i have some cds that need new homes. here's the deal: you can have them each
for $3 a piece, or buy the whole lot for $12. plus, i'll throw in a few extra
surprises if you buy the lot of them. that price includes shipping. i just
want them out of my house and in someone's cd player.

i would also love it if someone could put temptation on their site. i am
also looking for the following new songs.
put it aside (give in)
let me go easy
they both are on the ftp part of brian's web site. i cannot access that
from my pc here at work. firewalls, or something else that work has done
with the networks, are not allowing me in. so if anyone has these somewhere
that i can get them from i would be super appreciative.

as some of you may know, i work for the national headquarters of planned
parenthood federation of america. we are hosting a special benefit
performance of the off-broadway "alterna musical" betty rules! on tuesday,
january 28, 2003 at 7:30 p.m.
betty rules follows the band's 17-year rock n' roller coaster ride on the
music scene. now, their hyper-rock music, high-octane personalities and
wild tales from the dark side of fame are rocking the roof off the zipper
theatre in the all new betty rules!, directed by michael grief (rent). for
those of you who are unfamiliar with betty, they are a super cool feminist,
pro-gay, pro-choice trio of talented women.
there will be complimentary wine and beer before & after the show and a
special talk-back discussion with the creators and performers of betty rules
after the show.
the ticket price of this event is $50 for the general public, but i am
extending our special "family and friends of ppfa" discount to those of you
on the ig list who wish to attend. the discounted ticket price is $30 and
all proceeds will benefit planned parenthood federation of america.
to purchase tickets by credit card, please call me at 212-261-4535. you
will not be able to purchase tickets for this special benefit anywhere else.
seats are filling up pretty quickly, so if you are interested, i encourage
you to call as soon as possible.
for more information on the show or the band, please go to
www.bettyrules.com
thanks a lot and i hope to see some of you on tuesday!

hkfs,
sadly i won't be able to make it to the chicago theater concert. i've
got two really good 3rd row inner isle seat tickets that i need to sell.
thing is since i live in illinois i can't sell them on ebay for more than
the printed ticket price. that sucks for me since i bought them from a
broker on ebay for $212. so that's what i'm selling them for to recoupe
what i paid out. if you're interested, email me privately. i'll pay for
the overnight delivery charges.

