have you ever seen people when they are surprised and they jump up and down
and make fools of themselves?  i always thought that could never be me...fast
forward to christmas eve when i was opening gifts, which is the tradition in
my gf's family...i opened what felt like an empty box.  it had a big envelope
in it with a certificate.  here is what it said, "you are invited to spend an
acoustic evening with the indigo girls, on february 12, 2003, at the pageant
in st. louis."  i was so surprised that my wonderful girlfriend (definateley
not an ig fan) had done this without me knowing and i didn't even know they
were coming to st. louis, that i screamed, jumped up and down, and yelled,
"oh, my god!," over and over and nearly knocked her down hugging her--and it
is all caught on tape!  i have not seen them acoustic since 1992, and that is
how i love them.  what a gift!!! 2nd row seats!  merry christmas to me!  just
wanted to share happy news!
peace,
toye

this is a little ot but i needed some opinions.  i'm
thinking of taking up a lesbian magazine but i was
wondering what any of you who already subscribe would
suggest?  i'm not even sure of all the different
publications out there but if anyone has one that they

to get some education on it before committing to one
for a whole year!

that's a good one.  "diva" is okay, it has good articles in it some times.  i suppose it depends where in the world you are.  there's also "girlfriends" and "curve".  i don't subscribe to any of them because most of the time there's hardly anything i would be interested in reading.  i think "curve" is the best one though.

all the songs on sweet relief ii were written by vic chesnutt, as that's who
the album benefitted.  others on the album include kristin hersh, rem and
garbage if i'm remembering correctly.

the original sweet relief album benefited victoria williams, a musician
without any health insurance who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.
i believe the 2nd album was to establish a fund for other artists in
need of medical care who couldn't otherwise afford it and that it wasn't
specifically going just to care for one person.=20

i got this press release off of the internet:
-scott

indigo girls, sarah mclachlan, dolly parton, joan baez 'respond' to domestic violence

the indigo girls, sarah mclachlan, dolly parton and joan baez are among the artists who appear on respond ii, a two-cd set due january 22, benefiting families affected by domestic violence.

other performers on the two-disc collection include tanya donnelly (breeders, belly), aimee mann, alternative all-woman rock band sleater-kinney, world music star angelique kidjo, blues guitar slinger susan tedeschi, avant-garde folkie ani di franco, plus suzanne vega, patty griffin, tracy bonham, odetta, julie miller, and sweet honey in the rock.

the benefit release comes from catalyst disc/signature sounds, distributed by koch, with all proceeds going to respond inc. and the family violence prevention fund(fvpf).

the set follows the first respond collection, issued in 1999, which raised more than $125,000. it featured juliana hatfield, mary lou lord, patty larkin, and 24 other artists.

since 1974, respond inc. has worked to end domestic violence, serving thousands of women each year with a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, a safe home program, and individual and group counseling sessions, as well as offering children's services, outreach, and a teen dating violence intervention program.

fvpf also aids women and children who are victims of domestic violence, partnering with health care providers and employers.

more information may be found at respondproject.org.

free to the first person who responds: one ticket to the amy ray/butchies show on january 16th at the cat's cradle in chapel hill, nc. i'll mail it to ya.

sometimes i am completely irrational when it comes to our favorite ladies. i mean, i live in boston for chrissakes. okay, so yeah, my sister lives near chapel hill...so the way my brain works is this: i'm thinking 'well, i've got a place to sleep within a half hour of the venue, i should go ahead and get a ticket and figure out how i will get there later!!!". so i did, but then i remembered i have a job, and responsibilities, etc. in the aforementioned boston.

silly, silly susie.

and if my tendency to ig show impulsiveness played out the same way, i'd be in big trouble on this upcoming tour since i grew up in indiana, went to college in kentucky and grad school in ohio and thus have a 'place to sleep' in *nine* of the upcoming tour date cities.

don't become like me, friends. become you.

make a banner for
the minneapolis show on 2/8 ?

i made a small ragtag one  tonight that reads "mn  loves indigo girls,"
(not enough room to spell the whole state!)  red on white
bed sheet, stapled to two wooden dowels....just an idea...

