chickenman with: - spectacular emily solo; she made the guitar wail - then bitterroot - then chickenman
our deliverance

i jotted down the songs as they played them.
tracy or jeni mentioned emily's word tangling on virginia woolf. she sang "...the batches were
hattened..." and then she paused, and then she burst out laughing and backed away from the mike. the
crowd joined the laughter. emily stepped back to the mike, explained what she had done and that she
had never done that before. after they finished the song, emily commented "fun with phonics!". then,
as an introduction to the next song amy commented, "here comes another song that has potential for
screw up". she played become you on guitar and _harmonica_. amy said she's learning to play and
figures she'll have it down in another month.
they played a great show. i enjoyed hearing both the cd (the "jazzed up" versions of the new songs)
and the live performance (the "stripped down" versions of the new songs). i thought they did some
interesting things with a few of the songs on the cd (some of the songs on the cd _really_ surprised
me after listening to recent boots).

just heard something on the kfog net broadcast : apparently they're =
looking for people to vote for their 20 top favourite albums : and =
they'll put all the names of people who fill in the poll into a draw to =
win a trip to mexico. anyway, none of the albums by the girls are =

hello, everyone,
i apologize for another cross-post. just wanted to report in with my
"dispatch" from the great backyard bird count. i realize not everyone is into
nature, but for those who are, this weekend is a great way to get totally in
touch. from now through monday, people across the united states (world,
maybe) are asked to spend a bit of their time to count the ornithological
visitors to their back yards, and report the information at www.audubon.org <http://www.audubon.org/>
or www.birdsource.org <http://www.birdsource.org/>. scientists are able to extrapolate the data from your
time and place and determine whether the myriad bird species are showing
significant population changes and, from there, can work on determining the
causes.
trust me on this, if you try this, you will realize how much "company"
you really have in this world.
deb (who thinks that even the ubiquitous mourning dove deserves to stand up
and be counted!)

bush inherited this problem, as did clinton - who apparently did nothing but
ignore it because its an issue that will displease someone as the waste has
to go somewhere. its convienent to say its a bad thing and shouldn't be sent
to nevada but i don't see what he suggested as a solution.
i checked the websites that were posted and its interesting that i didn't
see any recommendations for an alternative location.
the reality is, this shit exists. it's a by product of nuclear plants. it
will always exist unless these plants are shut down permanently. that is a
separate issue that i won't get into here. so, where do you suppose we
should store this stuff? its gotta go somewhere, right? your backyard or my
backyard is out and so is everyone else's in the country so that leaves us
with basically no options except the "middle of nowhere" option.
it also has to be transported somewhere. there is too much of it and its
gotta be moved. please someone, post a viable solution and i'll be the first
one writing to bush to suggest it. and don't tell me that there shouldn't be
any in the first place because its way too late for that. we have to deal
with the current and future reality that is does and will continue too
exist.
dpm.

it was a great show. they were very spirited and funny and i would say it
would be in the top five of the 14 shows i've seen (because of the venue
size, mostly) were it not for the disappointing audience...drunk and violent
people standing on one side of me, self-conscious show-offs on the other. at
one point i felt embarrassed for a person who, during the intro to she's
saving me interrupted with the requisite outbursts "show us your tat!" and
"we love you, sully!" seriously - my eyes rolled back in my head so often at
the antics of this crowd that i thought my grandmother's prediction of them
sticking there might come true. they did an apparently spontaneous q&a
session and someone asked about the green room reference in yield and amy
avoided the subject in a really cute way. then someone in the audience
loudly speculated that it was the green room of creed (and i really don't
know if the person meant it as a joke or not) and amy cracked up and said,
"is it creed? is it pearl jam?" other questions like asking amy what brand
of jeans she wore and whether derrida inspired deconstruction made me wonder
whether the audience was projecting its pretentiousness onto them. yucky.
this happened when amy ray came to slim's last year too. i think i realized
that i prefer seeing them in larger venues where the idiocy of the audience
is more likely to be diffused.

