"when i say 'i will be true to you' i am drawing a quiet space
beyond the reach of other desires. no-one can legislate love;
it cannot be given orders or cajoled into service. love belongs
to itself, deaf to pleading and unmoved by violence. love is
not something you can negotiate. love is the one thing stronger
than desire and the only proper reason to resist temptation."

indigo girls find equality on 'become you'
by chuck campbell news-sentinel entertainment editor
march 22, 2002

* "become you," indigo girls (epic)the indigo girls sound more cohesive than ever on their new "become you," a return to an acoustic-based foundation after 1999's adventurous "come on now social."

workhorses amy ray and emily saliers have been plugging away since the mid-1980s. once leaders of a folk rebellion that never really materialized, the indigo girls have been immune to the music industry's fads ... heavy metal, grunge, hip-hop, pop ... and have stuck to an organic sound that has rewarded them with reliable success.

rather than co-write songs together, the two women customarily split the writing duties, which often resulted in albums that seemed like two solo efforts spliced together. that particularly worked against ray, whose penchant for melodrama and stridency kept her lagging behind saliers.

yet ray has been steadily catching up, and on "become you" she is every bit saliers' equal. (perhaps ray's 2001 solo release, "stag," was the final push she needed.)

both performers embrace an easygoing confidence in their play and words, a mood that transfers to the pair's supporting band on "become you." produced by peter collins, who presided over the indigo girls' "rites of passage" (1992) and "swamp ophelia" (1994), the new release is a reflective and understated effort from a pair of social and artistic activists who have edged to the brink of 40 and are happy where they are.

ray's roots-based songs include the bluesy single "moment of forgiveness," the effervescent "yield" and the percussive romp "bitter root." she also contributes the title track that blends americana with an enticing pop chorus.

saliers brings a more sedate selection to the mix, including a low-key expression of deep feeling, "she's saving me," and the smooth romance of "you've got to show" that features unexpected yet effective saxophone by dan higgins.

unlike past efforts, the indigo girls don't sound like they're trying to change the world on "become you," and at times they're even a bit bland. yet there's something inescapably comforting about two skilled artists who are so calmly sure of themselves.

yeah, i'm so lucky..i get to see them twice a year it seems....not
counting their hiatus.
and they are back at the orpheum! yay! that place is meant for
sound......northrop (where they have been coming) is so big,
and when you see it...it's clear that it is meant for looks..the
accoustics are terrible! if you're at a show in northrop auditorium,
you best learn the song ahead of time so you can sing along without
having to sing...."uh all on allileo, eee oh ni vision ee oh nsight...."
(ha ha) with the rest of the crowd! if you know what i mean!
soundwise...the orpheum rules
and it's a little more intimate.

figured it was a familiar song with the wrong name,
but it's a song i haven't heard about a girl and her
sister. emily sings it. can someone please tell me
where this comes from? i checked lifeblood, but i got
nothing. i haven't been in touch with the list in a
couple of years, and i'm kinda bummed i've never heard
of one of their songs:(
thanx, celeste:)

celeste,
>i downloaded and mp3 called "ballad in plain d." i
this is a bob dylan song. it's on "another side of bob dylan" which i
believe came out in 1964. i'm not sure where the girls' version is fun. i
didn't even know they did this song. pretty cool.

hey celeste:
the tune "ballad in plain d" is from a bob dylan compilation cd. as far
as i know, there are 3 of them so far. i know on the first one the
indigo girls do "tangled up in blue" and michelle malone, kristen hall,
and wendy bucklew also contribute tunes. "ballad" is from the 2nd or
3rd compilation, i'm not sure which. i have never cared for dylan's
voice but i do enjoy his songwriting and love to hear other folks cover
his songs.
anyway, i got all of my copies of these cds while vacationing down in
atlanta... i'm not sure how readily-available they are in other areas.
if i remember correctly, i think there were limited in their
printings... but perhaps someone else can confirm that?
later,
twink!

i'm doing a paper on the advocate's depiction of
lesbians. if you have the time, and an opinion on the
advocate, please reply to me.
1. do you read the advocate? if so, are you a
subscriber or do you read every issue (if not, how
frequently, etc.)?
2. why do you read the advocate or why do you not
read the advocate?
3. do you think lesbians are underrepresented in the
advocate?
any other relevant thoughts on the matter would be
welcome.
thanks!

i do not read the advocate, ever, because even though i am a lesbian, i do
not choose to receive news and features through a gay lens.

in addition to the ny times, the boston globe, cnn, my local news stations,
etc. i appreciate alternate perspectives of news stories - gay lenses
included, and like to supplement my news with a gay publication. different
perspectives can be refreshing, detailed, and informative. after all, how
much gay specific news is reported in the mainstream news? not a whole lot
- if mainstream news devoted equal time to minority issues, the news would
be a 2 1/2 hour show and newspapers would be 2 inches thick. however, i
enjoy and need the connection to gay culture that a gay publication
provides me.

