the girls played my hometown last night, and despite the rainy weather it was an
excellent concert. amy came out to introduce the opening act and thanked us for
braving the weather "we need the rain". like a lot of places, there has been a
drought here (and of course the weather chooses to break the drought just in
time for the ig concert). she also said she was surprised when they drove in
that they'd be playing a corporate park. then she got to the town park section
and saw the swans on the lake and the venue in the woods. amy also commented
on how nice the place was, and the last time they played the area was out at
walnut creek(a large shed venue at the southeast edge of raleigh). she also
introduced sulli as a hometown girl (and i think she said something about going
to her mom's house). amy also commented about how a boyfriend(i'm guessing
that was a long time ago) of her's moved away to cary.

it was just amy and emily as an "acoustic duo". they played many songs from
"become you", and many from "swamp ophelia". "the wood song" was
especially enjoyable. emily said they were doing an old song - when did
"swamp ophelia" become old? '94 was 8 years ago, time is going by too fast :)
to me an "old" song of their's is "strange fire" or "love's recovery", and really
old ones would be "crazy game" or "nashville".

regency park has hosted the north carolina symphony "summerfest" concerts
for years in a tented stage "in the woods" setting. people would spread out blankets,
bring chairs, and picnic before and then during the show. it is a tradition to be quiet and
allow others to enjoy the music instead of hearing clanking and chattering (like the
extremely noisy chastain park in atlanta). the new amphitheater venue has just started
hosting other concerts (willie nelson, tony bennett, etc.), and the tradition is hanging
around. the crowd was pretty rowdy by usual standards - singing along is not something
you do with the symphony (unless requested by the conductor). i'm sure that without
the rain it would have been livelier also.

anyone from the list at the madison wi dar williams show at the barrymoore
theatre last night? possibly the best show i've ever seen. she gets so into
her music. there were three encores and she had some really cool guests;
peter mulvey and matt someone--matt is a classical cellist who is making
waves by playing the folk circuit right now. he is amazing. at the end of her
show she came back out on stage and said, "when i wear these pants i always
worry that you can see my underpants and then i was thinking, maybe when i
come on stage everyone could chant underpants! underpants! and then maybe,
soemtime in the future you might all get confused and like maybe president
bush would be in town and all of you would see him and chant underpants!
underpants. it would be a way to be patriotic for the country but not
necessarily for bush."
i just thought she was so great and isince i am no longer on the dar list
(soooo many posts) i thought i'd share here.
if you want any more details about the show e-mail me privately.

wow. sounds like a great show. i really like dar too.
was the other special guest matt brubeck (sp?)? if so, he has played with
the girls a few times (mostly on virginia woolf and chickenman) here on the
west coast. he is originally from berkeley (california). really talented.
i'd love to hear him play to dar's music.

yes, as others have noted, it was a good, but sleepy concert.
since i was unable to get tickets up front (and with the threat of heavy
rain), i opted instead for the reserved table seats in the rear, under the
cover.
the rain was never that bad, and while it was nice to recline in the back,
the venue was much too large for the acoustic set.
the only real advantage to being in the back was that i could get up to
dance to shame on you and closer to fine and not bother anyone behind me!
(and only a few strange looks from the person with me)
we did work our way up to the front of the lawn for the first encore, kid
fears, then rushed the stage for galileo (i looked around for you susan, but
didn't spot you).
i managed to get 2 picks and then a set list from the sound board (thanks
michelle!). the set list actually says it's from dublin on 8/8, but they
may have changed a couple of things:
get out the map
become "sue"
power of "sue"
shame on "sue"
collecting "sue"
yield
mystery
three hits (i don't remember them playing this, did they?)
closer to fine
johnny rottentale (yep, i recognized this from amy's tour last year -- she
was really jamming on it, but not getting much feedback from the audience)
deconstruction
gone again
least complicated
starkville
woodsong
reunion
she's saving me (ghost was crossed out)
chickenman (with a medley of bitter root at the end)
------------
"?" on set list (kid fears played)
galileo
(i'm not sure what the inside joke was with all the "you" and "two" words
being crossed out and replaced with "sue" -- maybe they knew you were coming
susan! :-)
it was nice to hear some of the acoustic songs like mystery (one of my
favorites! -- i love the line "my heart the red sun, your heart the moon
clouded") and wood song (though i too wondered when wood song became an
"old" song!! :-) and all the new songs on become you continue to grow on
me... (no "moment of forgiveness" tonight though).
some songs lose a little punch without the band behind them (shame on you,
chickenman), and i have to say, i kinda liked the rocked-out version of
power of two that they did on the suffragette sessions tour.
all in all, a good show, but it could have been better in a smaller venue,
with a livelier crowd. not to complain though -- it is nice to see them
acoustic without the band on occasion (and close to home now too!).
i also was able to pick up the red t-shirt with the frog prince on it (like
i really need another ig shirt!) -- earlier in the summer at the virginia
beach show, they didn't have any regular t-shirts in my size with that
design.
did anybody go to the biltmore show in asheville? if it hadn't been sold
out, i considered road-tripping (in the middle of the night :-) out there.
enjoy their swing back through new england and elsewhere!