it was a great show. they were very spirited and funny and i would say it would be in the top five of the 14 shows i've seen (because of the venue size, mostly) were it not for the disappointing audience...drunk and violent people standing on one side of me, self-conscious show-offs on the other. at one point i felt embarrassed for a person who, during the intro to she's saving me interrupted with the requisite outbursts "show us your tat!" and "we love you, sully!" seriously - my eyes rolled back in my head so often at the antics of this crowd that i thought my grandmother's prediction of them sticking there might come true. they did an apparently spontaneous q&a session and someone asked about the green room reference in yield and amy avoided the subject in a really cute way. then someone in the audience loudly speculated that it was the green room of creed (and i really don't know if the person meant it as a joke or not) and amy cracked up and said, "is it creed? is it pearl jam?" other questions like asking amy what brand of jeans she wore and whether derrida inspired deconstruction made me wonder whether the audience was projecting its pretentiousness onto them. yucky. this happened when amy ray came to slim's last year too. i think i realized that i prefer seeing them in larger venues where the idiocy of the audience is more likely to be diffused.

sad, indeed! but, this film wasnt the bruce willis film. that was next on his calendar. and news reports indicate he w=
asnt filming at the time of the accident; his work on the movie was done. details about just how far he fell have been in=
consistent so it may not quite have been 6 stories. not sure. (just clarifying) the accident occurred on feb 6. he died=
on the 15th. he also had three young sons.
still feels surreal to me.

wow...i totally agree about the slims show, however i do have to say that
emily's voice really shined in this particular show, it appears as if she was
sad for a bit, but is growing through her music again. i was really
impressed, but i definitely agree that after having paid a lot of money, not
knowing that it was a kfog special show, that made me mad because i did not
know where or when to order them, so from a bid online i paid way over price
for the croud that was a bit obnoxious when i think the ig's were trying to

the problem with the middle of nowhere, as you put it, is all the nowheres

hey all,
i had the privelege of seeing votv last night, here in st. louis. they were
incredible. my only complaint is that the show was way way too short. rose
was a riot the entire time. she started with saying that there are two
places that she gets drunks at when she plays them and one is blueberry hill
in st. louis. she definitely had a few and was totally relaxed and cracking
jokes and being silly the whole time and erin kept saying in a
silly/sarcastic manner "oh and please take us seriously" because rose was
being so goofy. the whole experience was awesome. i can truly say it was
the best show (aside from ig) that i have ever seen in st. louis. i sure
hope they come back.

don't read this imagining a mean or angry tone, but just a curious,
questioning one. what was wrong with the spontaneous q&a session? some of
the questions sounded pretty interesting to me. i would like to know where
the green room reference came from. i would especially like to know if
deconstruction of love was inspired by derrida, since he's primarily the pet
of the litcrits, and we know about emily's major in, and extensive writing
from, literature. i thought it was interesting when they volunteered from
the stage back on the cons tour that they were reading harry potter, and it
would be no less interesting to me to hear what they're reading now.
i've been guilty in the past of calling something "pretentious" or
"childish" or the like, when on later reflection i realized i just wasn't
interested in it. could a touch of that be at work here?
curious.

its in the middle of the little five points area, check out their
website www.variety-playhouse.com <http://www.variety-playhouse.com/>, it will give you all of the info. its
maybe 5 miles from the cnn center. thats a guess. its a good venue, a
converted movie/playhouse. certainly will not be in any way as cozy as
echo would have been, its probably 8 times as big. hope this helps. see
you there -

if you have tivo and music choice (i don't think you have to have directv
as i do), you should be able to find the hour-long interview by searching
for keyword "indigo girls". i just have my tivo set up to auto-record
anything matching keyword "indigo girls," to make sure i don't miss any
appearances.
according to my listings, the next scheduled airing on directv is at
midnight, 2/21, on shwcse1 (channel 802).
(fyi, my search also turned up the vh-1 "before they were rock stars" with
ig, which airs at 6:30 on 2/21.

i meant it will keep growing year after year and thus this issue of storage
will always be with us as we'll have to find places for the newly created
waste. but of course, it will continue to exist.

haha. that's intelligent. this is just another reason to bash bush, right?
he's in office, its gotta be his fault, right? he created all this shit,
right? he invented nuclear plants, right? this is how stupid your argument
is. haha. oh wait...i got it, its a joke!
i know 95% of the people on this list agree with you and hate bush and its
really humorous to watch it all, but the fact is, you can't come up with a
viable solution because there isn't one. no matter where it goes, someone is
going to be pissed. and its really "noble" to be on the side of the indians
on this one. we all wish we could be on that side, myself included but once
again you fail to come up with an alternative and until you do, i think the
one in hand is as good as it gets.

