mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

hi all!
just in case some of you still want to get the mp3s i am currently
serving on my site (bremen, hamburg and mountain stage shows from
this year):
they are going offline on sunday and are going to be replaced by the
recent cambridge, edinburgh and union chapel shows plus the
much requested "on the tracks" radio interview show, which is every
bit as good as amy made it sound to be in her comments on the official
site (
http://www.indigogirls.com/photos/amycam/2002-05-04ac- 03.html <http://www.indigogirls.com/photos/amycam/2002-05-04ac-03.html>).
the three uk shows are brought to you courtesy of claudine who
booted them and did the cover and liner artwork, which will be
available for download too.
the "on the tracks" interview was taped by that off list friend of mine,
who said to say hi to y'all: so, hi;)! artwork for that has yet to be
created by lil me, i usually don't upload my artwork for the shows but
will prolly do this time just in order to be more consistent;).
maybe people who are downloading the stuff can drop me a line
whether they'd always like there to be cd cover artwork available or
not? that would be very helpful:).
anyhoo, happy downloading and i'll post again once the new stuff is up
on sunday.
the link for the mp3 downloads is:
<http://www.indigogirls.de/downloads>

be well,
kathrin

mime-version: 1.0

i bought some tickets for a co-worker and it turns out that she and her
partner can't go. so i have two tickets to the schenectady show at
proctor's that are looking for a loving home. i can sell them separately
or together, doesn't matter. they're orchestra right, 3rd row, seats 2 and
4 right on the aisle, emily-side.
let me know in a private email if you're interested. emphasis on the
privately because i have digest.
i'm selling them for the face value of the tickets, $33.00 apiece. postage
is free for regular u.s. mail (because i'm not nitpicky about 32 cents
postage) but if you want them sent certified or otherwise i'll have to tack
on the price for that.
anyway, i'm rambling. they're good seats. if you want them, let me know.
i take paypal (i'll give you info for that) or money order.
mmkay?

let me go compile a list of boots i have, must be close to 100 and then
i will send to those who want to trade.
some are the original list compilations that use to go around 5 or 6
years ago plus a few cd's don (thanks !!) burned for me of the early
recordings.
lots of old radio shows and interviews..vintage stuff.
thanks all for your response and i'll get back to you as soon as i drag
the boxes out from under the bed.
(thanks sabrina, i'll pick up those cd-r's this weekend)
also if any of the old "big list" folks are still around ( sus? joni?
kate? kerri, deb. tim? miz caroline from out west, etc etc etc. drop me
a line. i'd love to catch up)
thanks again all
and..for those who need the "old stuff" and haven't found it anywhere,
as soon as i get back in the swing of things i'd be happy to dub tapes
for you( sorry, they are on cassettes but the quality is good) as a
welcome back gesture

hi pooh,
just right click on your mouse and go to save target as you will download it
to your harddrive as mp3 file. i'm sure someone here can help you out with
an url for free mp3 players for your computer.

here's a promo i found on the wire tonight for an
article coming in sunday's ny times magazine. it will
be interesting to see who else they highlight in the
article....deb
nytmag-folkmusic-lesbians =97 the number of female
performers in folk who are openly lesbian, bisexual or
actively pro-gay has been rising in recent years and
seemingly at a higher rate than in other styles of
music. the music festivals, concert halls and clubs
have rosters full of artists who are lesbian or widely
recognized as gay-friendly: melissa etheridge, ani
difranco, k.d. lang, the indigo girls, nanci griffith,
holly near, janis ian and dozens more. lesbians have
had such success in acoustic music that more than one
female performer has been charged with posing as a
lesbian to exploit the market =97 and some men in the
field have begun to talk of feeling alienated. by

amazing...

------forwarded message--------
prior to today, i had never heard of michelle
mayfield. apparently she is a musician who is (was) up
and coming and had acquired a rather large gay/lesbian
fan base. her heterosexual fans were unhappy with the
public displays of outwardly gay behavior at her
shows, so ms. mayfield felt inclined to write the
following email to her "friends and fans." following
her email, is a response from one very angry lesbian.
please do your best to keep this email circulating and
feel free to email ms. mayfield with your thoughts at
michellemayfield@hotmail.com.

