hometown girls make good again

"they don't need an introduction, but i love to do it," said 99x's steve
craig. "here they are, amy and emily, indigo girls." the curb-to-curb crowd
roared their approval of the hometown duo. their biggest hit, "closer to
fine," got things started, with the fans singing the song's title line each
time the chorus came around. "it's just the two of us today, y'all," emily
saliers said, but that was better than fine. saliers remains a thoughtful and
underrated guitarist, providing lovely leads on songs such as "the power of
two." she and bandmate amy ray sailed through a best-of show that included an
energetic "shame on you" and a touching take on ray's ode to her grandmother,
"ozilline." "she was cool," ray said. then, gesturing toward the sunset side
of the sky, she added, "she's buried over there in the west end."
