howdy ya'll,
if it was a 'traditional' xmas song, it could possibly
be "in the bleak mid-winter", but i'm not sure since i
don't know if any clean recording was ever done of it.
just a thought! peace and love ya'll!

here is a small article that the globe ran on ig today!!
take care!!

honoring the earth to hear the indigo girls' amy ray tell it, it was a
natural fit for her and performing partner emily saliers to appear at radio
station wbos's holiday concert tomorrow night to benefit honor the earth.
''it is great that [the people at wbos] are really supporting causes. ...
unfortunately it's rare for a radio station,'' said ray in a phone interview
last week. both the indigo girls and fellow benefit performer aimee mann are
large enough acts that they don't have to play radio station concerts to get
radio station airplay. ''we love performing with aimee, and when we have a
chance to perform and support a cause, we do it,'' said ray. in fact, it was
the artists who chose the station rather than the other way around. ''each
year we look at what we'd like to do and how much money we think we can
raise,'' said ray. ''then we work out our schedule and talk to other acts and
see what we can do.'' ray and saliers use their success to support the
efforts of native americans and specifically, honor the earth, in saving the
environment. (before tomorrow's concert, there is a planned announcement of a
new honor the earth initiative to seek alternative energy sources.) ray isn't
surprised that recent international events and the possibility of us troops
going to iraq have brought environmental causes to the fore. ''i think if
there's anything that's good out of this is that people are talking about
it,'' said ray. ''you know kids in school just get it. they know we need to
find other ways of doing things. it's the rest of us who need to be
reminded.''

what were the words? i'm a big fan of the so-called "holy" carols so if
it really is a traditional well.....hm. you got me thinking!
"traditional" usually means the song was handed down over time...doesn't
it? under
that definition i don't think river would fit and still be
"traditional..." it may be joni mitchell traditional though.

i talked to my sister again and she said it definitely was a live version, it wasn't "river," it was pretty "lively" and had the words "merry christmas" in it.
i'm totally stumped. she said she would keep trying to call wxrt, but they don't seem to answer the phone very often.
peace,

this question came up on the bbs a little while ago and in addition to
"river," our almighty moderator underdog added:
they did an in studio recording of a song called 'in the bleak mid-winter'
on a holiday special that was broadcast back in december of 1990 on a and e.

they also sat in with steve earle, emmylou harris, and jackson browne on
april 12, 1999 at the ryman auditorium in nashville, tennessee and sung a
steve earle song called 'christmastime in washington'
but, it doesn't sound like either one of these is the one your sister heard.

