thanks to everyone who replied to this query on and off list. looks
like we have a mixed bag of people who like and dislike the album. i
would say that this album wont jump out and grab you the first time you
hear it, it takes some time to grow, but once it does ..............

i just got good seats and it was the most efficient, pleasant, ticket buying experience i've had in awhile!
i called the box office, which was recommended by them as the best option (ticketmaster being the least), and got 4th row aisle, right center. front row was available, but they said although they recommend people not to rush the stage, it doesn't sound like it's a definite guarantee. also, fyi, the left center section is blocked off for brown.
good luck to all!

i agree. that was the best ticket buying experience i've had so far. i
called ppac box office and got right through and got excellent seats, emily
side. i believe k's choice (duo, which i think means just gert and sarah)
are opening for all the northeast shows this tour.

does anyone know how to get tickets for this show? there is no listing
on ticketbastard, so i called the box office (which is normally closed
on saturdays) and the lady said that the on-sale date was not yet

so, i bought the stupid poster for no apparent reason last night and wow the shipping cost is high. i was not expecting that at all!
anyway, then i dreamed that amy and emily were setting up to do an interview about the poster in the basment of my house which was for soem reason a mansion. amy was wearing this blue shirt i've talked to her while she's wearing (that soudned confusing, i mean i've actually seen the shirt in person)and was very excited to talk to me about the poster. she and emily were trying to decide what books they should be holding at the press conference and amy got very excited when i told her i thought i owned the same book she wanted to hold. she told me to go get it and she's sign it so i told her that i'd try but i didn't know where it was and i thought i'd locked my dog in the bathroom earlier so i had to try to get her out first.
oh, and a week ago before my show opened i dreamed that amy and her daughter came to see it. hilary clinton was following her around and begging to hold her kid and amy finally let her. i was watchign the whole thing and thinking, i wonder if amy ever thought that hilary clinton would want to hold her child. i also thought, at least since hilary is a known person there's very little chance that she will kidnap the kid and if she does amy will know who did it.
that's it, no more lsd before bed.

preamble:
i was in bad humour going into the gig tonight, bad day at the office,
so i wouldn't have been surprised if i had been disappointed. tessa
perry(?) opened for the girls and i would like to say she was good. she
had a terrific voice and played the guitar well but the background noise
meant i couldn't hear properly. no such problem for the girls.
sully was having a laugh with the people up at the front and taking
pictures before the house lights went down! the set, i have to say that
in spite of my bad humour the girls managed to hit all the right notes
!! this was a duo show. i think the order is more or less correct but
i am open to contradiction.
1. get out the map
2. become you
without the studio frills this was one of the high points of the night,
absolute class.
3. power of two
emily put it up to the audience to sing along on this one and sing along
we did.
amy introduced ozilline by saying that it was written about her granny.
she said she was very cool and used to write in to a country music show
called he haw asking if the would play the girls stuff. she asked us if
we had heard of this show and a few at the front pretended they had, the
rest of us just stared blankly at her. she said she hadn't the heart to
tell her granny that it wasn't the sort of show they wanted to be on.
she said he haw wasn't the sort of show that would have a couple of
girls like them on, i'm not sure what she meant by that, explanations on
an e-mail please !!
4. ozilline
after the song amy told the story about the person signing along to the
songs at the concert in denmark earlier in the year. someone mentioned
this on the list before. she said it was hard to sing it with a
straight face after this !
5. deconstruction
another highlight and another song that is far, far better with just two
guitars and two angelic voices.
6. yield
7. watershed
8. shame on you
9. virginia woolf
in the mood i was in this song hit the spot, you might say that someone
sent a letter to my soul.
10. three hits
class.
11. closer to fine
emily mentioned that they had been playing at a festival in belgium when
they were joined on stage by the hothouse flowers for this. she said
liam o'maonlai danced around the stage like jesus. then she went on to
say that they weren't here tonight. no guest singers on this one so it
was left to the audience to sing the last verse, solo.
12. starkville
one of my favourite songs and again much better with just the acoustic
guitars. this was turning out to be a special night !
13. hope alone
a song that speaks to me in a very personal way, watery eyes time !
14. johnny rottentail
johnny rotten ray beltin' it out on the mandolin.
15. collecting you
16. gone again
17. least complicated
"long ago when we were taught that whatever kind of puzzle you got
you just stick the right formula in, a solution for every fool"
what more can i say !
18. chickenman/bitterroot
emily saliers take a bow. no words of mine could do justice to the
guitar playing on this from the skynyrdesqe frenzy of chickenman to the
haunting slide guitar of bitterrroot.
encore
19. kid fears
community singing time again with the audience taking over.
20 galileo
see above for kid fears.
when the house lights went up the buzz in the audience was just
incredible.
a very special night in dublin, i think i've worked out that formula !
a + e = ig
peace and love,
jim
ps i'm not a great one for boots but if anyone booted this show i would
do anything, within reason, for a copy.

