howdy ya'll,
i think katherine was talking about this before and i
know i saw mention of it on the ig official site under
the pictures section of all things, but there was a...
german, or at least european radio program the girls
did where they handled what songs were played and
answered the questions that they chose, and i was
wondering if anyone recorded that and would be willing
to either do a trade-i have a fairly good collection
of boots-or do a b&p-cause it's not *that* good-for
it, let me know, that would be fantastic!
hope everyone is havin' a very igish afternoon! i for
one am bringing every studio album, plus stag, plus
1200 curfews to work with me because for six hours
i'll be running the expresso bar on my own and that
means anyone who comes through will get to listen to
the ig over the stereo system! i love working on my
own. my coworkers just don't know honest to goodness
good music when they hear it. peace and love from me
to you!

well, that show had actually two parts. one aired already... the concert
part. i recorded it and will upload the mp3s of it to my website
(www.indigogirls.de <http://www.indigogirls.de/>) soon (will post about it once it's done).
i'd ask everyone who wants it and has a good enough connection to
download it from my site rather than asking for a snail mail trade.
but if there are people here, who can't get the stuff online then they
can contact me about it and we'll work something out.
the second part of the show, the one which is called "on the tracks"
and which features the "interview" (it's ig introducing the songs they
chose for that show, songs by other artists and the dj asking them
questions about their selection of music, too), hasn't even aired yet (it's
airing on august 4th, i believe, i'll be taping that, too, of course and will
post about it, once i have it).
the next thing to look forward to right now is a webcast on july 22nd of
the concert they did in hamburg.
i already posted all the details about that but i'll post them again closer
to that date, as a reminder, k?
be well,
kathrin

hi there :-)
this was what they played at berkeley according to their set list (yes, i
was the tall girl who grabbed one from sullie - sorry to those i reached
over :-)
bitter root
trouble
become you
power of two
ozilline
collecting you
yield
virginia wolf
shame on you
get out the map
starkville
deconstruction
closer to fine
faye tucker
watershed
kid fears
least complicated
laramie
galileo
encore:
baby (vanda shepard and emily)
midnight train (with vanda shepard)
go
all in all, i thought it was a great show! not the best i've been to, but
great none the less. amy wore her red plaid kilt pants with the wierd strap
on the knees, a little black tank top and her hair in braids. maybe it's
just me, but she's getting a bit femme-y these days :-) emily wore some
black jeans, a black t-shirt with something on it and a blue shirt with
white panels on the front. everything was great. loved hearing them rock
out on laramie! my partner thought it was wierd to end with go, but i
thought it was wonderful - very energizing! the audience was kinda mellow -
a lot of people sitting down throughout the whole show. but there was
plenty of energy for a & e to vibe off of. they didn't talk much at all, a
point even they mentioned, which was probably what i liked the least.
little stories and snippets are fun to hear at any concert. i've only been
to 6 ig concerts, but my partner, who's been to 11 or 12 said it was amazing
to hear them do watershed live - she'd never heard it live before and loves
the song. the stuff for sale was a bit dissapointing to me - they were out
of most of the sizes of the shirts i was interested in when i got there.
all in all, it was a great concert at an amazing venue and once they started
singing, you forgot all about the cold! :-) did anyone get any pictures? i
forgot my camera :-(

reprinted without petmission. amy dancing to... well read on :-)