at the etown taping, amy and emily advocate shutting down all the nuclear
power plants as well as protesting the storage at yucca mtn. other
speakers during the taping echoed this sentiment and called for the use of
natural sources of energy.

so, since no matter where we store the waste, someone is going to be
pissed, we may as well do as we always do and force it on the indians?
that is the easiest answer since indians are the most politically
marginalized of all groups, but geez, haven't we done enough to them?
i don't see how this is "as good as it gets."

hey folks...haven't posted here in ages, i don't think...i just wanted to
make sure that the michelle malone fans on the list know that she is touring
with her band right now...i've never seen her with anything more than bass
backup, so i'm excited.
i know she's hitting philly, northern virginia, nyc and boston, as well as
baltimore.
she's playing in baltimore this wednesday, with a band called
modest-proposal (<http://www.modest-proposal.net/>) and my own band. it should
be a cool show. it's at paloma's, 15 w. eager st. in mt. vernon, 9 pm. $7
over 21, $10 under 21. partly self-promotional, but i'm just trying to make
sure there is a good turnout for her - it's expensive to keep a band on the
road.

>someone is going to be pissed.
why piss someone off by knowingly and directly disrespecting and
trivializing their religion and culture? am i missing something? i know
certain "types" of people aren't highly valued (just look historically and
presently at the living conditions of most of the native american tribes,
or look at the living conditions of the poor, or look at the schools in
inner city poor neighborhoods . . . shall i go on?) but since when are
people relegated to secondary status? (just a rhetorical question, i'm not
naive enough to think that people actually matter and come first in this
society) this society sucks. i don't know where the waste will end up,
but don't marginalize people. where are our prioirties? how did it happen
that people are not valued?
i don't know where to put the waste - i guess one could look at it this
way "what does it matter where we put it? it will kill us all in the long
run" which is probably true, but while we are here alive, let's respect
people and the things they value and hold sacred.

if it's the lesser evil, i say "we (meaning white society) invented it,
than let's take full responsibility and put it on our land"
it's fair. we need to stop dumping our shit onto
others so we can be accountable for it enough to quit making the stuff.
if it takes putting garbage on our own land there may be more incentive
fo us to start using other alternatives, and there would be no more
basis for people to pass it off as an "it 's not my issue" thing the
they do now.

i do not want to start a flame war.
i, however, was the one who asked the derrida question. and no, i did not ask it to be pretentious. i asked it because i wanted to know. emily was an english major. i thought that the song could have possibly been inspired by derrida. since i recently studied derrida in my program, i wanted to know if emily had anything to say. in other words, i wanted to learn from emily.
i was not asking that question to be pretentious. after the show, a lot of people came up to me and told me that they were wondering the same thing. your projections of my motives were way off.
(in a bad mood already...)

hey, no worries. i was in a really bad mood when i posted back... at a (this
time, free) computer at the airport after saying goodbye to my boyfriend.
i thought that the santa cruz show was better than the slim's one. probably
because it was longer. :) acoustic faye tucker kicked so much ass!
so glad i went to both shows... not so glad to be back.