notes from amy
the future of music is now
a field report with ian and patti
1-09-03
i went to the future of music policy summit in d.c. this past weekend.
it's an important event that left me chock full of knowledge =96some i
want, some i don't.
now, i wonder if music should even be a commodity. i tell myself, its
not the music itself that we sell, it's the energy and time spent on the
recording and touring, the paper, the plastic, the "bits". while part of
the conference focused on how to commodify these "bits" (who has the
right to make money and how do make money, what is the future of our
ability to make money); the other time was spent looking at the activism
around protecting the airwaves, the internet, artists' spaces, and our
right to freely create.
the panelists at the three day conference included artist, lawyers,
managers, retail and internet entrepreneurs, music industry officials,
and u.s. government representatives. with the panels covering everything
from the basic rudiments of a career in music to the most esoteric
discussion on intellectual property rights, one thing kept ringing true
for me. it's all about the gatekeepers and unfortunately most of the
gatekeepers are huge corporations or government departments who can't
afford your freedom of expression.
its hard to articulate what i have come away with. really, at this point
it's just a bunch of impressions. ian mackaye (founder of dischord
records, producer, and member of the band, fugazi) noted that "music is
a river and people will always bottle the water and sell it to you,
saying you can't drink from the river because the river is polluted."
he's got a point, there is nothing stopping us from gathering together
and playing music, with and for each other. sometimes we have to get
creative about the space and time, but music does freely exists.
many of the artist at the conference were mostly interested in how to
access resources and the bare essentials of building a career in music.
unfortunately this discussion was often framed by the question, "how can
we make money?," rather than "how do we build a music community that is
rich and active?"
there was an overwhelming sentiment from the older folks that the
business was doomed, and this somehow translated into the idea that the
quality of music is degenerating,-"they don't write them like they used
to" attitudes. i hate that attitude. i am sure there were plenty of
older optimists but the hysteria from the doom's dayers was enough to
almost drown out any hope. there is nothing worse than an aging cynic,
who seems to me, to be begging for the generation gap that he/she so
valiantly fought against.
patti smith wanted to talk about the coming war against iraq. she asked
a very important question when she said. "where are you? where are the
people that will speak out against this war. we are on a brink of a war
that is unnecessary, that will cause great heartache, that will not
cause any global dialogue. we are just sitting around, where is our
voice. i beg all of you out there to take a stand. and that doesn't mean
throwing a song in your set; we need you to stand up and speak , we need
to start a global antiwar movement. i noticed the ad in the new york
times that a multitude of artist signed onto, calling for protection
against napster.
this ad cost tons of money. if these people can get together to protect
their royalties why are they not taking out ads against the war. every
missile has each of our names etched upon it. do you want your name
etched there. where are you people."
i really appreciated this observation and question. i have pondered the
actions of the recording artist coalition and their work to protect
artist from being exploited by the entertainment industry. the members
of the rac that are most visible and vocal are the high profile members
who have had very successful major label recording careers.
yes, the rac is trying to tackle the important issues of compensation,
health care, and general major label shenanigans; but there are other
community based groups who are working on these same issues with more
emphasis on protecting our voice and our freedom of expression,
nurturing the local music scenes, and encouraging artist activism that
extends beyond their own careers. frankly i find this is to be a more
genuine and satisfying approach.
i can't argue that the rac's issues are not important and ultimately it
takes all kinds of work to change things, but its hard to stomach this
self serving newly found political activism from some of the members of
rac with their notoriously high ticket prices and unwillingness to get
involved in other political issues. in the end patti smith said,
although she appreciates the royalties that pulled her and her family
through hard times, it is hard for her to get wrapped up in the
questions around free downloading and compensation, with the huge
problems that exist in the world.
and ian echoed the sentiment by reminding us that there are countries
and cultures where the word for musician is not even part of the
language, because saying, "i'm a musician." is pretty much like
saying,,"i breathe."
there is no question that we have become so insular in the u.s. , and so
focused on our own rights to compensation, that we forget the heart and
soul of who we are. its hard to be zen and to hold in your head three
ideas at once-the idea that musicians have a right to compensation for
the work they do, the technical details of how the music industry
operates, and the concept that music does have a certain
spiritual/mystical origination and should be consumed freely.
but really, what is the music industry, who is the music industry? the
music industry should be made up of artist and music fans, and it should
be trying to balance the commodity of music with the essence of music.
the major label industry is one that i really can't relate to anymore.
but there is another industry, the independent industry, and it can also
be affected by legislation around radio, performance royalties, and
sampling laws, as well as anti-music politicians.
we need to know what's going on, so we can protect our musical
environment. i heard many encouraging stories at the conference of the
battles won in the name of music. seattle lived for years with laws
against postering and teen dancing as well as strict noise ordinances
that threatened to stomp out their music scene. this was all changed by
artists, music fans, and civic leaders working hard for a music friendly
town. the fcc enabled radio to be taken over by payola hungry,
corporations snuffing out free expression.
and now the fcc is considering lifting ownership caps on radio stations.
senator feingold (d-wi) is proposing some serious radio reform
legislation. the legislation would fight the damage that has already
been incurred by the1996 telecommunications act. feingold's proposed
radio reform came about when a handful of his constituents met with him
and demonstrated how radio consolidation had negatively affected the
diversity of voices heard in their area, and had caused a huge decline
in local community programming.
in both of these instances it did not take thousands to make change, it
took a handful of concerted individuals to start the ball rolling and
then the legitimacy of the campaigns took over. the fcc needs to hear
from all of us, our local radio stations need to hear from all of us,
and our music scenes need support.
i think the consolidation of radio, retail, media outlets and concert
promoters has helped to separate the musician from the audience. when i
was coming up through the scene-the community included clubs, radio,
media, and local record stores. we all felt part of something and for
this reason we bought the records rather then just taping them. patti
smith made an interesting comment about this and how it applies to free
downloading.
she said that, "we are going through a transition. for too long there
has been separation between rock and the people. people are being
momentarily empowered. they are downloading, copying, collecting trying
to cut the distance between themselves and the artist". i would add that
people are also reacting to the music industry's greed and self
importance. but as the conference lawyers kept saying the jeanie is out
of the bottle and what do we do now?
as for me, i am going to keep creating and playing music; and daemon is
going to keep providing an infrastructure for artist and fans. i am
going to follow all the upcoming legislation and i am going help protect
the outlets we have left for community voice and information. to insure
the success of any activism, we need to protect our channels of
communication and our ability to congregate.
there is a lot to keep track of, i have only skimmed the surface. the
future of music coalition has a great web site (www.futureofmusic.org)
where you can get the lowdown on the whole policy summit. you can learn
all sides of the debates around telecommunications policy legislation,
copyright law, intellectual property rights, performance royalties,
health insurance, and digital sampling. more importantly you can learn
how you can become involved in the movement to protect our voices.

hi...i thought i'd put this out here one more time. i still have two sets of good tickets available for the madison show. i'm selling them for face value, plus the tm charges ($74.50 per pair).
one pair is row c (9th row) seats 145 & 146 (floor - right on the aisle).
the other pair is row d, seats 207 & 208 (circle seats - the balcony at the civic center starts over the floor at row 8, so these are good seats as well).
let me know asap if you're interested so i can get them out to you.

barb and all,
thanks for sharing the new notes with us! i was
*really* surprised and proud to hear amy mention
senator russ feingold since he's my representative.
makes me proud to think i voted for the man.
wisconsin is a very split state, just barely
democratic but russ feingold has some great new ideas
and he honestly stands up for what he believes in.
it's refreshing and sadly not seen enough in politics.
just wanted to say thank you and cheer on the radio
revolution! peace and love!
