hi,
i used to be on this list 5 years ago, but then the email volume got to
me and i had to sign off. i will spare you my detailed life history,
but i recently graduated from texas tech and moved to houston. so if
there are any cool people in houston, drop me a line. i knew tony fraps
back in 1997 (met him at the april 1997 - will rogers auditorium ft.
worth ig concert).
anyways, the point of my email is that i set up an ftp server to share
my mp3's with you. i made the mp3's by plugging a tape player into my
line-in plug and recording them to mp3 format. they kind of suck
because 1) they were originally on tape and 2) they were recorded to my
computer from tape and 3) they are just long mp3s. so, test this and
let me know if it works or if it times out or something. i am new to
trying this - i am sure someone thought of it already, so hope i am not
bugging people. warning: these are huge files to download - about 30
minute mp3's.
instructions
go to the start button --> run. --> cmd (brings up the command prompt)

okay, so let me know if it craps out or if it works. please don't
delete the files. if this works and you have some ig bootleg mp3's feel
free to put them to my computer. have a good day. if there are any sun
solaris whizzes out there, i would love to talk nerd-talk with you.

hey y'all,
well, after weeks of preparation and a lot of last minute butterflies on
my part, the votv show last night went off without a hitch. i tend to
run out of superlatives on occasions like these, but what a wonderful
night it was...
i arrived at nietzsche's at 5 pm and started setting my sound system up
on the front stage, a short time later votv arrived and began setting up
on the main stage in back. erin mckeown asked if i had a guitar amp that
she could use, so i offered her the use of my peavey transfex 208, and
after a little tweaking, she was able to get the sound that she wanted
from it...
all four women were delightful to work with, and sound check was a treat
to watch as they experimented with new material...
around 7:30, we started our portion of the show. i opened with three new
songs that i'd written recently, and then was followed by my friend
amanda amico, a popular local singer-songwriter, and tammy shannon,
another friend whose cd i produced last year...
at 9:15, the focus switched to the main stage, and boston
singer-songwriter mark erelli's opening set. erin joined him with some
tasteful lead guitar on one song, and beth amsel added harmony to another
as the house began to fill...
as he was finishing his set, my friend sandra, a wonderful poet from
portugal who is a grad student at ub - who had earlier given me the
surprise gift of an autographed 1200 curfews cd marked 'to tim' - told me
that ani difranco was in the house - it was really great the way people
just let her hang out and enjoy the show without bothering her - i did
thank her for coming out to the show and for the inspiration that her
artistic integrity provides for all of us...
votv put on a great show - the whole in this case is far greater than the
sum of it's parts - the harmonies were wonderful and the interactions
between the women were fun to watch - and erin mckeown is one helluva
guitarist...
rose polenzani was sporting a newly purchased epiphone single cutaway
semi-solid body electric that erin seemed to love to play. all four
women possess great voices, and the contrast in styles made for a very
interesting evening...
the crowd was extremely respectful, attentive, and appreciative - a
number of folks went out of their way to thank me for my efforts in
setting up the gig...
after votv concluded their encore set, we switched back to the front
stage for some of our traditional end of the night jamming. amanda amico
and i combined for a version of van morrison's moondance with great solos
from russian born guitarist alla ivanchikova and tg saxophonist kim
preston, then alla and i tore into all along the watchtower, before alla,
an fine emerging songwriter, surprised those who weren't already aware of
her talents with a strong set of edgy original material, and a couple of
collaborative efforts with kim and vocalist jae leblanc...
as the night drew to a close, i played a set of semi-obscure buddy holly
songs by request, and then launched into an impersonation of bob dylan
singing the who's substitute and the beatles' lady madonna. a couple of
young women requested happiness is a warm gun which i don't know (but my
friend amanda jarosz plays - she'll be at nietzsche's this sunday with
ronley teper from toronto and my other friends) - instead i played the
continuing story of bungalow bill, followed by rocky raccoon, which led
to a wonderful sequence of songs from that era. the young woman who had
made the request sang great harmony with me on almost everything i
played, including a hysterical version of little red riding hood - it was
2:30 am when i finally started to pack up...
i was hoping to entice erin mckeown to jam -- maybe next time...
this was another night i'll cherish as long as i draw breath...
peace,
tim

wow!! ya guys it was soooooo exciting... amy and emily were just
wonderful as always..
and they were alittle chatty tonight which is always nice!
i got there 90 minutes early, and froze my butt off because it was what
15 degrees and that windchill must have been below zero!! wooof was it
cold! but i got a good seat,
i was mid section right between amy and emily, about 20 feet away so if
the pictures turned out......i got some great shots.
everyone sang on all the songs..prompting the girls to tell us we're
"f______ good" to know the words to the new album songs so early!
amy comented on how cold it was, "i went jogging this morning with my
hands over my face! i'm a wimp!" and they were all smiles..
it was so different from sst '98 because it was all ig, (of course)
songs....and sst wasn't,
so it was nice to hear their stuff at first avenue....i did'n't realize
just how nice it would be...
and now for the songs...... this is not in order
1 shame on you
2 wood song
3 deconstruction
4 become you
5 yield
6 closer to fine
7 collecting you
8 our deliverance
9 she's saving me
10 kid fears
11 chickenman/bitteroot (i just loved this one....emily's guitar solo
was great..i think she had two in there. i just couldn't wait to hear
bitteroot live...and when it's thrown in with chickenman it's
wonderful!!!)
12 galileo
13 johnny rottentale
14 power of two
she's saving me was superb.....oh....and amy was whistlng on ctf and her
voice cracked....she stopped and started laughing, and blushed
too..cracked emily up.
i gave amy my "amy ray for president" bumper ( from when the list did
bumperstickers) after the show, and she laughed! she liked it!
well gotta go....best of all....no band!
peace

hi,
what an awesome night (posting from a net cafe in madison,so i cant't be long).
get this... i arrived at the venue at 9am. yes, i was the girl camping for a while. but it was freeeeezing. so the people who worked at the venue (and guitar tech michelle) kept bringing me coffee and tea.
finally at 1pm, someone who worked at the venue (first avenue) poked his head outside and told me to come inside. it was awesome!
i helped out around the venue a bit (it was fun as hell), got to see the stage being set up (by sulli and the crew), and... got to hear/see soundcheck from right on the floor!!! it was awesome! emily played leaving and part of love will come to you during soundcheck. amy did a small soc. :)
right before the doors opened, john (the venue dude) told me to stake out my place. front and center, baby!!! :)
see, being there at 9am paid off... got to wait inside, see soundcheck, and get an amazing spot.
i need to get back in line for the madison show (i am first again). the woman behind me and i are alternating (i just met her),and she needs to go get lunch.
come out to madison if you have tix... the line is growing.
:-)karen

