> last night in providence was just fabulous. first off, lets give (as amy says in her cutest white girl twang) props to the providence performing arts center-- what a fantastically beautiful venue! from the ornate gilt carvings on the ceiling, to the plush and cushy red velvet seats, to the sweet old folks who seated us in black bowties....truly a great place to see a show (nice acoustics don't hurt either). although it was once again a more 'sedate' crowd than i liked, there seemed to be peaceful coexistence between the dancers and the sitters (for the most part). the set list didn't stray too far from the sets of the last several shows i've seen-- still no drums or bass, sadly, so i think there's only so much variation they can do with that....my brain categorize shows into 'amy songs' and 'emily songs' so here goes my effort:
>
> amy: shame on you, starkville, become you, gone again, devotion, kid fears, moment of forgiveness, chickenman and biterroot...some others i can remember
> emily: deconstruction, get out the map, it's alright, you've got to show, virginia woolf (yay!), she's saving me, power of two...some others i can't remember

the only 2 i remember that aren't listed here are: yield, and an amazing rendition of faye tucker - this is far from a favorite of mine, but the power behind it is outstanding
>
> amy was chattier than usual, and told an especially amusing story about having gone to east greenwich high school that day to talk about 'di-ver-si-teeeee" and noting that these days, the more of a freak you are, the better! she said that when she and emily were in high school, it was all about being as normal as possible...then she stopped herself and sai "if you're normal, that's okay too, that's great too...everyone's great!". it was totally charming.

that was sweet. she added that she hopes her kids will be freaks, or something to that effect
>
> they must have heard my little prayer because they did bust into finlandia with carol at the end of the encore, but it was kind of spoiled at the end when some buffoon yelled out 'god bless america!' as they finished. they both looked pretty dismayed when they walked off stage--who can blame them? you sing this gorgeous song about global unity and peace, and you get bombarded with god bless america. geez.

finlandia was such a blessing. it felt like having someone cover you with a blanket. i couldn't make out what that perosn yelled. i did notice amy grab her speed racer car from on top of the speaker/amp as she walked off stage.

>
> and of course the ultimate highlight was our very own flora brown, baigl extarordinaire, who got invited by amy to come out on stage and talk about the social justice organizations that the concert's proceeds supported. we're so proud a ya, flora! you were amazing!
yes, she seemed very at ease on stage - a great spokesperson!
anyone stick around and see them after the show?

just got home from tonight's show in gilford - it was one
of the best i've been to! i am sure that many more
informational reviews will come out, but i simply must say
it: the whole evening rocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to begin, k's choice was amazing! they both sounded
incredible - it was just sarah & gert (sans band). their
voices meshed so beautifully! whoever does theirm mixing
really did an amazing job. their whole presentation was
beautiful - the lighting, etc. sarah was really thrilled
to have such a positive strong response from the audience.
a & e were shocked to find what they did: an audience of
fans! this group was happy to see the girls, and lauded
praise every single moment. this was one of the loudest
audiences - filling the stage with our rendition of their
music. amy in particular seemed pumped by our energy.
they played so many of the old good ones - it was like a
"best of" show - and all the old stuff sounded fresh and
tweaked. emily was in full blues mode and did a number of
incredible bluesy guitar solos. amy even pulled out r&j
for this crowd. i can't wait to see the set list. i am too
tired to express a lucid rendition of the event, but those
of you going tomorrow night in portland are in for a
treat!! (does any one have any spare tix? i just might
have to take another little road trip - if you do- let me
know!!!)
so- did anyone make a boot of this show- this is an
absolute keeper! including the opening!! please email me
privately if you have a boot from tonight!
enjoy!

i just have to say, just when you think you "the ig can"t possibly be any
better live" then you go to, noho, ppac, meadowbrook,& merril!! i am still
absolutely blown away by all of these shows! we have seen them upwards of
about 30 - 40 times now, and very honestly all of these shows are now in my
top ten ever! i can't really do details, and i not a "set list" person,
although my gf scored 3 from 3 different shows, but i will say that i thought
that meadowbrook also had the most unbelievable setlist! i couldn't believe
that amy did romeo & juliet, i thought i was going out on a stretcher
<g>,from beginning to end it was a great week, and what a way to officially
end the summer!! one other thing i wanted to mention was that before the show
in portland last night, the ex director & the mayor, presented a &e w/ an
award for their outstanding contributions to "making the world a better
place" and they made sept 22, 2002 indigo girls day and presented them w/ a
key to the city! the girls were so overwhelmed, amy cried! it was so cool,
who ever wrote the speech about the girls pre-presentation, really did their
homework, it was beautifully written! it was all just so cool, i am now tired
and dreading going back to work, and i am not certain, but i am trying to
devise a way to squeeze in "just one more show"!
take care,
janet
p.s. i would also again like to apologize for the "you were soooooo gross"
episode!!
i still feel bad!!