where the girls are
recording and loyal fans keep the indigo girls on the road
by paul rogers
it's an indicative irony that, in a music business increasingly
dominated by lawyers, sponsors and mergers, some of the more
enduring acts succeed through sheer love of what they do. take the
indigo girls, for instance. the folk/rock duo of amy ray and emily
saliers has prevailed for nearly two decades, picking up platinum
records and multiple grammy nominations over an eight-album
career. yet, claims ray, they've lacked a long-term game plan since
their adolescent partnership gelled in the early '80s:
"i used to listen to cher and dance around and stuff, but i'm not
sure i ever envisioned being a rock star," ray says, chuckling.
"when we were teenagers, we were playing together. ... for us it was
just a one-day-at-a-time thing. it was very d.i.y.-make your own
cassette, make your own album and conquer one club at a time. we
didn't really think beyond that, and i think that's what's taken us
where we are."
even now, ray lives in the moment and doesn't dwell upon the
success of the indigo girls. "if i really think about what i'm doing
for
a living and where i'm at, sometimes it's a little odd. but i don't
think about it that much ... it all waxes and wanes over time, and
i've learned to live with that."
she's quick to credit the longevity of the indigo girls to their fans.
"we have a very flexible, loyal
audience-they sort of go with us when we try different kinds of music.
i think what keeps us doing it is
that we just love music and we really want to play. i mean, we really
have it in us to do that. and we tour
all the time-that's what we want to do and that's the way to make your
career last. ... you've got to get
out there and be in front of people."
the indigo girls tour so extensively that they're forever finding ways
to keep shows interesting for both
their audience and themselves. in 1993 they played the "ten dollar
tour," where all tickets and t-shirts
were 10 bucks, and five years later they played free shows in high
schools across the south. they also
mix performing as a duo and with a full band. both formats offer
contrasting joys, ray explains.
"to play as a duo is usually more spontaneous and there's a real
direct relationship with the audience.
when we play with a band i think you lose a little bit of that, and
what you gain is the ability to really
represent what you've recorded in a way that ... rocks! our band right
now is a particularly good band for
us because i don't feel the separation from the audience as much as i
have in the past ... it feels pretty
spontaneous."
indeed, ray is so comfortable with the indigo girls' current touring
lineup that they recorded their latest
album, "become you," as a band effort, despite ray's original,
minimalist intentions. "i really wanted to
make a very simple, acoustic record-i've wanted to do that for a
while-and emily didn't really want to do
that. the compromise was that she still wanted to have a band, whereas
i was thinking, like, completely
stripped-down. but then we got this band together that i love so much
and they're so rootsy ... it was a
very cohesive experience."
in contrast to their previous release, 1999's "come on now social,"
"become you" is a more organic affair
and notable for its lack of high-profile cameo appearances. ("come on
now social" featured everyone
from r.e.m.'s peter buck and rapper chuck d to bonnie raitt and mick
fleetwood.) the resulting work
reveals a refreshingly direct line to the listener and lays bare the
indigo girls' maturing songwriting skills,
while retaining their signature lamenting, country-tinged and
harmony-heavy folk. "it has a certain
emotional quality, which to me, is somewhat reminiscent of some of our
earlier stuff," ray observes. the
album also rekindled the indigo girls' relationship with producer
peter collins, who'd been at the helm for
their platinum "rites of passage" disc in '92 and the grammy-nominated
"swamp ophelia" in '94.
for all their achievements in the musical arena, the indigo girls have
always combined career and
voracious activism for a number of causes: the children's health fund,
native american land rights, and
voters for choice, among others. "for me-and i think for emily, too-i
don't think it's an 'indigo girls
thing,' it's just a personal thing," ray notes. "if i wasn't an indigo
girl, i'd still be an activist. but i
definitely find it completely integrated into our career at this point
and wouldn't even want to be just
doing music and not activism-it doesn't interest me at all to do that
... it seems empty to me."
the indigo girls have not only persisted in an increasingly
one-album-wonder era, but have also made
the most of their public podium. a genuine joy for music, a day-to-day
approach to business and a rare
awareness of the big picture have kept the indigo girls near the top,
while ruthless, career-obsessed
upstarts have come and gone, helping no one and saying nothing.
for amy ray and emily saliers, the message is not just in-but all
around-the music.

hi y'all,
long time, no post.
seattle shows were excellent! i especially liked k's choice, though vonda
was good as well. and, of course, the girls were fabulous, but that goes
without saying. they seemed in a particularly good mood on thursday
(7/10). they seem to really like seattle. and seattle seems to really like
them.
as for the discussion about meeting ig. i have waited after shows a few
times and most of the time they haven't been real chatty and they've gone
right to the bus. after the show on 7/10 in seattle, emily came out and
signed stuff, but i asked for a picture and she said she wasn't doing
them. that's cool. i totally understand. i liked the comment someone made
about being a chef and a crowd of people waiting for you after work and
asking what you put in your alfredo sauce! it got me thinking about what
it must be like to be well-known and have all these (albeit well-meaning)
folks wanting pictures with you, but what if you just don't want your
picture taken? she did sign my little free coaster thingy that they put on
all the chairs. and amy signed the other side and let me have a picture
with her. (thank you, alayna(sp?) for taking the picture! it turned out
great!) they were both really nice, but emily seemed a little more anxious
to get on the bus. another time, i got amy's autograph in billings, mt,
but she seemed more rushed that time. there's my two cents on that.
re: license plates, mine say clsr2fn. no one can ever figure out what they
say, though. it even takes ig fans a long time. i tell people it says,
"clothes are 2 fun!" cuz i like to shop so much (which those who know me
know is a total lie)!
ok, that's all. thank goodness i've had my ig fix for a little while!

