you might want to read this before signing and passing this along.  not entirely
untrue, but not completely true either:

on may 8, 1973, militant american indians who had held the south dakota=20
hamlet of wounded knee for 10 weeks surrendered.   =20
   =20
    =e2=80=a2 <a href=3d"http://www.nytimes.com/learning/general/onthisday/2=
0030508.html?th">see this front page</a>  =20

occupation of wounded knee is ended

by andrew h. malcolm special to the new york times =20

wounded knee, s.d., may 8 -- the second battle of wounded knee ended today.

after 70 days, two deaths, numerous injuries, countless meetings,=20
bureaucratic bickering and a last-minute gunfight, more than 100 militants=20
lay down their arms and surrendered this occupied reservation town to wary=20
federal officials.

with helicopters clattering overhead, united states marshals swept through=20
the bullet-pocked hamlet looking for booby traps and holdouts. at 10:19 a.m.=
,=20
the voice of william hall, deputy director of the marshals, crackled over th=
e=20
radio: "gentlemen, the village of wounded knee is clear."

seizure of town=20

it was the end of a dramatic bitter and bizarre episode in recent american=20
history. and it ended somewhat differently than that cold december day in=20
1890 when big foot's band of sioux gathered at wounded knee, someone fired a=
=20
shot and 153 indians died at the hands of the army.

it was a cold feb. 27 this year when about 200 armed members of the american=
=20
indian movement and its supporters seized the old town on the pine ridge=20
reservation. theirs was a struggle to overthrow the elected pine ridge india=
n=20
reservation government headed by richard wilson. the youngster militants, wh=
o=20
seemed to yearn somehow for a certain tribal identity that they have never=20
really known, said mr. wilson's government was corrupt and dictatorial.

for many days, except for the danger involved, the seizure was like some=20
strange carnival with hundreds of policemen surrounding the indians, who=20
staged and then restaged events for television camera crews in their mobile=20
campers. chartered planes swooped in and out, some dropping supplies to the=20
town.

hundreds of newsmen speaking dozens of languages, swarmed over the=20
reservation's headquarters here, annoying the militants' opponents and=20
fighting for both telephones. negotiations, sometimes held by an old teepee,=
=20
dragged for weeks. a federal negotiator smoked a peace pipe. hostages were=20
released. a tentative agreement was set april 5, but then collapsed.

delay in settlement=20

the talks continued, centering on the manner of disarming, but negotiations=20
were punctuated and embittered by a vicious fire fight in which two a.i.m.=20
supporters, frank clearwater and lawrence lamont, were shot fatally and lloy=
d=20
grimm, one of more than 300 federal agents here, was paralyzed.

then late last week, kent frizzell, solicitor general of the interior=20
department, secured a letter from leonard garment, counsel to president=20
nixon, reaffirming an earlier guarantee of a meeting between at least five=20
white house representatives and oglala sioux tribal elders here next week --=
=20
if the confrontation at wounded knee ended by this friday. the=20
representatives would discuss indian grievances such as broken treaties and=20
compensation for lost lands.

the elders, supporters of a.i.m., who included frank fools crow, took the=20
letter to the occupiers, who then said they were convinced that their aims=20
would be served best by ending the confrontation. on sunday both sides=20
announced agreement and set a wednesday disarmament, a date advanced to this=
=20
morning at the occupiers' request.

during the occupation, more than 300 persons were arrested trying to enter=20
or, in recent days, to leave the village. dozens of others eluded federal=20
perimeter patrols and escaped, apparently with a quantity of arms.

late night, federal officials said, two more homes in wounded knee were=20
burned down, four persons surrendered at a roadblock and four more tried to=20
escape. however, they were discovered and fired their guns as they retreated=
=20
to the town. marshals in a bunker returned the fire wounding one person,=20
officials said.

this morning at 4:30 off-duty marshals, border patrolmen and f.b.i. agents=20
were picked up at their motels in chartered buses and taken to the perimeter=
.

there, at 5:30 a.m., the sun rose in a bright blue sky as men on both sides=20
stamped their feet in the crisp 35 degree weather. it was, as the sioux chie=
f=20
crazy horse once said, a good day to die. but today no one did.

a few minutes after 7 o'clock, by agreement, the government's armored=20
personnel carriers withdrew from sight and the occupiers left their bunkers.

also by agreement they gave up what they said was all their weapons.=20
according to richard hellstern, deputy assistant attorney general of the=20
justice department, the surrendered arms totaled 15 old guns, far fewer than=
=20
the sophisticated automatic weapons that federal officials say the militants=
=20
had.

