it's the acoustic duo tour, so i assume it's just the two of them. neko case
is the opener - she's pretty good. <http://www.nekocase.com/>
i wish cordero and kim richey were opening in lexington. :)

go ! she is hard to explain - she's not like anyone
really, she has a unique style of her own. she's a
very very talented singer/songwriter with a beautiful
voice. her music is kinda country, kinda rock. i don't
think she leans in a particular direction. i just
think she plays and writes whatever she wants. i read
one review by a critic saying she is like lucinda
williams/bonnie raitt/aimee mann rolled into one,
whatever that means. all i know is that she is good.
see her if you can. she had an awesome band backing
her when i saw her this past november. on song somes
she would play solo acoustic though.

did with the author of "ttv" and affinity/fingersmith,
sarah waters. i dunno if boots are readily available

fingersmith and can't put it down! well, except to

anyway, if anyone can help me obtain a copy i'd be

see some of you at the madison show on tuesday! i'm
*sooo* psyched. (but who isn't when their concert
finally comes up?) peace and much love!

she's a country-leaning singer-songwriter of great talent, in my opinion! and
she's earthy and real. she sang a wxpn outdoor show a few years back, wearing
black leather pants and she was getting hot by the time she was over at the
autograph booth. as she chatted and signed for my partner, she commented: "it
sure is hot; my lips are sweatin'! haha, i don't think she was talking about

mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
hey all! i haven't posted here in about a billion years... due to someone
backing out on me, i have one ticket available for the bloomington, in
show this coming monday, feb. 10. this seat is in the third row -- row 3,
seat 2 (you can find a seating chart at
<http://iuauditorium.com/upload/images/orch.gif)>; it's kind of over to the
side, but i've been pretty close to that spot before and it's definitely
not so far over that you have to crane your neck to see or anything --
it's a really great seat. (you do have to sit next to me, but i'm not an
axe murderer or anything, i promise!)
i'll willingly eat the ticketmaster charges and let you have the ticket
for the $30 face value -- i may consider lower offers as well, 'cause i
hate to let such a lovely seat go to waste. (especially if you can throw
in a boot or some cookies or something! *grin*) i can't offer crash space
for out-of-towners, but can certainly help you find a place to stay,
directions to the venue, etc.
please reply directly to me at ahaines@indiana.edu and not to the list.
thanks!

i'm crawling out of the woodwork very slowly to say
that i have the original copy of the mpls sst show.
however, it is not on cdr, it's on tape. first gen

i'd be willing to get a couple of copies out there on
tape as i don't have the capability of converting to
cdr at this time. or if there's someone out there
willing to transfer it to cdr we could see if there'd
be interest enough for a tree.

someone here quoted kim richey, by coincidence, kim richey was a guest on the last "austin city limits" show that featured indigo girls. ig were on for the first half hour, richey was on for second. she is good country singer-songwriter. i've been impressed with her for years.
she co-wrote the radney foster hit country song "nobody wins" and the tricia yearwood song off of the album "thinkin' about you" called "those words we said." she has also released solo albums and she recorded her own verison of "those words we said". here are some lyrics from that song:
no matter how i try
i can't get far enough away
every sad song on my radio
sounds like it's custom made
i recently began reading a collection for lesbian short stories called "close calls". i enjoyed the stories i had read so far. yesterday, because i was home sick(just like emily), i continued reading. i came across rhomylly b. forbes's "when you wish upon the moon" and oh my goodness, was that a story. it starts with a character (who identifies herself as a dyke) who meets her old girlfriend because she needs help. from there, it becomes funny, touching and believe it or not, magical. the story was a complete original.
i do not know if this qualifies as a recommendation but i really enjoyed the story and had to share with someone. i'm feeling better by the way. maybe the story helped. ;)

