my phone in nc rang this evening at 9:45 and who was on the other end but
emily and amy singing the wood song (my fave). thanks dee!!
live from chastain, ga.

hey all,
considering it was chastain (which i hate), both atlanta shows were pretty
good. the good thing about when they play multiple dates in the same town is
that they rotate the setlist a lot, so you get to hear a lot of old faves.
(remember that year that played 3 dates at chastain a few years back? by the
end of it, they'd played almost every song you could have wanted to hear.) why
isn't ig playing on the bricks or downtown rocks? (we've got two dueling friday
night free concerts in town all summer. you could have seen alanis morrissette
or cake on friday for free (general admission, so you could get as close as you
want) or you could pay $50 and watch ig with binoculars like i did. ugh.
friday:
danielle howle and the tantrums opened. i like her voice a lot better than
her songs; i always wish she'd throw in a country cover in her set just so you
could appreciate her better. as is, the quirkiness of her personality dominates
the impression you get.
i didn't write down the setlist either night (hopefully, somebody else can
supply the specifics). they opened with "bitterroot", which i must say i like
better live (as with everything on the new cd). i couldn't make out what was on
amy's t-shirt (it was black with some musician's face on the front and tour
dates on the back; the writing was in red glitter; maybe somebody closer can
tell what it said). they did "tried to be true" both nights, not one of my
favorites but still nice to hear after so long. "deconstruction" is a really
pretty song, but i wish they hadn't slowed it down so much. it was so great to
hear "the wood song", still my favorite lyric by emily (always a nice shot in
the arm when you wonder why things always seem to have to be done the hard way).
"starkville" is very good, but again, i wish they had left it more like it was
before the recorded version. i tend to think ig needs the most minimalist
drumming possible, so i'm not much of a fan of what brady blade adds to their
sound. the overkill bashing on "yield" was annoying, but as sedate as the crowd
was, it probably helped pep them up. i didn't think the crowd loosened up until
"least complicated" (about halfway through the set); chastain's a place where
you bring your catered dinner inside and eat all through the opening act and
digest your food for the first half of the headliner. danielle sounded pretty
good on the guest vocal for "closer to fine". (i'm so tired of hearing that
song, which was never much of a favorite with me, that the guest spot is the
only thing to look forward to by now.) "faye tucker" and "reunion" were great
to hear. i'm glad they're doing "laramie" and it does sound pretty good, but
it's not as raucous as when amy does it with the butchies. i thought it was odd
to play "she's saving me" as the first encore; after they had the audience on
their feet, they had to sit back down and listen to a quiet, introspective
sound, but it worked.
saturday:
k's choice opened. good voices, good-looking, nice-sounding band. better
than danielle howle and the tantrums and more mainstream appeal than, say, ellen
james society. can't remember any of their songs, though, except the one where
the lead singer (sarah bettens) was panting into the microphone. (it was
something about breathing.)
amy had on these tartan pants with two skirt pieces draped over the front and
back with lots of cords tied off at the knees and cuffs; it was like something
out of "braveheart", but it was a nice look. danielle howle had on a
knee-length dress/skirt (which never looks right to me when you're standing up
playing guitar); sarah bettens just had on a faded t-shirt and pants; amy's look
on saturday was something in between. "collecting you" is very nice but it's
almost too fast for its own good. glad to hear them do "trouble", but the crowd
was sitting on its hands for that, "go" and "laramie" -- it just ain't right.
"ozilline" was a highlight. sarah bettens sounded good doing the guest vocal on
"closer to fine". nice to hear "jonas and ezekial" and "watershed". "virginia
woolf" is always great when they get to the big crescendo at the finish. maybe
best of all was the encore of "kid fears" with gert bettens (k's choice) doing
the real michael stipe part. all this time, i've practically never heard them
do it with a male third voice. i guess i must have heard shawn mullins, gerard
mchugh, michael lorant, (?matthew sweet?) fill in over the years somewhere along
the way, but this guy really got it right. they wrote such a wonderful
three-part harmony and we practically never get to hear done properly live.
--
with the curfew at chastain, you have to be done before 11pm, so it's always a
shorter set than you might otherwise get (9:15-10:45). (so many things not to
like about the place but it's almost a must-play venue for ig now.) for a
chastain show, it was pretty good both nights.

probably their one-hit wonder single "not an addict".
personally, i wasn't too impressed with the set list, the crowd, or the girls
at the friday chastain show. maybe it got better on satuday, but i wasn't
there. they did, however, kick some serious acoustic-duo booty on sunday at
the ala scholarship bash! i think the $75 ticket was worth it, but i was
rather disappointed that the post-show reception did not include a meet&greet.

