like jeremy, i've read the book but not seen the movie.

i think that cunningham does a good job of pastiche in his writing,
especially in capturing a similar rhythm to woolf, but as far as the
historical accuracy / plausibility of the flashbacks to vsw's life, there
were at least a few "howlers" that would be apparent to any good woolf
scholar, or at least serious reader.

orlando, with tilda swinton, did a good job of visually capturing the
richness and imagination of woolf, a few years ago.

could someone tell me about virginia woolf?  of course i know who she is
and i know the ig song well.  i have read lots of emily's references to
it in interviews and such.  still, i have this hungry curiosity about
her and what makes her so intriguing to so many people (especially
people that i admire so much).  i don't mean to ask elementary questions
but i am rather ignorant about her life and it's impact.  all i know is
what i learned from what emily has writtin.  was virgina woolf a
lesbian?

for those interested in virginia woolf, i would recommend "virginia
woolf for beginners" by aaron rosenblatt.  it is "the definitive
documentary comic book on the life and times of the most confusing and
fascinating literary woman of the century."  it's both entertaining and
informative, and since it is loaded with witty illustrations, it is also
a very quick read.

because i love you all, i want you to get $$, even though my share might be
less:

anyone who bought a cd (or a record or a cassette) between 1995 and 2000 is
eligible to claim his portion of the settlement by signing up before 3 march
2003; not even a receipt is necessary. consumers can simply go to the cd map

filing a claim, and supply the requested information.

it says if too many people sign up, and the award (if any) divided among
that many people < $5, nobody will get anything and it will all go to a
music charity. so that's probably what'll happen.

got taken to a book- on amazon- by belva plain - my mil has that!) then dar
williams, chieftains, vonda shephard and red delicious. it would be
interesting to follow that path a little further when i have the time -

english, folky rocky band for most of the 1990s. there's a webpage about 'em

they're not really ~similar~ to the indigo girls, except that they're both

first of all yay i got a seat in row a for the milwaukee concert, secondly,

floating around out there?

thank-you neil. i am sad not to have heard of them before, especially as i
live in england :-)

i like crowded house, rem and fairport too, on that basis and judging by the
instruments they played this *someone* would be very happy to have a sample
mix cd :-)). i am imagining a band something like tarras, maybe?

btw - just for fun i put in all sorts of combinations of bands - jethro
tull, fairport (makes sense now) status quo, whitesnake and others - and
almost without fail the second or third suggestion given was eden burning! i
was almost looking for the small print that said 'website sponsored by eden
burning' ;-))

thanks again neil

this is ridiculous.  the only bands i pull up are eden burning and
alien ant farm.   i did ig, the who and barenaked ladies - and got
eden burning.  i did ig, stevie wonder and aretha franklin - and got
alien ant farm.

finally, i put in jen lucero, jude hunter and brian clary.

i got back alien ant farm.

ooooooh, now that brings back some memories!
as far as i can recall ....  we're talking a 1970s german band here ......
the one album i have of their's is folky, acoustic, not sure if it was
original material or very old trad/medieval stuff.
wonder where it is? if i can find it i'll let you know more.

i have a large blue shed your skin shirt.  it's the
one with the bird at the top and dancing people and
ribbons that run across that say "indigo girls" in the
middle and "shed your skin" at the bottom.  i have a
picture if someone wants to see it.  it has been worn
and washed 5-10 times so the silk screen is not
perfect, but the shirt is in great condition.

i want to trade this for a boot or two.  preferably on
cd and preferably of either ember swift, edie carey,
or melissa ferrick, but if you have something else
make me an offer.

i also have an excellent condition, large, off-white
lilith fair shirt from 1998 (which i also have a
picture of) that i want to trade.

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

so i know we can't, like, talk about this onlist or anything, but since amy and
emily are such ardent anti-death penalty activists, i thought people might at
least want to know about it.

mandy,
missing the discussion of substantive issues like cruise ships

chicago, illinois (cnn) -- outgoing illinois gov. george ryan announced
saturday that he had commuted the sentences of all of the state's death row
inmates and said he would "sleep well knowing i made the right decision."

he delivered his unprecedented speech at northwestern university.

"our capital system is haunted by the demon of error: error in determining
guilt and error in determining who among the guilty deserves to die. what
effect was race having? what effect was poverty having?

