a few people have mentioned coming to nashvegas for the february show. the
show will be at 3rd & lindsley, which is a small...er..."cozy" little bar
close to downtown. the day i heard about the show (last thursday), i called
the bar and spoke to the owner. he said they had just booked the show
officially that day, and he didn't have any information on how tix would be
sold/distributed yet. (he mentioned something about this being a
radio-sponsored date??? hmmm...) anyhoo, as soon as there is any ticket
info, he says it'll be posted on their website (www.3rdandlindsley.com <http://www.3rdandlindsley.com/>). if
i find out anything, i'll post it for the group.

these are official releases from epic. they have probably been sent out
to radio and retail to promote the album. it just comes in a cardboard
sleeve with a sticker on it stating the album title, album tracks,
produced by..., and album in stores feb 26th 2002 (which is kinda out of
date now huh!?). it then says "demonstration - not for sale". how do i
know this? a copy that i bought off ebay arrived this morning! :-) i
just had to buy it to prepare for the upcoming tour. the album sounds
great you guys - very mellow after cons and sots, but very good. emily
sounds in great voice. and lots of harmonies throughout, so i think
we're all in for a treat.

please excuse me for sounding a bit churlish this morning, but maybe i'm not
the only one to have noticed that every single one of the "articles" about
by that have run in various publications over the past couple of weeks is,
in fact, the identical press release from ig and/or epic about the release
of the new album. i know that there are people who collect this sort of
stuff, but surely at this point it would be enough just to reference each
article by pub name and date without reproducing the entire thing.
thanks,

i honestly wasn't aware this was such a controversial issue. it only seems
obvious to me that a child would benefit most from a two parent family with
a committed and loving mother and father.
men and women are very different in their nature and as such bring very
different perspectives to parenting. children need to have the advantage of
exposure to both ways of looking at and dealing with situations.
this is not to say that singles, gays and lesbians can't be loving parents,
but it takes more than just love to be a good parent.

guys...
i have heard many, many songs that have been written about september 11th.
until now the only one of them that wasn't complete sentimental shite
(including paul mccartney's) was by nancy falkow.
i can count the number of songs that have brought a tear to my eye in the
last couple of years on just one hand - this is one of them. $5 is a
bargain. please donate. now.
from richard shindell's website:
<http://www.younghunter.com/wnyc.html>
"wnyc is a public radio station in new york city whose main transmitter and
back-up transmitter were mounted on the north tower of the world trade
center. the cost of replacing these antennas is expected to be over $4
million.
to raise funds for wnyc, we are making an mp3 of my new song "i am"
available for a minimum donation of $5... all proceeds will go directly to
the station.
we have chosen this organization not just because of its great need but
because of its commitment to balanced debate... thank you so much for your
support" - richard shindell

dave

dave, i will take your comment as you indicate and take a moment to state
something.
having 2 parents who love you is a wonderful thing. you are correct in
saying that love alone does not raise a child. in fact i am particularly
found o fthe it takes a village to raise a child ( or at least goo
dfriends). that being said.
what if. you have one parent who is very aware of personal self, confidence,
business, educated, tender yet does correct the child as needed and usually
does the more " house hold " duties. tends to bills, tidies up, etc..the one
concerned with the house...teaching the child about cleanliness, respect,
manners, etc.
the other parent love sports of all kinds, works with wood, and all things
around the house to fix them, fix the car, do the yard, build a dog house,
teach the m to change the oil, know how to recycle things, loving as well ,
disciplines as well, praises the child equally as the other parent.
both parents have days where all is grand and also days where it is not.
both turn to child to give hugs and receive them.
both try to make it to all school functions, book drives, pumpkin carving
things...
the child learns from both , in different ways, from different view
points....
neither of the parents is male.
child is between 5 and 6 grades ahead of class mates in all matters of
learning and interaction
a wonderful natural artist and very kind.....

>men and women are very different in their nature and as such bring very
>different perspectives to parenting. children need to have the advantage

