musicians join yucca mountain protest
chicago (ap) - the stars came out to protest a plan to store the nation's
nuclear waste in nevada. not many others did, though.

six protesters wearing identical t-shirts and carrying signs denouncing the
proposed yucca mountain storage facility were joined wednesday by members of
the indigo girls, the b-52s and midnight oil.

the bands, which were in town for concerts wednesday and thursday, came out
to urge the u.s. senate to strike down a plan to store all the nation's
nuclear waste in south-central nevada. the u.s. house of representatives
approved a similar measure in may.

although the proposed storage site lies almost 2,000 miles away from
illinois, the plan will affect the state.

the concentration of reactors on the east coast, the large number of active
reactors in illinois, and the state's role as a transportation hub means that
about 80 percent of the 72,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste to be
stored in yucca mountain will come through the state.

emily saliers of the indigo girls said she speaks out on these issues in the
hope that her star power will reach people who otherwise would not think
about the dangers of nuclear waste transportation and storage.

''it's been astonishing to me that such horrible public policy could be
passed without many people knowing about it,'' saliers said.

peter garrett, singer for the australian group midnight oil, said citizens
should be able to vote on whether they want a nuclear storage facility in
their back yard.

what fun to see ig in grant park this evening playing a free show with the
chicago skyline as a backdrop.  it was beautiful and the heat of the day
seemed to simmer down just in time.  this may have been my most laid back
show ever.  i sat on a blanket with friends way way back and just listened.
after 38 shows, it's amazing how enjoyable not rushing up front or going
crazy with seats and good angles can be.  i highly recommend it for your
next outdoor concert.

the girls played a decent set considering we knew it would not be a full
length concert.  they even complimented midnight oil for whom they followed
on stage.  never thought i'd see ig with them on the same bill.  i wish i
had more details about what they wore or how they looked but i honestly was
so far back that i never saw them.  there was definitely a huge crowd on
hand and most seemed pretty into the show.  girls were peppy and
appreciative of the usual sing-a-long areas of songs.

here's a list of what was played from memory and not in the right order
(sorry, not exactly my best review ever)  :)

bitterroot
power of two
get out the map
become you
yield
tried to be true
closer to fine (with guest appearance by lisa loeb and a chicago musician
whose name i can't remember--not kelly hogan)
virginia woolf
shame on you
least complicated
laramie
our deliverance (prefaced by emily talking about independence, peace and
july 4th--similar to what she said at 1st radio city show)
galileo

encore
go

i think that covers it.  sorry so lame but this is what happens when you
just sit back and take in the music with all its surroundings.  what a great
day in chicago!--greg

i have three tickets to the portland ig show on july 11. my sister has them,

the mezzanine. the cost is in the $30-35 range, i have to check for sure.

sorry to be so vague, but she keeps forgetting to give me the specifics.
email me if you are interested and i hope to have the details about the
tickets today.

peace,
laura
