review: indigo girls return to harmonious form

hollywood (variety) - with harmonies as heady as they are complex, the
indigo girls are still able to strike the right pop chord when they want.
but, as their delegation of loyal fans would say, they're simply deeper than
that.

their palace visit provided a clear view into the band's back-and-forth
career: flighty sing-along favorites with introspective lyrics that have
made them a college circuit fave and hardcore roots rock which radio
playlists have shunned despite that genre's recent renaissance.

no matter the battles amy ray and emily saliers have had trying to become
bigger than they are, the indigo girls have paved the way for the legion of
femme rockers (avril lavigne, michelle branch) fixated on pop principles and
chart-topping singles. their eighth studio album, "become you" (epic), is a
return to form: a mixture of looks at past romances and personal battles,
told either with sweetness or intensity.

ray is the gravelly voiced rocker whose tunes on monday -- the
mandolin-fueled "ozilline" and "yield" and especially the opener
"bitterroot" -- took care of the hardcore rock 'n' roll, while saliers
placated the devotees who seemed more comfortable with songs they know from
dorm rooms of days gone by. to that end, the band chose "power of two,"
"galileo," "watershed," "least complicated," "virginia woolf" and "tried to
be true."

a spirited performance by belgian brother-sister import k's choice kicked
things off. trying to find as strong a following as they have in europe,
band settled on, among other songs, "i'm not an addict, "i believe" and the
title song from their new album, "almost happy" (sony). they rejoined ray
and saliers later, with sarah bettens backing up "closer to fine" and bro
gert singing on "kid fears," a role taken on by michael stipe on the indigo
girls' self-titled debut back in 1989.

indigo girls; k's choice (the palace; 1,450 capacity; $30)

presented by clear channel. indigo girls: amy ray, emily saliers, carol
isaacs, brady blade, clare kenny. k's choice: sarah bettens, gert bessens,
eric grossman, bart van der zeeuw, jan van sichem, koen lieckens, erik
verheyden. reviewed july 15, 2002.

hey yall:

[...]

ks choice opened up for the girls and totally rocked.  they played
stuff from paradise in me, cocoon crash and some new stuff as wellthey
closed with an awesome version of  not an addict.  anywhoi was so
caught up in actually being in the same room with a&e and feeling that
incredible live show vibethose of you that have been to shows know what
im talking about that i totally forgot to make note of the set list
although i do recall:  bitter root, trouble, power of two, faye tucker,
become you, starkville, kid fears (with gert from ks choice), least
complicated, closer to fine (with sarah from ks choice), chickenman (no
soc though :-(), starkville, go,  deconstruction, yield, collecting you,
and hope alone.  they might have played one or two more but im not
certain.

fashion police report:

amy:  amy was in black jeans and a black short sleeved button down shirt
with what looked like dragons on it when they came out to play on a song
with ks choice.  she later changed into those bondage pants that seem
to be a topic of discussion as of late, and a black tank top *insert
sigh of appreciation here <g>*.  pigtail alert! :>d

emliy:  no wardrobe change for miss emily but she was looking very
comfortable in jeans, and a free leonard peltier t-shirt with blue short
sleeved button down shirt over it.

could not for the life of me see what they were wearing on their feet
though i feel confident enough to say that they were both wearing some
kind of footwear.

energy from the crowd was high and the girls seemed to be in good
spirits, and though emily seemed to be a bit tired at first, she perked
up as the show went onim sure she picked up on the festive mood of the
crowd.  people sang in the right spots, danced and were in a generally
good mood over all. one guy went along the railing in the venue and high
fived everyonehe was feeling pretty happy to be thereare you on the
list?

one funny exchange during the evening was when emily (or maybe it was
amy) asked the crowd if they had been gambling before the showwhen met
with a mixed response emily said something to the effect of going to
blow $2.00 on the nickel slots, then she stopped and asked if they even
had nickel slot machines anymore.  amy said that a friend of theirs won
$200,000 gambling a couple of years ago, but they dont gamble much when
theyre in vegas because they dont know how to gamble right and the
dealers keep yelling at them.

[...]

later,
karen