indigo girls: the power of two
folk icons the indigo girls have a gift for melding the personal and the
political into terrific songs. but the duo say
their musical stardom is secondary; they're activists first.
by christine facciolo
special to the news journal
12/06/2002
when amy ray and emily saliers strummed their way onto the national
scene as the indigo girls in 1989, few
would have guessed that their smarter-than-average brand of acoustic pop
would survive for so long.
folkies were not welcome on top 40 radio then, and the indigo girls were
hardly made-for-video babes. worse yet,
some critics had dismissed their songs as "cheap therapy."
but over a decade later, the duo are still singing their tight-knit
harmonies to lyrics that speak of self-discovery
and personal fulfillment. in fact, the sincerity that once made them
unique is the very reason for their long-term
success.
"part of what we're about as artists is trying to connect with people
and their lives through our music. that's more
important to us than how many records we sell," said ray by phone from
georgia where she and saliers are on a
break from touring to support their latest album, "become you." they
will play a sold-out show at the grand opera
house in wilmington on wednesday.
recorded in an atlanta studio, "become you" marks a return to their folk
roots after 1999's genre-jumping rock
release "come on now social."
"i'd wanted to do a folk album for a while, so we both decided it was
time to do it," ray said.
but this is no mere retread. in fact, to label it a 'back-to-basics'
disc would shortchange the personal and creative
growth she and saliers brought to the project, ray said.
in the title track, for example, ray tries to come to terms with her
southern identity in a region still haunted by
racism.
"i tried to personalize these ideas, to portray differences with my
neighbors in my own rural area," she said. "to
me, it's all about how you come to understand another person, how you
can respect their humanity even when you
think their position is deplorable."
as always, their individual compositions reveal the differences between
these two partners, who in many ways are
a study in contrasts. ray, 38, is tough and outspoken and sings with a
lusty alto. saliers, 39, is more reflective
and her vocals are high and ethereal. ray says she's been influenced by
such late 1970s punk rockers as patti
smith and the clash. saliers prefers joni mitchell. ray makes her home
"in the middle of the woods" of rural
northern georgia, while the more citified saliers resides in atlanta,
where she is part-owner of a restaurant. the
two never write songs together, and when not on tour drift apart to
their separate circles of friends.
but there are common bonds. both are children of professional parents,
georgia-raised (ray, a native, saliers a
transplant from new haven, conn.) and graduates of emory university.
they have known each other since
elementary school and have been playing music together since 1980. three
years later, they officially became the
indigo girls, picking the name because ray "liked the sound of it."
ray explains their chemistry in matter-of-fact terms, "we're more like
family than friends. we give each other a lot
of space. i guess that helps us stay together."
and by all accounts, the collaboration has been a profitable one. since
their debut, they have recorded nine studio
albums, sold more than seven million records and earned six grammy
nominations.
and while they never aspired to wealth or fame, ray admits that success
does have its benefits. "being successful
allows you to do the things you wouldn't otherwise be able to do," she
said.
for ray, that meant establishing her own record label, daemon records,
in 1990. billed as a not-for-profit
enterprise, the label issued ray's solo effort, "stag," last year and
has produced recordings by a variety of
atlanta-based artists, many of whom have contributed to indigo girls
projects.
since 1991, the indigo girls have turned their attention toward
political activism, something that has taken on an
increased urgency after the events of sept. 11. "we have always
considered ourselves activists first and pop stars
second," ray said.
building on their interest in environmentalism, ray and saliers have
become involved with the honor the earth
movement, which has raised more than $250,000 for american indian
activists. "emily and i felt that the
indigenous environmental movement was really important because its
approach was very grass-roots," ray said.
in 1997, the indigo girls traveled to chiapas, mexico, as part of a
delegation to support the zapatista rebels'
struggle for democracy and economic justice. the trip was an educational
experience for ray. "you really learn to
tell the difference between rebel groups, that not all movements are
good. the farc in colombia are really thugs,"
she said. ray's song, "nuevas seņoritas," from "become you" was written
in honor of the women who fight
alongside the zapatistas.
always evolving as artists, ray and saliers have found ways to broaden
their horizons. in 1994 they played
themselves in the movie "boys on the side," which starred whoopi
goldberg and drew barrymore. and last year
they accompanied the atlanta ballet's interpretation of their music in
"the indigo girls project."
the indigo girls still credit part of their longevity to the intense
loyalty of their fans and have always found novel
ways to show their appreciation. in 1993, they undertook a 'ten-dollar
tour' of small clubs with all tickets and
t-shirts priced at ten bucks. and fans have always been encouraged to
tape and share their live performances.
"no matter how many people we play for, it's always been important to
reach each of them. and that's not going to
change," ray said.

hi y'all,

i agree entirely with michelle's assessment, a great show but too short. how is it possible that aimee mann played 20 minutes *longer* than the girls? grumble.
aside from the brevity, and the purportedly inaccurate representation of wind power by winona laduke, it really was a great show. i can't explain the wind thing, but my girlfriend the scientist says that the way the windpower information was presented was naive and inaccurate. and, as she pointed out, both amy and emily drive the dreaded suv's winona denounced in the opening. also, the amount of power that winona talked about generating from the one windpower center in minnesota couldn't have even provided enough power to operate the equipment onstage last night!
i still managed to enjoy myself, even sitting in the balcony!