the letter from michelle:
a letter to my fans; date: mon, 12 aug 2002
dear fans and friends,
first of all, i want to thank all of you for your
continued support of me and my music. i have enjoyed
the past year and am very excited about what is in my
future. however, there is a situation that has been
brought to my attention that needs to be addressed.
at the present time, within my fanbase there is a
significant group of people who have alternate sexual
preferences. please know that i appreciate my fanbase
no matter who or what they are - i, in no way, shape,
or form am complaining. however, as an artist, i am
continually wanting to expand that fanbase - to
mothers and fathers, to college students, to
teenagers, etc. i honestly believe my music has the
appeal to be able to do that. it is not only important
to me personally, but it is imperative for my future ~
record executives are looking for artists with an
established and significant following - they don't do
very many "developmental" deals these days.
however, i have had several complaints from bar
owners, friends, fans, and potential fans regarding
the outwardly show of affection that has taken place
at my shows. this type of behavior, right or wrong,
reflects on me as the artist who has brought you to
that club. let me give you some examples:
1) i have several friends who will not ask their
families, friends, or coworkers to shows because of
this behavior and the potential negative reflection
that may be projected upon them as fans of mine.
2) a gentleman from a show at "the six of clubs" made
a comment in the men's bathroom, "what's going on here
tonight? i thought this was a straight bar."
as an artist, i want to be known for my music. it is
very important to me to not be stereotyped,
pidgeonholed, or categorized in a way that will
alienate anyone from listening or coming to see my
shows. i do not want to become a melissa etheridge or
a patrice pike (although i love them both and respect
them very much as artists) - most people don't think
about their music first.....they think of their sexual
orientation - whether right or wrong, that's the way
it is. whether i am straight or gay, it is no one's
business in the first place and i, personally, am not
open to making that anyone's business. it should be
about the music...period.
i cannot control the behavior of anyone, however, i am
respectfully asking all of you as fans and friends to
please be respectful of what i am trying to accomplish
as an artist. please be respectful of the places where
i am performing by being aware of the actions that can
possibly turn potential fans away from my music or
from my future shows. i want everyone to feel
comfortable coming to my shows - and from what i've
been told, people are not comfortable because of this
behavior. if this means you cannot continue to support
me or come to my future show! s, then i will
understand and respect that decision. i appreciate
your support up until this time.
i sincerely hope you will understand the purpose of
this letter and will respect my request.
thanks for your continued support ~
michelle
the response:
an open letter to michelle mayfield 8.13.2002
hi, michelle: i got a copy of your note written to
your friends and fans asking that your gay and lesbian
fans, the "significant group of people who have
alternate sexual preferences," do their best to hide
their sexual orientation when they come to hear you
perform.
you say that you are worried for your heterosexual
fans who might be subject to "the potential negative
reflection that may be projected upon them as fans of
mine" if people realize you've got a lot of queer
fans.
gosh, i'm sure it must be hard on you to have to deal
with "the outwardly show of affection that has taken
place" at your shows and all those badly behaved
lesbians and gay men. all those dykes humping each
other's legs to the rhythm of your music and whatnot;
it must be terrible. so, just to show you how
concerned i am about this awful situation, me and my
friends doing everything we can to make sure that all
the queer-acting folks stay away from your shows in
order to make sure that your squeamish heterosexual
fans feel okay about being there. in fact, i'll even
work on convincing the queer-acting people who do go
to your shows to make sure that everyone in the venue
knows they are *not* a fan of yours. that should make
you really happy.
how are we going to do this? first, we'll send out the
e-mail to everyone we know, so they get the idea. then
we'll also send it to e-mail groups, like austingrrls,
sublimeaustin, austinfeminists and the now lists and
other gay and lesbian lists around the state. i'll
even make sure to send it to aggie pride, the gay and
lesbian list for former a&m students, since, like you,
i'm a graduate of texas a&m (class of '91. whoop!) and
aggies like to help each other out, right? and i'll
make sure to put a link to it on my website.
but we might miss a few people if we just rely on the
internet, so we'll send your letter out to
publications that gay and lesbian people read, like
the texas triangle, the houston voice, the austin
chronicle, the dallas voice, ambush, and whatever else
we can track down. we'll also make sure to contact
radio stations that gay people listen to, like kgsr
and klbj and mix 94.7, and get them to make sure they
play your music less during the dayparts in which they
have gay and lesbian listeners, thus making it less
likely that queers will come to your shows. i'm not
sure how effective this will be in keeping all those
queer-acting people out of your shows, but i think it
should work pretty well, since most of these people,
like me, think it is "very important ... to not be
stereotyped, pidgeonholed, or categorized" as someone
who should be forced to hide who they are so as not to
project "negative" associations on the people they are
standing next to at a club. in fact, most of the
people who see this will never come to your shows or
buy your albums or say anything nice about you to
anyone again once they see the bigoted and insulting
e-mail you sent out to your "fans and friends."
and, you're right, it would suck for you to have the
success of melissa etheridge. what the hell were we
thinking?
another ironic tidbit of information that you might be
interested to know is that if you go to ms. mayfield's
website and view her available cds, you'll see that
she has a live cd on which she covers various artists.
strangely enough, #8 is melissa etheridge's "like the
way i do."

hi all!
never thought i'd have an ig moment at work... but had one a week or
two ago.
we are currently promoting a dvd/cd release called "1 giant leap" and
it turns out that ulali of shaming of the sun fame have contributed to
it.
it's a wonderful project by two musicians, who set out on a journey
around the world meeting up with all sorts of interesting people, not
only musicians and collaborated with them. basically giving them a mic
and recording their input to songs right then and there.
their goal was to "explore the unity in the diversity".
anyhoo, other participants are michael stipe and eddi reader
(download her song "dear john" if you get the chance, love that one),
for example.
so, if you wanna check out ulali's part of the project you can see the
video to their song here (they do backing vocals and co-wrote it, main
artist is speech though, i think he was with arrested development):

hey all, this recent lurker has now posted twice in 2 days!
a few days ago i had in indigo dream. its nice, its been years :)
my gf and i were being given a tour of an alternative sort of theater. then
the tour guide started talking about shakespere (alternative, eh?), and then
amy showed up (or i just noticed her) and started to have a discussion w/ my
gf about the use of water in hamlet. my gf was an english major and has
written papers about ophelia, so at least that part makes sense!!