so, here goes nothing since i've been too antisocial to write reviews for the
past couple years. i had lots o' fun tonight and i have one of the school
librarians to thank for being my chauffeur. how great is that? we got there at
4 and thank goodness so cal fans really do seem to be pretty unmotivated
because it gave me a decent spot in line. (best comment from person who asked
why we were in line: some big black guy all in leather with really long hair
insisted he had "partied" with indigo girls at the clinton inaugural ball. he
seemed convincing enough. quite a character.) unfortunately, some of that
infamous group of 40 were right in front of me so my spot in line got further
back. it also slipped further back once we were inside waiting to get in to
the stage area. the fun of waiting was accented by the woman next to me
complaining that is was standing room only (duh, it's the freakin' knitting
factory), it was hot, she was surrounded by "smelly" people, we had to wait
too long, insulting sulli in general (a really fast way to get on my bad side
cuz she rocks), etc. the woman in front of me was talking about me and my
friend and how it was so "ironic" that we were knitting in front of the
knitting factory. argh, could someone please give the woman a dictionary?
listening to the cd was nice but most people just talked over it like
background music. i am so much in love with yield even more than before. i am
not so in love with the arrangement for become you even though i like the song
live. i'm still needing pretty much all of emily's songs to grow on me. at
some point sulli hucked out a bunch of ig coasters and i got one. that was
cool, but random. sulli managed to peg a few people in the eye. pretty cute
(i'm sure not for anyone who got pegged, but sulli's look of uh-oh was
adorable). so finally the happy day of amy and emily starting their set. amy
had on this tasty blue lace-up shirt that offered quite a view of the tattoo.
i'm too lazy to check back on exactly what was played and in what order. there
was gone again, closer to fine, become you, deconstruction of love, kid fears,
get out the map, power of two, yield, she's saving me, galileo, shame on you,
deliverance. anything else? i can't remember. i hope i got that right. amy
told an amusing story about the rural emergency room. someone else can share
it. okay, i need to think about sleep now. toodles.

the 2/18 show at the knitting factory on hollywood blvd. was another fun indigo girls show for me but it was not without it's problems.
this is the first time i've been to the knitting factory since they moved from schrader st. to hollywood blvd. the new venue looks nice and feels intimate.
anyway, they let us in and we are standing around and, without any sort of announcement, they start playing the new album. it took me a few notes to realize this had happened, and there was so much chit-chat going on, i had a very hard time hearing most of the lyrics. i don't really blame the other concertgoers because again, they probably didn't know the album was playing for a while. an announcement would have been nice!
after the album ended, we must have waited between 30-45 minutes for amy and emily to come out. i got the feeling something was wrong. i don't know if it was backstage problem or a sound problem or what, but we waited forever. finally, we see sulli plug in a guitar and a mandolin, and stand there waiting to hand them over. sure enough, amy and emily come out and take the instruments.
amy, dressed in a dark button down shirt and dark blue jeans launches into the first song and breaks a mandolin string! sulli came to the rescue and handed over a fresh mandolin.
emily, dressed in dark blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a blue button down shirt with white trim left unbuttoned looks to me like she has lost some weight since the tour last year to introduce the new material.
set list:
gone again
closer to fine
become you
deconstruction
shame on you
get out the map
kid fears
she's saving me
yield
power of two
galileo
moment of forgiveness (my favorite amy song on the new album so far)
our deliverance
the l.a. promoters always warn amy and emily that l.a. fans have seen everyone so that they should not be surprised if the audience is cold toward them. it amazes me how anyone can say that to indigo girls! the crowd was yelling and screaming and singing along. a+e liked us so much, they canceled the break they were going to take after galileo and played straight through!!
that was a nice moment, another nice moment was when amy remarked how intimate the venue was and asked if there were any questions. somebody shouted something i could not hear to which amy replied "we can't do that." then she said "wait a second.", she walked over to a fan, took one of the ig coasters that sulli threw to the crowd before the show, grabbed it, autographed it, gave it to emily to sign, then gave it back to the impressed fan. we cheered when a+e signed it by the way.
amy then said to the fan, "now i've got a job for you." amy motioned for the fan to come onstage, which the excited fan did quickly (wouldn't you?); amy handed her an instant camera and said "take our picture." amy then put her arm around emily and they posed. the excited fan snapped a photo. amy thanked her and took the picture and camera back and emily said "that's for our web site y,all."
another problem was that when emily played her first slow song, deconstruction, some very loud fan started screaming and yelling when everyone else was trying to listen. i was embarrassed to be standing so close to the person when that happened. it's one thing to scream during "closer to fine" but there are times it is best to be quiet. oh well, i guess that is what happens when the venue has a full bar, people use it!
the los angeles times ran a blurb announcing the show and described a+e as the "dashing folk duo." after last night, i'd say that was accurate!