now, here is my review of the concert last night...fucking awesome!! that's
all i have to say. but i will go into more detail anyway.
i left work at 2:00 and called karen (another listee) only to find out that
she is inside all nice and warm. the venue let her in early because of the
cold. my sister and her friend meet me and we drive on down to the venue.
just as we are walking up to the door i see someone who has to be karen so i
say "are you karen?" to which she tells me yeah, and that she will be
inside holding spots for us. so we don't have to wait in line out in the
cold. we went to a restaurant down the street and hung out for a while. we
only ended up standing in line for 40 minutes or so. not too bad. karen
calls me on my cell while we are out in line to assure me that we are front
row center. sure enough, that's where she is. and she told all the people
around here that we were going to be joining her, so no one was pissed when
we pushed our way up there. it was awesome!! karen is so sweet, it was
awesome to meet her!
here's the set list:
shame on you
woodsong
become you
deconstruction
devotion
get out the map
kid fears
closer to fine
yield
she's saving me
bitterroot chickenman
collecting you
johnny rottentale preceded by ???
galileo
moment of forgiveness
power of two
the show was great. highlights for me were woodsong ( that is my all-time
favorite ig song), kid fears, chickenman and power of two. it was so
excellent that they ended the show with pot instead of ctf or galileo like
usual. both of the girls looked amazing!! fashion report:
amy was wearing her shiny jeans, and the sleeveless shirt that she has on in
the promo photos. she was even wearing the same necklaces. she had black
boots on that looked to be docs or some variation thereof. emily was
wearing green checked pants, a black bra (visible because of), a sheer black
shirt and a button up black shirt over that i can't say that i noticed what
she had on for shoes.
amy was all smiles as was emily which was surprising for me. i haven't seen
her smile that much at a concert before. i loved it when she said "you guys
are fucking awesome!!!!" and then amy said that she wanted all of us to go
to madison because they need crowds like us. that was great. later on amy
commented on how it was so cool that we sang along to even the new songs.
she thought it was very quick for us to know the words and said she really
appreciated it. emily didn't want to leave the stage. during the encore i
saw her say to amy that she didn't want to stop playing. and then during
pot she again said to amy that she wanted to play one more song. but they
didn't. oh, it was funny during galileo when emily screwed up the words.
she sings the line, wrong, then looks at amy and goes "what was that??" it
was funny. the whole crowd cheered for that. it was just an amazing
concert!
after the show we waited out by the bus. emily went out the door and right
into the bus. she must have been cold. she waved, but that was it. i
really wanted to talk to emily about she's saving me, but i guess that will
have to wait. hopefully this summer.
amy did stop to talk to us and sign some things. she told my sister that
she loved her shirt and wanted one just like it. my sister thought that was
so awesome that amy remembered her. because inside she didn't have a coat
on but after the show she did so her shirt was no longer visible and amy
still commented on it. that was really cool. she gave my sister a hug!
how sweet!
that was that. then we went home and i crawled into bed. today all my
joints ache from the cold and just from standing so long with all this extra
weight i have in my tummy (the baby in case anyone didn't know i am
pregnant.) but it was so worth it and i would do it again in a second if i
could! i wish i could have drove to madison with karen today. i want to
see them again. i just pray that they don't schedule their summer dates for
july because i would cry. i haven't missed a mn ig concert yet. i wouldn't
want to start. ahhh, it was such a great night!!!

hi gang, it's been a while since i've been actively reading the list, but i'm back.
and omg it just occurred to me as i was searching the ig website for new tour info that i will be in edinburgh from 5/13 to 5/15... my first trip to europe in like 20 years. coincidence? i think not.
any way, i was wonderin of anyone from the list was familiar with the area... where's queens hall? how do i get tickets for something like that from the states? i'm staying at the queens hotel for 1 night and the "point" hotel for 2. what are they like? are they anywhere near the venue?
any info would be greatly appreciated... i must try to attend this show... it's fate.
peave, love, and all things indigo,
indigo jo

okay, turns out that southwesternbell assigned me a new ip address. i
have dhcp with my dsl (which gives me a new ip every time i reboot), but
i have a router between the dsl and my computer that is always on (i
thought that would make me not get a new ip address all of the time, but
i guess not). i am going to order a static ip address on monday - but
until i get one if you want to use ftp, i guess email me and i will give
you my current ip address. maybe when i get a static ip address i can
attach one of my url names to it.
this could be pretty cool if i get things set up and they aren't turtle
slow. (keep in mind this is my home pc) but people could send me
bootlegs and i could transfer them to mp3s and then share them.

woah! talk about post indigo blues...
i am back at my mom's in chicago now trying to decide if i should go back to
school (this is my last semester and then i am leaving u of i), or just head
back to san francisco. i have already ruled out mountain stage because sulli
told me that the girls were only going to play five songs. it is not worth
the loooong drive to west virginia.
last night's show was amazing. but let me back up. :)
on my way from minneapolis to madison on the freeway, i got my first speeding
ticket. uggg! to make matters worse, since i am from out of state, i had to
pay it on the spot. thank goodness the wisconsin highway patrol accepts
credit cards, or else i would be screwed. so whatever, i was kind of pissed.
it also made me later than expected for the show (10am instead of 9am). but
whatever. i was still first in line.
waiting in line yesterday was great... one of my best line experiences ever.
i met some really cool people, and got some yummy pasta at the noodle place
(sorry sheryl, i saw your e-mail too late). the weather didn't suck (not
compared to minnesota and chicago anyways), and there were no rudeass line
cutters (at least up front).
when the doors opened, i took off. woo hoo! front and center again! yes,
the stage was high, but i was able to see just fine. at one point during the
show, two people tried to stand in front of me (there was room between the
front row and the stage since the stage was so high). i just politely asked
them to move so that i could see, and they did.
mrs. fun opened. i won't say anything about that, because i am sure that
some of you here may like them... (sorry.)
the girls came out after a while looking great as usual. some highlights:
love will come to you (emily did it in soundcheck in minneapolis the day
before, but it sounded better with both amy and emily), reunion, ozilline...
they opened with least complicated and ended with chickenman/bitterroot. the
crowd was pretty good. the only qualms i had were that some people (right up
front) were talking throughout starkville and she's saving me. i really hope
emily and amy did not hear all of the chatter...
so you're probably wondering about the speeding ticket subject. well, see, i
made a poster for the girls two nights ago in some hotel in minneapolis. i
listed all of the shows that i attended on this tour, and a brief note about
each show. in line in madison, i decided to tape my speeding ticket (hell, i
already paid it, and there is no way i can go to court to fight it since
court is in northern wisconsin) to the poster. i managed to get the poster on
stage to give the girls (i had to jump since the stage was like 7 feet high).
amy looked at the pink speeding ticket and started laughing.
after the show, i stuck around to talk to amy and emily one last time until
the summer tour. while i was waiting, i talked to sulli. she was cracking
up about the speeding ticket, saying that amy thought it was hilarious. when
the girls finally came out, they both knew me as the speeding ticket girl
(and remembered me from the past shows on this tour). amy told me that she
was worried about me driving from minnesota to wisconsin through the night (i
told her in mn that i was driving to madison that night), and that she was
relieved to see me at the show. she and emily both thought that taping the
speeding ticket on the sign was funny. emily warned me not to speed again.
:) but the tour bus driver made me feel better by saying that he too has
gotten many speeding tickets (sulli seconded that).
anyway, so madison was a great last show of this tour for me. amy ray and
emily saliers have my speeding ticket. and i can not wait for the summer
tour.
later,
karen :-)

howdy ya'll,
i'll talk about the madison show in just a bit, but i
had to let barbara know that the bumper sticker you
gave amy? it's now hanging on the front side window
of their tour bus! late last night my girlfriend cass
and i went by the stage door after the concert and
waited by the bus for a moment and cass asked me if i
was sure if it was indeed *their* bus, and i could
only assume so until i looked at the passenger side
front window and saw "amy ray for president" and
pointed it out and said, "yeah, i'm sure." how
*cool*! good for you barbara!! peace and love!