i suppose i am little late at resonding to this topic, as my mail has
been down, but in case you are interested some of the history behind the
idea explains why money is a no-no. basically in the days before
everyone had means to duplicate cds, there was tape trading but i don't
figure it was on the scale that cd-rs are being done today, so you found
more of your mom and pop cd stores selling bootleg cds often desinated
as "rare collectibles." so a lot of people were making a ton of cash
selling these bootlegs. the bands got nothing and more importantly to
the bigwigs of the record companies were getting nothing. so any money
being exchanged for a bootleg was not cool. then bands began to see
correlation between people trading performances and attendance at live
shows, then comes the idea of allowing people to record shows, so
performances became easier to get, and easier to bootleg, so groups like
the grateful dead for example had to adopt strict policies surround the
taping and distribution of shows. it was a two-edged sword so to speak.
the more people heard the live shows, the more people were coming to see
them live in person but the more access the more easy it was that
bootlegs were showing up in record shops or worse yet in the parking
lots of venues, which is still a problem. the bottom line was that any
money was a violation of a copyright law, regardles of whether is was to
cover the cost of the tapes that were being traded. in other words
wether
you take a loss or make a profit money is money. so you come to today
and taping/trading policies have evolved to encompase the digital age,
many people have servers and access to shows is easier than ever, funny
thing is if you read the fine print of trading policies by the grateful
dead, they are fine with people trading shows over the "net" however any
site that does it cannot have any commercial gain, so if you have
advertising banners for instance on your site then you are violating the policy.
and the bottom bottom line is that we should all respect the feelings of
the band and if that band says that no money should be exchanged only
media then regardless of how convenient it is or isn't, you should
probably adhere to what they think and with that said here is a short
segment of the phish taping policy:
> all taping must be for personal use only, which may include trading (via analog or digital
> tape, cd, or digital file transfer). recordings may be traded only for an equivalent
> amount of similar media (cassettes or cds, pre-recorded or blank)..........
> regardless of any expenses incurred, no
> money may ever be exchanged as part of a trade; however, stamped, self-addressed
> envelopes may be included with blank media. in addition, the media by which audio
> trading is publicized may not be commercialized. therefore newsletters, web sites, clubs,
> or any other communication forum facilitating audio trading cannot accept advertising,
> offer links for compensation, exploit databases compiled from their traffic, or otherwise
> derive any commercial proceeds in any form. stores or businesses may not offer to
> duplicate phish media for customers or sell or otherwise provide media containing
> unreleased phish music for any price. a statement of compliance with this policy must be
> clearly posted on all web sites engaged in trading activity.
with all that said, i am off and on a avid trader with somewhere on the
order of 1500 discs worth of shows etc. i say trade on, let your
conscience be your guide. if you were curious as to whether a band
allowed taping or not, check here, its lazily updated but fun nonethe less:

london (reuters) - a controversial russian pop duo accused of targeting the "dirty old man market" with lesbian kisses and schoolgirl outfits, shot to the top of the british singles chart sunday, the official uk charts company said.
tatu's debut single, "all the things she said," has already proved popular in the rest of europe, claiming the no. 1 spots in switzerland, italy and spain. it moved up 176 places to no. 1 in its second week in the uk charts, the official uk charts company said.
the band's name translates as "this girl loves that girl."
in the music video julia volkova and lena katina wear school uniforms and kiss and cuddle. child protection charity kidscape accused the pair of "targeting the dirty old man market."
british daytime television hosts, husband and wife team richard and judy, branded their antics "pedophile porn" and called for them to be banned.

i don't really see any similarities between tatu and ig, other than the fact
that all four women identify as lesbians. for all that they're so very much an
out band, ig don't trade on sex at all - their queerness is more about identity
politics and fighting for equality. in centemporary russian culture, women can
hardly escape being sexualized, and that very much in terms of the male gaze.
these two, far from being an exception, seem to be trading on that - i would
liken them more to two women getting it on in a porn flick (and i don't mean
dyke porn) than to indigo girls. especially saince it doesn't look like they
write their own songs.
so yeah, no way this pair is anything like the indigo girls. too bad, too;
russians could probably use some role models in amy and emily's molds, for all
the reasons above.