1. blah blah blah. there is no 'male nature,' nor any 'female nature.'
there is gender socialization, i.e. what you are taught by society, patently
and implicitly, to be. do you think girls are born wanting to shave their
legs? do you think boys pop out wanting to play with g.i. joes? studies
have been done, dave. it's socialization, not innate nature.
1.5. throw transgendered and transsexual folks into your theorizing. what
does that do to your argument? is it better for a child to be raised by a
lesbian and an ftm (i.e. one 'female' role model and one 'male' role model)
than by two lesbians? yes, you say? but wait-- they're both biological
women. so according to your male/female nature argument, that would mean
that the ftm (the 'male' model) would still have that darn 'female' way of
dealing with things (crying, writing poetry, snuggling with a kitty kat, all
those things that each and every female in creation does when they can't
deal). i'm seeing some spaces in your theory.
2. even if there were a male and a female nature, there would still be more
than one-way-per-sex of dealing. for example. i, by all stretches of the
imagination, am female. so is, say, diane wong (hi diane!). now, let's
stick me and diane in a laboratory and throw the exact same traumatizing
experience our way-- say, we both are denied buffalo tickets because we
don't know the password. got that? okay. according to what you seem to be
implying, since diane and i both possess xx chromosomes, we will both
exhibit the same womanly way of dealing with our lack-of-concert-ticket
anguish. let's see.
checking in on diane, we see that our wily heroine has gathered her brainy
wits about her and started an analytical conjecture about the nature of
concert tickets and public demand. because dr. diane is, after all, a
doctor, she uses math to determine exactly how many minutes she has to take
action before she winds up anywhere past the 6th row. she then develops an
action plan, emails all of you wackos, and gets the password. ta-da,
diane's in the 3rd row.
i, however, being my usual roundabout, imaginative, spacy self, had taken to
fantasizing about amy coming down and rescuing me from my 37th-row-seat and
pulling me onstage to harmonize with her. i started brainstorming in every
direction-- what if i call ticketmaster and cry? what if i storm the gate?
what if i just call diane? i don't know what to do!! i got overwhelmed and
calmed myself by sniffing my aromatherapy inhaler. by the time you guys
check on me, i'm a crumpled heap of jill in the corner of the lab. (you'll
be happy to know i ultimately wind up in the 3rd row too. thanks to my
sparkling wit and dastardly cuteness, i seduce mike reynolds (hi mike!) into
giving me his extra ticket. whee.)(of course this is all hypothetical. the
only time i turn into the crumpled heap of jill is when i'm throwing a
concert.)
so, anyhow. i ask you now, dave, which is the female nature? mine or
diane's? i know men who exhibit stereotypically 'female' ways of kicking
around. and i know women, myself especially, who get things done by being
rather un-feminine.
jilly "i got boobs but no maternal instinct" c

i know that there has been a request to take this discussion off list.
however, i just wanted to mention that the results of recent studies show
that children of lesbians and gays are often more socially well-adjusted,
do better in school and are more tolerant than children from traditional
households. i am happy to share the citations for this study with anyone
who requests it privately.

hi all,
i posted about this a few days ago, but i had somehow gotten unsubbed, and i
don't know if it ever came through. long story short, i somehow missed my
window of opportunity to get tix for the bowery ballroom concert in nyc, for
which i have not stopped kicking myself, and i was wondering if anyone out
there possibly has any extras? also, tickets are now on sale, as of this
morning, for the drew university concert in madison, nj through ticketmaster.
i actually would be willing to part with two of my drew u tickets for two
bowery tickets. let me know off list.
thanks,

ban on gay marriages bill now in congress
there is a u.s. constitutional
amendment being proposed that will ultimately ban
homosexual marriages/civil unions
and possibly domestic partner benefits in the future.
it is being pushed through
congress quickly so as to make as little noise as
possible.

there's so much else in the news
right now, that the amendment is not being noticed.
this petition is being organized
by a second party -- it's not an "add your name to the
bottom and forward" kind of thing.

go to the site itself in order to
sign the petition. please pass this along to your
friends
and family, and to our straight
allies. by doing so, we can convey the message that
the
constitution is about human
rights, not just "white rights" or "christian rights"
or even
"heterosexual rights."

please read, sign, and forward

where is it? who's sponsoring it? the group "alliance for marriage" cannot
sponsor an amendment proposal. what person from what state is sponsoring
the amendment? when is the debate scheduled? that website link you gave is
a little low on details.
for example, just because i say there should be an amendment to keep white
people out of the irs doesn't mean it will ever happen. are you going to
form a petition against my position if i create an organization called
"alliance against a white irs" and publish my opinion?
think, people!

i'd just like to take a moment and direct people to
<http://www.breakthechain.org/> for resources relating to e-mail chains and
online petitions.
the signing of an online petition is not nearly as effective as a personal
letter or phone call to your congressfolk.
as breakthechain.org says of online petitions:
" sign a petition on the web -- but make sure it asks for your
full name and street address, and make sure it says to whom the signatures
will be delivered and when. also try to make sure the petition comes from
an organization you trust -- there are a lot of unscrupulous folks who
collect addresses (email and snailmail) and personal information to
exploit for their own gain. don't sign if the site does not have a privacy
statement available explaining precisely what protections you are
afforded."
the petition referred, for example, has a short, nonspecific message and
is rife with grammatical errors.
for more on effective ways to tackle an activist cause:

<http://www.cbsnews.com/now/story/0,1597,300707-412,00.shtml>
(ap) worried that courts might open the door to gay marriage, a coalition of
religious leaders and family-policy experts wants to amend the u.s.
constitution with a declaration that marriage can only be between a man and
a woman.
the federal marriage amendment, to be presented thursday at a news
conference in washington, would require ratification by both houses of
congress and the legislatures of 38 states to become law.
gay-rights advocates describe the initiative as "gay-bashing," while its
backers say the amendment would prevent judges from setting family policies
that lack public support.
matt daniels, executive director of the alliance for marriage, said
coalition members decided to propose the amendment because of fears that
vermont's year-old civil union law - granting marriage-like rights to
same-sex couples - would spawn lawsuits nationwide by gays seeking similar
rights.
"let's challenge the homosexual movement to play fair on the playing field
of democracy," daniels said. "if they want the benefits of marriage
allocated to a wider circle of groups, they need to convince the majority of
people that it's the right thing."
the idea of a marriage amendment was raised in 1998 by an alliance of
conservative christian groups. daniels' coalition doesn't include those
organizations, but its 45-member advisory board has a strong religious tilt,
including leaders of major black denominations, an episcopal bishop, several
roman catholic officials, and representatives of jewish and muslim groups.
its lay members include professors from princeton university, amherst
college and the law schools of harvard, notre dame and louisiana state.
daniels said members of congress from both parties were prepared to support
the amendment, but their names will be released later - not at thursday's
news conference.
"we believe this is more important than partisan politics, so we'll announce
it with no politicians at the microphone," he said.
thirty-four states already have adopted so-called "defense of marriage"
laws, defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman. daniels is
optimistic that enough state legislatures would ratify the proposed
amendment for it to pass.
however, he said it might take several years to mobilize enough support in
congress. there have been 27 amendments to the constitution - only one of
them ratified since 1971.
"congress won't act until the situation is more alarming to more people,"
daniels said. "it will require more developments in the courts - but i have
no doubt that it will happen."
vermont legislators enacted the civil union bill last year in compliance
with a state supreme court order saying same-sex couples were entitled to
the same rights as heterosexual married couples. since then, more than 2,300
civil union ceremonies have been performed in vermont, mostly involving
out-of-staters.
opponents of gay marriage predict that increasing numbers of those
non-vermont couples will turn to the courts in their own states, seeking
recognition of their union.
one such case is now before georgia's court of appeals, while seven
massachusetts couples have sued to overturn their state's ban on same-sex
marriages.
the spokesman for a major gay-rights organization, david smith of the human
rights campaign, denounced the proposed amendment as "a mean-spirited attack
on gay families."
"it would create a constitutionally mandated second class of citizens," he
said.
daniels, however, said his alexandria, va.-based alliance was taking a
"reasonable, centrist approach."
the amendment was supported in an editorial this month in the conservative
magazine national review, which called it "the only sure way to prevent a
harmful and antidemocratic revolution in american law."
as drafted, the amendment would be just two sentences:
"marriage in the united states shall consist only of the union of a man and
a woman.
"neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or
federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal
incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."

a nice pretty email from rose polenzani, who is, in and of herself, sigc.
there are concert dates listed here for almost every corner of the
contigious 48 (and even alaska! but no hawaii yet, sorry lori ann). i
expect you all to be in attendance and emailing me (or our unfortunate
resident hawaiian) a full report of just how lovely the ladies are. my
oberlin singy-songy friend (straight gals, he's really cute) josh ritter
opens some of them there dates.
------------- says one miss polenzani: -------------------
voices live in your town
okay, it may not be your town exactly
the "voices on the verge" (rose p, jess klein, erin mckeown and beth
amsel) are days away from embarking on their first ever cross country tour!
it may be the only time voices will come to your town, as the fate of the
project is unknown. it's fun while it lasts, anyway. i almost never get to
play the tambourine outside of voices. not only that, but i can't possibly
pull off "tainted love" by soft cell on my own.
this is no songwriter-in-the-round show; we are all on stage
together, playing and singing together. you'll hear a lot of harmony,
creative experimentation, first trys, polished gems, and good times. jess
plays the clarinet (did you know?), i'm playing a box (?) and sometimes
there's a piano in the house. i can only say to you that every time we play
i see so many smiles that i am sold anew on this project. come out and have
a really good time. you'll go home inspired to collaborate with your friends
and pick up the guitar. you'll go home singing! dates through february are

quite correct. and, i did an online search and researched the subject
before i posted my reply. in fact, it was the main reason for my
reply. a website acting as host for a petition on such a topic should
provide the whole story, or at the very least links to it. any
position can be presented to someone who would not otherwise have the
facts on an issue in such a way as to win their support. this kind of
"amendment proposal" is attached to other political baggage that was
not mentioned and would most likely kill it before it reached the
front door.
nevertheless, i do appreciate your vigorous reply, jill. you're
nothing if not consistent. :)

re:

i have a friend who is a unitarian universalist minister (and a lesbian) who recently sent email about this -- then sent a follow-up apology the next day after talking with uu officials in washington, dc. from what they say, there is no current legislation in congress re: a ban on gay marriages. the petitions online site is a web site where anyone can create petitions about anything. and someone has done so with this subject. it is good to remain vigilant about this issue, but there is nothing imminent. so please, do not panic.
and considering how some mass. pro-gay online signatures got "forwarded" to some anti-gay campaigns, please be careful of what you do sign.