"because of all these reasons, today i am commuting the sentences of all death
row inmates," ryan said.

ryan's decision affects 156 inmates on death row in illinois and 11 others who
have been sentenced to death but who were not in the custody of the department
of corrections because they are awaiting re-sentencing or trials in other
cases. some were also in other states' custody.

ryan, a republican who did not run for re-election in november, acknowledged
during his speech that his actions would not be universally applauded. but he
said he felt he had no choice but to strike a blow in "what is shaping up to be
one of the great civil rights struggles of our time."

ryan, who leaves office monday, pardoned four death row inmates friday after
determining they had been tortured into confessing crimes they did not commit.

madison hobley, leroy orange and aaron patterson were released after being
pardoned. another inmate, stanley howard, remained in prison because he had
been convicted of a separate crime.

inmates who have been convicted but not yet sentenced or who have been remanded
for a new trial are not included in the commutations, a source in the
governor's office said.

all but three of the commutations will reduce the inmates' sentences to life
without parole; the remaining three will be reduced to 40 years to life to
bring their sentences in line with co-defendants.

gov.-elect rod blagojevich, the democrat who will replace ryan, told cnn on
saturday that he disagreed with the governor's decision.

"i think a blanket anything is usually wrong," blagojevich said. "we're talking
about convicted murderers, and i think that is a mistake."

capital punishment in illinois came under the microscope after a group of
journalism students at northwestern began looking into the case of anthony
porter in the late 1990s.

the students, working with their professor and a private investigator, found
evidence that cleared porter after 17 years on death row. ryan vowed he would
do whatever it took to "prevent another anthony porter."

ultimately, 13 inmates who had been sentenced to death were exonerated, and
ryan declared a moratorium on executions in the state.

a panel ryan appointed to examine capital punishment and review the cases of
all death row inmates concluded last year that illinois had applied capital
punishment too often since it was re-established in the state in 1977.

prosecutor: 'they've had their years in court'
friday's pardons, coupled with early word that the governor was planning to
issue commutations, sparked outrage from prosecutors and family members of
victims.

"i believe that he is wiping his muddy shoes on the face of victims, using them
as the doormat as he leaves his office," said peoria county state's attorney
kevin lyons on cnn's newsnight. "it says much more about george ryan than it
does about the death penalty."

ollie dodds, whose daughter died in the fire hobley was convicted of setting
and remains convinced he is responsible, said, "this brings back memories just
like it happened."

lyons accused ryan of arrogantly substituting his own judgment for those of
juries and courts that have imposed and upheld the death sentences, assuming
that "none of us get it but him."

"everybody has had not their day in court, they've had their years in court,"
lyons said. "it's shameful that the victims of this state, in fact, have to not
fear the courts, not the defense lawyers, not the defendants, but they have to
fear their very own governor."

ryan said he decided to pardon the four men rather than commute their sentences
to life because he is convinced they did not commit the crimes that sent them
to death row. all four men say they were tortured by police.

'thank god this day has finally come'
hobley, 42, who was convicted of killing seven people, including his wife and
son, in a fire in 1987, said the pardon was a "dream come true."

thank god that this day has finally come," he said after being released from a
state prison in pontiac.

orange, 52, who was condemned after being convicted of four murders in 1985,
said he felt "alive" as he walked out of the cook county jail on friday.

"i didn't believe it when i first found out about it," he said. "thank you with
all my heart and soul."

patterson, 38, said he's "going to do all right" after walking out of the
pontiac prison. he was sentenced to die for the murder of a chicago couple in
1986.

all four are part of a group of 10 death row prisoners who claim they were
tortured into giving confessions under the direction of then-chicago police
commander jon burge. he was fired after internal police investigators found
systemic evidence of physical abuse of suspects.

i hope the families of the victims of these murderers sleep well also.

if this issue were so important to him why did he wait until he was the
outgoing governor and he wouldn't have to suffer the political consequences
of this action?

you can bet if he were up for re-election he never would have this.  typical

gov. ryan said he would have commuted the sentences regardless of his term
status.  he was convinced by the overwhelming evidence that innocent
people were serving time on death row and he did not want to risk even one
of them being put to death.

whether one is for or against the death penalty, cases have shown time and
time again that the illinois justice system is broken and needs to be
fixed before they ever consider putting anyone to death again.

continuing the nigc (sorry), i must object to this.   i know i am completely
cynical when it comes to any politician.  however, there is no way former
governor ryan deserves to be commended for anything.  his blanket clemency
on all il death row inmates is definitely a bold step.  however, it is also
a clear attempt to mask his other massive scandals and create a legacy so he
doesn't leave office in shame.  local illinois folk will certainly recall
that he was secy of state during the biggest licenses for bribes scandal and
is currently under federal investigation for his role there.  so any praise
for any politician needs to be taken with a large helping of salt.

personally  i'm not in favor of  the death penalty myself, and am glad
that the governor is doing what he's doing....yes it would have been
nice if
he had acted sooner, but he didn't. that's the part that should be taken
with a <<a large helping of salt.>>

for once, someone is listening to criticism of the death penalty....and
that to me is a step in the right direction, regardless of their reason
behind it.

hey-
amy bloom's book of short stories, "even a blind man can see how much i love

reading, however. she writes about lesbians and transgendered individuals
without being a 'lesbian transgender author,' if you know what i mean. lucid,
striking prose--nice.