my message was meant to be private, and i apologized for that. i really
hope that my stupid e-mail mistake doesn't lead to a discussion of this.
i would hope that my simple mistake could be just left to be instead of

apologize, both for my original mistake, and my hopes of putting the issue

most of the "tale action" section is comprised of links to other pages, so
repostin it here would either be very long or very pointless, but they do give
the number for the capitol switchboard at 202/224-3121 (to request a senator's
office directly.)
and while you're there and getting those environmental ya-ya's out, ring up
again and tell your senator to vote no on drilling in the arctic, since that
issue hits the table tomorrow...
mandy
*************
april 2002
dear friends and comrades in the struggle for environmental justice,
in february, george w. bush issued a letter to congress approving yucca
mountain (nevada) as a permanent federal repository for high-level nuclear
waste. if congress approves, tens of thousands of tons of high-level nuclear
waste will be shipped across the country on trains and trucks, endangering
millions and millions of americans, and dumped at yucca mountain a sacred
site to the western shoshone and pauite peoples. we must stop congress from
approving yucca mountain as a nuclear waste dump.
indigogirls.com and website links will provide you with the information you
need to learn more on this issue and take immediate action. time is critical,
as a vote in congress is expected some time this spring.
please join us in our efforts you can make a difference! tell your friends,
tell everyone you know, write a letter or call your senator and tell them to
stop this dump. together we issue a resounding, "no nuclear waste at yucca
mountain! no nuclear waste on native lands!"
sincerely,
emily and amy, indigo girls

hey dee-ig at the taste of chicago is an interesting thought. it is still
very free as far as i know. i will have my grubby paws full of coupons,
fried okra, boneless rib sandwiches. i'll have one for ya! i'll throw a
wave out for ya too.
i wish they were playing in a theater later that night. although on a
pleasant evening, grant park can be very attractive if you ignore the hoards
of 708ers, 630ers, and 847ers. ;) take care!!--g

hello all!
i'm planning a trip to disneyland in july which (oh gee!) happens to
coincide with when the girls are playing in the area. woohoo! i don't
think i'll be able to see them at both venues (greek theatre la and the
orange county fair) so i need to pick one. it may come down to which i
can get tickets for, but i'd like to know what the venues are like.
i've seen the website for the greek theatre and it looks wonderful. any
idea of it's assigned seating or general admission? is the surrounding
area (within walking distance) tourist-friendly?
i'm guessing "county fair" means just that, but i have no idea what that
might mean. i'm picturing an indigo girls concert at some of the fairs
i've been to here.... it's very amusing. ;) i'm guessing that it'll have
the usual midway plus all the 4-h kids with their pigs, and tables full
of jam to be judged... good guess or bad guess and is it a better place
to visit than the greek theatre? decisions! any idea what the concert
venue is like and if it's likely to be general admission or not?
i won't have a rental car, unless i rent one the day of the concert, so
that'll be an issue too. oh the things we do to get to a concert!
i'd appreciate any advice!
thanks :)
and i'm sending out happy birthdayish thoughts to anyone celebrating the
day :)

as far as the actual theater, i've never seen a show at the fair, so i'm not sure about specifics. one press release says the capacity is 8,500. i'm looking at the aerial photo of the fairgrounds, and i think my girl scout troop's annual campout uses the theater space. if it the same theater, the stage is open air, and in really bad shape (creaky floorboards that feel like they're going to give). there's a small concrete area below and in front of the stage (where i presume the reserved seats would be -- i'd estimate room for 100 seats, maybe less) and behind that is a large, flat grass field. i'll check on that, but i'm pretty sure that's where they hold the concerts.

dear friends and comrades in the struggle for environmental justice,
in february, george w. bush issued a letter to congress approving yucca
mountain (nevada) as a permanent federal repository for high-level nuclear
waste. if congress approves, tens of thousands of tons of high-level
nuclear waste will be shipped across the country on trains and trucks,
endangering millions and millions of americans, and dumped at yucca
mountain a sacred site to the western shoshone and pauite peoples. we
must stop congress from approving yucca mountain as a nuclear waste dump.
indigogirls.com and website links will provide you with the information
you need to learn more on this issue and take immediate action. time is
critical, as a vote in congress is expected some time this spring.
please join us in our efforts you can make a difference! tell your
friends, tell everyone you know, write a letter or call your senator and
tell them to stop this dump. together we issue a resounding, "no nuclear
waste at yucca mountain! no nuclear waste on native lands!"

i just checked seats for the to show on a wim (i already got mine thru
ticketbastard) and i couldn't believe it when sect 102 row c came up for a
single. 3rd row center just behind the pit i believe. they must be holding
some of the better seats.
my seat from tb is row n, same section. the pricing is a little cheaper too.
my ticket cost with all the charges about $42 us. here it will cost about
$36us. not bad. i gotta applaud them for fighting ticketbastard.
a 25% surcharge is outragous.

definitely not the 9:30 club. i saw the df reunion show and ellis
paul there and had a great time.
food is ok. think expensive bar food (good beer).
the downside of concerts at the birchmere is that there is no
standing or talking (let alone dancing or singing). they bill it as
a "listening room" which is exactly what it is. they have good
concerts and are a great place to see acts, but its just about the
opposite extreme from the 9:30 club.

ok, i just had to share this tip with y'all. i live in northern new york,
and (so far), my closest venue is boston. i am going to both shows there,
june 1 & 2. i was looking for accommodations online the other day and was
dismayed to find that even a motel 6-type establishment was $85/night. so
just for fun, i tried priceline. priceline, imho, isn't much of a deal like
it was back in the day--you're lucky if you can get 40% off, and by the time
they add all their fees and high taxes back in, you barely have any kind of a
deal. in fact, most of my offers are just rejected outright. but given that
i have lots of time still to find lodging, i decided to bid low. i went with
less than half of a cheap, one-star rate (and i said i'd stay anywhere in the
city and surrounding areas) and offered $40/night just for fun. to my
surprise, it was accepted, and they "upgraded" me to a 3-star hotel, namely,
the hyatt regency in cambridge! whoo-hoo! just thought i'd pass that info
along to anyone else travelling to the boston gigs. oh, and by the way, they
do have parking there and a shuttle into the city. --gina

my friend tammy and i saw it last night - definitely a good view,
although the ending may not appeal to some...
a lot of laughs, and one incredibly moving scene between jess and her
mother...
definitely recommended...

it actually depends on who you are going to see and
whether they are going to be in the bandstand or the
music hall. if they are in the bandstand then there
will be a dance floor like area where you can stand in
front of the stage.