> all i know is that "tatu" is not russian for "this girl loves that girl"

at first i thought it might be an acronym, but i couldn't work it out.

fyi, i don't know as fans can rely on hearing the gospel truth when it comes
to concert cancellations. i worked for a major promoter in the past and we
had several instances where shows had to be cancelled for a variety of
reasons, such as poor ticket sales or weird technical problems or artist
transportation issues, and the party line for show cancellation was that the
artist was ill. this is the most "acceptable" reason for a cancelled or
postponed show, thus it was the one given. emily may truly be under the
weather, but if she's not, this "line" would not be coming from her or amy
anyway, it would be coming from the concert promoter or sponsor of the
show(s).
i remember seeing the girls in boston a million years ago (okay, it was
winter 1991) and amy had a bad cold but was still out there breaking strings
and re-tuning her own guitar, in the days before sully. she was apologetic
and joked that they were on "the phlegm tour." :-)

hey all-
as much as it pains me to miss it, i am just not going to be able to
attend the 2/18 show at the grand old opera house. therefore, if anybody
needs a ticket (parquet section row a seat 23 -- first row of the
section behind the pit - way amy's side), you can have/buy mine or
whatever. i think it was about $35 or something like that. anyway, if
you're interested shoot me an email (offlist), so we can work out the
arrangements for getting the ticket to you. and don't panic if i don't
reply terribly swiftly, i'm pretty busy these days- hence the reason i
have to miss the show- but i will get back to you, i promise!

i'd never compare this duo to the musical and lyrical genius of ig , there is no comparison.
i doubt that they're lesbians, that looks more like a publicity stunt, it works well though. it's not my cup of tea at all but, i'm pleased to see anything that's gonna give britney a run for her money. lol ....cos if you don't you'll cry. flash in the pan me thinks.
p.s i'm pretty sure there are people in russia that know of the indigo girls and like their music.

mandy burton <eburton@uchicago.edu> wrote:i don't really see any similarities between tatu and ig, other than the fact
that all four women identify as lesbians. for all that they're so very much an
out band, ig don't trade on sex at all - their queerness is more about identity
politics and fighting for equality. in centemporary russian culture, women can
hardly escape being sexualized, and that very much in terms of the male gaze.
these two, far from being an exception, seem to be trading on that - i would
liken them more to two women getting it on in a porn flick (and i don't mean
dyke porn) than to indigo girls. especially saince it doesn't look like they
write their own songs.
so yeah, no way this pair is anything like the indigo girls. too bad, too;
russians could probably use some role models in amy and emily's molds, for all
the reasons above.

at first i thought it might be an acronym, but i couldn't work it out.

well, there's one - my friend aryuna and i swapped favorite bands (i own three
cds by a band called nautilus pompilius, if you can believe that.) last time i
was there, though (1999) i spent a decent amount of time at the cd markets, and
ig were nowhere to be found. based on what else was popular, i don't really see
that changing anytime soon.
i'm sure there are some ig fans there, but i expect they're all either been to
america or have friends from here who passed music along.
mandy
p.s. bonus points for anyone who can guess the most popular english-language
band in russia. it has been three years since i left, but these guys were so
many miles ahead of everyone else in popularity that i have confidence it hasn't
changed.

hiya,
nope, they dont write their own stuff, nor are they lesbians. that's what i
hear from my very own personal russian friend. but i do hear that they are
kind of rolemodels for russia's gay youth - for their marketable looks
anyway. i have their album in english (guilty pleasure:) and it's nothing
special in a lasting value kind of way. definately not. but i have to admit,
it's fun - something different anyway. and as far as i know tatu should not
mean what was said it means.
russia's very own mle, kristen hall, rose polenzani, etc, etc, combined into
one - incredibly talented female singer songwriter is definately zemfira.
she's got deep lyrics and emilisque play of words, which i miss out on b/c
dont know the language that well (at all).
but definately worth checking out: www.zemfira.ru <http://www.zemfira.ru/> (unfortunately in
russian only). oh, and there's talk she's gay, and like the only major
female star that manages herself. she is not signed to any major record
labels. it is said that the emancipation of russian women in music starts
from now on...from where she's at, and what she is doing artistically.
it seems as if she is touring canada and the us this month, theres more info
in english on:
<http://7-40.com/zemfira/index.htm>

so it's the equivalent of calling in sick when your car breaks down? cute.
:) well, i'll just assume they're telling the truth.
i was at the hob show when amy was coming down with appendicitis, and
somone wrote me offlist and said they saw a show where amy had the flu.
maybe amy's just more of a stoic.

