this is from the a&e section of friday's oregonian.  it's a little harsh but
i think its pretty accurate, and very colorful, especially the debbie gibson
comment.

cd review

become you
artist:  indigo girls
grade: b-
label: epic records

becoming two
the indigo girls' artistic paths diverge on their latest album

by harvest henderson

in 1987, when they released their first full-length album, "strange fire,"
the indigo girls were two soulful young women whose eerily perfect folk
harmonies inspired college kids across the nation to sing along.

fifteen years and several gold and platinum albums later, the duo's
fine-tuned formula is a sure thing in the commercial folk market.  the
indigos play to sold-out crowds all across the united states and europe.
their activism in feminist and environmental spheres is well-known.  their
collaborative artistic evolution, however is less certain.

"become you" is the indigos' eighth studio album, split evenly between songs
by brooding alto amy ray and softer soprano emily saliers.  the album
features talented guest musicians; acoustic, classical and electric guitars;
mandolins; and an aptly positioned hammond b-3 organ.  but the keystone of
the indigo sound has always been the intimate contrast between ray and
saliers in voice and lyrics.  "become you" finds the artists facing different
directions, taking different turns on tunes that just don't gel.

ray spent much of 2001 touring behind her solo album, "stag," released on her
own label, daemon records.  perhaps the time developing her own style helps
explain why she brings more to the table on this new indigo girls recording.

ray's steely voice and wanderlust lyrics push the album forward, from the pop
hook of the opener, "moment of forgiveness" to the dark digestive of "neuvas
senoritas," a barbed-wire ballad in homage of women who fight for change with
the zapatistas.  ray's songs are more rhythmic and accessible; she
effortlessly elaborates upon the group's winning acoustic aesthetic.

but saliers hesitates on the threshold.  her nostalgic tunes retrace the
indigos' roots, lingering skillfully on wistful themes from her body of work
but never breaking the skin.  "hope alone," co-written by annie roboff, is
especially unsuccessful.  it smacks of saccharine like an exhumed debbie
gibson garage recording from the 1980s.  sandwiched near the album's spare
tire of a midsection begins with the plea, "let's not drag this out," and
then proceeds to ignore its own advice.

"become you" tries to pull it together a bit too late.  ray's "bitter root"
gets listeners' attention with a hand-clapping, call-and-response harking
back to her southern roots.  "our deliverance" is a lovely, mournful song
that steeps saliers' voice in exquisite string combinations.  and ray's
"starkville" is a quick-fingered tune with a well-placed jaw harp.  "if you
were here in starkville, the townie boys would love the way you stare/if you
were here in starkville, all the local girls wouldn't have a prayer/but i
spent a reckless night inside the wonder of your everlasting charm/now i'm
haunted by geography and the flora and the fauna of your heart."

still, the constant back and forth is hard to take, despite the efforts of
producer peter collins who also produced 1992's "rites of passage" and 1994's
"swamp ophelia."  as a result, the new cd is littered with gems but unwieldy
as a whole, and "become you" never truly comes into its own.

stories like this make me love ig even more (if possible):

"sarah woolf's year of battling bone cancer, and inspiring many in her
hometown of decatur, came to an end saturday following a bedside serenade by
the indigo girls and phone calls from favorite tv stars.

woolf, 17, a junior at decatur high school, rallied her schoolmates with her
courage, humor and exuberance in facing ewing's sarcoma.

a highlight of her last day was a visit from the indigo girls, her favorite
musicians, who are from decatur. emily saliers and amy ray arrived at the
woolf home around 3 p.m. they sang some of her favorite songs -- including
"southland in the springtime" and "galileo" -- for about 45 minutes, said
david woolf, an uncle.

"there was no response from sarah that we could see, but we know that on some
level she was able to hear them and it helped give her a sense of peace and
closure," he said. she died four hours later."

"my regrets become distractions" - amy ray
"and as for the truth, it seems like we just pick a theory" - emily saliers