i'm very ticket worthy. really. ask sherlyn. she'll vouch for me. unless

i will probably have some extra tickets for the seattle show. if anyone is
still in need, let me know.
also, i did a real dumb thing. i saw some promo cd's on ebay, and i thought
they were the border's bonus cd's so i bought a couple, forgetting about the
indie record store promotion. i already had two, now i have bought and paid
for two more. anyone interested in these? they have live versions of faye
tucker and trouble.
also, for my future reference, what songs are on the borders promo cd that
came out with the retrospective?
the mountain, kmtt is advertising the seattle concert as a "private
concert - you can't buy tickets to this show!" what is that all about? is
there another shindig going on that day? i can't imagine that there is. i
think that they are full of it. i bought tickets, as did many others. they
have not answered my email clarifying my question. i doubt that they will,
since they haven't already.

howdy ya'll,
ok, so i just saw the update and they're actually
coming to my very own state, wi! i fully intend to be
in madison on the 20 march, but i'm having trouble
locating the orpheum theater online, and if anyone has
any info as to how i can get tickets for this show,
email me as soon as possible, i don't want to get
caught with my pants down, so to speak, this is my
very first ig concert and i'm about ready to pop i'm
so excited! also, are most of the tickets gonna be
sold through ticketmaster or is there another site
that all the tickets are being preordered through?
excuse me if this has already been discussed to death,
just email me privately, you'd make a very excited
first time concert goer *very* happy. peace and love
to all of you, and good luck to *everyone* trying to
get to a concert, i feel for you, finally!!!

the orpheum is at the top of state street. it's the movie theatre across from the civic center. their tix are usually not avail through ticketmaster, so i don't know how it'll work. it's also general admission to all shows, as far as i know.

in 1997 they played a small club that was kmtt winners only - i know kmtt
does this quite a bit from being a fervent fan of the seattle music scene
(ok, i listen to seattle radio via realaudio - but it is kuow, the public
radio station)
so it probably is a small promo type gig...in addition to the show you got
tixs to

i just wrote bill maher of politcally incorrect to demand that he start
including more people from the glbt community on his show whenever he's
going to bring up his issues on gay rights on his show .....as
homophobic as bill maher is....his questions which are coming up more
frequently right now.....are important
because a lot of heterosexual people simply don't understand things
like why are there gay neighborhoods, and why do gays need a "gay"
tv channel.
what i disagree with is bill maher on is how he's handling the subject,
and i feel that if enough people flood his office with letters and
emails and petitons.....the glbt community just might be able to respond
in public to his criticisms and questions.

i asked him to put ellen, or melissa, or ani, or
especially our dear ig.
think about it. it's worth a chance.

you know - new england is never a difficult place to see the ig - i mean -
until today - i know of a handful of shows that were difficult to get in (
student only, basically) but we have newport, tixs for nff never sell out
the first month, let alone first day. the college shows - again - it is odd
to go a week and not have it sold out.
but, there was mass confusion at next - next said no ticket limit yesterday
on the phone - then the promoter sent an email saying a two ticket limit -
and if you look on next's site - i mean quite a few good shows arent sold
out - in fact - the only sold out show is ig.
this is very wierd, i mean the paradise is a small small club. it was sold
out within the hour - no internet sales seemed to happen.
i know an awful lot of folks got shut out of this show - and nyc is sold
out too, philly is a little far to drive for an hour long live set. i am
shaking my head - people i always see at ig shows - i mean people who are
waiting 8+ hours at ga shows - did not get tixs. i have no idea if rcam has
any idea how their ticketing was handled (i am not complaining personally,
i had a friend get a ticket for me - i was supposed to be at work, but am
well, home, sick.
it doesnt all add up. there is a community of fans who i always see at ig
shows - like clockwork - i mean we as individuals make the cultures we want
to be associated with - this list is definitely after nine years one of the
communities that is dear to me - it is strange that this was the first
music listserv i joined and of all the other bands i love - this is the one
i am still on.
maybe a ticket release will happen - it sorta makes sense with like every
major college in the boston area - but outlets with five tickets each?????
someone stop the insanity.
hopefully everyone who needs tixs finds them. heck - why did they not have
it at the avalon? it is still small, great venue and a hell of a lot people
could fit in...
and there is a station that webcasts loads of boston clubs - the paradise
isnt one of them.
obnigc - go now and buy a coldplay album - great band...