i wanted to see if anyone else thought that emily was ready to=
kill the
drummer. and what was the deal with the spotlight operators not=
knowing who
to shine a spot on? there were two lights, two indigo girls! it's=
not that
hard! hello!?!?
it just seemed that the drummer was really getting on their=
nerves. quite a
few times, i noticed a+e turning to look at him. emily motioned=
for him to
tone it down a few times. amy seemed to be talking to him more=
than she was
to emily. maybe i was too far back to see all of the body=
language, but it
also looked like he just didn't care. it appeared that he put=
them both in a
mood, and i'm wondering if that's why they weren't talking as=
much. hmmm...
another reason to just leave the band at home and tour with just=
the two of
them and the guitars. <veg> or just get a new drummer. carol=
and clare are
cool.
i guess part of my issues with the drummer stem from the=
overplaying on the
album. i had heard many of the new songs during the tour in 2001=
(both denver
shows and both saratoga shows), and i was disappointed with how=
the drums
were so overbearing on the album. deconstruction was such a=
powerful song
with just the two of them, and i thought it was ruined on the=
album. yield
had such a great flavor of its own, and then it was turned around=
with the
percussion on the album. i liked it better with just the two of=
them. call me
a purist, but i thought this was an indigo girls album/tour. when=
did it
become a blade album/tour?
in all, i'd have to say that this was probably at the bottom of=
the list of
my favorite shows from the girls. there was something else going=
on up there
on stage, and it seemed like they were pretty distracted. i'm=
also not sure
if go is the best song to close a show, but i'll take all i can=
get. maybe if
they had played a second show on sunday, i would have been more=
satiated.
maybe i'm just feeling that i didn't get the full "ig fix" i was=
lookin for.
lol!
oh! elizabeth in seattle, emily said "days" instead of "years" in=
watershed
at the berkeley show. it seemed to get a laugh from the crowd=
around me.

take care, y'all!
stephen

wow! i was like 12 rows back and i didn't catch any of this drummer
controversy :-) i saw amy motioning to the sound people a few times...there
seemed to be some problems with the sound in their speakers, as well as the
lights, as the previous post mentioned. a spotlight on emily as amy was
singing in the dark, stuff like that. i agree, not the best show. i wish
they had played a second night around here, too! but some just good ig is
always better than no ig, right? hehe....

funny how perceptions vary. my friends and i were very close and saw amy
smiling and seeming to joke with brady. they were both pretty smiley, just
not very talkative. amy even spoke to their lack of chattiness. the setlist
was great, and they did the rockingest version of laramie i have heard so
far (emily wailed on her guitar solo). lots of people were standing where i
was for most of the songs except the more quiet ones. its actually my
favorite of the shows i went to on this round. didn't notice any
contraversies though. sound was way better than at the pier shows.

at the st. louis show it looked like the drummer was cracking them up the
whole time. especially emily. she kept looking back at him like he was
crazy because he seemed to be so hyper, but she was looking at him in a good
way. especially when he got really loud, it pretty much went on through
most of the show. he is pretty entertaining.

in birmingham, he started the show with an x taped on each nipple.
anyone know what that was about? it looked like all fun and games until
he ripped them off(the tape not his nipples of course...hahaha) a few
songs into the set.
they have a string of fun drummers, kudos to them for that.

sorry if this has already been sent - i'm a bit behind on reading email:

review: indigo girls return to harmonious form
wed jul 17, 5:16 am et
by michael speier
hollywood (variety) - with harmonies as heady as they are complex, the
indigo girls are still able to strike the right pop chord when they want.
but, as their delegation of loyal fans would say, they're simply deeper than
that.

