subject: [ig-news] 7/26 saratoga tickets

hi all--
i have 3 tickets that i need to get rid of for the 7/26 saratoga show.  they
are in section 3, row s, seats 8-10, which is slightly better than what
ticketmaster will give you now (it can only get worse from here).  i just
need to get what i paid for them, which was $125.70 for all three ($41.90
each).  i wanted to offer the tickets to the list first, but if i don't get
a response by the time they go on sale on the 8th, i'll post it on local
lists like craigslist.com, and they'll go on a first come, first serve
basis.
thanks!
leslie

i have the flu, & i don't anticipate a miraculous recovery by tomorrow
night. even if i'm half-recovered, i'll still be too sick to enjoy the
show. so, even tho' it sucks, i'm selling my ticket to the bowery
ballroom show tomorrow night. i paid $12 + $2.80 in fees; i'll sell it
for $14.00 even. i work in manhattan; i have the ticket w/me today &
will have it tomorrow. if anyone wants it, you'll have to pick it up
fr. me in manhattan. please contact me privately @
pixiepixie@postmark.net if there are any takers!

going 'stag': indigo girl amy ray takes measure of herself with hard-edged
solo album
by brett milano
wednesday, april 4, 2001

who'd have thought that one of this year's toughest punk rock albums would
come from an indigo girl?

for anyone who's followed the duo over the years, the sound of amy ray's new
album ''stag'' won't be a total surprise: she's always been the grittier of
the two, the closet rock 'n' roller in the sensitive duo.

but she pushes harder on the solo disc, whose songs are more politically and
sexually outspoken than hers have been in the past. and she gets raucous
backup from the butchies, the north carolina female punk band who will also
be performing with her at lilli's on saturday. the show is sold out.

''it was something i had to do before i was 40,'' ray said recently from her
home in atlanta. ''over the last five years i've been writing more
prolifically, and there were some bands i felt i had to work with. and i'd
begun to put songs in their proper categories: there were some that called
for a single voice and were maybe a little more pointed in their point of
view.

''and you can't do too much of that with indigo girls, because our best stuff
is about harmonies and countermelodies. and some songs weren't right for
emily (indigo partner emily saliers). i love playing with her, but we make no
bones about our differences.''

one of the songs that saliers balked at was ''lucystoners,'' a female
rockers' anthem that disses rolling stone publisher jann wenner by name. ''i
played that one for emily and it went over like a lead balloon; she didn't
feel comfortable with it at all. jann wenner is someone that i've always been
kind of infatuated with at the same time as being disgusted with him. his
notorious sexism is just amazing to me.

''so i was going to use him as a jumping-off point; then emily told me she'd
just done an interview with one of those morning-show djs who had completely
insulted her. so the other verses fell into place; it became a song about the
evolution of sexism in the industry and the need to create our own.''

both of the indigo girls have come out as lesbians, though it doesn't
necessarily figure into their songwriting. but ray deals with sexuality on
the new album's ''measure of me,'' a gender-shifting love song partly
inspired by the story of brandon teena in the film ''boys don't cry.'' but
she says some of the inspiration was more personal.

''i enjoyed a couple of years of being single recently, and i found that
there were a couple of guys i was interested in and i was feeling awkward
about it,'' she said. ''so i was tackling that a little bit when i wrote
it.''

ray released her album on her own daemon label, a longtime home for outspoken
singer-songwriters including atlanta's michelle malone and boston resident
rose polenzani. ''i guess the blessing and curse of the indigo girls' career
is that our label (epic/sony) doesn't pay much attention to us and don't give
us the support they used to, but we can go out and do anything we want,''
said ray. ''if i put out a record on my own label, they know i'm not trying
to create some alternate career. even if they tried to sue me, it's a
separate entity from indigo girls and it's not something i'm doing for
profit.''

the indigo girls have gotten louder in recent years, but ray says they'll
reverse that trend when they head back to the studio. ''it's going to be a
folk record,'' she said. ''that's something i've been trying to talk emily
into for years, since she normally likes doing bigger produced albums. but
i've always thought we could make a real rocking little folk record, and
that's going to happen this year.

''we're going to record in early summer and then we'll tour acoustic with
some small amount of drums, some small amount of bass,'' she added. ''our
band is amazing now and they're real good at celtic kinds of music. you'll be
hearing more of that as well.''

subject: [ig-news] echo lounge review and thoughts (long)

[sherlyn's note: this is an excerpt of a message which was originally
sent to the indigo girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

hey everybody,

after returning from a fantastic pilgrimage to atlanta, taking in a dar
williams show in athens, michelle malone at eddies and the gorgeous ms amy
ray, to name a few, i am totally depressed to be back in england.

anyhoo, i've noticed a distinct lack of reviews about the excellent amy show
at echo lounge and since i can't find the energy to write something coherant
for myself, here's what i found on the atlanta journal-constitution site:

a solo indigo concert review
amy ray makes night her own at echo lounge
by shane harrison atlanta journal-constitution staff writer

it looked like girls' night out at the echo lounge in east atlanta thursday
night, which was packed with female fans of almost every age and style. but
these women (and the handful of men on hand) were there to rock. the
occasion was indigo girls' amy ray live bow as a solo artist, and it just
confirmed what her debut solo album, "stag," hinted: she's at the peak of
her powers as a musician, songwriter and performer. before ray took the
stage, the out-and-proud lesbian punk trio the butchies (from north
carolina) had the predominantly female crowd screaming like
teenyboppers at an 'n sync concert. it's clear that guitarist and vocalist
kaia wilson is the new lesbian sex symbol. smart, witty and playfully lusty,
she attacked her six-string with fervor, singing the band's punk-fueled
tunes in a voice sometimes painfully vulnerable and occasionally seething
with anger. on any other night, she'd be the star she so obviously deserves
to be. this was amy ray's night, though, and she wore it well.

appearing center stage with just a mandolin, ray launched into the breakneck
appalachian folk-punk of "stag's" lead-off track, "johnny rottentail." the
capacity crowd responded by stomping along
hard enough to shake the club. bringing the butchies back out as her backing
band, ray cranked things up with her album's catchiest and most incendiary
song, "lucystoners," an indictment of the music industry's lack of respect
for female artists. rocking with the vigor of a teenager, ray made it look
easy. it certainly didn't hurt to have the butchies' phenomenal skin-pounder
melissa york and statuesque bassist alison martlew providing the solid
backbeat. a mid-set version of the buzzcocks lovelorn punk classic "ever
fallen in love" even inspired the breakout of a couple of impromptu mosh
pits. proving that this was a low-key
indie-rock operation (and the tour's first night), the only problems
occurred with delays between songs. before ending with a pounding
version of tom petty's "refugee," ray told the audience, "thanks for putting
up with all our transitions. we're still learning how to go from one song to
the next." those between-song lulls couldn't dampen the hometown heroine's
triumphant tour kick-off. in answer to her apology for the minor
inconvenience, we can only offer: it was our pleasure.

- -----------

[...]

[...] we were so delighted when emily went onstage to join group sex for rousing
versions of van halen's 'you really got me' and a passionate, sing-along
filled 'school's out' by alice cooper. amy then came back to the stage &
joined them for rod stewart's 'maggie may'.  emily was playing a new
instrument, a mandola and amy on mandolin.  although they were really just
part of the band for that one, we nearly all fainted when they took centre
stage and kinda played duelling mandolins for a while as a solo.  wow!

[...]

thanks for reading,

claudine