so what is proper etiquette? if we are in a bar setting and the cd starts
playing, are we really expected to be silent and not talk? what is the
expectation? i can see being quiet during a live performance, but during
this too? i'm asking because i don't want to do the wrong thing and incur
the wrath of crazed ig fans - wouldn't want to get on their bad side :)
i can see the die hard fans being quiet, but not the casual fan who wants
to relax mix having a good time and socializing and drinking.
and refresh my memory - my understanding is the cd plays in full first,
then they come out and play? is that right?
elaine (who's probably going to talk and whisper through the cd portion of
the show because dammit, i feel feisty and defiant! lol)

just a quick note about the show last night... the girls seemed in very good
moods, lots of smiling and laughing :) amy looked gorgeous :) the sound in
there was amazing too - you could hear all the words perfectly. everyone was
pretty noisy during the cd portion but i still enjoyed listening to the new
songs. one funny part - amy said the place was so intimate she felt like they
should take some questions and asked if anyone had any questions. a girl
close to the front said "i have one - can you sign my coaster??" (lots of ig
coasters floating around) so amy said "no no we can't do that" and the girl
made an "awww" sound so amy said "ok" and went up to the girl and signed her
coaster and then brought it over to emily and had emily sign too. then amy
pulled out a polaroid camera and had the girl come up on stage and take a pic
of a&e together. :) later amy told a story about having the stomach flu
recently and she went in to the emergency room at the rural hospital near her
house and they misdiagnosed her and did all these tests on her. finally they
gave her some drugs - "they're even too strong for me" and said the pill was
a mixture of (something) and demerol. emily said "what are they called?"
amy: "whammy" amy said she was driving home - "i wasn't driving, my
girlfriend was driving" and she kept having hallucinations of deer in the
road. it was pretty funny :)
anyway, fairly well-behaved crowd. the first couple songs were a bit rowdy
but everyone calmed down after that. there was actually quiet enough to hear
the last guitar parts of some of the songs :) also a celebrity sighting -
sara gilbert was there. the setlist from what i can remember was something
like this:
gone again (amy broke a string right off the bat and had to switch mandolins
during the song)
closer to fine
become you
deconstruction
shame on you
get out the map
kid fears
she's saving me
yield
power of two
galileo
encore (sort of... they stayed out and clapped and then said, ok we'll do two
more songs :)
moment of forgiveness
our deliverance (which emily said was a song about peace and that when they
do those polls that say 88% of the country is happy with the way the
administration is handling things... well i'm in the other 12% y'all)
anyway, more to come later on the bootleg :)

just a quick note about the show last night... the girls seemed in very good moods, lots of smiling and laughing :) amy looked gorgeous :) the sound in there was amazing too - you could hear all the words perfectly. everyone was pretty noisy during the cd portion but i still enjoyed listening to the new songs. one funny part - amy said the place was so intimate she felt like they should take some questions and asked if anyone had any questions. a girl close to the front said "i have one - can you sign my coaster??" (lots of ig coasters floating around) so amy said "no no we can't do that" and the girl made an "awww" sound so amy said "ok" and went up to the girl and signed her coaster and then brought it over to emily and had emily sign too. then amy pulled out a polaroid camera and had the girl come up on stage and take a pic of a&e together. :) later amy told a story about having the stomach flu recently and she went in to the emergency room at the rural hospital near her house and they misdiagnosed her and did all these tests on her. finally they gave her some drugs - "they're even too strong for me" and said the pill was a mixture of (something) and demerol. emily said "what are they called?" amy: "whammy" amy said she was driving home - "i wasn't driving, my girlfriend was driving" and she kept having hallucinations of deer in the road. it was pretty funny :)

anyway, fairly well-behaved crowd. the first couple songs were a bit rowdy but everyone calmed down after that. there was actually quiet enough to hear the last guitar parts of some of the songs :) also a celebrity sighting - sara gilbert was there. the setlist from what i can remember was something like this:
gone again (amy broke a string right off the bat and had to switch mandolins during the song)
closer to fine
become you
deconstruction
shame on you
get out the map
kid fears
she's saving me
yield
power of two
galileo
encore (sort of... they stayed out and clapped and then said, ok we'll do two more songs :)
moment of forgiveness
our deliverance (which emily said was a song about peace and that when they do those polls that say 88% of the country is happy with the way the administration is handling things... well i'm in the other 12% y'all)

anyway, more to come later on the bootleg :)

i was just wondering how many people a venue like the knitting factory
holds? curious because i wonder if the show i get to go to will be smaller
or bigger. either way it will be awesome, but i was just wondering.
okay, i am so excited to go to the concert after hearing these reviews.