like i said, i'm assuming emily really is sick. i was just saying that
maybe she's more willing than amy to admit defeat and go to bed with a
bowl of soup and a hot water bottle. (which i think amy should definitely
do when she's sick too. and all of you too - if you're sick, don't go to
work! stoicism just makes you miserable and gives everyone around you your
germs.)

yesterday, i saw the video. although i don't classify it pornographic in any way, it is nothing special. also, their music is very pop/trendy sounding. not at all unique. no similarities to our girls. at the same time, i noticed that ani difranco is coming to st. louis and bitch and animal are coming with her. i listened to some of their music for the first time yesterday and frankly i thought they were awful! the only song that i heard that was ok (and it was only ok because it gave me a grin) was "best cock on the block." what's up with their music? apparently, they are making some sort of statement, but it sounds to me like a very unorganized "jam session" where no one really cares what the final sound is, just sort of messing around. any others with insight on this duo?

bitch and animal are best seen live. their cds are mediocre, but better if you
have seen them perform the songs. they're very cocky, and i think their names
sum up their attitudes on stage (and what i've seen of them off-stage). they're
sort of the shock-rockers of the acoustic world. i think that they do have some
messages that are worth hearing, but sometimes it's hard to find them in the
middle of all the stuff that is meant to offend. my favorite piece that they
have done is called "pussy manifesto". you can read the lyrics here:
<http://www.bitchandanimal.com/pussy.html> (not for the easily offended - strong
language content)

i would definitely encourage people to see bitch & animal live. bitch's
wardrobe is enough reason to check them out. more importantly, they are both
talented musicians and dynamic people, with quite a bit to say. the first
time i saw them was up in vancouver, bc at their annual folk fest. it was
amazing to see them interact with everyone from utah phillips (who happens
to love 'em) to dan bern to toshi reagon.
speaking of utah...
can i just tell everyone something incredible that happened to me last
weekend? on sunday a group of friends, my girlfriend & myself went to go eat
at this great ethiopian place in town (portland, ore). who was sitting at
the table next to us? utah!!! my girlfriend went over & told him it was my
birthday, which he responded with, "well then, i suppose i should go on over
& tell her happy birthday." he hung out with us for a little bit, took
pictures with us & even sang happy birthday to me. !!! utah phillips is one
of my heroes, so as i'm sure you can understand, it made my day. :)

someone in line at ig shows this winter turned me on to them. while i think
the disc is inconsistent, i think they show some promise, and i like the

i kind of liked their live performance as a novelty, and they're kinda
funny in their pointedly radical way. but i think they're just too
cacaphonous for a lot of people to really like listening to, myself

everybody's gotta have a gimmick, and tatu's gimmick is 'gay.' whether they
really are or not has been made into a teasing hush-hush situation that
seems to be a big sham. fyi, the video is eye candy-- the song mentioned
below is about two teenage girls who have a relationship and shows the two
singers (who are aged 17 and 18, so i'm not sure why a "child" protection
charity is concerned) kissing and being generally scorned. they also have a
song called, loosely translated, 'gay boy.'
i went to the american website and read some of the bulletin boards. my
personal verdict? it's a marketing ploy. see for yourself-- they're at
<http://www.tatugirls.com/>.
and a big yeehaw to mandy, who managed to work not just 'male gaze' but
'idealogue' as well into her post. nice.

stay in oberlin; cleveland is too far. your two choices in town are the
oberlin inn (<http://www.oberlininn.com/>) or the ivy tree inn bed&breakfast
(<http://www.grayco.com/cleveland/bandb/sample5.html>). both are within quick
(5 minutes or less) walking distance of finney chapel and, well, all of
oberlin in general.
a list of other local lodging can be found at
<http://www.oberlin.edu/~chess/hotels.html>.

everybody's gotta have a gimmick, and tatu's gimmick is 'gay.' whether they
really are or not has been made into a teasing hush-hush situation that
seems to be a big sham. fyi, the video is eye candy-- the song mentioned
below is about two teenage girls who have a relationship and shows the two
singers (who are aged 17 and 18, so i'm not sure why a "child" protection
charity is concerned) kissing and being generally scorned. they also have a
song called, loosely translated, 'gay boy.'
i went to the american website and read some of the bulletin boards. my
personal verdict? it's a marketing ploy. see for yourself-- they're at
<http://www.tatugirls.com/>.
and a big yeehaw to mandy, who managed to work not just 'male gaze' but
'idealogue' as well into her post. nice.

