mine.

can't wait!!!

thanks to those who wrote back.  i didn't know "become you" was the song about the confederate flag, but now it seems familiar.  the only songs i've heard are "you've got to show," "yield," "she's saving me" (why do i just know i'm going to weep when i hear this?), "deconstruction," "moment of forgiveness" and "nuevos senoritas."  hey, wait a minute...that's half the album!  i think that's a new record for me.

as for "winthrop," i'm totally with you on that one.  i'm disappointed we won't hear it.  the only thing we can hope for is maybe on the bonus disc (but i doubt it- why would it be relegated to a bonus disc?) or a hidden track (also probably doubtful).  any speculation as to what will be on the bonus disc?  maybe live tracks from the summer?

i'm not sure i can wait until february.

be the bitterroot song?

yeah!

they played it in the middle of chickenman on this past summer's tour.

"last night i was sleeping on a mountain top
got a million stars for my own wittness
in the mornin' i come down when the sun comes up
i take a drink from the bitterroot river
have you been lonely
yes i've been lonely
i've been lonely too
have you been lonely

ok, so that was just totally off the top of my head, but it's something like
that.

i'm with y'all.  can't wait for the new album!  i was hoping for "a moment of
forgiveness"  woo hoo!  and i kinda guessed that "nuevas senoritas" would be
on there.  i heard it live 3 times on the past year.  my favorite has to be
"deconstruction" (maybe that's because i just wrote a 22 page paper about
derrida...), but i love everything i've heard thus far.

now all we need are some tour dates.  ;)

all this talk of the new album puts me in the mood to hear some of these
songs again.  i heard many of them this summer when they toured, but i don't
have any copies to listen to now.  i know it's been discussed many times,
but i kind of turn a deaf ear sometimes (sorry)...where can i find mp3s or
.wav files of these new tunes??

thanks!

i bought this dual cd set import about 2 years ago.  it is a funky looking
cd in that it has purple/red/black kinda thrown all over it. the cd liner
and such are great with notes and such. i don't have it here right now. but
the 2 cd's are great. it is funny how when you haven't listened to a song
for a while it sounds so good.....right now secure yourself is on...and i
really like this one....the music is good i think.. also the version of kid
fears is good. i know it is an import...

funny, i thought we were fighting this stupid war to uphold "democracy" and

trial for someone no matter what they did. i am so fucking tired of

okay, so, i like sharing my personal problems
with several hundred people, so here goes....
(i'll try to be brief)

came out to mom and dad about 10 years ago.  both
freaked.  i had a gf who got blamed for
everything.  gf and i split after 5 years.  found
new gf and "married" her last year.  been
together 3 years in jan.  finally, after 10
years, i've decided that without my partner on
the holidays, i am sad.  without my family on the
holidays, i am sad.  either way i'm sad, no
matter what the holiday.  so, finally, after 10
years and some therapy, i've decided to spend all
holidays with my partner, not leaving for even 10
minutes to spend with my unaccepting family.
because i figure, if i can't be happy, i can at
least be right.

am i wrong to do this?  i mean, my brother (stuck
in the middle), is really upset with me and says
i need to be the bigger person.  is he right, or
should i stick to my guns?  my parents have
refused therapy, and have refused to make any
effort for understanding.  they won't read
anything i try to give them, yet they're still
stuck in the "how can this be really you when you
dated lots of boys and were a cheerleader?".
they think i'll get married one day.  i say i
already am and even if i did to a man, it doesn't
justify their behavior now.

should i give them their way and go home for a
couple hours on christmas and leave my
innocent-in-all-this partner alone (whose family
is not in this state), or not?  is christmas such
a time of giving that i should give this to them
as thanks for a happy childhood and let bygones
be bygones for a little while, or say, "hey, you
made this bed, now lie in it"?

advice, stories, help, etc. greatly appreciated,
please send them to me, not the list.

thanks in advance,
tara

don't kid yourself; this is a war of revenge with a healthy dose of
self-defense.  i'm not condoning everything we've done since sept 11, but
i think it's pretty evident what mr. bin laden stands for, considering we
have a videotaped confession.
as far as the body bag comment, that's too nice.  i'm all for something
offensive and painful -- like turning him over to the nypd.

dave/raoul might have a different take than most list members on "american

sarcasm. i was being sarcastic. i know it's revenge and an excuse for us to
convert the rest of the world to capitalism. i wasn't being sarcastic about
the hypocrite part.

i'm not trolling. in fact i didn't even start this thread.  yes, i've been
posting to rec.guns and have done so for years.  it's certainly no secret.
what does the fact that i am interested in guns have to do with the fact
that i also happen to like the indigo girls?  are they mutually exclusive?