playing, are we really expected to be silent and not talk?>>
i dunno - what's the point of them playing it if you're not supposed to
listen?
having said that, if they really wanted you to 'listen' listen, they'd be
playing it loud.
<<and refresh my memory - my understanding is the cd plays in full first,
then they come out and play? is that right?>>
that appears to be the general idea...

except for santa cruz, the cd played at all the venues prior to the shows.
it was loud! so loud that it was distorted in most cases and actually the
knitting factory had the best sound quality for the cd play. people
socialized and discussed the new songs as they were playing and i thought
that was the way it was suppose to go. i realize listening tot the lyrics
may be important to some, but that detailed a listening is not going to
happen, nor is it meant to, during preview shows like these. however, i had
lots of people talking around me and we still heard the lyrics to most of the
songs, and it was part of the discussions we were having in many cases.

i'm very excited i get to see the girls on friday night. the venue is tiny
(holds 400). i have just a couple of questions i'm hoping someone can help
me with.
first of all, has anyone been to the gypsy tea room here in dallas? i
wasn't planning on taking off work and going and standing in line early.
my goal was to be there at 7. the doors open at 8. the place is only 2500
sq ft! any comments? suggestions?
also, have emily and amy been hanging out after the shows and signing
autographs, or are you guys just really persistant? i've never met ig, and
i am more than anxious to do so!
thanks in advance!

after the santa cruz show, i got to talk to emily and she signed an autograph
for me. it was the first time --since i first saw them at emory a long time
ago and had no idea that i was witnessing -- that i ever tried to meet them.
amy took a detour around the bus (though someone told us she had signed a
bunch of stuff earlier) and generally ignored us, but emily was beautiful and
sincere and gracious. a woman asked her what was the significance of the key
she wore around her neck and emily said, "it's a secret." anyway, here's the
setlist from santa cruz:
get out the map
three hits
collecting you
yield
mystery
faye tucker
least complicated
become you
hope alone (this song nearly made me cry)
gone again
philosophy of loss
johnny rottentale (with a cool intro i hadn't heard before - anyone know what
it was?*)
closer to fine
nuevas senoritas
shame on you
galileo
moment of forgiveness
our deliverance
chickenman/bitterroot (second encore)
the crowd was phenomenal, i must say. met some really nice people in the
line, and one guy even offered to give me a boot. it was the second best show
i've ever seen - after the greek theatre in berkeley,ca 1997. michael
franti (of spearhead) warmed up the crowd - with the most spectacular example
of human percussion i have ever witnessed...he also told great stories about
the artist exchange in havana and how emily taught him his first chord - a g,
which he says "is featured in almost everything i play."
the intro to johnny rottentale went something like this: my dog he don't
bite/but he barks all night / my heart it don't break/but it sure does
ache....
oh yeah. amy wore flannel.

hey,
the paradise is a really small club, that does not usually frisk people when
they walk in, but given the state of the world they just may, but it
shouldn't stop you from bringing a camera! i like this venue very much, but
the sucky things about it are,
1.) if you get to the stage forget about going to the bar or the bathroom
2.)there is always obnoxious, loud, drunken "pda" lesbians at whatever show
you see there! yanni, could be playing there and you can bank on it! i am
already starting to get bummed out about seeing ga shows, we are traveling to
ny to see the girls at the bowery and going to the paradise, i understand
people will be excited about the show, but why get drunk, and act like a
jackass when most of the people are there to listen to the cd first and the
indigo girls second? i will never understand this logic (or lack there of) if
you feel like chatting and getting drunk go to a bar where everyone is there
for that same reason, not to a concert where people (most people) have come
to actually watch and listen to the featured performers. as the old highway
patrol bumper stickers wisely said "a little courtesy won't kill you"
peace & love,
janet

