apologies for the cross-post:
well, i know i am always one to tout wxpn in philadelphia, but in checking
their web site, i discovered they will not, as in the past, be playing the
top 50 albums of the year in their entirety, but rather will just play some
snippets of each and then at some point grace us with the top 10. sure there
have been clunkers (in my opinion), so i just put on npr or a cd of my own,
then tune back in later. i've heard some real treats among those top 50. this
really bleeps!

hey, everyone,
given ig's interest in the causes of indigenous people, i want to highly recommend the movie "rabbit-proof fence," which is the story of three aboriginal girls in western australia who are abducted by the government so that they can be assimilated into white culture (aka, eventually wiped out, over generations), and their subsequent escape and journey back home. it is a remarkable movie!

the past year and discovered that two of the mp3s that i downloaded from brian
clary's site did not completely download. if you can help me out, please e-
mail me privately. please do not attach the mp3s to any e-mails since it would
likely clog up both of our e-mail accounts...we can use an ftp site. the mp3s
that i need are:

seattle, wa 7/9/02

thanks jeremy :) this acoustic cafe was a pleasure, not only because =
it's been awhile since i've heard any ig stuff, but also because of the =
interview. a&e seemed genuinely to be interacting with the interviewer =
and considering the questions. more like a give-and-take kind of thing, =
rather than giving the same old answers.
no surprises here, but the songs sounded great, even with my crappy =
speakers. yay.

as we approach the new year (okay, we've now gone into the new year over
here in the uk) and all the excitement and possibility that that
entails, i thought it appropriate to look back at 2002...with the
triumphant (and long-awaited) return to the uk by the girls in addition
to many great memories and experiences.
the year began with a tremendous high...had tickets and travel
arrangements made to follow the girls around on their 4 date jaunt
around the uk - london, manchester, glasgow and dublin.
prior to this year, i had never seen the girls play live. i got into
their music just after they decided to forgo these shores for 7 years.
therefore, you can only imagine my excitement on january 30 when the
girls were playing at shepherd's bush empire in london. jen mcqueen (my
good friend, concert buddy and fellow ig listee) and i made it a
celebratory day and had a very expensive lunch...that set us up well for
waiting outside the venue from 4pm. yes, 'twas our first gen admin ig
show in the uk, so had no idea how early one should get there. we ended
up being about 8th in the venue and got some very nice amy side front
row spots. what a show...the girls were nervous to be back, yet
grateful for the rapturous reception they received. waited outside the
venue after the show, in the freezing cold for about 2 hours.
entertained by a group of women who sang beautifully...never met them
and haven't seen them again since. saw a domino's pizza guy take some
pizzas into the venue and then the girls, john reynolds, carol isaacs,
and clare kenny come out into the cold. so my loss of ig viriginity was
capped with meeting amy and emily, having them sign a photo and then
them both taking a photo with me individually. was on cloud 9! :-)
and so onto manchester. saw a few familiar faces...and seemingly no
queuing system. didn't do so well that night, second row amy-side.
another fantastic show, although the sound was a bit loud and course.
we got to hear reunion and jen made a starring appearance being the only
audible person to yell "yes we are" after amy asks whether we're all
precious inside! :-) you go girl! waited outside the venue for the
girls after the show again...spoke to some of those familiar faces. a
big thank you to john bond for giving me the spare setlist you had been
given by sulli. didn't get to meet the girls again, emily rushed onto
the bus and amy signed a few things...including a woman's belly! still
worth waiting around though.
glasgow was great. got there nice and early and again secured front row
positions. again, meeting and talking to familiar faces in line...heh,
the beginning of the travelling ig touring community. in truth i had
more fun in line that night than in the show!
dublin was and still is a sore point for me. flight was cancelled on
the day of the show due to high winds and so we were stranded in
glasgow. we had front row seats reserved also. so that was a real low
point in the year.
however, we bounced right back, as the girls returned to our shores in
may. somebody spoke to clare kenny who said that the jan/feb tour was
"to test the waters...and that they found the waters to be boiling". so
a full european tour was made in april/may. managed to catch all 6 of
their uk dates. brighton...a beautiful day by the seaside...even
managed to listen to the whole of the soundcheck...wow! london with a
complete change of scenery. bristol...great way to wait in line, but
poor organisation by the venue and so getting in and to the front was a
little stressful. wolverhampton...4th consecutive night of shows...i
was exhausted. but what a setlist...a lot of golden oldies; a real
treat. sheffield - got to venue before midday and guess what...we were
finally first in line! but front row centre spots...can't get any
better than that! basked in the aura of amy meeting and greeting the
fans after the show. took her stuff to the bus and then walked back to
greet us all. took photos and signed anything...totally wonderful.
even declined hugging someone, by explaining how she's had bad
experiences in the past with hugging people. she was just so nice and
accommodating that night and the whole tour. what a truly kind-hearted
person. finally, edinburgh, scotland...a seated venue, how civilised.
the indigo gods had surely been with me in 2002 as they allowed me to
see the girls play at wolftrap, va, during my trip to the states. it
was great to meet jude, lisa d, marian and sandy at the show. a big
thank you to marian and lisa for getting me tickets...and to jude for
hanging out with me and taking me to georgetown. was a treat to see the
girls play a large rock show, with full band and electric guitars and a
proper backdrop. the uk shows have been acoustic duo shows, with some
guest band member appearances.
and while in the states, i hear that the girls are again returning to
the uk shores...in august! manage to hit 5 of the 7 shows. portsmouth
- what can i say...the stage was low, minimal barrier between stage and
audience. i was directly in front of amy! shall we just say that i
didn't hear much of the music that night! ;-) london, union chapel - a
unique show of words and music. such a treat that the girls would
create a special show for londoners, considering it was their third time
back in 8 months. cambridge folk festival...a very muddy event! but
what can you expect from the uk in august! ;-) girls were in top form
and the whole festival was recorded for webcast as well as a tv special.
shame they only showed one song, ctf, in the tv special, but hey, some
tv coverage is always better than none. you can see myself, jen and
john bond clearly in the footage! edinburgh...again so civilised. met
lisa d again in line there. and to avoid the dublin incident repeating
itself, we decided to forego the liverpool show and head to dublin a day
early. a great end to a great year of ig shows...went from 0-15 shows
in a matter of 8 months. also got a hug from sulli after dublin show as
well as a group photo with her and all the new friends we'd made.
and today, when visiting a new borders bookshop near my area, i saw amy
staring at me from the cover of performing songwriter. just completed
my ig year perfectly. :-)
so let's raise a glass to 2003 and hope it's as great an ig year for all
of us as 2002 has been for me.
thanks for reading this far if you have and i hope you all have a very
happy new year!
claudine