all -
thanks to michael reynolds for helping me out with the dynamic ip issue,
my ftp service is back up.
this is a grassroots effort, so if you haven't had any luck so far, try
again - i think things are getting a little more stable.
i am running the service over dsl on my home pc - which is 700 mhz w/
256 mb ram. right now i have 11 gb of free space on my hard disk, so
that should be for now.
you can download and upload files to my pc. i might try to start

keep my computer on most of the time - i will have to occasionally
reboot, though (this computer is running microsoft). so if things don't
work, try back in about 10 - 20 minutes - if it is still down email me
because i might not be aware of it. i have revised the ftp instructions
below.
also, my aol im name is tchnrdr1 if you want to look for me online (you
can use their messenger for free - and i like it better than msn or
icq).

it is a big pain to try to do songs individually, so i just did one side

a cord that went from the white/red stereo plug to a headphone-looking
plug) into the line-in in my sound card. then i pushed "play" on the
tape deck and "record" in musicmatch jukebox, it is pretty manual, but
it works... in musicmatch you can set the recording source to line-in
and that is how i set it up.

that some celebrities wouldn't like a sticker like that...."what?" i
said,"why would a celebrity who's political not want their name on

women on the verge
a twist of fate creates voices on the verge
by toni ruberto
news staff
3/15/2002
call it a happy accident. or fate, if you will. it's the story of how
four talented solo musicians merged into the heavenly sounding voices on
the verge, a quartet that shines a ray of hope on a dismally cynical
music industry.
beth amsel, rochester native jess klein, erin mckeown and rose polenzani
were each making musical waves as solo folk artists when they were booked
into a showcase in the iron horse in northampton, mass., in 1998. the
original plan that each would play a 30-minute set was discarded once the
four women - all tenacious, open-minded and quite fearless with their
creativity - met.
"with our love of music, it was impossible for each of us to sit still
while the other did her song," amsel recalled last week on the telephone.
they chose, instead, to perform in a songwriters-in-the-round format
where they could share the stage and collaborate freely. one would start
a song and the others would jump in, adding harmonies and instrumentation
to expand the song's original vision.
audiences immediately warmed to the charming spontaneity of the
performances, harmonious voices and fresh song interpretations. they
wanted more. and so did the musicians - to a point. voices on the verge
would be a side project, not a band. they would not write together nor
look at this as a long-term idea.
"it was never our intention to write songs together. it was always more
of an eclectic ensemble of our individual pieces," amsel says over the
phone. "we each bring a fairly unique piece to the puzzle. because of
that, our audience has been diverse. instead of people responding to us
individually, they are responding to our dynamics as a group."
voices on the verge works well around their solo work, amsel says. she is
preparing to release a new solo cd after this tour, and the other women
are at various stages of working with new material as well. together,
their group dynamic allows them to be part of something bigger than
themselves, amsel says.
"we've all been able to grow as musicians throughout the process. the joy
of doing this work is that you take on a different role in your own music
and learn to do things that weren't your strong point and make something
that's so much bigger than you could do as an individual.
"the challenge is that you have to put your ego aside and understand that
you're working with three other artists that are just as strong as you
are. they have their own shining brilliance."
she easily talks about the talents of her musical mates with the same
genial spirit that fills the lengthy conversation, one that's punctuated
with strings of laughter. "erin is an extraordinary musician. she can
play any instrument she puts her hands on. she brings a level of
musicianship that is so fun to work with," amsel says. "rose is an
extraordinary lyricist. she is poetic and evocative. jess writes just a
fantastic melody, the type of music you continue to sing long after the
show is done. i'm first and foremost a singer and that ties it together."
a mutual appreciation for each other, along with a deep love of music,
helps them hold it all together. "there is a healthy dose of respect and
admiration. we listen very well to one another and we're fearless. we're
not afraid of trying things. we will either succeed or fail and the
results are exciting either way," amsel says.
audiences benefit from that excitement as the live shows take on a life
of their own. "you never know what you're gonna get," amsel says. "it's a
different show every night. there have been some people coming to a
string of shows and they've been getting a different show every night."
the audience response, one that's been overwhelmingly positive since that
first impromptu show, has been a guiding light for the musicians. "if
there hadn't been such a popular demand to continue, perhaps we wouldn't
have returned with the project," amsel says.
that demand continues. the current tour, which stops in nietzsche's on
wednesday night, is selling out in most cities, including anchorage,
alaska, and multiple dates in philadelphia. "it's been fantastic and
really extraordinary. i can't believe how well-received the show has
been," she says. "people are so thrilled to see four women working
together in such a capacity. there's really not anyone else doing this
type of project."
understanding the magic of its live shows, last year the quartet released
the 13-track "live in philadelphia," a beautiful portrait of its musical
lyricism and vocal poetry. rolling stone magazine called the disc a
"level forum that showcases the best of what these women have to offer
and lets hidden talents emerge. this is real grrrl power, baby." acoustic
guitar magazine praised its "silky harmonies and rootsy mix of tunes. . .
. though each stamps her storytelling with its own mark, this quartet is
a whole that is as great as the sum of its parts."
"we had talked about doing a studio record for about three seconds,"
amsel laughs. "the magic of what we do was always live. to be able to do
it in front of a live audience, to connect an audience and feed off the
audience response in that manner was the best way of capturing what we
did."
fans are wise to catch the quartet now while they can. amsel reinforces
what has been said elsewhere: this could be it for voices on the verge.
"this may be the only tour that we do," she says. "it most likely is. it
may be something we come back to in a few years. none of us has been able
to say. we definitely don't see having a new record in the next few
years. so to have a successful tour of this nature right now, we're
really pleased."