for those who are interested....here's an alert i received from the anti
war committee in minneapolis...please come....as you will read the
matter is time dated and very urgent.

<welfarerightsmn@yahoo.com>
on friday, sept. 6, george w. bush is coming to the twin cities to
promote
the awful republican welfare plans. the welfare rights committee will
be there to protest. we don't yet know the time or place, but this is
our chance to say no to throwing more families into the streets!
this is everyone's chance to demand that bush put human needs ahead of
corporate and military greed!
we will let everyone know the time and place when it is announced.
background:
the entire u.s. welfare system is up for "reauthorization" this year.
that means that the money and the rules are up for grabs. bush and the
republican house have passed their plans; the senate has not passed its
plan. they all have to be done by sept. 30.
despite the current economic downturn, bush's plan calls for no increase
in welfare funding; impossible to meet employment requirements (even
skilled workers are having a tough time finding jobs now); more attacks
on immigrants, keeping the time limit on welfare; 100% full family
sanctions; and a sickeningly sexist "marriage promotion" scheme.

i don't know if i was melissa, but if i was, i do apologize if i in any way caused you problems in seeing. i never want to assume *everyone* can or should stand up,. but i do think it's pretty reasonable that those of us in the front row can stand up if we feel so inclined. i am obsessive about front row tickets for a reason: it's the only way i can feel relatively sure i won't bother anyone since usually *most* of us in the front (first five rows or so) are standing and therefore we don't impede each other's viewing.
but, i probably was the one standing in front of you because i was literally the only person standing for 75% of the show. how was asheville? same?

in a tv news "experiment" that seemingly has more in common with big brother
than with serious investigative journalism, wfld, the fox-owned station in
chicago, is planning to lock up five openly gay persons and five homophobic
ones in a house for seven days this month and videotape their encounters. the
footage will be edited for broadcast during the station's 9:00 p.m. newscast
during the november sweeps. titled "experiment in gay and straight," the
series is intended "to confront some of the misunderstandings, fears and
concerns that straight and gay people have," according to a wfld statement.
commenting on the station's announcement, chicago sun-times radio-tv columnist
robert feder said today (tuesday) "sounds more like an exploitative ratings

say it ain't so! a tv station exploiting something for ratings???
especially during sweeps month.
overall, i'd say this is really bullbleep, and, besides the ratings
ploy, is just another lame attempt at so-called journalistic "balance." *hey,
we gotta have the straight point of view...* it's such a joke. if you were to
have someone on a public affairs program talking about, perhaps, the attempt
to make some hispanic holiday a national holiday, you'd not see a need to
balance that with some racist organization. but too many of these tv types
think you cannot do a program about gay people without offering up the "other
side."

say it ain't so! a tv station exploiting something for ratings??? especially during sweeps month.
overall, i'd say this is really bullbleep, and, besides the ratings ploy, is just another lame attempt at so-called journalistic "balance." *hey, we gotta have the straight point of view...* it's such a joke. if you were to have someone on a public affairs program talking about, perhaps, the attempt to make some hispanic holiday a national holiday, you'd not see a need to balance that with some racist organization. but too many of these tv types think you cannot do a program about gay people without offering up the "other side."

this is *not* reality tv (arguably, there is probably no such thing?) - it is straightforwardly cynical, lets-jump-on-the-bandwagon, ratings-hungry exploitation! but i think it's a must-have for a ph.d on the subject  - best of luck, garian!