ok - looking at digital club network - amy played a few solo shows that are
archived - the 2/11/01 show looks to be at their venue - i think they like
webcast everything at their venues - there was something in the nytimes
last month about it. but - who knows - this is just an rather educated
speculation.
the knittingfactory in la seems to webcast their events - 2/18 is that
show...i dont count that till i see it on their calendar.
third and lindsey used to have a live radio thing - i dunno now tho - i
guess i could look that up - but that is more radio appearences type thing
- and i will bet a bunch of those will happen.
the metro in chicago and first avenue are both dcn clubs - so that is a
possible 4 webcasts. yeah - i know - how bored and dorky i can be at times
- and kmtt will probably do something. maybe i need to put up some sort of
web site

there are tickets for santa cruz on ebay, which are cheap compared to
the 115 bucks per ticket that some dill-hole wants for the anaheim show.
when supply doesn't meet demand, thats what you get. anybody know what
face value has been for most shows?
good luck to all, personally my wife is nervous about getting shut out
in atlanta. that will be a hard ticket i am sure!!!!!!!! - todd

hey folks,
it's time for me to exit the great state of denial and admit that
i just don't really have the time or energy to be the main keeper
of the indigo girls faq anymore. it's been a lot of fun but it's
just not something that i have time to keep up with these days.
and, truth be told, it's been that way for a long time.
so, is there anybody out there who'd like to take over? i'm
still happy to be on the team and help out with editing and stuff,
but i just can't drive this bus anymore...
drop me a line in private if you're interested in pitching in.
cheers,
sherlyn

remember, there are two things that keep us oppressed: them and us. we are
half of the equation. there will not be a magic day when we wake up and
its now ok to express ourselves publicly. we must make that day ourselves,
by speaking out publicly first in small numbers, then in greater numbers,
until its simply the way things are and no one thinks twice.

i'm about as ripped as everyone else is...i was on the phone at 0959 hrs and
tried for 23 minutes to get through (hangup, re-dial, hangup, re-dial, etc)
all while having been up almost 24 hrs and dealing with college student
insanity snowball fight at work last night. the first time i got through i
heard that there were no tickets left. at 1023. ripped is to put it mildly.
i haven't missed an ig show since 1997 in new england or new york. i'm just
trying to figure out who to complain to at this point. sounds like the
ticket outlet did some hinky stuff.
as it is i was supposed to go to boston with my girlfriend and another
friend for the show, spend the weekend. we were meeting up with other
friends/sig. other's - and needless to say only one person has a ticket.
screw it. i'm going to maine that weekend i think....don't want to be
anywhere near boston and not have tickets for that show.

hey, everyone,
with apologies for the cross-post: i just saw today
that ferron will be playing at the tin angel in philly
on saturday night. i called and they said plenty of
tickets are available. i am leaning toward going, but
am not certain, so i don't want to commit to being
there for anyone, but don't let that stop you. she is
a wonder! she is one of the true pioneers of the
so-called "womyn's music," but for my money, she is
"merely" an extraordinary singer-songwriter. go see
her!

tickets.com
<<http://www.tickets.com/venue_info.cgi?venue_id=11528>>
and ticketweb
<<http://www.ticketweb.com/user/?region=sfbay&query=schedule&venue=catalyst>>
*were* selling tickets, but i just checked their web sites,
and both services look like they've sold all their allotment.
that suggests the only ticket source left is the box office:

remember, this show is 21+, unlike the sf show which is all ages.

i remembered all week that tickets for the boston show went on sale today,
but then i got busy at work and forgot. ( k-mart filing chapter 11 is
making my life miserable) it sold out. :-(
i went so far as to call russell carter management to find out when those
tickets would go on sale because i knew it was a small venue and i wanted to
be sure i'd get a pair.

i could just cry.

does anyone have any tickets to spare? i'll do just about anything for
them...
anyone know if they plan any further tour dates in the new england area?
aw rats.

there are very strict rules about selling tickets online and we know $115 is
not face value. i believe the law in california is you can only ask for $2
over face per ticket. if they are breaking this, you can report them to
safeharbor@ebay.com and inform them of the illegal auction. the way it is
supposed to work is once the face value +$2 is met, the auction is to be
ended by the seller and then y'all complete the transaction. caveat,
safeharbor seems to enforce the rules/laws when they feel like it and you
should use the old process of "if mom says no, ask dad" (just report it
again and someone else will have to investigate it). you can also send email
to timesensitive@ebay.com for faster response.

no, i dont have any tickets to offer. but, it's been a while since i have mentioned the baigls list (boston area indigo =
girls list) here on the main list. since there may be some new folks in the new england area... we have an area email li=
st that may be of interest. you dont have to be in boston, or really even in new england, to be on it. that's just our =
area of focus. other concerts in the boston area that may be of interest are announced too. other baigls came up short =
on tickets for the boston show, but information is already coming up on other ways to get them.. wbos is apparently givin=
g away tix. the concert, and any potential list gatherings, are certain to be hot topics on teh list (which is actually =
pretty low traffic, really, and pretty well on topic). so, if anyone is interested in joining, email me directly. i'm th=
e listowner and i'll get you set up.
thanks!

hi,
i think it was ryan who posted about ticket laws and ebay. well, sadly i
deleted that post. (ryan, if you wouldn't mind forwarding it to me, that
would be great). anyway, i saw on ebay that someone was selling two slim's
tickets for $300 (starting price). uhhhh... wait... didn't i pay like $42
for the same tickets (it's gen. admission). i think i want to report that.
since i have so many friends without slim's tickets, that makes me furious.