"hee haw" was a '70s country music/variety show hosted by buck owens and roy
clark. they did hokey comedy sketchies with country themes. [this was around
the time when "the beverly hillbillies", "green acres" and "petticoat junction"
were all big tv comedies. glen campbell also hosted his own variety show that's
being rerun nowadays on the country music television channel.] they had all the
big country stars of the day doing musical numbers and i also think they would
try to break unknown artists from time to time by letting them perform a number.
this is probably the segment amy's grandmother was trying to get her/them onto
by writing to the show.
i can remember a running gag on the show where this big fat guy with no teeth
named junior samples would do a fake ad for his used car lot and he always ended
with, "the number to call is br-549." (i.e., so country they didn't have 7-digit
phone numbers). i think there's an alt.country band nowadays that got its name
from that joke.
a frequent celebrity guest might be "goober" from "the andy griffith show".
i'm guessing that "hee haw" was produced out of nashville, tennesse, which is
"music city", the center of country music and maybe 8 hours from atlanta. i
guess part of the plan in amy's going to vanderbilt (in nashville) at first was
that it was a way to break into the music business without leaving the south.
(remember that before ig and the hip-hop scene that came with laface records, it
was unthinkable to imagine you could remain in atlanta and break into the
national music business.) but, as "nashville" accounts, amy didn't like it
there so much and then transferred back home to emory in atlanta about the same
time emily was also transferring there as well from tulane in new orleans,
lousiana.
[sorry for rehashing what a lot of people already know.]
ron
p.s. other "hee haw" stuff i remember:
"gloom, despair and agony on me.
"deep dark depression, excessive misery.
"if it weren't for bad luck, i'd have no luck at all.
"gloom, despair and agony on me ..."
(a song they sang at the beginning of a recurring comedy skit.)
"i'm pickin' and i'm grinnin'"
(a banjo/guitar duet buck and roy played in another recurring sketch where they
told lame jokes).
p.p.s. don't get me wrong. "hee haw" was great!

great report jim.
you didn't mention the wonder that was emily's guitar solo in shame on you - i
thought it was brilliant, very mariachi sounding.

i think she was implying that the show hee haw and the
whole southern "good ol boy" redneck mentatlity that
it embraced, was not at all welcoming or conducive to
two lesbians singing on the show.
sorry for being so stereotypical, and i know all parts
of the south are not like that now a days, but it's
not a stretch to say that prejudices against lesbians
(and other minorities) were a real thing, and i think
amy may have been alluding to that.

well, according to imdb, that show was on 1969-1992 (long run!) but even
in 1992 they weren't out to the world at large. i think it was still in
open-secret stage then, wasn't it? hee haw producers wouldn't necessarily
even know. but even if you leave that aside, they have the liberal
politics and their music isn't really country. :) i don't know, maybe if
she had had johnny rottentale then...
many, many reasons why amy's grandma was off base...

marion,
i forgot lots of stuff !
like how much amy's harmonica playing has improved since the last visit
to dublin.
like emily's reference to the dublin rain. no sympathy for you gal you
only had to put up with it for a day or two, we've had it non-stop for
years now :-)
like how obviously chuffed the two girls were with the crowd reaction.
it was a real meeting of souls on the night.
like how tickets were available at the door yet the place seemed to be
packed.
there's probably more so feel free to fill in the gaps.
in my defence there was so much to remember !
on the subject of he haw. i kinda guessed what amy was inferring, the
name is a real give away isn't it. after going through my mailbox this
morning i know a lot more about the show. thanks to everyone for the
very informative comments.
i'm not coming down for a while yet !

