here's my review from the best indigo girls concert i have ever attended.
it was at franklin and marshall, on february 24, 2000.
hey there intimate strangers,
i guess i got home first @ 230am to my computer so here goes:
got there approximately 12 hours ago, to line up with carrie knepp, and met
a few
listees in line (mandy & friends, the other jill and her wife, kirsten).
the weather was perfect for line-waiting: sunny, a little wind, but great
for february in lancaster, pa.
mandy had her portable stereo out so we listened to a collection of ig
covers(maybe jill's cd?), then mm's beneath the devil moon, and then shaming
of the sun.
when they opened the doors at 7:05pm, we walk-ran to our places near the
stage, and felt like sardines there.ê the stage was on the long side of the
auditorium, so no matter where you were, you could see them.
rose polenzani opened with "shake through the ugly", played "thom ii" (which
i had never heard live before), and other songs, and ended with olga's
birthday. (more detailed setlist on rose-p@onelist.com)
the acoustic duo setlist for tonight was:
go
get out the map
thin line
soon be to nothing
world falls
peace tonight
romeo & juliet (!!)
closer to fine
faye tucker (acoustic!)
philosophy of loss
shame on you
wood song
ozilline
ghost
chickenman :)
mystery (a request - not on setlist)
encore:
or - rose polenzani with the girls on backup vocals
gone again
galileo
the indigo girls were so interactive with the crowd tonight--little stories
or comments, reading our signs, accepting gifts.ê amy ray wore a blue long
sleeve shirt over her infamous black tanktop, a grey chain , blue jeans, and
blue suede shoes--oh, and we musn't forget that cool cowboy hat.ê she was
all smiley tonight.ê emily wore sparkly stuff around her eyes, but not the
blue shadow.ê she wore a red long-sleeve shirt, black pants, a sparkly
watch, a couple of bracelets (including a yellow rave one), and i couldn't
see her shoes.
they performed on queen latifah's show earlier that day or yesterday, and
emily absolutely raved about her--how she is as cool in person, as you see
on the screen.ê they caught her show in atlanta and was blown away.
amy mentioned that they would be leaving for australia in 3 days--over lots
and lots of water.ê emily said she was going to listen to the new filters
album on the way to aussieland.
emily said, "what is this show--who wants to marry a multi-millionaire?
what's even more sick is that mostly women watched the show--that's f*cked
up!"
it was a wonderful--some called it the ultimate setlist--tonight.ê we were
all amazed or transcended into ig heaven.ê i was shocked and carrie was
stunned and crying when amy started playing romeo & juliet.ê and once they
played wood song, i didn't think they would do mystery--but i bet the
birthday staff (security?) member (matthew) requested it.
other highlights for me were: hearing philosophy of loss live, world falls,
and thin line.
after the show, we ambled our way over to the bus to wait for amy and emily
to appear.ê emily came out fairly quickly after the show, and luckily,
signed autographs at our end of the bus.ê she and amy jammed tonight to fill
in where the band was before.ê amy came out about 40 minutes later, and made
sure she signed everything that people presented to her.ê she even hugged a
couple of fans.ê (to get more fanatical, both amy and emily used my purple
pen for autographs; got my 1200 curfews songbook and my cons t-shirt
signed.)
overall, a very splendid night.
diane - thanks neil and andi for bringing my umbrella!

my favorite concert has to be my first ig show on march 1, 2002 at the =
paradise in boston. i went with my sis-in-law and we were on the side =
of amy's side looking past sully at the girls. amy was only about 10 =
feet from us. i was able to go to 3 other shows last year, but never =
got to get that close again. plus it was such a small venue to begin =
with. awesome night...one i'll never forget. now if only i could meet =
them.........