hey peoples!
just wanted to give a short report on the girls on cbs:
the host opened with asking them the traditional questions: where they got
their name from, what have they done since their last album, do they always
split the album six songs each, etc. amy said they recorded much of the
album as a band and at home. :) the host also asked emily what the special
was tonight at her restaurant--and emily laughed and said, "i'd have to call
and find out." they both looked very happy--and the drummer looked so into
his percussing.
they played "moment of forgiveness" and the first verse or so of "our
deliverance". at the ending credits, they played "become you". i think
they also played a snippet of starkville when they showed the second cup
cafe sign with the indigo girls on the marquee. oh, and they played the end
of closer to fine before they started mof.
like neil, i will not be going to the mann center on may 31st (i'll be in
california); but, i hope y'all have fun there, and have a great opening act
like spearhead to warm you up. thank you tim for sharing the votv concert
details--makes me almost want to drive all six or so hours to be there.
karen, you rock, speeding ticket girl!
diane--soon celebrating a four-year anniversary of being on the list.

i found this song about a year ago. i have no idea who sings it but it
is an interesting sound (especially if you get ig overkill from
listening to them over and over and over for 6 years) does anyone know
who might sing it?
i could put it in my ftp folder, but i want to avoid the infringement of
copyright thing. (so if i don't hear who it is in about a week, i might
put it up) oh, and i need to put up a disclaimer not to upload any mp3s
from cds (no one has done that, but i don't want it to be a problem
since i guess i would be liable) the indigo girls' stance is still that
they don't mind bootlegs as long as they are traded (as opposed to sold)
bootlegs, right?

hi there!
don't have the whole song worked out completely but here's what i got:
the intro is a mix of a and dsus2 (xx0230), i think.
the verses are: a, em, bm (224432) and dsus2
the chorus is the same but for the "the more i go the less i know"
part, she's starting with a again (on "go") then i'm at a loss... bm (on
"know") sounds more or less okay but it's probably not what she's
playing,
then am again (on "burn") and then it could be a dsus2 again on
"return".
hope this helps:).

hey y'all,
if any of you happen to have taped ig on the saturday morning show and have
closed captioning, try re-watching the interview segment with a&e in the
beginning. right around the part where the host mentions the new album,
take a look at the captioning. he says, "their ninth album being praised by
critics and fans right now is called become you..." and the captioning
displays, "their album is called "my husband is gay" you." truly
bizzare...

madison, as karen said, was a really awsome show. i however, had a big
problem with people skipping into line. remember the huge debate a few weeks
ago about whether or not tehre should be people saving spaces for other
people? yeah, well, i've decided that if you save a place for more than one
other person you basically suck. when i arrived i was 5th in line. after
three seperate people in front of me had welcomed the 8, 4 and 12 people they
(respectively) were waiting for, i was kind of perturbed. whatever though, i
was still in the front row, if waaaay off to the side.
they played every single one of my favorite songs from the new album.
(starksville, yield, and become you) actually, i think they played all of the
amy songs except n.s.
maybe i had such a good time cause for once i didn't go crazy trying to boot
and take photos of the show which i always do. it was just really relaxing
and fun. amy blue button down shirt and jeans, really nice belt buckle. could
anyone see what it was?
and i couldn't see their shows cause as was mentioned the stage was like 3
stories high. ig said they felt like they were in purgetory and the balcony
was heaven and the pit was hell. heh.
yeah, so, good show.
i don't know why everyone keeps sayign they've lost all this weight. i think
if anything amy's gained a bit (which is good, she was lookign really skinny)
and yeah. emily's lost a but but nothing amazing.
i too hate mrs. fun. i don't want to cause my family's friends with them and
their really nice people. i think they're actually talented as musicians too
but their stuff just doesn't appeal to me. 9and i've seen them a billion
times now cause they always open for ig in milw and madison.)
right. this e-mail is too long.

howdy ya'll,
well, sunday night, the concert was friday, and i
swear, i dunno how to summerize things. i have twenty
pages written down in a notebook chronicling the whole
darn day, but gees, it'd be hard to boil that down!
it was... amazing. i've seen/heard a lot of recorded
shows, and i tell you, even *those* don't do them
justice. i'm really honored to say that i took part
in all the audience participation during songs like
"closer to fine" and "galileo" and "shame on you"
live, and not alone in my bedroom dancing around like
a dork! it was so surreal to have the girls twenty
feet in front of me instead of on my tv screen or in
my cd player. they're just glorious in person.
here's the set-list:
shall we dance (with mrs. fun, on amy's label, from
madison)-amy and emily joined them on this one, as
they were the opening act, and it appears that the
girls just decided to do it last minute cause they
didn't really have a clue what they were singing, and
had a sheet between them to share and at one point amy
was supposed to sing but she got this look on her
face, shook her head and emily stumbled into the verse
a little late to cover her, it was hilarious. think
"i don't even know your name" on pot. mrs. fun is a
weird little duo, but emily seemed to dig them cause
about five minutes into their opening set our entire
row got all excited and i looked where everyone was
pointing and sure enough, emily was standing off to
the right of me, bobbing her head and clapping and
even gave a *monster* whistle-the kind you use your
fingers for!-at the end of one song. she dug the
keyboardist, who i admit is fantastic at what she
does, whatever that *is*!
least complicated
ozalline
deconstruction
become you
power of two
reunion
love will come to you
yield
collecting you
shame on you
get out the map
starkville
closer to fine
kid fears
galileo
encore:
she's saving me
moment of forgiveness
chickenman/bitterroot
aw, it was just incredible. fashion report-you know
you want to know-:emily was dressed all in black,
really classy black slacks with a black tee-shirt with
a design of a native american covered by an unbuttoned
black shirt, rolled at the sleeves of course.
amy was dressed in *tight* faded jeans, a stone blue
button down shirt tucked right in and her fantastic
cowboy boots, plus a groovy chunky brown belt. she's
breathtaking in person... i behaved myself, but i felt
like i might faint! to keep in line with the new
tradition i saw being set, yes, her ass looked great
in madison. (oo, dunno if i like calling her back end
that...)
anyway, they were kinda chatty, and it was so cute.
near the beginning emily took notice that they were
pretty high up, as the stage is about eight feet from
the ground, and she glanced up at the balcony, then
down at us on the floor, and stated, "well, ya'll are
so high, and ya'll are so low, that must mean i'm in
purgatory!" everyone laughed and she added, "but
we're all connected at least." guess that means i was
fifth row center, hell.
someone let on that there were birthdays in the crowd,
and amy found out the age of one, 26, and commented,
"26? ah to be 26 again... just wait till you hit
thirty, *everything* changes." then she asked what
sign we were in right now and emily told her it was
aries, and she bubbled, "oh, that's *my* sign! i have
a birthday coming up... but it's not important," she
mumbled, going quickly into the next song! 38, gees,
that's not old at all!
what else did they say... cause i sure can't describe
what the songs were like, cause they were just
amazing. well, amy screwed something up during
"collecting you" and right after it was done had to
have a 'team conference' right then and there with
emily, and eventually she admitted that she's really
obsessive compulsive and needs to discuss her mistakes
with emily immediately or else she just won't feel
better! she's such a ham!
it was a great show, though not many people seemed to
know the new songs, so i just sang extra loud instead!
"chickenman/bitterroot" was the one thing i was dying
for them to play and wasn't sure if they would since
they mess around with the set list every night, and it
was *so* electrifying live! it was the only song amy
really let loose on and just stomped her feet and
clapped and growled and swayed... that's *my* amy, and
it was glad she made an appearance, even if just for
the last song!
no broken strings though, aw.
so, yeah... i feel pretty... just dazed and happy.
nice way to end my spring break. i *need* them to
come back now though... i'm addicted!
ok, enough, i'm done, peace and love!
~juliana

maybe, just maybe, it will turn up on the radio after awhile. our local
radio station, 105.5 triple m, frequently plays recordings of concerts
that have come through madison on sunday nights. i can email the station
and see if that's likely for this show...
man, that was a good concert, too! it was like a giant sing-along love
fest. did you guys feel the energy?
if only the opening band had been more in line with the ig's style... they
clearly were very good at what they do, it's just that i, and most of the
audience it seemed, were not into that sort of music. except dana, who i
was sitting next to. she seemed to love it. so that's great for her. but
if it had been, say, rose polenzani, it could have been the best concert
ever.