quick - everyone - pick your "label" gay or straight - because -
obvisiously - there is no real option such as bisexuality, transexuality or
what have you...
i got another great idea for a tv show - five wheelchair users and five
people who are afraid of people inb wheelchairs - oh - did i fail to
mention the majority (including myself) of wheelchair users are part time -
meaning - on most days, most people wouldn't even know i owned one.
feeling that our society is fastly becoming some wierd jerry springer show...
btw - this is not to be homophobic in anyway...

i agree that these prices are way too high. i can
remember though when pre-ebay it wasn't uncommon to see
club r&r at a few online collector sites for $75 to
$100. as much as some people hate ebay, i for one love
it because it has brought the pricing down on some
items that aren't quite as rare as everyone thought and
i've found items on there that i probably never
would've found otherwise.

this got me thinking about a conversation topic. what
is your most prized indigo girls collectible? it can be
something that's rare or something that has special
meaning for a particular reason. i have a few things
that mean a lot to me because of sentimental reasons,
but probably the most commercially collectible item i
have is my bus sign. i have one of those long
advertisements that go on the side of the big city
buses that is an ad for kmtt radio in seattle. it has
the mountain logo on it, the words "mountain climbers :
indigo girls" and a big picture of amy & emily. i
believe the dimensions are 12 feet long & 4 or 5 feet
high. it's actually just one big sticker.

hmmm. what a good question. i don't even know what my most collectible ig
item is...although my favorite piece of memoribilia by far is an ig
sweatshirt i got at my first ig show in like 1992. i still wear it. its a
simple ash gray shirt with "indigo girls" in blue varsity letters across the
front.

my favorite is my cons poster which i got from my friends record store. it
was the first poster he put up when he opened. it had a few "bad" spots that
i repaired with an indigo mini collage of sorts. probably not worth much, but
its my favorite. its framed in my livingroom.

i bought a $10 t-shirt on the $10 tour (a white shirt with the alice in
wonderland picture and quote). i wore it out, and it's now been
downgraded to a rag and pretty soon it will be nothing but holes. i
loved that conert! we saw them in chicago at the metro, and you could
see how much they loved playing there. i only wish we had stuck around
and gone to smart bar afterwards (downstairs) to see amy brooding at the
bar. (hmmm - amy brooding)

it has got to be the crazy game single that is autographed by amy and emily,
that i got through their website a couple years back. although i realize it
is not unique or rare, it's probably the thing i have that is "most
collectible".
my favorite collectible item is: the cool black and white photo of them
(you know which one i'm talking about; they are both slickly dressed, emily
in her dark jacket and light-colored shirt, and amy in her reminscent of
70's shirt, head and upper body photograph standing in some street against
the backdrop of a brick wall--this is from memory, by the way, since i'm in
california right now, instead of harrisburg). i actually bordered the
picture with lyrics from some of my favorite songs, and put different fonts
and colors on some of my favorite words. for example, in strange fire, the
lyric: "mercenaries of the shrine now who are you to speak for god, with
haughty eyes and lying tongues, hands that shed innocent blood", i put the
word innocent in red.
one of these days i will scan it for y'all to view. i made it during the
cons tour, and it greets me when i walk in from work every day. just a
little reminder not to let the spirit die.
diane

i can't say what my favorite collectible is.....oh, i like the cold beer
and remote control promo
cd......it's really nice, it's a full length cd with the interviews that
were used for live at the fillmore, ozilline, and gone again, peace
tonight, and shame on you.
i love it because i found it at kfai's annual used cd sale
fundraiser....ifound that, and go
single, although i could only afford one i still consider my treasure a
gold mine!
kfai is a community radio station, it's my favorite, and i'd always
promised myself every year i'd go, and something would always come up.
so when my friend, mark asked me to go, i jumped at the oppertunity...
the sale was a madhouse with hundreds nearly clawing their way
in......just getting a look at their selection meant resorting to
desperate measures.
but i can't wait for the next sale!
peace

oh,yes and i also have my autographed poster
from first avenue sst 1998, one of the stage crew took it back and got
it autographed, and told me that the girls would be coming out soon,
they found a friend they hadn't seen in five years, and so that's why
they weren't out yet. i understood that, so i waited to meet them
outside. and i got to meet both of them, they were really nice.
and i thought about laminating it, but the printer
said that after a piece like that is laminated the value goes down
because no one else would be able to test it to see if it was real or a
forgery.
soooooo, anywho,i framed it, and bought a
nice black posterboard and a really big frame,
so that it looks matted, and it's surrounded
by other ig articles, and my ticket stubs.
and don't worry i am never going to sell it, or give it away! it's
mine!!!!! all mine ha ha ha haaaaaah. (insert a wicked laugh.)