i found this online -=20
"anyway, i love you" is an amy ray song from "color me grey," her
solo demo tape / "album" from around 1985.
anyway, i love you - lyrics
sweet gypsy, blowing through my mind
and through my heart, so full and empty
well, these days seem strange somehow
a billion years isn't what it appears to be.
now you tell me that you're losing hold of time
you can't seem to find your peace of mind
well, i'm so far away, and i'm trying to see you through
i can't help but feel i may be losing you.
should i let you go
for your own sake?
should i hold you close
for mine?
anyway, i love you, and i couldn't be more sure
these tears cry out "please, don't let go,"
oh, but their words
they keep haunting me.
you can't build your life around a dream
well, it's too late
now, my world is you
there's nothing they could say or do.
well, i remember the first time that i fell
i swear i never thought i'd make it up again
i've been flying on the wings of your love
and i'm not getting down, just to fall again.
don't it seem like the road is, oh, so long?
well, everybody's moving out
and we're staying on
in this absurdity.
now you don't let go of me
i'm begging you
now, you don't let go of me.
anyway, i love you.

although i'm not interested in buying a new car for another 6-7 years, i've already looked at the honda hybrid, which comes with all the amenities, including cd and a/c, and, no. 1 in my book, comes with a manual transmission. i like the way it looks.

or the lack there of. here's what happened.
it's about 830 pm and show time was 8:00 michelle malone hadn't come on yet.
and something didnt feel right. now as we all know amy or emily usually
comes out and announces the opener. well this guy came out and started with
"i'm not the indigo girls" he got some laughs, and trust me they were the
last one's he was going to get. he proceded to tell us that the indigo girls
were not going to be performing that night because they couldn't get there.
they aparently tried to fly out and due to the ice had to land two times
neither of which were close enough to wilmington to get there in time. they
eventually landed at jfk. when it was reported to us that they would not be
playing they were on the jersey turn pike. sooo let me just tell you that i
think most of the people there realized that the girls clearly couldnt' help
it and were disappointed but were going to live. there were several however
who were very rude yelling at the guy on stage having to make the
announcement.
so it became a michelle malone show. imagine the pressure for
michelle to have to fill the shoes of a crowd totally bummed at not getting
to see the girls. michelle did very well. she clearly wasnt' in the best of
spirits but she played and got through it. and i dont' know if it was the
sound guy or just the bad lines in the place but the sound sucked. in the
middle of every song the sound would get louder, or echoy ...or just
something else annoying. after about the 5th or so song michelle got fed up
and took her finger and beckoned the sound guy over to her. i guess she just
reiterated what was going wrong. in the middle of michelle's set someone
said "play some indigo girls songs" to which michelle retorted "f*ck
you"....an appropriate response...she went on to say "i'm sure you guys have
their cds..probably in your cars...if you want to go out and listen to
them..." she took it well but was clearly pissed. the people who did stay
for her show were polite enough. i'm sure michelle was glad that the show is
now over.
the show has been reschedulded for feb 18th.

i'm not sure, but i think amy was under the weather. if you noticed, she
wasn't as peppy during "go" as she normally is -- and this is the first show
in the last 6 or so that i've been to this tour where she didn't perform
"chickenman". i also happened to notice (from the 8th row -- yay!) that
she was drinking tea when they introduced winona... i'm guessing that this
is why the show was shorter than usual... i don't have any real info to
that effect though...
still a great show -- the crowd was incredibly energetic...
michelle -- did i see you mention you were listening to last nights show??
are you willing to b&p it?? please??? :-d

hi,
just wanted to add onto what was already said about the wilmington show.
the ig's got stranded and stuck because of ice. i spoke to michelle
after the show - after everyone was out of there and she could hear a
thing through her monitor and there was a lot of crackling in the sound
system and she was pretty frustrated.
we talked for a bit - because i'm planning to book her in may or june in
wilmington at a different venue. it's tough enough to be an opening act
- and then to have all the other conditions put on you - especially when
someone yell's play some ig stuff.
michelle has been out as a singer/songwriter for quite awhile and she
has been working her ass off. she and many like her don't get the
recognition they deserve and really work hard. it was nice to have some
fans out there for her. i know that lifted her spirits. she did good
in sales and other stuff. she has a new cd coming out in a few months.
so, look for her in the spring/summer in wilmington at a listening post
productions event www.listeningpost.us <http://www.listeningpost.us/> or as the person opening for the
february show.

