here's another good review at musictoday.com.  i especially like their
analysis of the girls' "symbiotically munificent relationship with their
rabid fanbase"

indigo girls
bowery ballroom
new york, new york
02.26.02

review by dave gil de rubio

amidst the trends of the past decadeboy bands, grunge, swing,
electronicathe indigo girls have stubbornly forged ahead with
their unique brand of confessional, harmony-driven folk-rock.
in the three years since their last album, 1999's star-studded
come on now social, amy ray released a solo debut (stag) on her
own daemon records imprint, while emily saliers grabbed some
time off. for their newly-released eighth studio outing, become
you, the georgia natives reunited with peter collins, producer
of 1992's rites of passage and 1994's swamp ophelia. fortunate
enough to have cultivated a symbiotically munificent
relationship with their rabid fanbase, the indigos recently
embarked on a quick and intimate promotional club tour that
found the duo playing an acoustic show at the bowery ballroom
before a house packed with vociferous admirers.

unrepentantly liberal at a time when george w. bush's approval
ratings are going through the roof, the left-leaning duo had
tables set up with sign-up sheets for favorite causes, including
honor the earth and the national youth advocacy coalition.
casually ambling out on stage with acoustic guitars at the
ready, the indigo girls opened up with "gone again," effectively
sweeping up the predominantly young, female audience with a
one-two punch of ray's trilling mandolin and saliers' twangy
banjo. delivering killer harmonies that never ceased to raise
goose bumps, the girls alternated on lead vocals throughout their
set. saliers stepped forward with her sweeter inflections on old
favorite "virginia woolf" and the delicate new "deconstruction,"
while ray's raspier style was equally impressive at the fore of
fresh material like the rollicking "become you" (with playful
harmonica substituting for the studio version's squeeze box) and
the equally infectious "yield." with such a supportive crowd on
hand, nostalgic nuggets were tossed out in the shape of fan
favorites "closer to fine," "galileo," and a stellar version of
"least complicated" that often found the crowd carrying a full
set of verses. wrapping up with an encore that featured an
extended version of "chickenman," along with a pair of new
cutsthe gently ruminative "she's saving me" and equally
vulnerable "moment of forgiveness"the indigos set the table for
an eagerly awaited return with a full band.

until then, stripped to the pure essence of acoustic guitars and
unadorned vocals, the indigo girls once again provided a reminder
of the immense depth of songwriting that continues to be
overlooked in an industry dominated by papier-mache talents and
studio artifice.
