20 questions for an indigo girl
by sonia murray
atlanta journal-constitution staff writer

twenty questions seemed too easy for the indigo girls, the melodic
wordsmiths. we needed scrabble or jeopardy or some other high-minded
activity for a pair sometimes slammed for letting their brains, rather than
their breasts, show.
nevertheless, before the folk duo's first major hometown concerts since the
release of their eighth cd, "become you," we prodded emily saliers into
letting us into her refrigerator, her fears and her secret desire to be a
quarterback, in what she would probably call a people magazine-like round of
20 questions:
q: which word or phrase do you most overuse?
a: probably "great!" i'm overly emotional and ebullient in that way.
q: what don't you say often enough?
a: anything in spanish. i've wanted to learn it for a while, but i just
haven't gotten down to actually doing it.
q: what is your greatest regret?
a: i can't think of any regrets. i figure it's all part of the picture of
life -- the choices you make, the things you do or don't do. . . .
q: greatest fear?
a: probably death, the loss of loved ones. a friend tried to tell me that
death wasn't serious, but i guess i'm not that evolved yet to agree.
q: which historical figure do you most identify with?
a: oh, my god, plenty, but i'd have to say jimmy carter. i just wish i could
be more like him. he's such a humanitarian, so very intelligent, very kind
and a southerner and proud of it. [congressman] john lewis, as well, for the
same reasons, and for his courage.
q: most treasured possession?
a: is your dog a possession? no, i'm not her owner, i'm just coexisting with
phoebe. one of my guitars then, my d-45 martin guitar.
q: greatest extravagance?
a: oh! good food and good wine. i eat in so many good restaurants and have
one myself [watershed, in decatur]. any place that focuses on really fresh
ingredients -- like, i had fiddlehead ferns in a dish the other day -- is
really good. that and a boutique wine, a red wine, yeah!
q: what do you have to have in your refrigerator?
a: gatorade. a lot.
q: which talent would you most like to have?
a: supreme athletic ability would be awesome. i'd like to be a quarterback.
that would be fun. or maybe play in the wnba.
q: have you ever played a sport?
a: no. it's always been a little too competitive, too intimidating. i was
always the songwriter, the woman alone in her room. sports were a little too
tough.
q: what do you like most about yourself?
a: i think i'm a good and decent person. i try to live my life as honestly
as possible and think about others and what i can do for them. i'm a pretty
good girl.
q: what is the trait you most deplore in others?
a: bigotry.
q: what is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
a: fear. whatever keeps me from doing things i might want to do, like
horseback riding. then there's my fear of danger and accidents and traumas.
. . . i'm a two-hands-on-the-wheel, eyes-two-feet-ahead-of-me kind of
driver. i'm a terrible passenger.
q: when and where were you happiest?
a: it doesn't take much for me. when i'm at home with my family, watching a
football game, playing, i'm happy. . . . but you know, when i see the human
spirit overcome wrong and injustice, i feel really great. i was just born
with a good disposition.
q: doesn't that make some people automatically angry with you?
a: i probably make some people sick. but hey, i'm a goofball. i'm not cool
or particularly sophisticated.
q: what is the quality you most like in a woman?
a: oh, man, there's a lot, but the first word that came to mind was
"mystery."
q: what is the quality you most like in a man?
a: honesty, emotional honesty.
q: why the difference?
a: men and women are different creatures. see, but that's the thing about
these "20 questions" -- it's all about wordplay, isn't it?
q: right. and songwriter that you are, that shouldn't be a problem. now,
what or who is the greatest love of your life?
a: [laughs.] no comment.
q: any guilty pleasure you'd like to share?
a: i said the good food and good wine thing already, right? you know, i try
not to do things that make me feel guilty, but maybe reading people magazine
and rolling stone qualify . . . it gives me an idea of what the pulse is for
that reader group. and everybody loves gossip!