first off, does anyone know how to get aol 7.0 to send plain text?? i only
have 7.0 at work so i don't send the non-plain text e-mails too often but i
noticed the message i sent the other day had that weird double-message thing
going on.
anyway, quick note about anaheim... i got there pretty early and ended up in
the second row hanging out with some other cool fans (hi robin and lori!) and
some not-so-cool fans...
the show was really good and amy said that sulli and some of the crew made up
the set list so it had some old stuff on it and they had been practicing in
the dressing room for a few hours. john trudell was the opener and he was
actually better than i remembered (although i still think the backround music
detracts from what he's saying, since you can't hear him over the music...)
amy messed up the harmonica part during starkville and made a comment how
sometimes emily starts playing her solo and amy can just hang out off to the
side without having to do anything :)
so... the bootleg kind of sucks... there were three women behind me who
seemed to think that we all came there to hear them sing instead of amy and
emily. not only were they singing to every song except the new ones as loud
as possible, but one of them kept howling and woo-hooing during odd
moments... (it's one thing to sing along... it's entirely another to try to
drown out the people on the stage.) then there was the goofy guy next to us
who was clapping off-rhythm. so the bootleg is pretty pathetic at this point
- i couldn't even finish listening to it on the drive home because of the
singers... the knitting factory is great though. i will probably be ready to
do copies over the weekend if anyone is interested... just e-mail me
privately later in the week.
the setlist was something like this (18 songs total i think):
land of canaan
least complicated
become you
deconstruction
hammer and a nail
ozilline
starkville
hope alone
yield
she's saving me
the wood song
love will come to you
puching the needle too far
prince of darkness
chikenman/bitterroot
encore: moment of forgiveness & galileo
that's only 17 so i'm missing something...
anyway, it was good show despite the annoying people :p

this review ran in today's l.a. times. and we thought male critics were harsh:
the indigo girls blend emotion and activism
by natalie nichols
special to the times
february 20 2002
indigo girls first came to prominence during the late-'80s sensitive-chick movement (tracy chapman, suzanne vega, etc.), and they haven't changed their formula much. but, hey, if jewel can still be relevant in the pop world, then why not indigo girls?
basking in the fan love that partly explains its staying power, the folk-pop duo gave the faithful a taste of its forthcoming album and played a lot of old favorites during a sold-out show on monday at the knitting factory in hollywood.
"become you" (due march 12) eschews the broader sonic palette of 1999's "come on now social," returning to the all-acoustic approach that is a hallmark of amy ray and emily saliers' 21-year association. accordingly, the pair's hourlong set featured them playing acoustic guitar, harmonica and other stringed instruments, and harmonizing with that trademark blend of ray's shaggy-edged alto and saliers' sweet soprano. their best work still blends emotional introspection and an activist mind-set with agreeably jangling hooks. such new selections as the album's blues-folk title track offered self-affirmation, romantic pensiveness and personal reflection and bore the classic upbeat/downbeat contrast of saliers' and ray's respective personas.
the women scarcely had to encourage singing along on such older numbers as the jubilant "closer to fine" and the rollicking folk-popper "get out the map." if at times the lyrics were blandly pretentious, ray and saliers were so lively and down-to-earth that even nonbelievers would have had a hard time finding places where the set dragged.

just go here: http://www.indigogirls.com/tour.html

the preview shows are listed first (well, under the european shows), and the full length ones are listed last.

good question - now i'm thinking "which type of show are they doing for
boston?" i probably knew this - in fact, i know i knew this, but i have
the ability to retain information of a 2 year old and have long since
forgotten.
who knows what we will see in boston?
elaine

hey everyone, just a quick question: how does one find out what shows are
the preview of the new album shows or the full length show with the band
etc? i remember reading something the other day about there being two
different "tours" happening right now and i was wondering which i bought
tickets for in buffalo?
thanks for your help,
mary

i did not get tickets and i'm totally bummed. i never got the code from xrt.
i teach. i tried to get tickets at 10am by leaving my students with an
assignment for a few minutes. no such luck. if anyone can help me with two
(or even just one for little old me) tickets, i would be eternally grateful.