hfks,
on my solo adventure from maine to alaska and the arctic circle last summer,
(14,000 mls. r/t - yes, that's 14,000, and not 1,400 mls.),
i stopped along the way to see my sister in indiana,
and take her to her first ever ig, and melissa concerts.
both were wonderful events, but, for whatever reason, i didn't boot them.
so.....i was wondering if anyone has a good cd of these concerts.
the experience was so incredible, and it's all wrapped up in the midnight
sun (which was phoenominal!), and the arctic circle, and falling in love
with alaska (not in alaska), the eskimo games, the yukon territory, and
roslyn washington (filming site of northern exposure).
what a great summer!!!
....not to mention the incredible bonding experience it was
to go to these two concerts with my baby sister.
....oh, and norah jones, too.
i couldn't get her cd out of my player all the way there!
i find it important to take full advantage of the time
that i don't have a partner :)
so anyway, back to the boots........
if anyone has either one of these, or both,
i would be very happy to send my own supplies :)
ok, back to my dissertation (enough stalling!)
i hope they're out there. thank you.

not sure if this has been posted---zagat (the people who do restaurant guides) is now coming out with a "best music" guide. you can go online and vote for the best albums of all time, and indigo girls' first album is up there. you can also put in write in votes. ig is in the "singer/singwriter" category. it seems like a cool idea, and many of the artists i listen to are listed. you can vote on as many albums as you want, add comments, and say which is your favorite song off the album. the address is:
<http://www.zagat.com/survey/index.asp?vid=1&pid=1&lid=3>
click on the "music guide". enjoy everyone!

well my guess is that emily has gotten well. what a fun show. i admit that
this was my first indigo girls show from an upper balcony. it was a unique
experience. it seems like there's a different level of fan up there. i
swear on my life the following question was uttered into my ears and it
didn't even bother me--so how long have amy and emily been dating? yup you
heard it correctly. the greatest part was that after 42 shows, this
question amused me more than it incensed me. maybe the several pre-show
beers helped mellow me out. either way, it was a fantastic show even from
way up high. it's fun seeing shows near people who have never seen them. i
highly recommend binoculars. you can see everything through those things.
the girls were in high spirits commenting several times on how much they
love to play chicago. i would attempt a setlist but know i'd be way off. a
few songs i recall: opened with become you. ended with galileo. in between
included old favorites like kid fears, wood song, power of two, ctf,
chickenman (with a cool bitteroot rendition in the middle), get out the map,
least complicated, go, jonas & ezekial etc. they "squeezed in" virginia
woolf as there were so many requests for it screamed out. i think the hours
movie had something to do with that. emily screwed it up by singing "anger
on the cage" in stead of stage. she stopped, we giggled and they started
over.
amy chatted about indian political issues for awhile and the began a song
stating "this has nothing to do with that". i've seen them chattier but
overall they seemed very excited about the audience participation. there
was an emily recommendation to go to the lobby tables for anti-war
propaganda.
it took the whole show to read amy's shirt. she originally had on what
looked like a green a black flannel (remember i am relying on binoculars
here). she shed the flannel for her sleeveless top which read in sequins:
american beauty. very cute.
the best part of the show was that it was with no band and all acoustic. i
haven't seen an all acoustic show in years. what a difference it made on
certain songs. collecting you was phenomenal with no back up. it was just
so nostalgic for all those seeking ig of old. they are so crisp and you can
really hear the singing so much more without the band. after all the shows
they are still so much fun to see live. hope you all get a chance to see em
soon.....time for bed....greg