lisa loeb was good. she brought her guitarist and played with the mtn. stage band <br />
and the show was opened by shannon mcnally...and i highly recommend picking up her cd (right after you get danielle howle's) <br />
<br />
she was amazing!!! sort of bonnie raitt/shannon curfman-ish <br />
<br />
definately worth the 16 hour drive!!!!!!!!!!!!! <br />

hi folks,
sorry that this is after the fact, but i didn't know until my very cool mom
called just minutes before. yesterday (mon), ig were on the oxygen network's
morning talk show. not sure what it's called or if it will be re-run.
i don't know what they played before the commercial break, but during the
last 15 min, they played mof live along with a nice little chat. also, they
showed least complicated vid over the ending credits.

with the major input on this coming from claudine lapsky and her
watching the aol sessions video very closely:
capo 7:
intro:
g, d, am, c
verses:
em, g, d7
em, g, d7
em, g, d7
em, g, d7
em, g, d7, em
em, g, d7, em
chorus:
same as intro
hope this helps:).

oh my god! i just basically listened to starkville for the first time,
and it blew me away. it has a great dylan influence, especially in the
old storytelling theme. i didn't even read the lyrics yet, but i'm very
curious. i love amy!

yes, i know i'm late on this thread but my copy just arrived.
mostly, i think this cd is great for the most part. yes, the live versions
were mostly better than these versions, but overall it's a fine cd. the one
word that came to mind while i was listening to it was "sleepy." the songs
are mostly gentle, slow, and jazzy. i like its understated nature. some
thoughts on individual songs:
moment of forgiveness: this version is just about equal to the live version.
nice emily solo.
deconstruction: i really like the piano, but the live versions are superior.
become you: the consensus on this one was that it was really bad compared to
the live version, but i kind of like it. the live, duo version is better,
but this song captures a kind of civil war-era sound that i find really
appropriate.
you've got to show: don't like the sax part or the jazzed up feel to this
one. wasn't a fave before and certainly isn't now.
yield: i love the drums on this cut, so i actually think this one may be
better than the duo live version. great song no matter how it's done.
hope alone: to me, this is the dud of the cd. i can't imagine it will grow
on me, but i could be wrong. now i'm really glad they didn't play it at
buffalo.
bitterroot: this song got butchered. the live version is so great with that
twangy guitar and this version just cannot hold a candle to it. i'm really
disappointed. i guess i'll just have to get a boot with
chickenman/bitterroot on it. or perhaps, the girls will see fit to do
another live cd???? please!!!
our deliverance: i like both versions, but the live one is superior. one of
emily's best activist songs.
starkville: i much prefer the slower live version, although this is ok. i'm
glad i have the bonus disc with the duo version of this song. this song is
just haunting and awesome.
she's saving me: not significantly changed (at least not judging from my one
listen). i love this song to bits.
nuevas senoritas: the very slow, quiet live version is more effecting, but i
have no real complaints about the studio version. i like this song and think
it has the potential to really grow on me.
well, that's my $.02
cheers,
tom

well, seeing as the igs only owe sony one more album on their current
contract, and another 'best of' is kind of out of the question, my guess is
that their next album will be some sort of live release.

hello to all ~
i haven't posted in what seems like ions but...my take on become you, now that i have been listening day in and day out for two weeks, is that it has grown on me to the point at which i think it is one of their best releases in many moons. i love the first three songs ~
even the prozac sounding penny whistle. you've got to show, although i really like the words, is probably my least favorite song on the cd, yet i don't dislike it. i disagree with tom about hope alone ~ its melody hits a chord with me ~ i find the line "you're a land of secrets, its only citizen" to be quite descriptive of ... well, let me just say...someone who isn't working their program to potential.
i could go on and on, but my boss is calling me, so i'll cut it short.
the girls sound great on become you. my only criticism is that i'd love to hear a few more raw guitar solos...
all in all, this is a very fine cd. it continues to grow on me and will probably spin in my player for a long time to come.
can't wait to see the live performances of these songs.
back to the place where lurkers dwell.
peace ~

okay, i know i'm in the super-minority here, but i like the drums. seriously. i
have the bonus disc and i do see what people mean about the acoustic version -
it definitely has an eerie quality that the studio cut does not, and i'm glad i
have it - but for all that, i prefer the album track.
to my mind, the album version is the best night-driving song since chickenman;
it has the same combination of brooding concentration and frenetic wildness.
that particular flavor of intensity is created in large part by the drums - the
percussion works like a blood-pulse to me. but then i'm pretty much ready to go
to bat for peter collins's production choices on any of amy's songs this album,
so that may just be me.

i wanted to see how others feel about environmentally friendly cd packaging.
i was all for getting rid of those huge cardboard packages that cd's used to
come in like 10 years ago. i also thought the idea of packaging the actual
cd in an enviro-friendly case was great way back when. i will be the first
to recycle and suv's piss me off.
however, my new become you cd is already in shambles. a few transfers from
car to office to car to home have it looking ragged and haggard. you close
the cover too quickly and it bends the liner notes in half as they are glued
in. my swamp ophelia cd has more scuff marks than a stage after riverdance.
it looks terrible and you can barely tell what cd it is. 1200 curfews case
can't even hold the cd's. isn't the idea around enviro-friendly stuff to
reduce waste. but the plastic jewel case is a good thing as it tends to
last longer and protects the cd and liner notes much better. no one is
throwing out jewel cases. i know that it's pc to make the cases out of
recycled material but it seems to be at the cost of quality in this case. i
applaud ig's efforts but am not happy with all their cd cases falling apart.
i feel like this is blasphemy but am glad it's a free country...

sorry to waste bandwidth here, but this point is so well made, i had to
chime in. i totally agree with everything mandy said here.
however, as someone else pointed out, bitterroot was destroyed on the album.
the fact that there is almost no quitar in the chorus, where the live
version is all guitar. its the best part, the harmony and that full acoustic
guitar. i think they must purposely strive to find a more unique sound on
record because they know the live version will be different and more
acoustic.
its still a great record, overall.