thanks for the report carla - i was there too and also
bummed that the girls couldn't get there, but that's
the mid-atlantic weather for you! lol
it was funny because i called before i left (baltimore
area) and asked if the show was still on!
> she clearly wasnt' in the best of
> spirits but she played and got through it.
i thought michelle was great! i had never heard her
before and really enjoyed her songs. yes, she
probably was a little overwhelmed at it all of a
sudden being "her" show, but she seemed to take it all
right.
carla, you and others who may have seen her before can
tell better than me if she's in good spirits. :) she
did play a song someone in the crowd called out, and
seemed happy that a bunch of people knew a lot of her
songs.
one time she said "i'm michelle malone. i just wanted
you to know who the hell was up here entertaining
you..." or something like that.
> sound guy or just the bad lines in the place but the
> sound sucked.
i think it's the bad lines. that kind of place is
really not meant for a "mikes and amps" kind of show.
if it was a chamber music concert or an a cappella
choir the sound would have been great, especially in
the upper level. opera houses like that tend to have
practically perfect acoustics; notice how when she
stepped away from the mike and talked it wasn't that
difficult to hear her? that is...if people in the
audience would have some respect for the performer and
keep their traps shut!
it never ceases to amaze me how people talk through
the whole show. if you want to sit and talk (rather
loudly!) to your friends, don't come to the concert!
that was biggest problem i had with the evening.
> in the middle of michelle's set someone
> said "play some indigo girls songs" to which
> michelle retorted "f*ck you"....an appropriate
> response...
i thought she was kidding about that...but then again,
i don't know michelle's personality, and if she would
be "offended", because i took the comment from the
audience person to be in a joking way. she also said
in her response that she only knows the harmony on
some ig songs from the occasional times she has joined
them.
> she went on to say "i'm sure you guys have
> their cds..probably in your cars...if you want to go
> out and listen to them..."
now that was funny. :)
> she took it well but was clearly pissed.
ok...so i was probably wrong with my comments above.
:) michelle ended the statement by saying, "...if you
want to go out and listen to them...on your way
home..." nice dig to the rude people. go michelle!!
> i'm sure michelle was glad that the show is
> now over.
she was very gracious with the crowd, and she came out
in the lobby to meet and greet. i talked to her for a
minute and thanked her for playing. she said "thank
you for staying".
i think about 60-70% of the people left after they
made the announcement that ig weren't going to be
there, which is too bad because michelle had some
great songs, and nice guitar work. she probably
wasn't obligated to stay, and the fact that she did,
and everyone essentially got a free concert...the
least people could do was to be polite, so if she is
pissed about the show she has every right to be!
yeah, it was only a few rude people, but it only takes
a few to ruin things for everyone.
bottom line: i enjoyed michelle's performance and am
especially grateful if she stayed even if she "didn't
have to". michelle, if you're out there, thanks
again!! sure i would have loved to see ig also, but
now we all have feb 18 to look forward to.

plus these idiots had the chance to leave if they didn't want to stay for
michelle's set. i thought it was very rude for people to talk during her
set. also very rude for someone to call out a request for an ig song. its
not very cool to ask a musician to do a cover of someone else's song.
i thought michelle did a really great job. she is an awesome musician and
the people that left missed out on a great show.
we came from the baltimore area also and i was also thinking i wonder if this

we were first in line and got these third row tickets for tomorrow night's
show in cupertino but we're moving this weekend and there's still too much to
do so we can't go. the tickets cost us about $50 a piece and that's what
we'll sell them to you for. you have to pick them up in san francisco. the
first person to email us gets them. we wanted to put them up here first - if
no one on the list wants them we'll put them on craigslist by 5pm today.

it is very rude to yell out a question in the middle

was rude. what made it rude was the inappropriate
timing of it.