i got this from the ferrick list, an interesting article about folk music
(deb posted the promo some days ago) :
<http://www.nytimes.com/2002/08/18/magazine/18folk.html?ex=1030624475&ei=1&en>
=2666f89b3129d981
queer as folk
by david hajdu
at some point in most of her concerts, christine lavin goes looking for a
man. a singer-songwriter prominent in the folk-music circuit for more than a
decade, lavin is a drolly impish performer with a flair for the theatrical.
she affixes a miner's light on her head, steps offstage and roams around the
audience in search of the best-looking man in the house. ''the interesting
thing to me,'' she says, ''is that i'll be looking for a man, and i'll have
the light on, and i'll see 20 women, and i'll see one man in the whole
section.'' the audience for artists like lavin, like that of folk music in
general, is predominantly female and increasingly gay.
[snip]
the rise of gay women in folk music is difficult to
quantify; all those female faces at concerts by women
folksingers is no more proof of a lesbian phenomenon than
arenas full of boys at metallica shows means that all
heavy-metal fans are gay. however, the number of female
performers in folk who are openly lesbian, bisexual or
actively pro-gay has been rising in recent years and
seemingly at a higher rate than in other styles of music.
the music festivals, concert halls and clubs have rosters
full of artists who are lesbian or widely recognized as
gay-friendly: melissa etheridge, ani difranco, k.d. lang,
the indigo girls, nanci griffith, holly near, janis ian,
tret fure, melissa ferrick, toshi reagon, jill sobule,
cheryl wheeler, patty larkin and dozens more. according to
ellen friedman, who runs a boston-area booking agency with
her lesbian partner, the proportion of gay women in folk is
''much, much greater'' than in other musical genres ''and
expanding constantly.''
lesbians have had such success in acoustic music that more
than one female performer has been charged with posing as a
lesbian to exploit the market -- and some men in the field
have begun to talk of feeling alienated. others in folk
circles, while acknowledging the right of gay women to play
any music they like, express concern that folk, by
definition the most inclusive of musics, might be becoming
too insular, if not restrictive, and it has all happened
with so little public notice that some of those at the
heart of the matter are struggling to come to terms with
it. ''i think of the number of gay folk musicians i know,
and it's amazing,'' says amy ray of the indigo girls. ''and
i think of people like dar williams and ani difranco --
they're not gay, but they have a big gay following. what is
it about folk music that appeals to gay women? i'd like to
know.''
pamela means, a young biracial woman living in boston,
writes stark, defiant songs about race and lesbianism. on a
saturday evening in july, means was scheduled to perform in
the 9 to 10 o'clock slot at the living room, a publike folk
venue on the lower east side of manhattan. the room was
full. ''she has a good following here,'' the bartender
said, beaming. by 9:20, means had not yet arrived, and the
fellow scheduled to play at 10, carl mullen, was asked to
take the microphone. he sang and played the guitar well,
though the house began to thin. around 9:45, the manager
announced that means had fallen ill and would not be
arriving, and nearly a third of the audience, all women,
left. mullen shifted to rock 'n' roll songs in panic. ''i
don't know what we'd do without the lesbians,'' the
bartender said, watching the exodus. ''without them, i
don't know what we'd do.''
a few decades ago, things were different. ''the folk clubs
were nothing like they are today,'' amy ray recalls.
''lesbians were no more welcome in folk than we were
anywhere else. other musicians didn't want us there, and
the audience didn't make us feel very welcome.''

hi all!
so, the london show (with poetry readings and all) and the edinburgh
show are now available on my site.
they were recorded by claudine and she was sweet enough to let me
put them up on my site for everyone to download.
the "on the tracks" radio interview is still being edited. i will upload
that and the cambridge show in 2 weeks.
sorry, i can't do it sooner but since i have to take the london and
edinburgh show off when i put new stuff up, you'll have these two
weeks to do all your downloading:).
i might offer an fserve on irc in order to constantly have all the shows
i have available for everyone.
but the download speed would be considerably slower there, so i'm not
sure how good an idea that is.
anyhoo, have fun downloading and listening.
be well,
kathrin

i know i've had this conversation before. y'all can come over and we'll add

indigo fun.
of course, they'd be missing out on a ton of merch. sales, but i'm sure it

i have to close this offer -- i took way more than anticipated and in
order to return cds in a timely manner, i'm closing it down for now.
those who haven't sent me the trades they promised for my earlier
offers (and there are several of you) please send them or at least get in
touch with me. i don't want to have to put you on my "bad trader" list, k?
likewise, if i owe anyone anything, please let me know.
thanks!
