"amy ray of the indigo girls also found her fury at a daytime gaby & mo's set and at a later performance
at the rainbow cattle company. introducing her solo debut, "stag" (daemon records), with the butchies,
the band that joins her on most of the album, ms. ray ripped off her folkie veneer to reveal the rocker
within. sultry and tumultuous, this was the sort of revelation that makes south by southwest worthwhile."

i always seem to get the magazines that put out the
print content before they update their site so here is
a verbatim blurb (not really review) about stag that
appears in the april/may issue of ms. magazine.
ms. april/may 2001 pg. 85
quicktakes
amy ray
stag
daemon records
it's not surprising that stag, the debut solo album by
amy ray of the indigo girls, is potentially political.
the lyrics are bursting with frustration about
everything from love to a music industry that's "a
stupid, secret whiteboy handshake that we'll never be
a part of " but what might take you aback is how much
it rocks. ray's folk-rock heart is still there , of
course, but there's a definite raucous element layered
in, thanks in part to backing by punk-rock musicans
like joan jett and the butchies.

i found this article on the billboard web site!
amy ray goes 'stag' across the u.s.
indigo girl amy ray has
announced an 18-city tour in
support of her debut solo album,
"stag." the tour, with indie-punk
outfit the butchies acting as ray's
backing band, kicks off with a
sold-out show march 29 in ray's
hometown of atlanta, and wraps up
with two april dates in san francisco. the butchies
will play an opening set each night.
"stag," released on daemon records, a nonprofit
independent that ray has run out of her decatur, ga.,
home for the past decade, features the butchies as the
backing band on half the tracks. the rock-a-teens,
joan jett, luscious jackson's kate schellenbach, and
the breeders' josephine wiggs also guest on the
punk-flavored album.
"getting these songs -- which run pretty left of indigo
girls -- off my chest was such a tremendous relief,"
ray told billboard recently. "last year, i found myself
writing more than ever. those songs needed a home.
now that i've made that happen, i feel a sense of relief
and accomplishment. i also find myself feeling
energized about making music again as an indigo girl."