greetings --
many people have asked if we have an official policy regarding the taping of indigo girls concerts. we do now and here it is --
best regards,russell carter
indigo girls official taping policy
audience taping is permitted at all indigo girls shows. we believe that taping shows is helpful in the encouragement of fan interaction and a way of having a permanent memory of a live show. if indigo girls are playing in an event which features multiple bands, the taping policy of the headlining band and/or the festival event will dictate the taping policy for that evening. all taping of live indigo girls shows is restricted to audio only; no video taping will be allowed. audio recording is limited to portable equipment which includes microphones and a recorder. power or other auxiliary equipment are generally not supplied, so be prepared to bring your own battery powered equipment. soundboard feeds will not be allowed. if you wish to tape, we encourage you to arrive early to set up.
all taping must be for personal and non-commercial use only. no profit is ever to be made from live shows. you are permitted to trade shows with other fans for an equal amount of media (ie. 2 cds for 2 cds). indigo girls, inc. reserves the right to seek legal remedies against anyone that is in violation of this policy.
trading of shows has been a large part of recreating the live experience and we want to continue offering this option to fans. please keep clear of the crew during the show. remember that the audience's enjoyment of a live show is paramount and will never be sacrificed to accommodate tapers. please refrain at all times from requesting fans to move or keep quiet. please respect other fans while you are taping.
thank you -indigo girls

brunch at watershed
eggs don't go over -- or down -- easy
by amy jinkner-lloyd <mailto:amy.jinknerlloyd@creativeloafing.com>
all atlanta -- indeed, anyone, anywhere who values good, honest food -- owes a debt of gratitude to scott peacock, the executive chef at watershed, for championing southern regional cuisine. years ago, he teamed with the legendary edna lewis, doyenne of the genre, to revive not only the traditional recipes, but also the practice of employing indigenous, organic ingredients of the highest quality.
lewis grew up in virginia at a time when quail was hung for a week in the feather before roasting, the food on trains was prepared over a wood-burning stove. in her cooking, she used lard so pure it had less fat than butter.
peacock's menu echoes the classics while being thoroughly modern. nearly every dish is the result of an intense devotion to bringing out the flavor inherent in each ingredient. there is nothing to compare with the fried chicken special, served only on tuesday nights. i've heard complaints about paying $17 for two pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and a cream biscuit. ridiculous! it's worth twice that to experience what two days' worth of soaking in buttermilk can do to chicken.
the news that watershed is now open for brunch, then, sent us rushing to decatur to see what revelations peacock had in store for sunday mornings. and there are some delightful things: french toast paired with tart fresh fruit and sweet candied bacon ($9), for example; the tangy buttermilk pancakes ($6); the simple but satisfying brown onion vegetarian gravy and cream biscuits ($6); sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits ($7); or the hearty breakfast shrimp on rice ($9).
silky home-cured gravlax ($12) tops the list of cold plates. translucent slices of trout, a refreshing change from the usual, heavier salmon, can be draped over long slices of toasted bread and dotted with chopped eggs or onions or capers.
this dish is a typical example of the watershed style. its flavors are pure but subtle. impatient diners often miss the nuances and decide the food has no taste. it's their loss.
but in the midst of watershed's otherwise exemplary fare, a shocking and unforgivable thing is happening to eggs. first, neither our server (one of the least informed, least attentive and, apparently, least interested i've encountered in some time) nor (he claimed) the kitchen staff had ever heard of soft-cooked eggs, four-minute (milky soft whites and runny yolks) or otherwise. after two go-rounds on the issue, he brought out a pair of eggs cooked beyond the pale. when we tried to send them back, he said there was no point to it. the eggs were already cooked, sitting in a bowl. "we don't cook eggs to order," he said. what?? even waffle house does that.
until the kitchen shapes up in that area, then, consider yourselves warned. a heavy hand with poached eggs adversely affects the comfortingly bland chicken hash, chucks of meat submerged in cream gravy on top of gritty corn griddle cakes ($9); and the creamed spinach with poached eggs and country ham bits ($9).
but even manhandled eggs cannot dim the brilliance of the ultra-creamy, ultra-smooth grits. have them with the most basic breakfast -- bacon, eggs, grits and toast ($9) -- with the groaningly heavy but expertly salted country ham steak, red-eye gravy, grits, eggs and buttermilk biscuits ($12), or order them alone. a full breakfast can be constructed of this and other side dishes: two eggs any style, cinnamon or cheese toast, bacon or candied bacon, creamed spinach or roasted new potatoes, ranging in price from $2 to $6 for the bread basket containing six baked goods of your choosing. (i highly recommend the tiny brioches.)
short though the brunch menu is, it nevertheless has something suitable for any appetite presenting itself 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., not an easy thing. for true breakfasters, there is wonderfully chewy steel cut oats, to be doctored with apple sauce, brown sugar and clabber ($6). for health nuts, there is homemade muesli with fruit and yogurt ($6). those of you who hate the thought of brunch will be relieved to know you can order the black angus burger with extra sharp cheddar ($9), a standard from the lunch and dinner menus.
later in the day, the shed salad ($5) and greek salad ($10) appeal. watershed's salads are always a treat, thanks to the variety and freshness of locally grown produce. greens are especially nice, and the kitchen employs them liberally in or out of salads. two examples, a spinach salad with fried oysters ($9), and my personal favorite, the bacon, watercress and tomato sandwich ($8).
that a kitchen could produce such wonders and cook eggs so poorly is puzzling and regrettable.