grammy preview
after snub, arie may be back on a georgia-flavored ballot

by sonia murray
atlanta journal-constitution pop music critic

the "voyage to india" by india arie could make her a strong candidate for grammy consideration.

  your turn
which georgia music act most deserves to win a grammy for their work last year?
  india arie 9% 260
  alan jackson 8% 219
  john mayer 3% 75
  usher 4% 108
  ludacris 1% 22
  tweet 1% 21
  indigo girls 1% 16
  tlc 65% 1879
  cee-lo 3% 78
who cares about the grammys? 8% 230
total votes   2908

  related:
- predictions for album, single of the year
- more pop music coverage

at least this time around, the question on folks' lips tomorrow morning definitely won't be "india who?"

at 8 a.m. tuesday when nominations for the 45th annual grammy awards are announced from madison square garden, the better question will be: will the stone mountain singer-songwriter finally get what she deserves?

last year only the globally beloved band of 23 years, u2, had more nominations than newcomer india arie, who topped a list of a 22 nominees with georgia connections.

but alas, the thoughtful lyricist with a beautiful debut of acoustic guitar-based affirmations went 0-for-7 on grammy night. her mother/designer was so, shall we say, amused by the shutout that, in the video for the recent single "little things" she dressed some of arie's co-stars in shirts with sevens turned the wrong way.

"because the grammys are backwards," she infamously explained.

well, assuming all things have been thrown back into alignment in the grammy universe -- and that rushing the release of her sophomore album, "voyage to india," to meet the cut-off period for eligibility pays off -- arie could be among another remarkable number of 2002 grammy nominees with georgia ties when the list is read on tuesday.

the other local artists the ajc music staff thinks should contend for a gramophone feb. 23 in new york are:

brendan o'brien. bruce springsteen created pop music's best post-sept. 11 handbook in the northeast atlanta studio of this local producer.

john mayer. coming up with a breezy singalong like "no such thing" and getting noticed by everyone from elton to carson should be enough pluses for this buckhead homeowner; but being invited to the grammy nominee press conference tomorrow -- that makes it almost a given this singer-songwriter-musician's getting something.

dallas austin. the low-key factor in the juggernaut that is pink, this buckhead producer laced "don't let me get me" and the pop-rocker's follow-up single "just like a pill" with incredibly amiable venom.

alan jackson. posing the musical question "where were you (when the world stopped turning)" prompted nearly 3 million people to reply with the purchase of this newnan native's latest cd, "drive."

angie aparo. as '80s r&b trio shalamar could have told this mcdonough singer-songwriter decades ago, the second time around is so much better, particularly when the single he wrote, swung and missed with landed in the hands of country-pop siren faith hill, who not only released "cry" as her first single but titled her current 2 million-selling cd the same.

usher. how one of the best r&b albums released in 2001 ("8701") garnered only a male r&b vocal grammy last year for the single "u remind me" is puzzling. but there's still time to make amends by noticing the alpharetta singer-actor's "u got it bad" or "u don't have to call."

ludacris. now that eminem has joined nelly as a mainstream favorite, maybe grammy will try to be all provocative again by noticing fayette county's own redd foxx of rap, his multimillion-selling "word of mouf," and its three breakout singles.

tweet. while the jury's still out on whether she still calls atlanta home -- or what she is really talking about (wink, wink) in her slithering bow "oops! (oh my)" -- there's little doubt both that hit single and her underappreciated debut ("southern hummingbird") merits one last gasp of grammy notice.

cee-lo. speaking of underappreciated, the solo bow from the fayetteville rapper ("cee-lo green and his perfect imperfections") was the engrossing soul, funk, rock stepchild of the hip-hop genre.

outkast. now that the duo has gotten grammy's ear in a major way -- witness last year's nomination for album of the year -- no one would be surprised if singles like "the whole world" (from the greatest hits cd) and "land of a million drums" (from the "scooby-doo" soundtrack) give andre "dre" benjamin another reason to pull a fruit-striped grammy-night ensemble out of the closet.

indigo girls. so consistently smart and understated they almost get overlooked, this decatur folk duo added yet another noteworthy release to the universe that included ruminations both timely (the confederate flag on title track "become you" ) and timeless (love, love and more love in "you've got to show" and "she's saving me").