great report jim.
you didn't mention the wonder that was emily's guitar solo in shame on
you - i
thought it was brilliant, very mariachi sounding.

i found this to be mildly amusing. kind of scary at the same time, though.

well, what can i say?
the show was excellent. we were front row and excited about the show, when three security gorillas turn up and position themselves in front of the stage. one at each end, one in the middle. luvly! trying to be as intimitdating as possible, having a go at miriam (hey girl!) about her mini disc recorder and mic. she soon sorted them out with the recording policy.
anyway, amy and emily eventually come on stage, you should have seen the look on their faces when they saw the security guy perched front and center of the stage. emily said "sorry about the barrier guys, i didn't know y'all were such a rough crowd."
i think this made the guy in front of us a little bit "uncomfortable" and he began to look pretty silly as we all sang and danced to a fantastic performance. the guy eventually sat down, and when closer to fine came on, they started to get into the music, by the end of the show, they were dancing (even if only a little bit).
aahh, the soothing , calming effect of the indigo girls.

hi everybody,
well i'm back and totally exhausted from the uk tour. loved every
minute of it though and all the great fans that we met along the way.
it was such a blast. jim has done a great job with the dublin review,
so there's little to add except to explain why sulli was taking photos
of us in the front row. we had made a banner that said "sulli, you kick
ass". we hang that on the barrier, which was quite a way back from the
stage and shouted to sulli. she was tickled by that and gave us a great
smile, went off to get her camera (or amy cam perhaps??) and took a
photo of the banner and us. :-) but the energy of the dublin show was
fantastic and a perfect way to end the tour.
i haven't seen any reviews of the edinburgh show though, so i'll step in
here.
queens hall, edinburgh 6 august 2002
for the second time this tour, the girls played in a church-type
building. yes, these are religious experiences alright! ;-)
the venue was reserved seating, which was nice and civilised, but
doesn't quite facilitate interaction as much. it always feels more of a
passive experience. the audience was pretty quiet during the songs with
sheepish singing along when prompted. seemed strange for an ig show,
but it was an interesting and new ig experience...to just sit back and
watch these two women perform.
setlist:
gone again
least complicated
become you
deconstruction
reunion
power of two
yield
collecting you
kid fears
watershed
johnny rottentale
closer to fine
starkville
get out the map
moment of forgiveness
galileo
she's saving me
chickenman

the girls were quite chatty and talked about what they did on their day
off in edinburgh. amy caught up with laundry and emily went to see
edinburgh castle...with all the other tourists! emily mentioned how she
was in awe of the history here, imagining people trying to climb the
north face to reach the castle!!?? she quickly said oh nevermind after
that ramble. :-)
during the introduction to become you, amy mentioned how she was in a
bookstore and saw a book called "the great white south". she saw a
silhouette of a man on the cover wearing a hat that looked like the kkk.
intrigued as to why such a book would be in scotland she took a closer
look to find that it was about a polar expedition!! she told us how she
likes to mine books for song inspiration, but assured us that she's not
working on any songs about polar expeditions.
emily talked of playing with alison brown at cambridge and being in awe
of her talent. she said that she doesn't know whether she should just
quit or keep going when hearing other people play that well! emily
quickly decided that she'll just keep going. yay.
amy talked of how they can't afford to bring their own sound person to
the uk tour. (sounds like they really have to cut back to make touring
over here work). anyhoo, amy said that they're happy with the person
they have at this venue.
there was a request for trouble just as emily left the stage to let amy
sing johnny rottentale. amy said that trouble is one of about 10 songs
they can't play without a band...and besides, emily was off the stage
and it's her song! as an introduction to the song (johnny r), she said
how many people think it's about her cat. she said it isn't, she
wouldn't be so cruel to a cat. she said she wouldn't be so cruel to a
person either, but likes to fantasize!
a cute moment happened in starkville. amy forgot the words after a
couple of lines and had to stop the song. she then had to ask emily
what the words were before starting again!
they changed the setlist to include chickenman after someone requested
that. amy said how that song gives emily a chance to "hotdog". she
likes to see emily "hotdog". :-) we saw later from the setlist that
chickenman replaced shame on you.
the girls were nice and chatty and amy told us of how her mic smells of
cigarettes and reeses. she said she knows that smell because she had a
friend in school, mentioned his name and emily nodded that she knew him
too. very cute moment. anyhoo, amy said that he always sat behind her
in class and she would ask him for more reeses as she knew he always had
more. she wasn't interested in cigarettes at that time.
fashion report:
amy same as in london - low cut strappy top with a dark blue short
sleeved shirt over that.
emily dark blue jeans, black v-neck t-shirt, white with thin blue
striped overshirt.
i think that pretty much covers it.
off to get some sleep now.