in case you haven't heard (i can tell you that the media is quite abuzz =
with this story) , yesterday the episcopal church here in nh yesterday =
elected a gay minister as bishop of the dioscese of nh. he still has to =
be approved by the national church. here is an article from last week. =
i've had the opportunity a few years ago to work with rev. robinson. =
his sexual orientation aside, i, as a straight epispopalian, i believe =
he definitely is the best candidate for the job of bishop of nh. our =
minister, who voted for gene, this morning said he'd been waiting his =
whole life, 2000 years, in fact for the whole time of man's existance, =
to see that all people are equal. this is a step in the right =
direction.
http://www4.fosters.com/news2003/june2003/june_03/news/reg_nh0603h.asp
here's another article from the union leader:
gay man elected
nh episcopal bishop=20
by anne saunders=20
the associated press
=20
=20
=20
concord - new hampshire episcopalians made world history yesterday by =
electing the first openly gay person to serve as bishop of an episcopal =
diocese.=20
the rev. v. gene robinson, 56, received a majority of ballot votes from =
the 77 clergy participating in the election and from 165 lay =
representatives around the state. he was one of four candidates under =
consideration to lead the new hampshire diocese.=20
his selection must be confirmed next month by the church's national =
general convention, something that is typically routine but may be =
contentious in this case, church leaders say.=20
when robinson emerged as the victor on the second ballot, more than 300 =
voters and spectators at st. paul's church erupted in cheers and jumped =
to their feet to applaud.=20
robinson won despite opposition from many in the anglican community =
worldwide.=20
in his first words after the election, robinson told his supporters to =
be gentle with those who do not understand their decision.=20
"we will show the world how to be a christian community. we can get =
through this as long as we keep coming together," he said.=20
robinson said he will let his own humanity speak, when it comes to =
approaching the wider world.=20
"i plan to be a good bishop, not a gay bishop," he said. "i'm so much =
more than my orientation."=20
the rev. david jones, rector of st. paul's, said he was thrilled with =
robinson's selection, even though he recognizes biblical language speaks =
against homosexuality.=20
"the spirit works through that man so who am i to say god's not supposed =
to do that," he said. "the holy spirit is allowed to color outside the =
lines."=20
many lay people also praised robinson.=20
"he's got a lot to give to this diocese," said nina stevens, an =
episcopalian from pittsfield. she was not among the voters, but came to =
observe and to root for robinson.=20
the episcopal news service says the only other bishop to publicly state =
he is actively gay is otis charles, former bishop of utah, but he made =
the announcement in 1993 after retiring.=20
church and lay leaders recognized their decision has international =
implications in a denomination deeply divided on the issue of =
homosexuality.=20
bishops in the worldwide anglican communion, which includes the =
episcopal church in the united states, approved a resolution in 1998 =
calling gay sex "incompatible with scripture."=20
conservatives in the church of england and elsewhere protested the =
appointment last month of an english bishop with liberal views on =
homosexuality, even though the new bishop vowed to uphold existing =
church policy on the subject.=20
if confirmed at the national convention, robinson would be consecrated =
the ninth bishop of new hampshire in november, and installed next march. =
robinson lives with his partner, mark andrew, in nearby weare and is an =
assistant to retiring bishop douglas theuner. he is a popular preacher =
at area churches and has been active in local causes, such as =
establishing "concord outright," a support group for teenagers.=20
friends say he remains on good terms with his ex-wife and two grown =
children. both of his daughters and his partner were in attendance =
yesterday in a show of support.=20
robinson received 58 of 76 ballots cast by clergy and 96 of 165 lay =
votes. robinson had a clear majority among the clergy and the most lay =
votes of any of the candidates on the first ballot. on the second ballot =
enough lay people gave him the required majority.=20
the other three candidates were the very rev. ruth lawson kirk, rector =
of st. peter church in glenside, pa.; the rev. pamela jane mott, the =
canon pastor at trinity cathedral in portland, ore., and the very rev. =
robert l. tate, rector of st. martin-in-the-fields in philadelphia

after 40 shows and over a decade - i dunno- this isnt at all meant to be
bragging or
- first time i met amy and snuck into a soundcheck 12-5-92 - being allowed
to tape cus i got busted the night before
- the day after my best friends funeral where they dedicated ghost to him
- the colby show where i sang with them
- the hartford '97 show cus i got front row and they were just sooooooooo on...
- the bates/penobscot weekend where i had my first press pass and got to
interview them. 9 14- 15(?) 97...
- dartmorth '98 - just an amazing duo sho
- new haven ct - 10/27/97 - amazing setlist.
- nff 98 - first time i heard rose.
- the 2000 colby show that was probably the best show setlist wise when amy
asked me what i wanted to hear - i yelled romeo and two seconds later - she
just wailed into it.
- nff '93 for the most intense chickenman
- by boston promo show - they were on fire that nite...
shows *i* wished i was at...
providencetown 91 - i still need a boot...
central park '92
wellesley 2000
that's pretty random - i'm not going to go into the personal shows that
just changed my like - i the the show where they dedicated ghost to my best
friend was one of the five things where it had such an influence - i was
really grieving / (looking back - damn close to suicide - a couple nights -
i told myself that a legacy continues and the dedication itself was just a
beginning of honoring my best friend - there is alot of things i do to this
day, to remember him, and i honestly know that show saved my life in many
ways...
nigc - i just got back from a weekend activist gathering and we were
talking after going through noho (it is so much funner when you're out and
the so is with you - and you can find a gay anniversary card!) - about
events that made us who we are - i said seeing fugazi when i was 17 was one
of those moments - i distictly remember after that show - driving home with
my mom and just realing what i saw made me totally rethink or revolutionize
my life - i think seeing ig did that too - along with some biking - some
dis literature and activist events - heck - i'd say joining this list has
changed my life - do you have any idea how many shows i wouldnt have seen
if it werent for a decade on this list...
i'm babbling...