hey y'all!
the weirdest thing just happened to me! i was watching a little tv and
happened to catch a small 'home video' documentary by a guy called david
zeiger who followed his teen son' s highschool band for a year.
i was like... 'mmm... this uniform kinda reminds me of something...' well...
it was the decatur high school marching band! amy's old marching band but...
uh... some years later!
what are the odds that i see in france of all places a documentary on
decatur high of all high schools in the us and that they showed a pic of old
bands and i spotted amy!! yes!
wew... had to share... this was just too incredible to keep it to myself! :-)

yes, it was an amazing proclamation that covered all of the great things the
girls have done (lots!), the causes they support, and the joy their music
brings to so many people. very cool!
i have seen ig many times during the past 12 years and i continue to be
floored each time by how good they are, and how their musicianship just gets
better and better. there were so many stellar moments of solo and harmony
vocals. knowing that they'd been touring for months, and had already been
doing a week of back-to-back new england shows, i was afraid their voices
might be showing wear by the time they hit portland but they were 100%
strong. just amazing. some people may have been bummed that the crowd sat
for many of the songs, but i think the reverence that that was shown -- you
could have heard a pin drop during all the ballads -- made up for it. they
always appreciate good listening. acoustics for singing along were great,
too -- merrill auditorium is a beautifully restored theatre.
i didn't keep a list but my favorite moments were a killer version of "it's
alright" near the beginning and the gorgeous "finlandia" a capella closing
with carol isaacs as the third vocal -- amazing. and all the moments when
amy was really grooving and jumping around on stage. ya just gotta love her
bopping around with those braids (and she was wearing the infamous plaid
bondage pants).
okay, i've used the word amazing in each paragraph, i am obviously running
low on creative worshipful adjectives. i'll stop babbling while i'm ahead.
still smiling from last night,

mike,
this is not one of the setlists you requested, but i've been meaning to send
this to the list since the pncbank show of 9/15. this is a review of the
concert i wrote for a good friend who lives in buffalo.

i was in the sixth row, far left. they were great seats. k's choice opened
up. i've seen them open for ig before and was
unimpressed. they were far better this time, and i enjoyed them ok.
the girls came on around 9 and were done just shy of 11. it was cool to see
them with just the woman doing keyboards/accordian/pennywhistle. kind of the
best elements of seeing them solo and with a band.
set list:
gone again
watershed
become you
deconstruction
ozilline
least complicated
yield
power of two
shame on you
our deliverance
take it in stride (the new song, see below)
closer to fine
you've got to show
jonas & ezekial
get out the map
moment of forgiveness
collecting you
chickenman/bitterroot
encores: kid fears
galileo
the keyboardist, carol isaacs, did a lovely job on deconstruction and
started power of two with this beautiful jazzy solo. her organ
playing at the end of kid fears was really spooky. the male singer from k's
choice filled in the stipe vocals for kid fears. he was fine, not stipe, but
fine. carol came running out in the middle of closer to fine to play the
solo on pennywhistle, was not quite on time and started laughing, which made
the girls laugh, too. it was a fun little moment. at the end of the song
emily said something like, "carol, oh carol (giggle). we love carol,
everybody." at that, the audience started cheering and clapping and carol
took a chargined bow.
take it in stride (guessing at the title; it was the most frequently
repeated line in the chorus) was just haunting, sad, and beautiful. it
better go a future album. the lines i wrote down go something like, "ain't
it funny how you lose one day/and a whole lifetime slips away." as much as i
think it will be cool to hear with emily filling in some vocals and guitar,
it was so powerful with just amy and the mandolin.
i cannot express to you the awesomeness of chickenman/bitterroot. first of
all, it is long; it must've gone on for over 15 minutes, with about 5 of
that being this excellent, blue-grassy guitar solo by emily. amy played a
lot with the lyrics on the "i met a man on the highway" part. it is right
after that part that they go into bitterroot and at the end of bitterroot
they go right back to "i went looking for a car..." it was sooooo cool. at
the end, when amy got to the "loved by the sun" she changed it to "loved by
the rain," as it had been raining on and off all day and through part of the
show. i felt so energized after that i couldn't sit still. alas, my cries
for "strange fire" were not heeded. of course, no set list is perfect, and i
did miss starkville, but it was an excellent show.
wendi, thank you once again for the ticket!
tom
"all the carnage of my journeys