my tape that i somehow misplaced of 4/22/94 - unh - my best friend died
that week and emily dedicated "ghost"- by name to him - with a very cool
listee's help
- the promo of swamp that amy gave me the same night - that helped me
survive the dark days after losing him.
- i have a lot of ig memorablia - all the stuff people want - i dunno - i
guess some of the pics i have of them - and a flyer amy signed on solo tour
are my fave stuff, but i also want to hand print my photos (color darkroom

but even my horrid sounding - analog - rainy newport - first ig show tape

i had to post about this as i am curious about what others think is the best
way to handle celebrity sightings. to put things in perspective, the hubby
and i were vacationing in fantastic san francisco for labor day. we are
shopping on market st and stop into this food court style pizza place.
hubby spots amazingly talented nanci griffith (whom we love) sitting alone.
we knew she was playing in carmel the next day. anyway it was this huge
deal figuring out what to do. i mean we didn't want to run up and accost
her, yet also felt just doing nothing would have led to heavy duty regrets
later. so my clever self decided we would sit by her but say nothing until
she got up to leave so as not to appear stalker like and also to not disturb
her while eating. we're eating, she's eating..she catches me glancing over
a few times but all appears harmless. she was kind enough to tell us our
table was free when we sat down. she's getting up to leave and hubby
says--hi nanci and begins the whole--we're really big fans and saw you in
chicago a few weeks ago blah blah. she smiled politely but was clearly not
ready for further banter. her look made me feel like she did indeed feel we
were stalkers who sat down by her to stare at her and see what kind of
spices she likes on her pizza. she walked away quickly. i felt horrible
and like we had ruined a potential moment and her day.
with ig, there have been some similar sightings but never so easy. i mean
how would you handle sitting down in burger king and seeing amy chomping
away alone on a whopper. i spent the entire day wondering how i could have
approached it differently. i know the option to just not say anything and
leave her alone was there but who could really do that. suggestions? past
experiences? you're too kind--greg

i too had a similar experience. to make a long story short, last christmas
i was shopping at best buy in ga. i heard a familiar voice to my right as
we walked in the door. i see amy talking to a guy but sort of putting the
cart between herself and the guy. i had seen her around in a couple of
bars/shows in atlanta before but this was broad daylight. ;) my fiance
wanted me to go and talk with her too but i just couldn't. i noticed later
that she broke away from said guy and was shopping for dvd players...maybe??
i almost bumped into her again looking at music dvds but i just didn't have
the nerve. i knew she must have been shopping for presents. seeing how she
probably doesn't have a lot of time, i just didn't want to intrude.
hopefully, she appreciated that (i'm sure she has some sort of radar of
people watching her)....because i really wanted to just say hi.

i'd have to say my favorite thing from my ig collection is a picture of amy
that i found at a record show years ago. while looking at pictures of
musical artist, i found one of amy, so i bought it. after taking it home and
looking at it closer, i noticed she was wearing a bracelet i gave her a few
years before when i was front row at one of their concerts. i was freaking
out to see her actually wearing it. then about a year later, i caught up
with her at one of their show's and asked her to sign the picture. i told
her the story with the picture and bracelet, and she was very cool and said
she loved that bracelet. made my year. and it still makes me smile
everytime i look at the picture.

well, i think it's really hard to leave them alone, but i think they
really appreciate it if you do. so i'd say eye contact and a big, beaming
smile, followed by a hasty retreat, would be the best thing you could do.
they'll know. if you are capable of winking w/out looking dorky, that
would probably be ok too.
not that i've ever run into a celebrity outside of a gushing-approved
setting.