actually they did have some work wich only made me appreciate them more
then i did at first. during the show there was this really drunk girl
who rudely made her way through the crowd to finally end up behind kathy
and me. there she was being drunk, interferring with our concert
experience as she was pushing kathy and actually pulling my microphone
cord. one of the "gorrila's" noticed this and bless him, he leaned so
far behind me towards this girl (making sure that his voice was not
being recorded) to tell her to stop being rude.
the girl disappeared after this and the rest of the show there were no
other interruptions.
so our opinion of the "gorrila's" changed during the show from finding
them absolutely abnoxious to actually great guys who were just doing
their jobs.
i talked briefly to matt (tourmanager) after the show asking him if it
was at all possible for them to inform the venues before each concert
about the taping policy, so that we would not have to deal with security
guards trying to get us out of the audience again (they did try, but i
did not move an inch as i had the perfect spot deadcenter frontrow).
also matt would not be bothered each show himself by people of the venue
checking with him (after catching me doing recordigs) wether i am
telling the truth or not.
anyway, i have to catch up to some sleep as i have not really slept
since the concert (been travelling back home instead).
i will post some more when i am fully awake again.
oh btw. i am almost done with editing the dublin show from last night
and i recon it will be on my website by tomorrow night

the review is in dutch, are there any dutchies on this list who aren't
following the girls around like now and can translate it?
translation:
date : 03/08/2002=20
title : artists fraternize on folk festival dranouter=20

the indigo girls share during their hit 'closer to fine' the stage with
sarah bettens from k's choice and liam o'maonlai and fiachna o'broainain
from hothouse flowers. with this unique fraternization this friday night
all headliners of that day on the folk fest in dranouter where
unexpectedly together on stage. despite of the rain that teased the
festival that friday night, the camping places were already very full.
in the pre-sales about twenty percent more people bought a ticket then
last year. then dranouter received an average of 25.000 folk lovers each
day. (photo by ludo mari=ebn.
hope this helps ;-)

howdy guys,
this is more a request for individuals on the list but
it does involve the ig so anyway.
first, would the lady-i believe your name was
barb?-who offered to send me the bumper stickers
please email me offlist? i'd really like to get ahold
of you! : )
next, scott, just wanted to check in on the ig tape
you so kindly put together, if you could email me
privately and lemme know how yer doin', it would make
my day!!
continuing on, kathrin, sadly i don't have your email
on hand or i wouldn't have to use the list for this,
but would you mind emailing me privately about the
radio show the girls did some time ago where they
picked the songs? i wanted a boot since my computer
connection isn't great at all for just downloading.
finally! someone just mentioned that they taped the
"poetry in motion" uk show where the girls did
readings between songs and were putting it on their
site. again, my computer doesn't agree too much with
that format and i'm hopin' someone would be willin' to
get my a boot of it, and i'd be willing to do a b&p or
trade, since i have a fairly nice boot collection.
ok, sorry to do that to ya'll onlist but i haven't
been able to keep track of people as well as i'd like
to! peace and love and thanks for putting up with this!

hi everyone,
just finished watching the televised highlights of the cambridge folk
festival on tv and can report that they only showed one song by the
girls...yes, you guessed it...closer to fine, with alison brown (banjo
player extroadinaire). no interviews and no other coverage. typical, i
guess for british tv. just a shame that despite the girls being the
headliners of the sunday show, that's all the coverage they get. the
other artists that evening each got 2 songs. but hey, shouldn't
complain, the girls were on tv!

we were pretty p***ed about that too. no interview, and only one song. but at least it was the ig anthem (for me anyway). i was also ticked off that they only showed one song by the dubliners. alison brown is a kick ass banjo player, i'm very pleased with the coverage that she got. as for the girls, you're so right, it could have been worse. ye cannae grumble.