their palace visit provided a clear view into the band's back-and-forth
career: flighty sing-along favorites with introspective lyrics that have
made them a college circuit fave and hardcore roots rock which radio
playlists have shunned despite that genre's recent renaissance.
no matter the battles amy ray and emily saliers have had trying to become
bigger than they are, the indigo girls have paved the way for the legion of
femme rockers (avril lavigne, michelle branch) fixated on pop principles and
chart-topping singles. their eighth studio album, "become you" (epic), is a
return to form: a mixture of looks at past romances and personal battles,
told either with sweetness or intensity.
ray is the gravelly voiced rocker whose tunes on monday -- the
mandolin-fueled "ozilline" and "yield" and especially the opener
"bitterroot" -- took care of the hardcore rock 'n' roll, while saliers
placated the devotees who seemed more comfortable with songs they know from
dorm rooms of days gone by. to that end, the band chose "power of two,"
"galileo," "watershed," "least complicated," "virginia woolf" and "tried to
be true."
a spirited performance by belgian brother-sister import k's choice kicked
things off. trying to find as strong a following as they have in europe,
band settled on, among other songs, "i'm not an addict, "i believe" and the
title song from their new album, "almost happy" (sony). they rejoined ray
and saliers later, with sarah bettens backing up "closer to fine" and bro
gert singing on "kid fears," a role taken on by michael stipe on the indigo
girls' self-titled debut back in 1989.
indigo girls; k's choice (the palace; 1,450 capacity; $30)
presented by clear channel. indigo girls: amy ray, emily saliers, carol
isaacs, brady blade, clare kenny. k's choice: sarah bettens, gert bessens,
eric grossman, bart van der zeeuw, jan van sichem, koen lieckens, erik
verheyden. reviewed july 15, 2002.

howdy ya'll,
i've never used this list before for anything other
than discussing the ig directly, but today i need to
discuss them in terms of the bigger picture.
i tune in everyday online to kpig.com and listen to
the live feed they have on the net of their radio
station out in freedom california. they've been
webcasting since 1995 for no profit whatsoever and pay
wonderful attention to their net fans. they play the
indigo girls religiously and have done so upon my
request, little old me out in wisconsin, too many
times to count. they play some of the greatest rarely
heard-and some very
popular-folk/rock/pop/bluegrass/country music there is
and they are great enough to share that with the whole
world on a daily basis.
but because of a bill passed by the senate just this
month they had to go off the net this afternoon, as
will *many* small, independant internet stations due
to a a royalty fee that is impossible to meet for many
of these stations.
there is something ya'll can do to save the pig-which
is going to purchase stag at *my* request and actually
*play* some tracks!-and that is fill out a simple form
that will send a pre-written-very well written-form
letter to your senators and state reps. letting them
know that this is *not* the way things should be on
the internet or anywhere. they're taking away a form
of free speech by silencing these stations.
so if you have a moment please go to:
<http://www.voiceofwebcasters.org/fax/carp/smallwebfax.html>
it's really easy and the faxes will be sent even if
*you* don't have a fax machine. it takes one minute
tops and it'll help undo the damage that was already
done to kpig and will be done to hundreds of other
stations across the internet. thanks for takin' a
moment, peace and love to ya'll.