hi everybody!
the following is a review of the nashville show i wrote for the brucespringsteen2
yahoo group. while obviously not written for this group, you're welcome to read
it if you've nothing better to do at this moment. there's at least one misspelling
(ozilline), it took me a while to figure out how to get a new window on my mom's
aol.
oh, and thanks again to all those who responded to my request for ig boots,
i've enjoyed them all immensely!
dave
***********
yay! i finally get to do a concert review! living in a small town in
alaska, we don't get many concerts, at least no one you've ever heard
of.
so the obvious question, when indigo girls play nashville, is did
they play "nashville"? amy wrote the song long ago about her not
entirely positive experience attending vanderbilt. read the lyrics:
http://www.indigogirls.com/lyrics/byalbum/rites.html#nashville <http://www.indigogirls.com/lyrics/byalbum/rites.html>
so not surprisingly, no, they didn't. but it was a great show, and
i'd recommend you go see them if you get a chance. if you think
indigo girls are just two chicks with acoustic guitar singing sickly
sweet emily songs like "power of two" well, yes, there's some of
that, but on many others, they rock! some of the highlights for me:
"ghost" a beautiful emily song, beautifully done.
"closer to fine" always fun.
"go" as rousing a call to action as bruce has ever done, imo.
"starkville" while much of the concert was alternating mellow emily
songs and rocking amy songs, the roles were occasionally reversed. a
very haunting amy song from their new album was fleshed out nicely.
"laramie" a neil young-esque song from amy's solo album about the
murder of matthew shepherd was the most intense song of the night.
"watershed" another beautiful emily song done by request.
"kid fears" the concert closed with another of my favorites, with one
of the guys from k's choice, who did a great job opening, nailing the
michael stipe part.
the setlist:
bitterroot
shame on you
power of two
become you
hope alone
ozzylyne
cold beer and remote control
tried to be true
ghost
yield
closer to fine
moment of forgiveness
collecting you
go
get out the map
starkville
least complicated
laramie
gallileo
encore:
watershed
kid fears
the rest is all kinda personal, so read at your own risk. my wife and
i were flying out of nashville after the bonnaroo music festival next
weekend anyway, and when we found out we were just missing the girls
in detroit, we found that if we stayed an extra day in nashville we
could see them there. so we did. my wife's cousin and her husband and
their six-year-old came up from houston to join us. we were worried
it might be too loud for our ten-month-old son and their daughter,
but it was fine. my biggest complaint was all the concession stands
only had bud and bud light. then we saw a stand called "beers of the
world" that had a heineken tap and a foster's tap and a couple others
i didn't recognize. "sorry, those don't work. we have bud and bud
light." yum.
some of the other things you've heard about an indigo girls concert
are probably true. there's a lot of, well, let's just say there
wasn't a big crowd in the men's restroom.
so here's my guarantee, if you've read this far, go see the girls
when they come to your town. if you hate them, i'll send you a bruce
boot of your choice, no blanks, no postage. if you love them, i'll
send you an ig boot, no blanks, no postage.

hey...
<<8/1/2002 wedgewood rooms portsmouth england>>
i've been there many times - i used to live near there. it's a hole in the
wall with a capacity of 300 or so.
seriously, if you're ever going to get on a plane to go to england to see
the indigo girls, do it for this - it will hands down beat any show they
play in the us this year, including the album preview club shows. if we had
any spare money we would, but i shall just remain jealous...

nickelodeon's decision to air a special for children about
same-sex parents has generated a firestorm of criticism from
conservative family groups. the leader of the traditional values
coalition calls the show "a cover for promoting homosexuality

that "it is not a promotion of the homosexual lifestyle. it is a
promotion of tolerance and respect."

yucca mountain
april 2002 - by emily saliers and amy ray
dear friends and comrades in the struggle for environmental justice,
in february, george w. bush issued a letter to congress approving yucca mountain (nevada) as a permanent federal repository for high-level nuclear waste. if congress approves, tens of thousands of tons of high-level nuclear waste will be shipped across the country on trains and trucks, endangering millions and millions of americans, and dumped at yucca mountain - a sacred site to the western shoshone and pauite peoples. we must stop congress from approving yucca mountain as a nuclear waste dump. read more... <http://www.indigogirls.com/corresp/2002/2002-04-ae.html>.

hi,
i just accepted a new job (yah!). great news except that i decicded not to
use my vacation time (and perhaps piss off my boss) by going to seattle so
soon. therefore i have two seattle tickets for sale (one for each night).
with fees and all, they were about $40 each. however i want to get rid of
them. i am selling the set for $65 total or each ticket for $35 (if you only
want one night). please let me know. i know that you can buy these ga
tickets through tm, but please, if you plan to go and don't already have your
tickets, jelp me take these off my hands.
i am still going to portland (i now work as a travel advisor and was able to
get a great airfare waaay below market cost to portland for 24 hours -- plus
my portland ticket is front row, not giving that up). maybe i'll meet up
with some pacific nw people there.
thanks!

it's entirety is beautiful
and i'm not being a biased ig fan. i've been there twice and i love it.=
there's so much more to atlanta than what's offered that's ig-related.
go..go now! :)