welcome to economics 101. your first lesson - supply and demand...
reporting it ain't going to do any good. ebay policies don't apply for

hey all!
quick question... i was looking on ebay tonight and there are 2 tickets to the nyc show selling for $40 which seems fair, as the tickets list at $20 a pop. the problem is the buy now price is $100. seems a bit high to me.
if the seller of these tickets is on the list i mean no disrespect. i am gonna bid, but i is it legal to sell so high. i missed the thread about the ebay rules, as i deleted my mail before i saw this item. if someone can send me that post in private, that would be cool.

at that price, my favorite is the sony wm-sr1 recording "walkman".
be sure to use the right kind of tape... it's designed to *record* on
"normal" type i tapes only, though it plays type i and type ii tapes.
sony's wm-sr1 page is:

>but i would like good sound quality. is there a way i could get

i have several good boots of shows which were recorded on that kind
of machine. the wm-sr1 comes with it's own stereo lapel-style mic,
though be careful of the somewhat fragile mic cord... i usually keep
the cord tucked under my shirt, running down to the waist-pack where
i keep the recorder... that way, the cord is not likely to get caught
on anything when i'm in a crowded club.
>since i have no computer is a mini cassette recorder my best option?
i think so... you might be able to find a used md recorder at that
price, but unless i knew the seller was super-reliable, i would not
*ever* buy a used md; too likely that it's been dropped or otherwise
damaged.
also, md recorders don't come with microphones, so you'd need to buy
that also, $50-80 minimum... and minidiscs cost more than analog tapes.

>if so where could i get one for under $100?
i've seen them at circuit city and good guys for about $70.
the cheapest i've seen on-line is about $50, at:
you can read other's opinions of on-line sources here:

indigo girls
become you

amy ray
vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin, bouzouki, harmonica
emily saliers
vocals, 6 & 12 string acoustic guitar, classical guitar, electric guitar,
bouzouki, mandolin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
don't be surprised if you're immediately hooked by the opening notes of "moment
of forgiveness."
warm, open-hearted and honest - with an instantly memorable melody that lies
somewhere between folk and soul - the single is the perfect kick-off track for
become you, the indigo girls' new epic album and arguably the best work of
their remarkable two-decade career.
it wouldn't be fair to call this a "back-to-basics" recording, since that would
short-change the enormous creative growth they're demonstrated on their
previous eight full-length albums and career-spanning anthology. instead, amy
ray and emily saliers approached become you as a chance to summon their
expansive artistic vocabulary and use it to more fully explore the core
elements that have given their music such enduring appeal - rich acoustic
instruments, pitch-perfect harmonies and lyrics that reflect their
ever-deepening understanding of themselves and the world, but always leave room
for listeners to join them on the journey.
to round out their sound, the girls turned to their versatile touring group:
carol isaacs (hammond b-3, wurlitzer, piano, accordion, penny whistle,
recorder, percussion), clare kenny (acoustic and electric bass) and brady blade
(drums and percussion). the result: a beautifully constructed folk-pop album
that shows off the indigos' contrasting but complimentary songwriting styles,
but with an organic feel that only musicians with an acute sensitivity to each
other can achieve.
"when we were learning the new songs for become you, at first we weren't even
thinking about drums or accompaniment - we just worked real hard on our guitar
parts and harmonies so that the songs stood on their own," says saliers. "but
when we invited the band to come in, we got so inspired that we ended up using
their parts."
"a lot of it was cut live, with all of us set up in the room, and the purity of
the songs really comes through."
their last epic release, 1999's come on now social, was a more high-profile,
genre-jumping project, recorded partially in london with a new co-producer,
john reynolds, and such guests as joan osborne, sheryl crow and natacha atlas.
but even before its release, saliers and ray were mulling over the idea of an
acoustic-based recording - waiting for the right batch of songs and the right
circumstances to pull it off.
become you, which was recorded in their hometown of atlanta, georgia, finally
gives them a chance to bring it all back home. settling into one studio meant
they could go to their own houses each night, spend time with family and
friends, and reflect on the experiences that inspired some of these tunes. and
it made it easier for old colleagues such as michelle malone to drop by and add
her distinctive backing vocals to some of the tracks.
the resulting unaffected performances are complimented by the deft touch of
peter collins, producer of indigo girls' platinum album, rites of passage in
1992 and the grammy-nominated swamp ophelia in 1994. the crystalline mix is by
bob clearmountain, who's worked with everyone from bruce springsteen and the
who to shelby lynn and rufus wainwright.
saliers credit collins with offering "a vision for the songs that we didn't
have." from his suggestions came the hushed latin vibe of "you've got to show"
with a stan getz-inspired sax solo by dan higgins, and carol isaacs' accordion
motif on the title song. ray notes that much of the credit for the
exceptionally clear and balanced sound should go to engineer glenn matullo: "i
think he's the best i've ever worked with at recording vocals and acoustic
instruments."
the twelve songs on become you are evenly divided between emily and amy
compositions. ray wrote the first single, "moment of forgiveness," in a
ten-minute, backstage rush, thinking about what it takes for two people to come
together after a long estrangement and then setting the lyrics to a simple,
straightforward melody. when isaacs' came up with her keyboard hook in the
studio, that's when ray felt the track solidify. "that's really the song," she
says. "it's less about what i'm saying and more about recording in a soul
tradition or carole king tradition with this riff."
"nuevas seņoritas," her evocative ballad that closes the album, is the oldest
song here - inspired by a 1997 trip to chiapas, mexico. "it was written in
honor of the women who fight for change with the zapatistas," ray says. "i just
started writing some stuff down in my journal, then came back and wrote the
song later."
"become you," the title track, builds its unforgettable chorus on a subtle
metaphor - ray's struggle to reconcile and hang onto her southern identity in a
region still haunted by racism. "i tried to personalize these ideas, to portray
differences with my neighbors in my own rural area," she says. "a one-to-one
relationship is a microcosm of these bigger social relations. to me, it's all
about how you come to understand another person, how you can respect their
humanity even when you think their position is deplorable."
in 2001, while amy toured behind her solo album stag, emily enjoyed some time
off. "i had a good breathing period to collect my thoughts," she notes. "my new
songs like 'deconstruction,' 'collecting you' and 'our deliverance' are
reflective. they capture an evolution in my approach to life - they're the
songs of me, a 38-year-old rather than a 25-year-old. this is really the first
time i felt this good about a bunch of new songs without hearing it from
someone else."
"hope alone," which features a shimmering string arrangement by jerry hey, was
co-written by saliers with annie roboff. the two met during the indigos' trip
to cuba in 1999 and their collaboration is only the second co-written song to
ever appear on an indigos album.
whether it's staged at a campus coffeehouse or a sold-out madison square
garden, each indigo girls' show conveys their passion for fresh musical ideas,
their respect for their audience and each other, their commitment to peace and
social justice, and especially their unflagging enthusiasm for live
performance.
"we toured for a month in august 2001 - just the two of us - and i had as much
fun as i've had playing any shows in our whole career," says saliers. "we're
really pleased with become you. it will be a joy to play these songs for
people."
when they released their independent debut album, strange fire, in 1987, the
indigos were part of a new breed of singer-songwriters and independent
folk-rock artists, many of whom have subsequently dropped off the radar screen.
but more importantly, just as many rising artists have since found their voice,
inspired in part by the indigos' ongoing example.
ray credits part of their longevity to their fans, who are as far from fickle
they could be - sharing songs with each other, learning to sing and play the
tunes themselves, and driving miles to catch another show.
but that's only half the equation. become you is proof again that emily saliers
and amy ray invest their songs with lasting appeal by being true to what
inspires them. and in so doing, they've created music that is authentic enough
to avoid artifice, smart enough to grow with us and trusting enough to appeal
to our best selves.

barb -
if you are going to boot - analog is still awesome (i acyually use a analog
setup unless i can go to a show where security isnt rabid, or it is allowed)
stay away from the "mini" cassettes - they really lack the sonic range for
a show. maybe i am misintrepreting this - a walkman type recorder works
best and you can get a descent mono one for like $30 bucks - stereo for
under $100. other folks can give you brand names - i would say aiwa is
grerat but i have had horrid luck until my friend gave me theirs as they
thought it was close to dying - that was like 2 years ago.
and you dont need a computer - i'm sure with a good enough boot people will
be willing to burn it to disc for you...(and if digital club network does
webcast that show - maybe a compliation of your tape and the webcast will
be awesome!

yeah....if it turns out this time maybe. last time i booted was on a
regular walkman-sized
mono cassette recorder, (which could have been confiscated had the
guards at first avenue not been so lenient because of the size i fear i
got caught.)
the recording in general, was lousy .....it buzzed everytime the band
got going....it was so bad you couldn't hear th music. but when amy
talked .....that sounded great....so i figure
i must have been too close to the speakers, (i was in the third row.
what do you booters out there think? mike? anybody?
considering it's first avenue, i might try doing it from the balcony
where there's tables so a friend of mine could keep a watch on it so i
can be on the main floor singing, dancing, and screaming with everyone
else.
anyways. if i just use my mono cassette recorder mentioned above, do
you really think i could get a stereo quality recording. get it cleaned
up so it sounds like the good stereo boots ya sometimes get on this
list?
(i'm a perfectionist.)
thanks for all your input.

did it have the microphone built-in to the recorder,

designed for taking notes in class, not recording
loud shows.

it sounds like your recorder was overwhelmed by the loud music,
which causes the distortion you described.
>i must have been too close to the speakers, (i was in the third row.