amy: amy was in black jeans and a black short sleeved button down shirt

to be a topic of discussion as of late, and a black tank top *insert

i=92m hoping that someone booted the show at the joint in the hard rock hotel & = casino in las vegas last night, and is willing to trade or do a = b&p for a copy. after being a fan = for so many years and living vicariously through concert reviews posted to this = list, i finally=85.finally got to see the girls live last night! i had to travel 3,000+ = miles=85take 2 planes, an airport shuttle, a hotel tram, and a taxi to do it but it = was so totally worth it! ( i live in = hawaii if any of you were wondering <g>). =
=
k=92s choice opened up for the girls = and totally rocked. they played stuff = from paradise in me, cocoon crash and some new stuff as well=85they closed = with an awesome version of not = an addict. anywho=85i was so caught up in actually being in the same room with a&e and = feeling that incredible live show vibe=85those of you that have been to shows = know what i=92m talking about=85 that i totally forgot to make note of the set list although i do recall: bitter root, trouble, power of two, faye tucker, become you, = starkville, kid fears (with gert from k=92s choice), least complicated, closer to fine (with sarah from k=92s choice), chickenman (no soc though = l), starkville, go, deconstruction, yield, = collecting you, and hope alone. they might = have played one or two more but i=92m not certain.
=
fashion police report:
=
amy: amy was in black jeans and a = black short sleeved button down shirt with what looked like dragons on it when they = came out to play on a song with k=92s = choice. she later changed into those = bondage pants that seem to be a topic of discussion as of late, and a black tank = top *insert sigh of appreciation here = <g>*. pigtail alert! :>d
=
emliy: no wardrobe change for miss emily but she was looking very = comfortable in jeans, and a free leonard peltier t-shirt with blue short sleeved button down shirt over it.
=
could not for the life of me see what they were wearing on their feet though i feel = confident enough to say that they were both wearing some kind of = footwear.
=
energy from the crowd was high and the girls seemed to be in good spirits, and = though emily seemed to be a bit tired at first, she perked up as the show went = on=85i=92m sure she picked up on the festive mood of the crowd. people sang in the right spots, = danced and were in a generally good mood over all. one guy went along the = railing in the venue and high fived everyone=85he was feeling pretty happy to be there=85are you on the = list?
=
one = funny exchange during the evening was when emily (or maybe it was amy) asked = the crowd if they had been gambling before the show=85when met with a mixed response emily said something to the effect of going to blow $2.00 on = the nickel slots, then she stopped and asked if they even had nickel slot machines = anymore. amy said that a friend of = theirs won $200,000 gambling a couple of years ago, but they don=92t gamble much = when they=92re in vegas because they don=92t know how to gamble right and the dealers keep yelling at them.
=
ok=85i=92m fading fast here=85didn=92t sleep last night and had to catch a 6am flight back home to maui=85i literally walked through the door about an hour ago. so to get back to the point of that whole ramble=85anyone boot the show? anyone? bueller? =

skirt-pants were a big fashion thing in the uk a couple of years ago, maybe they didn't catch on in the usa? amy's pants are like those, (ie. *not* a kilt), but with straps added. funky...

hi all!
as promised here's the reminder about the webcast tomorrow (just
copy/pasted from my old message to the list):
_________________________________________________
just got info from robert (austrian listee) on the date for the broadcast
of the hamburg show
from a couple of weeks ago. it'll be on ndr2 a german radio station on
july 22nd.
everyone else can listen to it, too, though, because they webcast
their whole program. don't be afraid of the german website...;)...
just go to:
<http://www.ndr2.de/index.html>
and then click on the link "live hoeren" (i.e. listen live) in the
navigation bar on the left... and voil=e0:).
the show starts at 9 pm cet (so it's 3 pm us eastern time, for
example).if you want to check out what time it'd be for you: this is a
good place to go: <http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/>
of course, i'll be recording the thing and mp3ing it and putting it up
on my site for everyone who doesn't have a good enough connection to
listen to it when it's being broadcast and everyone who might have to
work at the time or whatever.
be well,
kathrin
ps thanks again to robert for the info:), haven't forgotten about our
trade, will get back to you about it asap

i had the big fun of seeing the girls last week in la. i was lucky
enough to be planning a trip there anyway so i made sure to get the
concert in.

bitterroot
trouble
become you
power of two
tried to be true (rocked!!!)
collecting you
ozilline
deconstruction
reunion (rocked so so so much!)
virginia woolf "you can definitely love someone you don't know." ~
emily
yield (much rocking going on and stamping of feet by amy)
closer to fine - with sarah bettens
kid fears - with gert bettens
get out the map
moment of forgiveness
watershed - amy and emily alone on stage. magic.
shame on you
least complicated (hooray!!)

i got this all typed up and discovered they've got the setlist up at the
site. oh well!
the girls had so much energy, it was wonderful. :) it was interesting to
see them in a different city. very different energy!
i'm in the camp of thinking amy looks fantastic with that hair and that
plaid. good golly! and emily looked comfortable, which is nice. i love
how those two do a concert. it's about the music and the energy, not
about a million costume changes and snazzy choreography. ok, i'll admit
that ricky martin is an awful lot of fun that way, but still! ;)
i've forgotten most of the little cute tidbits about the show. at some
point, emily stopped singing because she'd forgotten a word. i'm not
sure how many hundreds yelled it back to her. heehee it was cute. i
seem to remember amy doing something similar...
i ended up sitting up in the balcony with my sister, which was ok. i
think i'd have been a bit happier down on the floor bouncing around with
all the rowdies. some songs just needed to be danced to, but i felt like
i'd fall out of the balcony if i stood up!
it was a great evening.
alas, no chickenman, so i still have never heard it live.
if anyone wants to send out canada vibes to the girls, i'd appreciate
it!
edmonton is still a bit far to travel.
thanks!