you really think that rude behaviour justifies someone
else's rude response? i'd expect that comment from
another type of artist (the volatile, eminem type of
artist)
>she went on to say "i'm sure you guys have

this is a very appropriate response. it's getting
your point across without resorting to a comment like
f*** you. - i don't think the f*ck you was very
appropriate. can't a person convey his or her anger
without resorting to immature comebacks? the f***you
was uncalled for, in my opinion. i have more respect
for a person, any person, who can respond to
inappropriate situations and emotional situations with
maturity and dignity.
maybe she was having a bad night. she's only human.
i'm not picking on her, but i take issue with the fact
that you say it was an appropriate response. i don't
think it was very appropriate. i don't think rude
behavior should justify and beget more rude behavior.
ah well, to each his own.

i wasn't at the non-show, but i have to agree that for someone to request
that michelle malone, as established artist in her own right, play "some
indigo girls songs," regardless of when or where in the set the question was
asked, was inappropriate. it would be like requesting the indigo girls to
play some songs by melissa etheridge, its just ill-mannered. and even more
inappropriate given the situation--michelle could've opted to not play at
all, but instead, she shouldered the entire show and gave listeners a little
something for their efforts in coming out--she should've been treated with
the same type of respect fans would've treated amy and emily with (but
chances are, the rude audience members would've been just as rude had the
girls shown up).

hkf's,

ok, we're all getting a little to hoytie-toytie (sp) here about this guy
asking for ig songs.
i bet dollars to doughnuts that if she had played 'em you'd all be saying
that was so cool of her to do that for everyone.
if they were at a metallica show, a dylan, even the butchies and/or kristin
hall show for that matter, it wouldn't make sence, but to be a mm show, an
artist who has co-written, sung, recorded with, covered with and opened for
many upon many times, including that night. i think it makes sence...
i think it would of been real cool if she busted out a "closer to fine" or at
least "i don't wanna know" where amy gives her writing credit for.
i think we're all just folowing michelle reaction. this is not a moment to be
hollyer then thou and say "i would never be so rude to request another
persons song"
i know i yelled "freebird" at many a show (and that even happens on "live at
the uptown" before amy sings "blood and fire"
i'm gonna go ahead and say it was very michelle, and very cool for her to
react that way, but i don't think it would (contract stips withstanding) bad
if she did.... simply put, it's what the crowd wanted and for almost any
artist... you gotta give'em what they want

i disagree. we were there, and i thought the request was light-hearted (and
so was the response) - but maybe that's just the way my dry humour is.
it's certainly not unprecedented - i'm thinking (don't laugh) of little
richard who, when fats domino was sick at the last minute, did a set of
fats' songs in addition to his own. that's true class. not that i expected
michelle to do the same, but i'm sure if she could have, she would have.
same for if the igs opened for michelle and she no-showed.
but compared with axl rose's no-show fiasco last weekend in philly -
apparently they cancelled the guns 'n' roses show at 11pm after both support
acts had already played - last night was handled in the best possible way,
and pretty much everyone was understanding.
anyhoo... yes, insensitive audience members do suck sometimes, so go see
some smaller shows, house concerts even (a shameless plug for our series, i
know - www.sixthst.com) <http://www.sixthst.com)/> or try mary's series too (www.listeningpost.us <http://www.listeningpost.us/>) - we
met her last night and she's a sweetheart. the artists are just as good and
audience size is often inversely proportional to how well behaved the
audience is.

what is it with wbos anyway? no ig interview, strange far far out shots =
of them at the concert? so much airstaff so little performers.
no online action, no coverage of the concert. what?
maybe the station should interview the airstaff and hold a meeting and le=
t everyone in the kbos offices hear it, oh, over the loudspeakers maybe? =20

i have one ticket for sale (possibly 2, but i will not know until 3pm or so).
you will have to meet me outside the venue on time (with cash) tonight if
you want it. i am selling it for under face value. i will be the person
with an alligator floppy hat. i am really short, so i am hard to miss. if
you are at all interested, please call my cell! (415) 307-2074. if no
answer, leave a message. i need to get rid of this ticket!
i will not be on e-mail between now and the show. i will be down in the
south bay all day if you want to meet earlier, that may be possible.
the seat is not so great. it is on row y. but it is on the main floor. if
i did end up having two to sell, they would be together. i am asking $30
each.
