[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo

apparently also on the setlist that night...]
there was an indigo girls concert in philly on wednesday night. and it was
awesome, too. i won't write much (no, really!) because it's 1:30 and i'm
exhausted from the trip back from the drew u show (which to me was basically a
shadow of the evening before as far as ig were concerned, but well worth
attending because drew's accompanying production of the vagina monologues was
so amazing) but the philly show was faboo. very respectful crowd that went
silent in the right places and sang when invited (on-key, even, as amy
observed) and amy and emily were very clearly enjoying playing for such a
crowd. they both seemed a little spacey at first, but snapped in
setlist, as near as i can remember (mostly out of order, probably with some
gaps, so everyone else please jump in):
reunion
hammer and a nail
moment of forgiveness
(here's where the order gets confused)
yield
she's saving me
become you
collecting you
(this definitely won the "oh my god so much better than i expected" award -
i'm very fond of the album track, but i do find it a bit flaccid, whereas live
this was absolutely searing)
closer to fine
our deliverance
(i know the order is right on these last ones)
power of two
galileo
- ----
kid fears
and there must have been another amy song in there somewhere, because that
seems imbalanced. oh, it was such a good show. such big happies. and i got to
see a lot of listfolk, which is always nice.
thanks for signing postcards, y'all!

subject: [ig-news] drew univ
hi all-
i didn't see any write-up about last night's show at drew univ. so i
thought i'd send something in. indigo girls played as part of v-day at
drew, a violence against women awareness event.
i arrived at 4:00 and was about 15th on line, which was a nice surprise.
doors opened at 5:00 and by then about 75 or so people had been lined up
outside, freezing, waiting to get in. we had to walk through metal
detectors, so it was slow going. the venue was a gym so it was rather small
(capacity 4,000 but i don't think it was sold out). there were no seats so
we camped out on the floor on blankets or towels. i was hoping to hear the
upcoming "become you" for the 2 hours we waited until the show officially
began at 7:00 but unfortunately they didn't play it. because i was there so
early, i managed to get a spot in the second row, center. the girls came on
promptly at 7:00. i brought a pad and pen with me to record the set list
but accidentally left it in my backpack, which i was forced to put back in
my car :( so sorry, no exact set list ( i did get a pick, though). it was
pretty similar to the nyc set list, but they didn't play "starkville" which
i was looking forward to. "virginia woolf" and "fugative" were a treat!
the audience was fairly polite, with a mix of college students along with
the regular crowd. not a lot of people seemed to recognize the new songs,
however. i base this on not hearing a lot of singing while the new stuff
was played. the audience did sing along for the old favorites, which a&e
seemed to enjoy.
amy broke 2 mandolin strings. the first time, she was mildly annoyed
but the second time she seemed pissed. then, some of the college-boy
security, who planted themselves in front of the stage, were chatting during
one of the songs. while emily was singing, amy walked over to that part of
the stage and did one of those "yoo hoo" whistles. that didn't get their
attention, so she frowned and walked back to the mic. after the song was
over, she walked back over to them and told then not to talk, at all. that
got a lot of clapping from those of us up front. right after that, they
were told to sit down as well, which was good since their standing up front
was very distracting. the girls seemed fairly upbeat, except for amy's
annoyance at breaking the string and the talking security boys. they
weren't very chatty, though. towards the end of the show, they spoke a bit
- - something about the "vagina monologues," which was to be performed next,
but we couldn't hear what they said due to clapping. emily did mention that
she had seen the "vagina monologues" before and that she enjoyed them. she
then shouted "vagina!" into the mic, which made the audience laugh and clap.
they came out for an encore, promising two songs but changed their mind and
only played one :( their part of the show lasted for 1.25 hours. it was
a great mix of new tunes and old favorites.
fashion report: amy had on a light blue shirt that had a shoe lace-type tie
across the front. her tattoo was slightly visible under the strings. she
had on black, shiny-ish pants (but they weren't leather), and some big,
black kiss-ass boots. emily had on a light blue shirt with patchwork
material over it and jeans, cuffed about 5" at the bottom.
sorry that this report was so long! overall, it was a great show (but i
wish they played longer).
peace-
mg

sulli would pop on and off stage like a tease, and then at around 8:30-ish,
amy and emily took the stage, and we were blessed with a winter reprieve.

some random comments i remember:
emily mentioned that they always love playing philly. their first time in
philadelphia at a place called "dooby's", they opened for a band called
ocean blue, six white boys. emily: "i wonder whatever happened to them."
neil said(to andi, val, and me): "they grew up to become n*sync," and we
laughed.
amy said that she wrote ozilline to cheer up her grandmother when she was
alive, and also now.
"where's kate?" amy said, "happy birthday, kate. we don't sing happy
birthday very well--it's a too happy a song for us."
the encore was dedicated to michael stipe. and we sang along in his place.
i've been out of the indigo girls' loop since my solo trek last august from
newport to wolftrap, so it was my first time to hear moment of forgiveness,
collecting you, become you, and our deliverance. wow. i can't wait until my
pre-ordered copy arrives from amazon.com, along with stag. it is so
wonderful to hear the girls during the wintertime. @}->->-- ~diane wong
