i can comment on the robert downey, jr. version. it's soulful, sweet
and beautiful. it's the kind of thing where you listen to it and
think, "who is this?" and then you read who it is and go,
"nahhhhhh." :-)

subject: new mp3s and transcription online: on the tracks interview
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

hi all,
just uploaded the on the tracks interview to indigogirls.de.
it's a 2 hour radio interview show that was aired on german radio on
august 4th 2002. amy and emily got to pick the tracks that were
played.
the tracklist reads as follows:
become you (album version)
collecting you (album version)
public enemy - don't believe the hype
husker du - sorry somehow
freedy johnston - the mortician's daughter
ani difranco - 32 flavors
queen latifah - u.n.i.t.y.
john trudell - bombs over baghdad

in case you want to burn your own cds of the show, you can download
artwork for it, too and there's a complete transcript available for
download, as well (didn't want to post it here and bomb your mailboxes
with it, it's loooong).
you can find all that stuff here:
<http://www.indigogirls.de/downloads/onthetracks.htm>
the union chapel show (the london show with poetry readings in
between songs) is also still online, in case there are still people around
who need that. it's here:
<http://www.indigogirls.de/downloads.html>
have fun downloading.
be well,
kathrin

"letters in the attic is a gem!" --emily saliers of the indigo girls
just another random ig moment. the other quote on the cover was by

an open letter to rolling stone

this letter was written to rolling stone after their "women in "rock" issue
was published, but was not printed by their editors.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
i tried to find some cleverly worded way to express my disgust with your
"women in rock" issue, but what i have to say is really quite simple: you
guys are completely retarded.
by rs standards, rock is no longer a style of music but a trendy costume to
be whipped up by expensive stylists and slapped onto the latest pop tart
barbie doll. give a girl some tight pants and a spiky bracelet and poof! she
rocks!
your poor choice of cover girls and featured artists brings to mind the
sports illustrated swimsuit editions. there is nothing necessarily wrong with
the breast-baring models inside..but we all understand that they have nothing
to do with sports--which just might be offensive to women who are interested
in sports or who might even be (gasp) real athletes.
yes, britney has a talented stylist and yes, somebody gave shakira a guns &
roses t-shirt to wear..but they are not now nor will they ever be rock.
maybe it's naive of me to expect any glimmer of rock'n'roll credibility or
respect for women from a magazine whose cover shot is regularly a naked
underweight actress. the thing is , i am a woman musician with a rock band,
and as we all are i am starved for any little crumb of recognition that real
women rockers might be thrown. so like a sucker i find myself short another
five bucks ..and pissed enough to write my first letter to an editor. avril
lavigne gets some studded accessories from hot topic so now she's "upholding
the brazen tradition of teenage outrage"???!! are you serious? and could
someone please explain to me why people keep insisting on referring to pink
as rock? wasn't she doing the white girl hip hop thing a minute ago? yeah,
she performed on the aerosmith tribute show --big deal..she was on the janet
jackson tribute show just before that--whatever's trendy. who cares. she's a
spice girl reject...but i digress.
jewel and mandy friggin' moore have full page features as rock
icons...meanwhile joan jett gets one line. one line. joan jett & the
blackhearts, who have never stopped touring, recently did 10 days in the
middle east playing for the troops stationed in afghanistan. in afghanistan,
joan would come onstage wearing a birkha, which she ripped off and stomped on
before blazing through the purest and nastiest rock show anywhere. but even
in the rs women in rock issue, a story like that gets one sentence on the
bottom of the last page of random notes.
britney's rock credentials? well, she butchers the song "i love rock'n'roll"
on her latest record, and when asked about it the genius replies "well, i've
always loved pat benatar." and she is your rock issue cover girl?? you should
be really embarrassed.
sleater kinney was the only rock group listed on the cover..and they got only
half a page. ashanti, the r&b back up singer who can't seem to do anything
without "featuring jah rule," has two pages.
what about the donnas? the yeah yeah yeahs? the distillers? a mag like rs has
the power to shine important light on groups like these--instead they are
afterthoughts, and that valuable spotlight is wasted on the same overexposed
pop princesses who have nothing to do with rock.
in your own letter from the editor you have the hypocritical balls to say
"rock radio won't touch female artists, while the pop factory keeps churning
out soundalike clones, and ambitious musicians with something to say find
themselves left out in the cold."
the pages that follow those words are a blatant display that rolling stone
magazine is happily working for the factory now too.
if the issue had been called "women in music"..or maybe "some cute girls with
top 10 records out right now"..i would have no beef with it. corny as it may
sound, rock is something which is still meaningful and even sacred to some of
us. use the word "rock" in bold letters next to a picture of britney fucking
spears, and you're turning your whole publication into a joke...and an
offensive joke at that.

i haven't seen anyone post on the surprise show on friday night (11/22) at
eddie's attic in decatur yet. the original bill was paul melancon opening
for mrs. fun. the girls did a set in between paul & mrs. fun.
they sang, with paul, the hollies "the air i breathe", with a bit of
radiohead's "creep" thrown in. paul is great - the more i hear him sing,
the more i like him. he's quite popular on xm radio as well, as dee has
heard him on there quite a lot. then, after paul was done, to everyone's
surprise, both of the girls pulled out a couple of guitars each, tuned up and
played 5 songs! they played "yield", "collecting you", "diary queen",
"love's recovery", and "become you". they talked a lot between songs, while
tuning - making fun of themselves for taking so long, and talked about the
old days when they used to play 4 sets a night at the pub.
after they played their songs, mrs. fun played a fun and lively set. they
are amazing! just keyboards and drums, but if you closed your eyes, you'd
swear it was a 5 piece band! at the end of their set, they invited the
girls up for a few more songs. they played "undecided", which included amy &
emily rapping. too funny! after that, they played "you've got to show".
and the show stopper, in my opinion, was the last song they did - which was a
cover - mama's & the papas "californa dreaming". so much fun!! made me
remember how much i loved living in atlanta!