maybe i do have a different take on american ideals than most list members.
so what?  this isn't a political list.  or at least it wasn't up until a few
days ago.  isn't there room for everyone?

nope, but it's a stretch.

sure there is. but your responses are inflammatory, and show little respect
for other points of view. if you want to discuss your point of view, then
_discuss._ one line pot shots aren't a good way to start, and are a pretty
good way to get yourself labeled a troll.

besides, the indigoes _are_ political. it's often difficult to discuss
their music without getting into politics.

my pressed copy is one cd - it is the audio from "live at the uptown

session from 1995....is it worth buying on ebay burned from someone - no -
will it be nice to get on cd -yeah - it actually is a very nice item.

unlike museum pieces, i play this from time to time. i picked it up at a
local store for 28 in 96 or 97, back when pressed cdrs were very plentiful.

assuming that it is the mountain top song she's been singing in the middle

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----

tonight i've been sleepin on the mountain top
with a billion stars for my witness
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up
i take a drink from the bitter root river

have you been lonely
yes i've been lonely
yes i've been lonely too

said now have you been lonely
yes i've been lonely
yes i've been lonely too

yeah well tonight i've been sleepin on the mountain top
with a billion stars for my witness
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up
i take a drink from the bitter root river

sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely too
sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely
sometimes been lonely too

tonight i've been sleepin on the mountain top
yeah i got a million stars for my witness
in the morning i go down as the sun comes up

sorry, but i don't get it.  do i have to agree with the ig's to enjoy their
music?

i don't think anything i've said is inflammatory.  if you do, it's only
because you disagree.

sure the ig's are political and i disagree with most if not all their
politics.  but i can still love them and their music, can't i.

in the video compilation "on the road to austin", there is a performance
toward the end w/amy wearing really cool black horn-rimmed geek glasses.
during this performance, she plays "lincoln douglas" solo.  then emily plays
a song called "play for free".  do any of you wonderful goheads out there
know anything about this song?  there's nothing on lifeblood about it.  any
info would be greatly appreciated.

oh yeah, i'd also like to wish all of you a safe and happy holiday season.

peace,
joey

okay, all these posts about a&e dolls have forced me to dig into my ig list
archives and find a definitively funny post on this subject, circa 1994.
it's a holiday classic from i-girl (are you still out there, you hilarious
chick?) and it still makes me laugh.

need some last-minute gift ideas?  having trouble shopping for that special
indigo girls fan on your list?  well, fret no more, because for a very
limited time you can order any of the following delightful items, each
designed with the insatiable ig fan in mind.  please read on for
descriptions:

for the child in everyone, we offer adorable amy and emily action figures!
amy is ready to jam in her ripped jeans with embroidered jacket (jangling
beads and silver ring sold separately), while emily sports her trademark
overalls and a white t-shirt.  each comes with six guitars tuned in weird
keys.  amy's strings pre-broken at factory.  (sorry, sara lee not
available.)

hate getting up in the morning?  well you'll rise and shine cheerfully with
our new "first to praise the sun" _talking_ alarm clock!  forget those
shrill buzzing alarms.  let amy wake you up *gently* with her calm
assertion:  "um, you're actually supposed to get up now.  but do whatever
you feel comfortable with."

surprise your friends with a package of our homemade fat-free bran muffins.
they're so delicious!  and they might be similar to muffins amy or emily
might have eaten once!

have you ever felt self-conscious at an ig show because you don't have "that
hair"?  well you can say goodbye to your insecurity with our exclusive
miracle wigs.  that's right. just slip one on before the next show, and
watch as you're instantly transformed!  you're sure to fit right in!  then
discreetly remove the wig afterwards, and no one but your date will be the
wiser.  you really can have "that hair"! in medium brown.  unisex.

been too happy lately?  need a good cry?  well, now there's "the very
essence of pain", a new compilation of the igs' most depressing songs.  let
amy and emily get you down with old heartbreakers like "hey jesus" and
"blood and fire", as well as newer ones like "fare thee well" and "ghost".
best of all, the songs are carefully sequenced to *maximize* your feelings
of emptiness and despair.  you won't find a glimmer of hope here--no
"watershed" or "galileo" to diffuse your pain--just your favorite downers,
back to back.  order several copies,  and share the agony with your friends!
  coffee and cigarettes not included.

well, those are the goods.  unfortunately, however, the time during which
they were available for purchase was so very limited that it actually
expired just now.  we regret the inconvenience.

-- from i-girl, who brings you glad tidings of great joy....because "great
tidings of glad joy" just didn't make any sense..

------------------------------------------------------

hope you enjoyed this blast from the past!  somebody's gotta get working on
those dolls 'cause we'd all be buying them.

heidi
(on the list since '93 and it's making me feel old and nostalgic)