hey y'all, long time no post.
due to a freak publicizing accident (don't be alarmed, no tour promoters
were hurt in the skirmish), i've got a whole slew of catie curtis posters on
my hands that i really don't need, tho i could easily wallpaper the bathroom
with all of them. they're heavy, glossy, double sided, color, 11"x17".
side 1 features a head shot of catie and the my shirt looks good on you
album. side 2 is a shot of her on a couch, head cocked to the side, gazing
at some unknown cutie (you?) who's out of the frame.
i was gonna put these up on ebay, but i'm not that technologically advanced,
and besides, i like you guys better. so-- want one? email me and you got
it, completely string-free (cept you pay postage), tho you can kick in some
glitter lipgloss or kitsch or a vinnie's mini tampon case if you want to
repay me for my undying love and generosity and hyperbole.
so. email me now, email me fast. if i get more replies than posters, i'll
determine some random something (priority, as ever, if you're cute and
single). make super sure to put 'catie curtis' somethingorother in the
subject header, because thanks to an email stalker and virus sender, i've
got major spam filters on and your message might get deleted. whoo, gotta
love the internet.
still alive, not kicking quite so hard,
*j

hi all--
i have a huge favor to ask: my only copy (on cassette) of amy ray and the butchies performing a tom petty (that i can't remember at this moment) was lost and i would love to get a .mp3 or cd including that track. my boot collection is pretty limited, but i do have a large selection of compilations on which the ig appear and i would be willing to burn any one of them for anyone able to help me out (i hope this doesn't constitute really bad copyright infringement since most of them are very hard to find anyway). can anyone help me replace my long-lost song??
thanks

just walked in the door from the schenectady show. wow, what a good
time! the venue was a little weird (they didn't want us to stand), but
all was good. ig let this band of four girls on stage to do a song. i
guess they were serenading them in the parking lot earlier. in amy's
words, it was "the most free form show we've done yet". here's the
setlist (i got my first setlist! thanks sulli):

free form? i hate to say this, but these are pretty much the
*same* songs they do, every time. i love seeing the girls live,
but the last time i saw them, in vegas, it was kind of a
disappointment because they just played these same songs
*again* - seems like they *always* do get out the map,
chickenman, power of two, least complicated, shame on
you, closer to fine, gallileo, and kid fears. i don't mean to
complain but there's so many songs i'd love to hear live that
it seems like they never do - prince of darkness, or ghost,
or watershed, or world falls, or secure yourself, or blood
and fire, or mystery, or leeds, or..well, you get the point.
i heard ghost once and that was a amazing event, but it seems
like a rarity, y'know? i know that if they're going to sing a song
they have to practice it and such, but you'd think they'd be
sick to death of singing the same songs over and over...as
much as i love hearing chickenman live...these same songs
get old.

by free form she was referring to the fact that they let the group of
girls on stage, that they sang happy birthday, that they were listening
to a lot of requests. they were very talkative with the audience. i
don't think she was referring to the setlist.
and yeah, they are a lot of the same songs. but it is probably safe to
say that a lot of the people at the shows aren't as obsessed with ig as
many people on the list (including myself, of course). most
concertgoers don't follow them around whenever they are in the area.
most of them probably haven't seen them dozens of times. therefore,
they wouldn't be bored with the get out the map, chickenman, galileo,
etc. but those are ig's hits. they have to play them. this was
actually the first show i've ever seen where they didn't play least
complicated and the first by show where they didn't play moment of
forgiveness. so yeah, it was pretty free form.

