hey folks,

here's the article (from www.michal.com) that ryan
mentioned...

- -sherlyn

- ---begin article---
artist of the month --> amy ray

it's been a while since i've 1) profiled an artist and 2)
stepped up on to my soapbox, so this is my opportunity to do
both.

it's monday. i just got home from work. all i want to do is
unwind from a crappy day. but instead, i'm all wound up and
pissed off. you see, i got home from work today and
downloaded amy ray's new tune, "lucy stoners," from daemon
records' web site. normally, listening to new music doesn't
upset me, but as i listened to this song, i realized just how
true the words are, and just how much that truth angers me.

in a nutshell, "lucy stoners" is about how men are the
gatekeepers of the music industry and how they use their
control to discriminate against women. now of course, there are
certain exceptions to their rules, for example, if you're britney
spears and can be pimped out as a cash cow, or if you're a
woman without any social or political ideas of your own. but, if
you're a group like the indigo girls, you can put out album
after album, win a grammy and tour the country with sold out
shows for almost 20 years and still never make it on to the cover
of rolling stone.

how does that happen? how do we let that happen? as consumers,
we have this incredible power -- purchasing power -- that speaks
to record company execs, club owners, and magazine publishers in
the only voice they can understand. in the products that we buy,
and especially in the products that we don't buy, we can tell
them that we won't tolerate their misogyny and discrimination.
conversely, in purchasing from independent, socially friendly
businesses, we convey how much we support their efforts.

but off my soap box for a minute and back to amy ray and "lucy
stoners."

i love this new song, not only because i think it takes a brave
woman to stand up to the music industry, but also because it
rocks. ray collaborated on "lucy stoners" with the butchies, an
all woman punk band, and their synthesis is wild. the song is
pushed along by a great, driving, almost military beat and the
lyrics are stinging and exact. ray sums it up in the chorus by
singing, "janny wenner janny wenner/rolling stone's most fearless
leader/gave the boys what they deserve,/but with the girls he
lost his nerve."

one thing to note, this is not the indigo girls. amy ray's new
album is definitely a rock album -- if you come to it thinking
that amy ray's solo project is just the indigo girls minus one,
you'll be surprised and probably disappointed. but take away
those expectations, and what you'll find is that the tracks off
this album have the high quality you've come to expect from the
indigo girls, with the punk/rock flavor that only amy ray can
bring to the table.

so this is your chance to let your dollars shout out -- support
indie and women's music, and get a kick-ass record in the
process. on march 6, amy ray's new album stag will be released in
stores.  buy it. get your friends to buy it. get your co-workers
to buy it. and then, as a treat to yourself, go see amy ray live.