i'd agree, you were too close, especially for that recorder.

if your recorder is "mono", you can't get a "stereo" recording,
and chances are good that your recorder is not designed for
anything with much volume... like a live show.
>(i'm a perfectionist.)
try the sony wm-sr1... it's an inexpensive *stereo* analog
tape recorder, and it does a very good job with live shows.

i'm a bit late in responding to this one but as a die hard politically
incorrect fan i had to chime in. i agree that putting amy or emily on the
show would be perfect when he brings up issues related to glbt causes. i
could totally see amy on there with her strong opinions about certain
issues. however, i don't think having her on would generate the result
desired. in fact i doubt amy would agree with having a gay tv network as
was being discussed on his show. i don't recall the whole panel from that
evening's show but it would have been a good idea to have someone gay on
there to give an opinion. however, in bill's defense, i would say he is
hardly homophobic. if anything he is honest and i respect that a lot more
than those who just agree with every gay cause that comes out on a whim (not
implying that the above writer thinks this way). bill maher is very gay
friendly. he put rupaul and homophobic rev lou sheldon on the same show
which made for a great dialogue. he had an openly gay girl in high school
on a show with all high school kids. he opened a show once with an actual
gay male commitment ceremony. and he has always stuck up for gays when the
right wingers attack stating they should be able to live as they please.
true he probably won't be marching in any pride parades but i feel he is
honest and fair all the way around as far as gays go. barraging his website
with emails when he just gave his opinion seems a bit extreme. if anything
we should thank him for keeping the issue so public and generating
discussion about it. that's more than jay leno or regis and kelly lee would
do. agreed that when discussing such a topic having a gay person on the
panel would be best, but be careful about jumping to conclusions about a
person being homophobic based on one honest opinion. i would be very
curious to hear if amy or emily would be supportive of such a "gay network".
i'll just have to ask them next time we do lunch...my 5cents...greg

best equipment that is small enough to sneak in a mini disc recorder with a good stereo mic (sony, mini disco etc.) <br />
you can still get a good recording with a tape but you will not get a high quality boot without some kind of stereo mic, either built in or external <br />
a good mini disc system with mic can be be found if you poke around the web and sales at best buy for around $250 <br />

i haven't booted at first ave, but a friend of mine did. he had decent equipment and got a pretty ok boot. for those of you with the sst from first ave, what do you think? the main problem is going to be dealing with all of the people and keeping the microphone away from them. i believe that he got pretty good sound in the middle of the floor about 1/2 way back to the sound board. if you're too close you're going to get distortion and if you're upstairs you're not going to get sound from both sides of the room and from my experiences at first ave the sound upstairs pretty much sucks.
you might also want to make sure that they're not checking bags (and packs) at first ave. i know that they do at some of the other mpls venues like the quest.

that same vendor also has one slim's ticket for sale for $175. (so i guess
2 for $300 is a 'deal'?).
you can't report it, but you can leave negative feedback on that seller's
profile. that way, any potential bidders can read all about what an evil
price gouger the vendor is, and may be deterred from buying from them. hop
to it and leave your comments.
oh. and you can also grin smugly at the fact that as of this morning, no
bids have yet been made.

howdy guys,
well, i got in contact with the orpheum theater in
madison, wi, where the girls are scheduled to play on
the 20 march, and i find that the orpheum has not had
anyone call them to book this date, and had no
knowledge that it was going on in the first place. so
now i'm left wondering what to do, or if the date will
remain or if they are even actually coming to wi. if
anyone has any addresses to someone involved in
booking or tour information in general involved with
the girls, would you mind sending it to me offlist,
i'd like to get to the bottom of this! thanks *very*
much, peace and love!

hi all, how's it goin'? well, as you have heard you have to actually go to
nashville to buy tickets beforehand and that isn't gonna happen for these 3
fans, so if anyone would be willing to get joey k, me and my husband tickets
(they are $20 in advance, purchase at 3rd and lindsley only, beginning
wednesday, january 30 at 10:00 a.m. cash only) i would be forever in debt
to you. i will also make it a worthy deed by throwing in a few cool ig
items and boots. if anyone can help, please email me privately.
thanks!!!

you can only leave feedback if you complete a transaction with the person.
so is handing them $175 or $300 worth so much to you to be able to leave neg
feedback?

don't call the club............. we had the same idea about getting a group
of tickets together and asking them to hold them for out of towners. it
won't work. someone in my group did call, and they were exceptionally rude
to her. she was told they only care about the people who live in town that
will support the radio station, and that they know it'll sell out, so they're
not worried about getting rid of the tickets, and basically they just don't
care. and everything in that previous sentence was actually said, with a
bit of hostility thrown in, so i'd think twice, three times, and then again
before calling. and this was the general manager saying these things.
i think they've been hounded for some time now about the tickets and if you
keep calling them, they're not going to get any nicer. they honestly don't
care.
just a bit of friendly advice..........
=)