---------------snip--------snip-----------------------------
indigo girls red hot and true
by john nemo
special to the pioneer press
two women walk on stage with acoustic guitars.more than 1,400 faces are
filled with adoration. applause builds and approaches the stage like a
wailing ambulance siren
it is 8:07 p.m. at first avenue in minneapolis. here is what you need to
know: these are the indigo girls, otherwise known as amy ray and emily
saliers. they are here lo celebrate release of their latest album
"become you". they been together since the late 1980's , when they came
out of atlanta, ga, with hits like "closer to fine," and "galileo."
the music starts with "shame on you", shame on anyone not standing among
this sea of human beings right now, because a wave of energy is rippling
through us, bouncing bodies in it's wake.
ray and saliers begin playing. send the drummer home without dinner.
there isn't even a bongo in the house. bass? keyboards? backup
singers? you'll have nothing and like it.
instead, two voices come together as naturally as hand fits glove. ray
, with her husky tones, is the low end, saliers is the angelic high side
soaring above the smoke and sweat-filled air.
the two vastly different voices meet somewhere sweetly in the middle,
the power of two interlocking harmonies enough to keep even the most
jaded ears riveted. the lyrics are about life, about god, they are
about the spirit of being a human and trying to figure out life's
questions.
people dance without drums, proving rock bands everywhere wrong. new
songs are introduced to the audience, almost appologetically in some
cases. the crowd sings along to everything, no matter what year it was
recorded.
women are everywhere. they are the audience. they are the roadies they
mix the sound. they sing the songs. they play mandolin, 12-string
guitar. saliers solos remarkably, fingers flying up and down the
fretboard without obvious effort.
on "chickenman,she turns her guitar into a bass-thumping, 18-wheeler
humming down a country highway. she rolls along the guitar's low
e-string, notes reverberating through the crowd's belly as it claps
along.
the audience is in love they are delirious at every turn, but especially
during " closer to fine." the energy inside the room goes even higher
as the song starts, like an electrical current running through the
veins. a woman nearby bounces around like a human jumping bean, ray and
saliers are pleased.
"i guess we're reallu good. thankyou," ray says. saliers starts to
talk, stops and then blurts "you guys are (bleeping) awesome!"
it's 9;10 p.m. the women who has been shouting "galileo!" during quiet
pockets of the evening has finally been rewarded. she immediately
grasps a strangers hands and the two begin dancing in a circle like
giddy children.
a few minutes later, the two women finish up up their evening. they have
commanded, controlled, cajoled, converted, and caressed their audience.
the show has lasted just under 90 minutes. it ends with a song called
"the power of two."
absolutely.

what's going on? so is it the european release that comes without liner

however, my new become you cd is already in shambles. a few transfers from
car to office to car to home have it looking ragged and haggard. you close
the cover too quickly and it bends the liner notes in half as they are glued
in.

as i am being sent there next week for a professional training. i don't know
anything about the area and wondered if any kind souls on this list could
give me any ideas of restaraunts to try or particularly fun places to go. my
girlfriend wants me to find out if there is really a "liberty ave.", like in
queer as folk (?).

they could still be eco-friendly and make them from a hemp polymer. you'd
get the strength of plastic and i'd say it is even better for the
environment than paper, since we kinda need all our trees. when i was in the
business, i had several samples of items made from hemp plastic. i think it
was ford that has started experimenting with using hemp panels in their
prototype cars. and they could print the liner notes and artwork on hemp
paper or at least tree-free paper.

the indigo girls
become you
(sony, 2002)
when the indigo girls first charted with 1989's "closer to fine," its jangling accessiblity positioned them as a female r.e.m. both bands have drifted away from the mainstream over the past few years. stipe and company have buckled under the pressure of staying big, and by maintaining their political earnestness the indigos have gone without another hit. that might change with become you, a downright breezy album whose telling opener “moment of forgiveness” oozes with joie de vivre. 1999’s come on now social delighted in musical dabbling and guest appearances; this time around it’s all effortless harmonies, acoustic arrangements and forthright emotions. the constant tone is one of reconciliation, from the self-explanatory title track to the gracious “she’s saving me.” sure, there are some fearsome mandolins on amy ray’s “yield," and “starkville” is a chewed-fingernail narrative about the girl who got away. but emily saliers’ “you’ve got to show” sounds like vintage james taylor, and ray’s closing “nuevas senoritas” lets their everpresent liberalism serve the quietly moving music rather than the other way around. through the years, the indigo girls haven't gotten big, just good.

hkf's,
things got a little darker since my last post about
chastain. the atl-ig shows at chastain are being
promoted/sold through classic chastain/aso - see the
link - and so good seats are going to be tougher to
get. it seems that individual tix's won't go onsale
until sat., may 18, 2002 - 10:00 am. ig is not
playing with the atlanta symphony orchestra, it's just
sponsored by them, mind you.
now, as you can see on the website, you will be able
to purchase tix's now - but only as part of a series.
you can do it three ways (sort of) - friday series
(4), saturday series (4), or take-5 series (5 shows
obviously). once you get either a friday or saturday
series comprising of 4 shows, you can also buy a
single tix for the other ig show you haven't bought -
but then again, that's just another way of doing the
take-5 series w/ 2 ig shows and 3 others. this way
you will be able to get fairly close to ig - box seats
just off of the floor (small coolers only here i
believe) or good orchestra seats.
if you don't do the series, and wait until the
individual tix's go onsale, you probably can't get
better than row m - or half way back in the orchestra
section. that's because half of the place is already
sold to all the stupid corporate and series-ticket
holders as a part of the aso - yep, it sux big time.
but, on a brighter note, chastain is a beautiful place
to see a show and any seat in the park is an enjoyable
experience. plus, it will be a cooler show, so you
can bring all the wine & cheese you want (or in my
case, all the cold pbr i could want) so that's a
pretty sweet setup. (my wheelie cooler is sweet cause
it doubles as a table too, fyi)
all questions & concerns about this concert should be
directed to jen lucero. here's her home phone:
ummmmm... j/k.

quick clarification right now. but if you do the
take-5 series, you are unable to get box seats. you
will only be able to get center terrace seats (row m
and back). but, if you do either of the friday or
saturday series, you will be able to purchase box
seats but you will then also get stuck with some
pretty crappy shows (except for bruce hornsby imho on
sat). but when you do the fri or sat series, you can
get an individual tix in addition to the 4, in order
to make sure you get both ig shows in advance of the
5/18 public onsale date. gosh, this kinda bites.
best venue - worst tix dealio.