tlc. like labelmates toni braxton and whitney houston -- who also have new cds with atlanta ties -- this trio didn't get its strong r&b adieu out in time to make the sept. 30 cut-off date. but there's always the single "girl talk."

jazze pha. be it his work with the nappy roots ("awnaw"), big tymers ("hood rich"), trick daddy ("in da wind") or baby ("do that ") this producer-singer-rapper had the whole country bouncing to unabashedly southern twang.

hey all. i've rejoined the list after a couple years absence and i have a
question.  i seem to remember reading some long time ago that amy and emily
have pledged to read all their fan mail.  is this true? i wonder how much
they get.
also, has anyone ever received a response/acknowledgement/form
letter/restraining order after sending the girls mail?  i just sent amy a
letter and two copies of my book at russell carter artist mgmt, and i would
love to know whether i can realistically expect any of them to be read.  i'd
just like to know that someone (hopefully amy) will read the letter before it
gets recycled.  i'm guessing that a reply would be out of the question.
at any rate, i'm happy to be back.  anyone remember the old list campaign
to buy emily's piano at that honor the earth auction and donate it somewhere?
i think it was the list, though the bbs was involved too. those were good
times.  has anything else like that happened since?

there is also a fillmore in denver co. it used to be called the mammoth

concert video vhs/dvd, it was filmed in denver. there was a tv show i
believe shown in ca that highlighted a show at the fillmore in san fran.

the movie was okay.  but i didn't really like the book...without giving it
away, the movie is about three women, living in three different time periods
who are somehow connected to the book mrs. dalloway and who are all
searching for more meaningful lives in some aspect or another.  nicole
kidman plays virginia woolf, who is in the process of writing mrs. dalloway
(which, if you haven't read it or seen the movie, chronicles a single day in
which mrs. dalloway is planning a party); julianne moors plays laura brown,
who is a post-wwii housewife and mother struggling with her own depression
and suffering, basically, from what friedan later termed "the feminine
mystique," (i.e. isn't there more to life than being a wife and mother?),
who becomes totally enveloped in woolf's writings.  streep plays clarissa,
who lives in nyc in current times who is totally in love with her best
friend and former lover richard who is dying of aids.  richard has nicknamed
clarissa "mrs. dalloway," as she is sort of a modern day mrs. dalloway, and
her story is focused around a party she is planning to celebrate richard's
recent literary accomplishments.  there is another connection between the
women, aside from "mrs. dalloway," but that's all i will say...personally, i
thought the book was kind of flawed, in a couple of aspects regarding the
connections between the women, but i can't delve into them without ruining
the endings...but i believe it won a pulitzer, so what do i know?

anyhow, in ig terms, the whole story made me think of the line "a telephone
line through time," because really, thats what its about...how a book can
touch different people in different times and how its readers all share a
mutual connection.

i haven't seen it either...though i thought oberlin *wouldn'* go through
ticketmaster i suppose its possible.

the other cleveland area show is already on sale.  i still havent bought tix
yet though- its gen adm.

does anyone have jill's address (does anyone remember her?  could you even
forget?), i've not gotten an answer from that old one.  she would certainly
know about the show even if she graduated.

i think there is (was?) another listee who went to oberlin and who has
probably not graduated yet...becky...was that her name?

hi everyone,

just wondering if anyone knows when the oberlin college date goes on sale -
the ig's website indicates that sales are via ticketmaster but they are not
posted on the website.

i haven't seen the movie, but i just finished the book yesterday.  i was
blown away by the book.  i thought it was quite effective.  it was very
woolfian, in that it played on these ideas of connections and influence
that transcend time, just like virginia woolf's work.

i was listening to the song "virginia woolf" earlier today and thinking
how brilliant it is.  weathering "the storm of cruel mortality" is
something that woolf and her characters struggled with.  there is this
constant image in the song of virginia influencing emily, but also of
emily influencing virginia; with the whole "the apathy of time laughs in
my face, and you said 'each life has it's place'" and "the apathy of
time laughed in your face, did you hear me say, 'each life has it's
place'".  the exchange is the same, but the speaker changes.  if
virginia woolf were a songwriter, she would've written this song.  but
she probably would've called it "emily saliers".  and as long as emily
doesn't head down to the river with rocks in her pocket, we'll all be
fine.
