damn i'm old! :-)
just finished up a crazy 4 days of the sxsw music festival.
one of the founders of the fest was interviewed about his top 10 moments
from the entire 16 years. his number 2 moment:

> 2
>
> good god!(1995)jesus christ superstar is a rather
> mind-blowing experience on its own terms,
> but the production took a decidedly
> feminist tone as indigo girl amy ray
> assumed the role of christ. the

hard to believe it was that long ago. one of the most memorable shows
i've ever seen, no. 3 moment, johnny cash's appearence. not bad
company to keep.

from www.dailytexanonline.com <http://www.dailytexanonline.com/>

the festival's 6 greatest moments
march 07, 2003
by erin
steele and stephen saito
daily texan
staff
it is a
difficult task to pick the best moments
that have
occurred over the 16-year history of
sxsw, even
for the man who has seen it all.
or perhaps
that's exactly the problem.
after all,
austin chronicle editor louis black -
who co-founded sxsw with chronicle
publisher nick barbaro - was there
for the dawn of the music festival
in 1987, the creation of the film program
in 1993 and is currently diving
into the chaos of this year's festivities, which
begin today.
for black, the best part of sxsw is
observing festival-goers' reactions.
"the most remarkable things i
remember involve watching other people:
how excited they are, watching them
show up at the hotel at 2 a.m.,
exhausted and just beaming," black
said. "watching people fall in love with
austin and hearing how happy they
are. hearing them talk about how great
kgsr is, or how great kut is. it's
so much more about what other people
experience."
some of black's other memorable
moments include johnny cash's
appearance at emo's, alejandro
escovedo playing at the austin music hall
and the indigo girls' performance
of jesus christ superstar, all experiences
that black refers to as
"incredible."
despite the inevitable stress that
accompanies sxsw, black is looking
forward to this year's festival -
in fact, he says, it's his favorite time of the
year.
"i'm always depressed when sxsw is
over," black said. "i get to see so
many people i know and present
music and films that people love. it's great
to do things that give people such
a unique experience."
perhaps black can't quite commit to
just six favorite moments, but that
doesn't mean we can't. in no
particular order, here are our choices for the
best of sxsw:
1
the power panel(1997)
sxsw's most star-studded panel to
date was
that of "outside the system, inside
the
system," which featured the likes
of quentin
tarantino, kevin smith, george
huang, mike judge, steven soderbergh,
richard linklater and robert
rodriguez discussing how difficult it is for
indie filmmakers to deal with
success. tarantino arrived a fashionably 20
minutes late, and then went on to
commandeer the panel, extolling the
wonders of harvey weinstein and
miramax. "the whole thing was such a
trip," said black. "i think one of
them made a crack that if someone bombed
the place, it would be the end of
the american independent film movement."
2
good god!(1995)
jesus christ superstar is a rather
mind-blowing experience on its own terms,
but the production took a decidedly
feminist tone as indigo girl amy ray
assumed the role of christ. the
sxsw crowd went wild as ray entered
from the back of the auditorium,
belting out the words to the song "what's
the buzz?"
3
'cash'ing in at emo's (1994)
the legendary man in black stepped
onto one of emo's four stages back in
1994, wowing the audience, as well
as the club's owners - in fact, the barstool
on which johnny cash sat during his
set continues to hang from emo's
ceiling. by the time the
performance was over, an already impressive musical
festival was elevated to the level
of greatness.
4
we want moore! (2000)
chris wilcha's the target shoots
first won the award for best
documentary, but that didn't stop
fellow documentarian michael moore from
stealing the spotlight. moore - who
was in austin as trailing then-gov.
george w. bush as a correspondent
for politically incorrect - arrived
unannounced at the 7th annual sxsw
awards ceremony. moore presented
the
documentary awards, and after learning
that due
to the dotcom bust there wasn't a
cash prize
for the two filmmakers who came
in second,
moore gave them $5,000 each out
of his own
pocket.
5
escovedo
honors morrison (2000)
alejandro
escovedo has been described as
the local
dean of songwriters, so it was only
fitting
that he paid tribute to the late sterling
morrison,
a former ut english professor
and member
of the punk band the bizarros, at
the 2000 austin music awards. known
for melding the grizzled and artistic
in his music, escovedo took the
stage with velvet underground mastermind
john cale to honor fellow
velvet-vet morrison.
6
the year of the documentary (2002)
the 2002 sxsw film festival may
have boasted high-profile features, but it
was the documentaries that ruled
the festival. from alexandra pelosi's
journeys with george to the
recently oscar-nominated spellbound, sxsw
proved that real-life is way better
than fiction. documentaries even boasted
the kind of star-power usually
reserved for narrative films, including aussie
bad boy russell crowe's appearance
at the paramount to introduce texas,
which chronicled his band 30 odd
foot of grunts.
and the worst
no women on the power panel (1997)
director steven soderbergh "joked"
that no women had been invited to the
festival, thus explaining their
absence on the various panels. looks like the
joke's on us.
norah jones at the clay pit (2002)
at the time, entertainment weekly
highlighted the blunder, and though
it was surely an intimate performance
for those who were allowed inside,
it was one of the lowest points for the
hundreds of people who were turned
away.

in response to rena's post about wheaton college--
i'm hoping that you're referring to a wheaton other than the one in
illinois? i think there's one in ma but just in case....
i wanted to pass along a web page reference in which you can see that
wheaton's code of conduct which they call a "covenant." i believe that they
still require students to sign on to this covenant with the understanding
that it is to be obeyed on and off campus. in light of the reference to the
indigo girls, i thought i would point out specifically that wheaton college
discriminates against homosexuals specifically in this "covenant" by
referring to upholding "chastity among the unmarried (1 cor. 6:18) and the
sanctity of marriage between a man and woman (heb. 13:4)" and "sexual
immorality, such as the use of pornography (matt. 5:27-28), pre-marital sex,
adultery, homosexual behavior and all other sexual relations outside the
bounds of marriage between a man and woman (rom. 1:21-27; 1 cor. 6:9; gen.
2:24; eph. 5:31)." there are many other parts of this "covenant" which i
personally find--well, offensive, but i won't go into that here as i wanted
to keep it somewhat related to the indigo girls reference. unless i have
the wrong wheaton college in mind, which i very well may, i find it
interesting that the indigo girls would have appeared on that campus and
wonder whether there might be some other explanation. anyone? that web page
by the way is <http://www.wheaton.edu/welcome/cov/comcov.html>

it is out there now, from another source than mine (check bbs). i did tape
it myself, but its being transfered and i'm notoriously slow since i don't
do my transfers myself (i send them out). however, this show is *clean* and
very nice so it should turn quick (don't hold your breath). i'll have it
hopefully by mid april.
patience is required. it'll be worth it. :)
i also have pgh 2/17/03 as well and it should be ready same time. i'll post
here. a tree is possible if someone could run it. i can seed it. hang in

hi all,
for those of you who have set up a trade with me or are doing b&p for this
show... i just wanted to let you know that when i started burning these, i
realized that the person who gave me the high quality copy had left out
galileo from the encore. i don't know why i didn't notice it sooner, but i
am waiting for him to get back to me. i just wanted to let everyone know.
seems like it is always something!!! i figure if for whatever reason he
does not have that song, i can put our copy of that song in the mix. our
copy is good too, but his is just better since he was using such nice
equipment.
sorry to those of you who have been checking your mailboxes for this, i
swear they will go out as soon as humanly possible!!