hi y'all. an old stag article i found, pretty interesting i thought. if it has been posted before please pardon me.
peace,
dorothy
ray has her say
indigo girl amy ray takes aim at rock's 'boys club'
by greg kot
those who think the indigo girls' amy ray and emily saliers are a pristine folk-pop act and nothing more are in for a shock.
ray's first solo album, "stag," released on her atlanta-based indie label, daemon records, brings out the singer's inner riot grrrl, with spiky guitars and blistering indictments of a culture that patronizes women and gays.
ray is backed by the fem-punk trio the butchies, who perform with her thursday, april 12, at metro, as well as a handful of peers (kelly hogan, luscious jackson's kate schellenbach, the breeders' josephine wiggins) and at least one pioneer (joan jett). even when the singer is playing little more than a mandolin, on the appalachian-style death row lament "johnny rottentail," she sounds like she's ready to punch ol' johnny's lights out. and, in what may be the punkiest move of all, she names names -- specifically that of rolling stone publisher jann wenner -- in "lucystoners," her rant against what she calls the record-industry boys club.
ray, explained in an interview why she needed "stag" to get a few things off her chest.
did you actually have an evil brother like the one in "johnny rottentail"?
not a brother, but a producer who shall remain unnamed. he was such an unpleasant person he would actually make me cry all the time. i was standing at my little music stand inside the studio, fuming, and i just wrote the whole song down -- this fantasy about this guy who is a real jerk. the columbine shootings had just happened, and i also was thinking about how this person could be the reincarnation of that little guy you made fun of relentlessly in 2nd grade, questioning my role in creating someone like that.
you'd never know you had this kind of record inside you listening to the first few indigo girls albums.
on a personal level it has taken me a long time to learn how to articulate as a songwriter what i have inside. my earliest songs are from this place where i learned how to play guitar in a certain setting, which was folk-pop. i was listening to neil young, james taylor and joni mitchell. and then patti smith comes along, the replacements, husker du, and a lot of diy (do-it-yourself) atlanta bands that i began to hang around with. there's a song on the new album, "late bloom," that talks about how sometimes it takes a long time to find yourself, but it's ok. i've never felt in tune with the quote-unquote singer-songwriter aesthetic, and as these other influences started creeping in i started to push the parameters of the indigo girls in the last few albums. but i knew these songs i had to do myself, because no matter how hard i tried to fit them into the indigo girls, it wouldn't be the same as what i'm hearing.
how's emily feel about you doing this?
we've been playing together since we were 15, so she understands that when we do something together, it completely changes what it is, whether it's her song or mine. at some point she'll do a solo record too, because she has songs that when i sing on them they become different. our voices have baggage with them when we sing together, so it's nice to have a separate space. then we're going to get back together and make a real stripped-down, low-budget acoustic folk album as the indigo girls with a few of our musician friends.
did you tell emily that you've got this song that's probably going to get you banned from rolling stone magazine?
she told me, actually (laughs). i was really excited about the song, because i'd been trying to write it for six months, and then i figured out how to say all these things i'd been feeling about the patriarchy in the industry. i sat down with her and our manager and played them the song and their response was, "well, i guess we won't ever get an article in rolling stone." that's when i knew that one didn't belong on an indigo girls album. it had to be a solo song. part of emily is saying, "we're working hard, and now you just shot us in the foot." but i feel like we're shut out of that anyway, so why not go out in a blaze of glory?
"lucystoners" is about a lot more than rolling stone's coverage of women, though, right?
the song goes through the journey that emily and i and a lot of women have taken through the good-old-boy rock world -- from clubs, to radio stations, to print media. it's not just whether women are getting covered, it's how they get covered, and how many women are writing, and what stories they're allowed to write. huge mergers have made the industry more corporate, and diversity is discouraged. even men are shut out if they don't sound like limp bizkit. so my attitude is, let's create our own infrastructure. lucy stoners is a feminist who jumps ship, inflates her own raft and says we're not gonna take it anymore.
greg kot is the tribune's rock critic.

oh i have a great one..you gonna grill it or bake it? this will work well
for either.
about a cup of lemon juice, some dill, some butter, salt pepper, some basil
]let it sit in this in the fridge for about 30 minutes or so. remember that
the lemon juice will begin to cook it while it is in there.
then cook it how ever you want. i leave the skin on it so you get some good
crunches with the flavoring and such. doesn't take long to cook...when the
fish begins to separate easily and is a good salmon color...you will be able
to tell .
it is wonderful and easy to do. sorry about the typing..have 2 new hand arm
braces on to try and help thems newly diagnosed.....sparkie

let's try this:
the indigo girls
become you
(sony, 2002)
when the indigo girls first charted with 1989's "closer to fine," its jangling accessiblity positioned them as a female r.e.m. both bands have drifted away from the mainstream over the past few years. stipe and company have buckled under the pressure of staying big, and by
maintaining their political earnestness the indigos have gone without another hit. that might change with become you, a downright breezy album whose telling opener, "moment of forgiveness" oozes with joie
de vivre. come on now social delighted in musical dabbling and guest appearances; this time around it's all effortless harmonies, acoustic arrangements and forthright emotions. the constant tone is one of reconciliation, from the self-explanatory title track to
the gracious "she's saving me." sure, there are some
fearsome mandolins on amy ray's "yield," and "starkville" is a chewed-fingernail narrative about the girl who got away. but emily saliers' "you've got to
show" sounds like vintage james taylor, and ray's closing "nuevas senoritas" lets their everpresent liberalism serve the quietly moving music rather than the other way around. through the years, the indigo girls haven't gotten big, just good.

i remember we had this conversation a couple of years ago. i'm sure
everyone has their own personal preference, but i kind of like the worn
out look of my digipak 1200 curfews. it reminds me of my old album covers
from the 70s.
also, i for one can't seem to own a plastic cd case without cracking or
breaking it. so i *have* thrown out quite a few jewel cases in my day.
perhaps the solution for all of us is to use cd carrying cases for our cds
and leave the plastic or digipak at home.

i'm not sure about the other shows for the summer, but the radio city
show is 40-45 bucks a pop. does this seem a bit pricey to anyone
else? perhaps its just the venue. all the times i've seen ig its been at
colleges or small clubs. these are usually around 30 dollars,
sometimes less. usually i buy a ticket for myself and my boyfriend,
but due to the price it looks like i'll be going solo to this ig show (i just
shelled out 65 bucks for two tix to ani in poughkeepsie).
and what's with this internet presale business? why make it harder
for those of us who prefer to pay cash? is this just a ticketbastard
thing?

they are all that high. phily and wolf trap are the same roughly unless you
are getting lawns, then they are about 1/2. what kills me is its another
$10-12 minimum with ticketbastard charges. that's almost a 1/3 of the ticket
cost added. over $50 to see them in decent seats.
like neil said. supply and demand. they play smallish venues and that
doesn't help. plus, they gotta pay their band, the venue (which prices
probably continue to rise). i wish it was cheaper but i'm glad i'm only
buying one ticket as well.
i'm hoping to see them at wolf trap and phily (back to back nights). i'm
hoping to get a taping rig setup too so i may have some boot action to
offer.........since not many tape and i go to enough shows.
its the least i can do.....:)

did you all know that the indigo girls become you album was #1 on a billboard chart last week?
apparently, billboard now has a chart for internet album sales and guess which album was #1?
i think that's what russell carter meant when he said that the internet folks "led the charge" in getting become you to #30 on the regular billboard album chart in his web site announcement.

