music quarterly includes free cd
by don o'briant</a>

if you like to listen to music as well as read about it, one of the best deals
on the newsstands is paste, a decatur-based quarterly magazine that includes a
free cd sampler of works by famous and relatively unknown artists. the current
cd features 21 songs by ryan adams, steve earle, josh miller and nanci
griffith, among others.

the magazine itself is just as eclectic. "we didn't see any magazine out there
covering this kind of music," says editor josh jackson, "so we decided to start
one. our audience is people in their 20s and 30s and 40s who love new music,
not just nostalgic stuff from their youth."

articles include interviews and profiles of the famous -- indigo girls,
counting crows, lucinda williams, aimee mann -- as well as up-and-coming
artists.

"we value songcraft over style and depth over trendiness," jackson says, "and
while we see the adult alternative and americana formats as the most fertile
ground, there are amazing artists in the worlds of indie rock, alt-country and
electronica. that's why we're as excited about the chance to talk to dave
bazan, brian wilson and speech as we are chuck prophet, david wilcox and patty
griffin."