"these guns are a lot of crap," said an irate mr. hellstern, "the arms=20
dispossession part of the agreement has been violated."

one indian headsman (of office that the elected indian officers say is=20
nonexistent) was flown by helicopter to each government bunker as an=20
observer. "we have peace today," said mr. fools crow, "i am happy."

carload by carload the 120 remaining occupiers were ferried to a government=20
road block. mr. hellstern said that one-half were indians. some were freed.=20
fifteen others were arrested and taken to federal court in rapid city, 120=20
miles northwest of here. the better known a.i.m. leaders were not present.=20
they either were seized earlier or escaped by night.

at 9:51 the order to advance went out to the marshals. in a skirmish line,=20
they moved over the hill and down from the west.

at the crossroads, a federal spokesman said, they came upon and took into=20
custody a four-man television camera crew from columbia broadcasting system,=
=20
the same men who entered the town last week, were seized and then evicted=20
from the reservation by tribal officials. mr. hellstern said they would be=20
charged with aiding a civil disorder, a felony.=20

inside the town, the cautious marshals, who were covered by agents in=20
hovering helicopters, found the bunkers empty. late tonight a tour of this=20
town by a newsman disclosed that many of the houses were heavily damaged and=
=20
much garbage and trash lay strewn about.=20

at 12:27 the specially trained force of marshals radioed that all was clear=20
for f.b.i. agents to begin their criminal investigation.=20

almost as one, the heavily armed agents leaped into their rented plymouths=20
and fords and sped down the dusty hill to the town. their u-haul trucks=20
followed and then came a winnebago camper van, bouncing across the rutted=20
pastures now littered with spent shell casings, empty flare packages,=20
abandoned bunkers and tin cans.

i would just like to point out that there's no way a constitutional
amendment can be quickly and quietly pushed through congress.  it's really,
really hard to amend the u.s. constitution.

i would also like to suggest that a topic such as restricting the definition
of marriage, or whatever, is not likely to be regarded as a good subject for
constitutional amendment.  most of the amendments that do not directly
control the political process (eg, all the voting-rights amendments, the
amendments that describe states' rights and how many senators) deal with
*giving* the people various rights and restricting the rights of government
to interfere.  the big exception, of course, is prohibition -- which was
shortly seen to be a really bad idea requiring another constitutional
amendment to repeal it.  so i think it's really unlikely that an amendment
like this would even be successfully proposed -- let alone ratified by 2/3
of the states.

it would be much more likely for someone to propose an amendment giving *all
americans* the right to marry.  but since the proposed amendment giving
equal rights to women (ie, the era) hasn't been ratified, the odds of such
an amendment succeeding seem moot.

this is not to say that various forces are not trying to draft *legislation*
to federally define marriage as between one man and one woman.  that's
another matter.  and states are doing it as well.  this is the nightmare
issue -- not some bogeyman of a constitutional amendment.  don't be diverted
by what sounds like a bigger threat.

this tape made it into a fans hands i think in late 94 or 95 - the fan -
who shall remain anonymous - simply asked as proof some statement that
emily would not mind it circulating. after many attewmpts ( i did an
interview with them in 97 and forgot!) the question was posed at the uconn
q&a, emily does not want it circulating, and the lone copy will not be -
per her request -

altho-
some tracks may/may not have leaked out - possibly other sources - or
mislabeled (how many fan made versions of color me grey have turned up?)  -
there is also very similar material recorded in the same period - i
personally do not think this is a holy grail like maybe the b-band tape
when it surfaced, but that is just my own opinion. there are a number of
boots from 85 that have the same songs in performance

a friend and i were able to buy front row mere seconds after we purchased
these seats.  i live in rhode island, so i'd have to mail the tickets to
you... unless you wanted to meet us at our hotel, but i'd rather recoup the
money before i have to leave on the trip...

subject:      nigc - fcc vote to allow clearchannel to monopolize our media
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

dear friend,

on june 2, the federal communications commission is planning on
authorizing sweeping changes to the american news media.  the rules
change could allow your local tv stations, newspaper, radio stations,
and cable provider to all be owned by one company. nbc, abc, cbs and
fox could have the same corporate parent.  the resulting concentration
of ownership could be deeply destructive to our democracy.

congress is supposed to guard against monopoly power. but the
upcoming rule change could change the landscape for all media and
usher in an era in which a few corporations control your access to
news and entertainment.  please join me in asking congress and the
fcc to support a diverse, competitive media landscape by going to:

http://www.moveon.org/stopthefcc/

you can also automatically have your comments publicly filed at the
fcc.

when the folks at moveon.org talk to congresspeople about this issue,
the response is usually the same: "we only hear from media lobbyists on
this.  it seems like my constituents aren't very concerned with this
issue."  a few thousand emails could permanently change that perception.
please join this critical campaign, and let congress know you care.

thanks.

mi rinda