so i have qustions about a couple of the emily songs on the album.
first: in deconstruction, she says, "the show starts to close, i know
how this goes, the plot's a predictable showing". is that a comment of
boredom with the fans that go to their shows, or does it have something
to do with the theme of deconstructing love? what is the deconstruction
of love?
then: in collecting you. from the chorus, i gather that the song is
about trying to keep in touch with loved ones, but some of the lyrics
are so inventive that i have no idea what she's talking about. for
instance, what's "the pleading prayer and hairshirt sting"? or "the
shudder predevelopment of the inkful in the pen". what is that? i also
don't understand the "motivation smokes a name" line.
maybe i'm really dense, but someone shed some light please!

i see it as a little bigger than that. the next line is that great one about
"its back to the hourglass we're going". she's saying we came here,
but it's over and now it's back to business as usual. and yeah, there
probably is a hint of boredom in that. i mean, how many shows have
they done? and every time there is everyone's favorite audience
member shouting out "romeo and juliet" or "galileo". i'm sure it is
pretty predictable. but knowing emily, it's a metaphor for something
much bigger than that. exactly what, i'm not sure.
as for collecting you, i really am not fond of that song. maybe it will
grow on me, but i just can't bear to listen to it.

i don't know about the whole thing, but i would say that the "pleading
prayer and hairshirt sting" sound like a reference to asceticism...of
course, that's in the context of (i think) love/some sort of non-platonic
relationship, so i think it has to do with the attitude of suffering for
love.
actually, i was reading over the lyrics, and i notice an extended religious
metaphor...could this song be about someone's search for enlightenment?
(some examples, other than above, include the one with "agony and rapture"
and "dug across your landscape, buried in your cave", both kind of christian
influence...i sense some more, immediately before and after the line
mentioned in wendell's post, but can't put my finger on which religion
they're from, and i would hate to insult someone's religion by applying
something to it that doesn't fit.).

<is that a comment of boredom with the fans that go to their shows, or does

it may have something to do with boredom, but more on emily's part than the
fans. is that what you meant?
"the show starts to close, i know how this goes, the plot's a predictable
showing".
i always thought this was referring to the encores that they happened to
stop doing for awhile when this song first came out. during chatter between
songs, they have both mentioned how they think the crowd feels obligated
when it comes time for an encore, and they just "stand behind the curtain"
or whatever. i guess just because she chose to use the words plot and
predictable made me think that she sees this as too scripted.
"and though it seems grand, we're just one speck of sand..."
i think this refers to the notion that they don't see themselves as rock
stars - just ordinary people like all of us. i've always seen that part of
the song as emily's plea for people to think of her as a person and not some
rock star personality.
"and back to the hourglass we're going..."
yeah, whoever mentioned boredom or monotony may be right.

my friends and i have been in agreement that we feel like this is a song
about a crush or unrequited love. when i was thinking about how
appropriate the metaphor is (collecting little tidbits of attention and
time from someone you long to romance), i was thinking about how we
literally "collect" amy and emily. must be so weird for them. so i
thought about how the song could be from the point of view of a fan. it
sort of works, although not as well as the crush interpretation.
however, then i considered other songs on the album. yield could easily
be read from a fan's perspective. someone who expected more out of a
meeting with amy, for example. i think it is an interesting
consideration, in the least, even though i know that it is probably not
the original meaning of the song.

subject: ig on kgsr e-town last sunday
mime-version: 1.0

hallo folks,
i was driving from dallas to austin this past sunday around 8 pm and was
flipping through radio stations, when i heard, "epic" and "atlanta" in the
same sentence... turns out that (as i suspected) ig were playing live on a
radio show called e-town. i don't remember what all they played, but it did
include mof, our deliverence, galileo, etc. there was another bluegrass
artist that played, and i can't remember his name, but i really liked the
music. and the ceo of patagonia was there talking about eco friendly
products like solar panels and organic cotton. there was a nice interview
with a+e, discussing their activism, with a kinda funny quip about brittany
spears thrown in. the musicians all sounded great and they ended with a
really beautiful rendition of shenandoh.
i emailed the show to see if i can get a transcript (or tape) of the show,
but haven't heard back yet. is there anyone else in the austin area that
caught this, and by chance taped it? just checking.
they have some compilation cd's available with some pretty cool artists on
them, but not including ig (at this point).
<http://www.kgsr.com/frames.html> (then click on programs and scroll down to
sunday).
and, i think at some point someone inquired about amy's belt buckle. at the
austin show, i think it was a school bus, even though i thought it was a
train until i scooted up close to the front. fabulous show. super fun
night.
that's all i have.
cheers,
amy teplow

if you're willing to wait a bit, e-town usually posts the shows in real

i've never even thought that it had anything to do with an ig show. i've
always thought it was about how when you are breaking up with someone,
there's a certain sense of drama that is always the same, repeating
itself, and that it wasn't so much about boredom, but about that aweful
expectation of breaking-up drama.

i find this really interesting because i'd never considered the possibility
that it might have something to do with their performances. i've always
thought it was a kind of returning to the beginning of the song: about how
the type of argument she starts the song with has a pattern. particularly
because of the line before "you'll take on my list of shortcomings"
and i think it might generalise to conflict in general.

not quite the same.
i think she's saying she's in love with someone and she thinks they might
be in love with her. but she doesn't see them enough to understand what's
going on. in the meantime, although she knows how silly it might be, she
just keeps on collecting the other person, and waits for something to

just my thoughts.

listening to emily's songs on become you, i just keep wondering if she's in
the midst of a break up. anyone know?
and no, i'm not shopping for intimate details, i just wondered if that was a
motivating factor, because all of her songs seem to be part of an 'i'm
feeling disillusioned/dissatisfied with this relationship' cycle.

hey folks,
this review's from the billboard site - shame they couldn't get
the name of the album correct (!)...

indigo girls
album title: becoming you
producer(s): peter collins
genre: pop
label/catalog number: epic 86401
source: print
originally reviewed: march 16, 2002
if there's ever proof that an act doesn't need radio or mtv support
in order to thrive, it's the enduring team of emily saliers and amy
ray (aka indigo girls). for more than a decade, the girls have
consistently sold millions of records, as they've undeniably tried
less and less to court industry sectors that will likely ignore
their smarter-than-average brand of pop. instead, they've wisely
opted to simply follow their creative muses. with becoming you, they
offer their strongest set in years, as they also revisit the lean,
acoustic sound of their salad days. that said, gorgeous, finely
crafted tunes like ray's "moment of forgiveness" and saliers' "hope
alone" are not retreads. rather, these songs are far more complex
than the artists were capable of 10 years ago. when you have an act
that never stops growing, it's no wonder that countless fans follow
their every move-without the urging of radio or video programmers.

no, it's about love, not us. i, too, worry that she may be writing about a
breakup. heaven forfend! i just want emily to be happy! :p

a hairshirt is a shirt made of hair for penitence purposes, i think.
