subject: [ig-news] interview from the uk

[sherlyn's note: this message was originally sent to the indigo
girls mailing list at netspace.org.]

hiya,

thanks to a tip off from jen, here is the transcript of an interview
with the girls from bbc ceefax, page 568 (for those in the uk)...

indigo girls - music, activism, the lot, by michael hubbard.

atlanta's trailblazing duo the indigo girls have just released a new
album entitled become you.

amy ray and emily saliers are as well known in the us for their
campaigning social and political agenda as for their guitar-driven
folk-country music.

seventeen years after their debut, become you, is cause for a uk tour -
which is the duo's first in years.

we caught up with the girls at their london hotel for tea and a
natter...

compared to your other albums, how does become you differ?
emily:  there's less production on it.  it doesn't have loops or samples
and it's very organic.  some people say it feels a little rootsy,
perhaps due to production simplicity.

you each write you own songs on your albums.  why don't you write
together?
emily:  we have different sensibilities and might use different chords.
we arrange the songs instrumentally together.  we have collaborated
before, but this is just the natural way in which we operate.

you're here for the first time in years.  what do you like about the uk?
amy:  tea!  and our bass and keyboard players are from here.  we're tied
into a community.  and the interviews are usually better over here.
they're more provocative than in the us
emily:  i love some of the history.  like the bloomsbury group.  i'm a
virginia woolf fan.  and i love our fans from here.  they're very loyal.

you are known for being campaigning musicians with a social and
political agenda.  how do you prefer to be known?
emily:  it doesn't matter to me how we are known.  but it has changed
people's perceptions of us, i think.  not many musicians in the usa are
politically or socially active, but it's part of who we are.
our music and activist work are married, and we've used our music to
provide education and information.  if people are interested, that's
great.

how has your sexuality impacted upon your career and reactions to you?
amy:  in the mainstream rock press and radio it has really influenced
things.  for instance, we walk into a radio station and the music
director doesn't feel an affinity to us on a level of sexuality, because
he's not looking at us as potential prey.  i was told by one that rock
was about boys and guitars and boys wanting women, not about women
playing guitars.  he just said it!

how did indigo girls start?
emily:  we met at elementary school.  i was 10, amy was 9.  we were both
in the chorus and became friends, playing for our english class, then
moving on to play gigs.  we made a decision to make a career.
amy:  i remember seeing emily at lunch in the school cafeteria playing
guitar with all her friends gathered round her - it was pretty neat.

you've toured lots, but is there somewhere you'd still like to go?
emily:  asia, africa...
amy:  we'd like to go on vacation!

before the manics did it, you toured cuba.  what did you make of the
place?
amy:  the musicians are unbelievable.  i felt like i was always trying
to catch up and figure out where the down beat was.  there's so much
support for music from the government, but some forms of non-traditional
music don't get exposure over there.  everyone is much more expressive
and the literacy rate is 95 per cent.
emily:  there are no billboards or things for sale anywhere.
amy:  we heard some of the world's best percussionists in one small
area.  you can go round the corner to a tiny club and hear the best band
you have ever heard in terms of their soul and their musicianship.  it
was really inspiring.  and we were very privileged to hear it.

10 years on, will indigo girls be going for the foreseeable future?
emily:  i still love it.  i hope so.
amy:  there's so many experiences in life to be had but not to the
exclusion of indigo girls.  these experiences add new facets to what we
do together.

the new album by the indigo girls, become you, released on epic records,
is available in the shops now.

[...]

amy and emily both looked great and in good spirit. both have lost a lot of
weight and it appears they have this new vigor about them. so confident.
this is going to be an incredible summer. gotta save up those vacation days.
michele mallone opened up and she was great as always. i marked the tunes
below she sung with the girls (i think i got them all).

[...]

most didn't know the new stuff or if they did there was little reaction,
lots of clapping at the end though (there where a few loud cheers at the
start of a couple of emily's tunes). they started at about 9:20 and got off
just shy of 11pm. amy told us a little story how she started in ny and her
flights kept getting canceled/changed but she made it safely (and was
*searched* a lot, which was a good thing she said). she also mispoke the
first line of starkville and abruptly stopped and was saying outloud to
herself something like "now that ain't the lyric". it was funny. emily just
started over and was smiling.........

all and all, a fabulous night, a tight performance and the drive was only
2.5 hours so i'm not too tired today. have fun at the upcoming shows
everyone. don't miss them if you can get to a show.