it wasn't flannel but some kind of stiff cotton blazer. it looked like
it itched which may be way she took it off so soon!!!
i can give you a set list once i listen to the tape ( yes i did boot it
but boy was security tight, frisked everyone..good thing i put the
recorder in a place i remember sus using a few years ago..) even at the
end gargantuan sized security folk rushed to the stage and snatched away
cameras from those who thought they might sneak a pix.
emily looked just fine, but then i always think she looks fine. amy
looked pale but sure looked like she was having a great time.
amy talked about going to the field museum and looking at the stuffed
birds...which , for her, was great because she always had to use
binocolurs...until it occurred to her that they were dead....so she
went across the hall to the native american display and liked that until
she realized they were all dead. and stuffed...
emily talked about having an article send to her that read "virginia
wolfe makes me vomit"....got a great laugh out of that.
this was the first time i was able to listen to chicken man ( sorry, i
just don't like it) but i think it was because there wasn't a soc from
amy but rather a long blusey jam from em on guitar.
all in all great show..managed to turn my 14 year old daughter into a
tried and true fan..our species will continue!
let you know when the boot is ready

my 19 yo son and i have a deep love of music in common. we are both very into lyrics. i will one day bring his korn, kid rock, godsmack loving self to an ig concert. he has seen videos and lord knows he's heard the music. he appreciates their talent, but says it is not his cup of tea. i just know if he ever saw them live, he would respect them even more. it is a goal of mine... ;)

hey greg, pooh and all you wonderful ig fans,
the chicago show was great! i will write more later when i can. now i'm at school and have to get ready to teach. loved reading your review, greg. just a quick correction: em actually sang:
"see this an hour on the page"
and then said "s--t!...that would be a long time to spend on one page..." or something to that effect. it was hilarious! a friend i was with said afterwards that with her reading comp difficulties, it just might take her an hour for a page!!!
gotta go.
peace,
michele

greg,
good review! funny that someone asked you about them being a couple. at
one of the shows that i was at they played chickenman and the crowd was
going crazy and everything. after the song was over this guy behind me taps
me on the shoulder and asked me what the name of that song was! i kind of
chuckled as i told him what it was. amy says "chickenman" like 500 times
during that song, i would think that it's a safe bet that is the name of it.
glad to hear that em is better, and after that review i am sooo excited for
tomorrow night!!!
take care,
mi rinda

well my guess is that emily has gotten well. what a fun show. i admit that
this was my first indigo girls show from an upper balcony. it was a unique
experience. it seems like there's a different level of fan up there. i
swear on my life the following question was uttered into my ears and it
didn't even bother me--so how long have amy and emily been dating? yup you
heard it correctly. the greatest part was that after 42 shows, this
question amused me more than it incensed me. maybe the several pre-show
beers helped mellow me out. either way, it was a fantastic show even from
way up high. it's fun seeing shows near people who have never seen them. i
highly recommend binoculars. you can see everything through those things.
the girls were in high spirits commenting several times on how much they
love to play chicago. i would attempt a setlist but know i'd be way off. a
few songs i recall: opened with become you. ended with galileo. in between
included old favorites like kid fears, wood song, power of two, ctf,
chickenman (with a cool bitteroot rendition in the middle), get out the map,
least complicated, go, jonas & ezekial etc. they "squeezed in" virginia
woolf as there were so many requests for it screamed out. i think the hours
movie had something to do with that. emily screwed it up by singing "anger
on the cage" in stead of stage. she stopped, we giggled and they started
over.
amy chatted about indian political issues for awhile and the began a song
stating "this has nothing to do with that". i've seen them chattier but
overall they seemed very excited about the audience participation. there
was an emily recommendation to go to the lobby tables for anti-war
propaganda.
it took the whole show to read amy's shirt. she originally had on what
looked like a green a black flannel (remember i am relying on binoculars
here). she shed the flannel for her sleeveless top which read in sequins:
american beauty. very cute.
the best part of the show was that it was with no band and all acoustic. i
haven't seen an all acoustic show in years. what a difference it made on
certain songs. collecting you was phenomenal with no back up. it was just
so nostalgic for all those seeking ig of old. they are so crisp and you can
really hear the singing so much more without the band. after all the shows
they are still so much fun to see live. hope you all get a chance to see em
soon.....time for bed....greg

i wrote a letter to the editor in response to a rather negative news article
about ig's show postpondment in iowa city. my letter was published in
today's daily iowan. it can be accessed at:
<a href="<http://www.dailyiowan.com/>"><http://www.dailyiowan.com</a%3e>
there is no direct link. if you want to read it, click on "opinions" (on the
left side of the screen), and once you are on the opinions page, click on
"letters to the editor" (or it may just say "letters"). my letter is the
second (and last) one on the page.
chicago was brilliant last night! here's to a great milwaukee show

for those who don't want to register, here's the text of karen's kick-ass
letter.