hi,
ok, word is that all chicago tickets sold out in under 3 minutes. (we may
have extras, but i will not know for a few weeks). since all 1,100 tickets
sold, there will be no sale to the public (whatever that means, this was a
pre-sale).
advice to those w/o tickets (to this or any show): show up at the veune.
seriously, people are always selling extras -- even at san francisco's slims
some people had extras. (and we got our santa cruz tickets at the last
minute). try www.craigslist.org <http://www.craigslist.org/> and click on the chicago (or whatever city
are looking for tickets for) link. i've gotten a lot of tickets at face
value through various city's craigslists.
good luck! i will keep my eyes out and post here (and on the bbs) if i see
or hear of any extras. i am not in chicago, though, so locals will probably
have better luck.
:-) karen

good advice, karen.
but show up early! at both the portland and seattle shows there were extra
tickets, though not enough for everyone who needed them! most of the folks
who showed up at least an hour-and-a-half before doors opened got tickets.

very true! but don't come too early (and expect to get tickets that early).
hahaha. not many people are selling tickets at 10am. :-) but remember,
there are always extras. people get sick at the last minute. people change
their minds... and since these are mostly paper tickets (unlike san
francisco and many at santa cruz), it will be easier to buy them.

i got a copy of the promo in the mail today (well yesterday - the family
member known as mom "forgot" that it came in...) thanks to the listee that
sent it - you are awesome!
i dunno about the jazzy you've got to show - it isnt horrible - it actually
is produced well. i think i like it live better - the summer band tour
shows will be interesting...
i loved hope alone - god - could that be on the first album.
nothing has hit me as hard as hearing rites the first time in a pizza
parlor on a walkman when i got like my first real $$ to spend on myself - i
went from said pizza parlor - to ticketmaster and got tickets to nff 92 -
alas the obsession was born. oh and my mom told me she was getting
remarried that day. it wasnt to hard to get the ok to go to newport. wow -
has it been a decade?

ok, our deliverance is really good - but was it written before 9/11? the
lines about the soliders just beg me to wonder - good song - shows how much
we have changed - it has a bit too much idealism - almost jingoism - but i
am being very picky. good song - i probably will go back to my leftie
tendencies - it just seems wierd with the war. or what ever
starkville - instantly a great song - sounds like something from stag -
much less produced than "become you" - i love it...
"she's saving me" - this should be a single on the album - i just realized
the title may be wierd for commericial radio - but i'm totally picturing
this elegantly filmed video on vh1 - i just want to screanm to the powers
that be - dude - this is the single!!!
neuva senoritas - wonderful ending...

indigo girls in finest voice at the grove
the duo shows its dual talent for songcraft and musicality in an 18-song acoustic set.

special to the register

the indigo girls made it look so easy throughout a rich and varied performance at the grove of anaheim on tuesday night.
performing for 90 minutes, amy ray and emily saliers used only the blending of their voices, six- and 12-string guitars, mandolin and harmonica to deliver 18 original songs from throughout their catalog.
their music is at once decidedly out of step with the tastes of modern-day commercial radio, and timeless.
like brothers neil and tim finn (crowded house, split enz), ray and saliers fuse well- sung harmonies, traditional songcraft and melodic choruses to support real-life stories about love, loss and survival.
many of the songs featured were off "become you," a dozen-track collection of new songs set for release march 12. based on the acoustic versions performed tuesday, those expecting any significant departure from the past will be disappointed. however, the good news is that their lyrical tales continue to deepen, offering a growing understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
"become you," penned by ray, thoughtfully examines her southern roots, torn between being proud of where she's from and the south's history of racism. on another new song, saliers' beautiful ballad "deconstruction," the women sang so perfectly together it was easy to overlook their guitar work, played with equal nuance and grace.
indeed, it's easy to overlook the skill of the indigo girls as multi-instrumentalists. "chickenman" featured saliers' blistering guitar solo, while ray played both guitar and harmonica on "starkville."
they closed with a celebratory "galileo," their enduring sound enhanced by a tuneful audience that needed no prompting to sing along.
in the opening set, santee sioux spoken-word performer john trudell, backed by a three-member band, delivered a raw and charged 30 minutes of original musical storytelling. featuring material off his forthcoming "bone days" (executive produced by actress angelina jolie and set for release march 5 on ray's daemon records), trudell highlighted the set with "hanging from the cross," using artful poetry to deliver a virtual history lesson on the clash between european and american indian cultures, set against a haunting musical backdrop of rock and blues.

this woman's reviews of indigo girls (not to mention anyone related to lilith fair) are consistently dismissive and unkind. this particular review is actually complimentary, if in a back-handed kind of way.