i think it is important to remember that some people who are at an ig show
are seeing them live for the first time. we have seen several shows on this
tour, and happen be at 4 last week, and i must say that i personally never
thought any songs sounded "tired"! we also heard, three hits, hammer & a
nail, romeo & juliet, watershed, the woodsong, i think you get the point! i
have seen almost 30 shows, and frankly i would be disappointed if the girls
didn't do least complicated, gallileo,& closer to fine, i love watching the
crowd, what an awesome feeling of unity, i think it rocks!
just my .02,

well i don't know ......least complicted seems rather overrated to me.
just like love will come to you far outshines power of two.
maybe the girls should start doing shows specifically for
newcomers...and play all the standards there.(lol) and they could title

i was thinking along the same lines. they could do a "best of" tour for
people who wanted to hear the top 20, then a "b sides" tour for those of us
who have been to plenty of shows and want to hear lesser-played songs. of
course being an ig glutton i would probably go to both shows anyway, since i
still love hearing galileo and least complicated and power of two. i guess
it's only ctf that i am truly tired of!

hi,
i lurk a lot on this list - but i have just started a career as a producer
bringing folk/lightly plugged/acoustic and spoken word music to the
wilmington delaware area. tonight is my first show - christine lavin!! if
you don't know her - check her out at www.christinelavin.com <http://www.christinelavin.com/> as she is
wonderful. she has put together many cd's with other artists and is a real
advocate for many organizations especially independent activists. she is one
of the original four bitchin' babes and has a cd titled "getting in touch
with my inner bitch".
she will be playing tonight in wilmington de at grace church at 8pm. my
friend "lulu" his drag name will be warming up the crowd. if you are
anywhere within 1 hour of wilmington please come. you can get tickets for
$16 at the door if you mention you are on the indigo girls list serve.
also check our my website for more concerts to come. if you want to see
zrazy for $9 the promo code is celie or if you want to see catie curtis the
promo code is freeze.

a close friend from high school that i haven't seen in years (but would

right? here's my question: does anyone have any tips on cheap
airfare? there are so many websites out there that claim to have the
cheapest price. can anyone recommend anything?

i have to agree with most of this post. i've now seen the girls 10 times and
the past, oh, four shows or so have been annoyingly similar. they are always
awesome live, but i just wish they'd mix up the set lists more. i understand
playing closer to fine and galileo at every show. they are the two best
known ig songs. but i'm a little tired of the emily standards power of two,
least complicated, and get out the map. also, i would be very happy if ig
never played shame on you at a show i attended again. not that these are bad
songs, but when you follow a group around a bit, you get tired of the same
songs. what happened to strange fire, fugitive, secure yourself, you and me
of the 10,000 wars, hey kind friend, love will come to you, and everything
in its own time? twice when i've seen ig they opened with welcome me and it
kicked ass. they should consider doing that a few more times. it was the
best opener for them i've seen (three hits came close). i'd also kill to see
cedar tree and walk away live. can you imagine how cool that would be?
hey, does anyone know why the girls seem to not play anything off of nomads
live anymore (with the occasional exception of watershed)?
cheers,
tom

a b-sides tour could never happen in a million years. when you
factor in the costs associated with the tour, it wouldn't make
financial sense. they'd be playing to mostly empty houses because
only the hardcore fans would show up.
however, they could do a small "fan club" type show once or twice a
year in atlanta where they mainly play rarities, but this whole
general gripe is so subjective anyay. as someone else pointed out,
the majority of audiences are only going to one show a year and want
to hear the things that they know.

because those are the most popular songs for mass audiences! if i
were a casual ig fan, i would be hugely disappointed if i didn't hear
ctf, galileo, least complicated and get out the map. hell, even as a
hardcore fan, even though i don't absolutely love all of these songs,
i still appreciate them - if only for the roar of the crowd that
comes after they play them.

mystery has been played a few times on this tour, as recently as last
month. same with ghost (over 10 concerts this year). watershed has
made a resurgence on this tour - it's been played at least 20 times.
prince of darkness and world falls have been played a few times.
secure yourself seemingly just made it back for the first time in
ages. leeds is a different beast altogether because it needs a
piano. and no matter how much anybody complains, we're never going
to hear blood and fire because amy says she doesn't want to play it.
it's just subjective based on the luck of the draw in terms of what
concert you get to attend. it sucks sometimes but we unfortunately,
we can't usually dictate the setlist. :-(

keep in mind that each show has to have a balance. they have to play
the favorites, play a good chunk of stuff from the new album that
they're promoting, and songs that they think are fun to do. it must
not be easy for them. i'm just happy that they're not like other
bands i know that do the exact same setlist every night. imagine how
boring trading would be! :-)