compassion for indigo
being an enormous indigo girls fan, i came from
california to follow amy ray and
emily saliers on their midwest tour. i, like university
of northern iowa student betsie
driscoll, was disappointed to see that the show was
canceled. however, i believe that
driscoll's quote was incredibly inappropriate (di, feb.
4). she said, "i still like the
indigo girls. i'm still a fan, and i'm going to come
back. but i'm also pretty mad. i
mean, their job is to perform. they should stick it
out."
not only is "sticking it out" an unrealistic request in
this scenario, but driscoll (and
everyone else quoted in the article) shows a complete
lack of compassion for saliers'
health. touring is hard work. and hard work is something
that ray and saliers have
perfected. not only do they often play more than 200
shows per year, this year, they are
also embarking on a speaking tour with winona laduke,
and they have plans to
record and release a new album by the end of the year.
in addition, ray and saliers
are fervent activists who devote endless time and money
to social causes.
people get sick. shows get canceled. life goes on. in
this case, saliers came down
with laryngitis, and it would have been impossible for
the show to go on. the indigo
girls appeases its fans above and beyond the call of
duty already. a little compassion
would have been nice.

she actually said "i know.... you don't spend an hour on the page, you spend an
hour on the stage... i must be channeling that hateful writer" (the one who'd
writen the "virginia woolf makes me want to vomit" column.) the intro to the
song was really funny, too - emily opened by quoting the article title. then she
and amy talked a little about how they hadn't sung this in awhile, and they
certainly hadn't practiced it... and then emily flung her hands out to either
side and said "but whatever. you can take over for us."
now that i now pooh has a boot (yay!) i won't take a stab at the setlist, but i
do know that they played devotion and hope alone, neither of which i had never
heard live before, and dairy queen, which gets better every time i hear it. they
also played least complicated, which i was pleased about because it's my
favorite sing-along and they so often skip it these days.
notable omissions: moment of forgiveness and our deliverance. i like both those
songs a lot, but i've almost started to feel that they are a waste of a spot in
the setlist (od much more than mof) so i was pleased.
i hit twenty show with this one - like greg, i was up in the balcony (damn those
internet pre-sales!) where i also haven't been for some years. i was slightly
surprised to realize that one can, in fact, still see from up high, and hear as
well (except when the women behind us decided that since they didn't know
starkville they could just talk through it - grrrr.) it felt sota mellower up
there, but that may also have been the vibe of the whole show - mellow in a good
way. it was really an excellent concert.
oh, and chickenman rocked. emily took a big ol' bluesy solo in the middle, and
then they did all of bitterroot just before the "i went looking" part (i'd never
seen them do a big guitar break ad bitterroot in the same performance).

i admit, i was selfishly kinda hoping (since it was entirely beyond my
control anyway) that shows would continue to be postponed, because i've got
the greatest ticket of my life to the minneapolis show tomorrow night and
i've also got a bad case of mono. it's a single ticket, 2nd or 3rd row amy
side, and i was/am thrilled to be going alone and hopefully rocking out. or
merely making it through without falling over.
basically, this is an email to put an alert out to minneapolis area folks
that there might be a great ticket available, but it would only become
available on really short notice. i'm going to see how i feel, and what will
probably happen is that i'll at least try to go, but may (sob!) leave early.
in that case, i would be happy to hand off my ticket stub on my way out to a
listee in less fortunate seating, if we could only work out a way to
communicate with one another.
so. i won't do this in order of reply, but rather in the creativity and
horribleness of the current seats. in a response, let me know if a) you
would be interested in buying the ticket (face value or whatever) the evening
of the show, if i'm just feeling too low to try to go (which isn't very
likely) and b) if you would like to maybe get my stub (free) if i leave early.
please all, i hope this is all a false alarm and i feel great tomorrow.
in that case, i do apologize for raising false hopes. but i wanted to make
sure this seat goes to good use if i'm not the one using it.
sincerely, and sickly,
lisa