i am a big garrison starr fan. she has tons of energy and her stuff is
pretty unique. i highly recommend her current cd and any of her older
stuff. my beau and her are childhood friends from mississippi so i've been
fortunate to not only experience her music but know that she's a very cool
girl in person too. she sure is purty :). we saw her open for cracker at
the metro in chicago a few months back. she'll be back in chicago at the
riviera with steve earle this weekend. check her out! i don't think she's
ever played with ig but they did get to know each other from the lilith fair
tours. i don't know of a discussion list for her but will surely be
interested if there is one. see ya--greg

just to clarify, joan jett didn't actually write that letter to rolling stone. if you go to her website, joanjett.com, you'll see it was actually written by someone named maya price.
it's a great letter but let's make sure to give credit where credit is due.

oh, thank god. thank you for posting that clarification. i had been
meaning to post about this. i was really confused because it really
didn't sound like joan's tone.
the letter's sentiments are great (as i read the issue of rs, i
thought the same thing and wondered: how come the majority of the
artists featured in the 50 greatest female albums aren't actually
featured in this issue?), but it's no wonder the letter would go
unprinted in rolling stone. it's written unprofessionally and
instead of making rational clear points about how they missed the
boat on not including real rock artists, it just slams the artists
they did include. while i do agree that many of the artists listed
(britney, shakira) do not represent rock, to make statements like
"and could someone please explain to me why people keep insisting on
referring to pink as rock? wasn't she doing the white girl hip hop
thing a minute ago?...she's a spice girl reject...but i digress" just
comes off like sour, bitter grapes. maya, while making excellent
points, had no chance of making it into rolling stone. anger needs
to be properly channeled and directed before any publication is going
to give it a shot. the anger should be directed at the magazine, or
the public who make them popular, not at the artists themselves.
just my thoughts....

it actually was posted on the joan jett website with the instructions to
"pass it along to everyone you know," the author's name did appear at the
very bottom of the letter, so it was easy to miss. a disclaimer later
appeared before the letter, explaining that joan jett did not write it, but
the letter remains posted on the site.
i think the underlying message of the letter was a valid one...i can totally
understand the frustration the author felt, but she should've just stayed
clear of the slurs against other performers and stuck to the simple fact
that none of the women prominently featured in rs's women in rock issue are
even rock artists.

the letter, in a word, rocks.
who ever said the writer needs to "chill out" need to grow a spine.
and jason, i only ask due to an over abundant air in your statements... how many articles and/or letters to the editor have you had published in rs?
sometimes folks, a writer writes stuff to stand exactly as is, not to be fluffed into a 'shape' that fits on an editors page.
and not for nothing... pink is not rock neither is that extreamly hot piece of ..... musician britney spaers.
so maybe the letter don't belong in a mag, but it sure as hell belong in writing.

actually, maybe they just grew their own opinion. i agree with the sentiments of
the letter writer, and i can understand why she chose to write as she did; i
would never censure that. but it's important to recognize that she was preaching
to the choir, not writing to inform or educate those who disagreed. her approach
was extremely unconstructive, and insulting your intended audience up front -
whether you're calling them spineless or retarded - isn't a very good way to
demonstrate that you have something worthwhile to tell them.
i think jason is right - anybody who takes such a hostile tone is not very
likely to get their letter published anywhere but on the internet. i don't think
he was saying anything beyond that.

i'll just let that stand as it is.

thanks. that was exactly my point. and i think for joan to promote it on her website implies that she agrees with all sentiments, and if she does, i think it's a relatively unprofessional stance to take.

and i agree with that too. ;-)
joe, re:

i'm not sure i'm following your logic. are you saying that in order for me to have an opinion on what is acceptable for journalism, i have to have had articles and/or letters published?
in case it matters (not that it should), i've been a subscriber to rs for 13 years, so i feel i have a pretty good idea of what types of letters are going to get printed. on another point, i'd be interested to see if you (or anyone) could actually find a letter of that length that was ever printed in rs (and not written by an artist themselves). rs could print it, but i think it would only ultimately make the writer look foolish, not rolling stone.
fwiw, i was an editor of two different local newspapers (arts & entertainment section) for seven years, but i'm not sure why that matters either. please contact me privately if you'd like more information on my credentials. :-d
happy turkey to all,
jason

ok the names are coming in slowly but surely so i won't get the list
out by friday. i'm hoping
to send each person a list of 10-15 names to send cards to. right now i
have only 14 names nd addresses total..
i am receiving questions from newbies who haven't been around for the
annual christmas card exchange.......i will explain it just once more.
(please take note if i have to do so again i- will- take- my- chalkboard
-hunt- you down-and- scratch- it- by- your- ear- so-you- go- insane-
get- down- on- your- knees-and- beg- my- forgiveness!...lol)
every year we have someone (me this year) gather together names of
people who want to give and receive x-mas cards......if you are
interested. in signing up....email your name and snail mail address. i
will sign you up.
peace