hi abby!
well, they've been successfully added to the list of artists that furthur
allows sharing files of. but like with kazaa the people who have the
files need to be online, when you do a search, in order for you to be
able to download from them.
i've looked into sharing my files on there (i have only webspace for like
2 or 3 shows on my site, www.indigogirls.de/downloads.html <http://www.indigogirls.de/downloads.html> but have
more stuff) but since it doesn't let me check how far along people's
downloads from me are, it doesn't really make that much sense to me
(don't want to cut off people's downloads by having to go offline to burn
cds or do some real life stuff or whatever;)). and also, the download
speed from my website is much much faster than the one you'd get
when you download something on furthur from me.
as for the searching for files on furthur:
if you just go to "search", then choose the file format (choose mp3....
shn is a special format that creates much bigger files, so would take
longer to download) and choose the band. you can specify your search
some more but with ig, i'd just leave it at that at the moment, because
there's not so much there most of the time anyway and this way you
get furthur to show you everything it finds on ig.
hope that helped.
be well,
kathrin

you rush over, knock the burger from her hand and call the paramedics -- amy
eating meat is a suicide attempt and a clear cry for help!
--
if you see somebody in a restaurant, you could nod and smile with recognition
from a distance if you catch their eye. you should definitely wait until
they've finished eating before going over to talk to them -- your going over
will draw attention from the entire room and open it up for other people to go
over and speak as well, so you want to make sure that you don't ruin their
meal -- ideally, after they've finished and are waiting for the check or
something. you should leave before they do so if it's the kind of celeb who
would be worried about being followed.
celebs also don't like it if you interrupt them when they're out doing things
with their families. but if you ran into amy shopping at best buy, seems like
you could go over and have a quiet pretty normal conversation. they're going to
key off of your vibe so the less freaked out you are about what a big deal it
is, the more comfortable they'll be with you.
there's no way for you to know whether or not they're in a hurry or that
you've caught them at a good time or a bad time, so you have to take your chance
to speak to them when you have it. they're a celebrity so being recognized in
public comes with the deal.

hey y'all,
even though it's not especially interesting, the ig collectible that's
probably dearest to me is a least complicated maxi single, with acoustic
versions of dead man's hill and mystery on it. it was given to me by my dad's
wife back before i even owned swamp ophelia (which was, at the time, the only
ig album yet released that i didn't have) and was terribly vexed to find that
her gift was, in fact, not a full-length cd. but i was really pleased with
it, and to this day prefer the acoustic version os mystery to the album track.
my other favorite collectible is a copy of the original strange fire lp,
which i found in a record store in ardmore. looking at the front (and the
$10 price tag) i thought "ha ha, wouldn't it be funny if this were the
pre-epic release.." and then i turned it over to look at the track listing.
ha ha.
as for celeb sightings, there's an old story that trickled down through the
annals of bryn mawr... a few students were in atlanta one spring break and
saw amy jogging along the road. the driver recognized her, and neither wished
to let the opportunity slip by... but nor did she wish to be annoying. so she
pulled over and asked amy for directions :)

hey...
so it's just common sense and politeness, really. at a show artists are
going to be more accessable than at the grocery store. if some random
stranger approaches me a lot will depend on my mood, my schedule, and how
they approach me. i'm sure it's the same for anyone else :)
mostly, i've ignored some 'famous' people because i didn't have anything
interesting to say. "you're music changed my life" is not only a lie,
they've heard it many, many times. going up to amy and saying something like
"i'm your biggest fan, i have both your records" would at least be kinda
funny (the first time). originality is key, kids.
so yeah, if you're going to say something, try and connect on a deeper
level. to be honest, if i ever got into an in-depth conversation with amy
i'd probably either start arguing about some of her politics, or talking
about other artists, like the jam or daemon stuff.
oh, for a celebrity's view of such meetings, take a peep here:
<http://www.stormwrestling.com/commentary/default.asp?aid=1197>
you just have to substitute 'wrestler' for singer. yes, shut up - wrestling
is my secret shame. what's yours?

i think the best bet is to try and remain low key...i know that i have,
in the past, been a bit *too* excited and done the whole gush thing,
and it only comes across as not weird about half the time. i think it
is best to play it by ear; most of the people we consider celebrities
(i.e. the indigo girls, butchies, etc) probably don't get recognized a
lot, and it is probably incredibly weird for them to have their
"famousness" thrust into their faces.
just my .02...back to lurking now!

three months ago i had open heart surgery and my best
friend wrote a letter to the girls saying how i was a
big fan and yada yada yada. anyway, they sent me an
autographed glossy promo photo from become you, a
t-shirt from the european tour, a little note telling
me to feel better (which was from management and not
the girls directly) and a ticket and backstage pass
for when they played here in atlanta. unfortunately i
couldn't go to the concert since it was only a week
and a half after the surgery but i would have to say
that those items mean the most to me. it was so sweet
of them to do that. recovering from open heart
surgery isn't exactly the most fun thing to do and
when i got that package it made me feel ten times
better.