i'd have to say my favorite show was the august 12th, 2000 show in albany,
ny. my friend carrie and i had driven straight through from the pittsburgh
show the night before, got there early, made lots of friends and weathered
the rain during the day until the sun came out about 2 hours before the
show and dried everything up. it was a magnificent show, the moon was
almost full, the feeling in the air was very positive and happy and it was
just a damn good time. and it was free!! (our tax dollars at work
providing free summer concerts in the capital district).
but i'm really biased because that's where carrie and i met our respective
partners and ended up moving here for them! we never made it to the
cleveland show we had intended on attending. ;)

good topic barb!
my absolute favorite ig show was the 1997 lilith fair in minnesota. the
crowd was so surreal. we were like a sea of moving bodies, all moving to
the music. everyone was singing along. that version of ghost was my
favorite ig moment ever! it seemed like everyone in the audience had voices
as great as a&e. i just have not had a better ig concert moment.
i have been lucky enough to have lots of a&e encounters since then that were
priceless. but that concert will always hold a special place in my heart.

on a similar note, the anglican diocese of new westminster (out in b.c., on
the "left coast") had its first officially sanctioned blessing of a same-sex
relationship may 28.
official press release at http://www.wfn.org/2003/05/msg00370.html
diocese of new westminster web site at http://www.vancouver.anglican.ca/ -
headline "synod decides not to halt same-sex blessings"
the rite (the ceremony) http://www.vancouver.anglican.ca/download/rite.pdf
one quote:
<name>, i give myself to you. i love you, trust you, and delight in
you. i will share
your burdens and your joys. i will go with you wherever god calls
us. this is my solemn
promise.
it's making me teary-eyed.
as a priest i know observed in an only slightly different context "i love it

she's confused. obviously. considering that they still have tour
dates and they just put up hte information yesterday, i would
doubt that they have broken up lol! unless it was as recently as
within the last hour (doubting it)

not meaning to sound too jaded when it comes to radio,
but isn't it kind of hard to believe that anyone on
the radio would even consider ig breaking up as
newsworthy?

depends what station you listen to. i'm sure they'd let us know on triple
m in madison, if it even got on the newswire so they'd hear about it. but,
i'm pretty sure mary's coworker was either mistaken, or playing a trick on
her.

well it's easy as i have seen them only twice. the best show was my first
one in cologne last year. they were so into it, amy was smiling the whole
concert, even emily was talkative. the setlist was great. i wasn't really a
fan before and i didn't know what to expect. but i was blown away. i really
can't describe what i felt during and after the show (when i talked briefly
to emily and amy when they wrote autographs and having my photo taken with
amy).

not too many choices if you live in the uk - but cambridge last year, when i was with my family and we all wore wrecking crew t-shirts and stood right up against the stage, dead centre (having got there at 10-30am!) so we were about six feet away from both emily and amy. loved it when emily introduced alison brown on banjo for ctf! they were happy and it was a good setlist, and there was good music nearly all day, as a bonus :)

i love "leaving," too! and i had gotten to the point where i never thought i'd hear it in concert. but i heard it somewhere last fall...was it schenectady? can someone who was at that show confirm? (i also did burlington, vt, manchester nh, and portland, me in that stretch, but i don't think it was any of these--as dictated by my not-entirely-reliable visual and auditory memory!)
anyway, it was so thrilling to hear on of the songs on my "life list!" now the only one i really still need to hear before i die is "love will come to you." they hadn't been playing it for years, then last fall, they had a few requests for it. by looking at setlists, it looks like they worked it up and started playing it right after the last show i attended last year! ugh! oh well...someday i'll hit it just right.
maybe in hampton beach, nh, or northampton, ma or hyannis, ma this year! here's hoping...gina

thought some on this list might be interested to hear this: the ontario
court of appeals has ruled in favor of same-sex marriages. this is a result
of a case from 8 couples here who sued the government for violation of the
charter. the original case (if i remember correctly) went in favor of the
couples and the ruling included a mandate to the government to deal with the
discrimination issue within a two year period. this case is the result of
the government's appeal of that original decision. what an interesting day!

i thought i read recently in curve that she was not necessarily against sharing/trading, but encouraged buying the cds instead of downloading from the net since her livlihood depends on it. there is a song on freedom that says she is listening to all her money-making peers...

i did a paper in college where i related ig songs to different writers' works. i included caramia in that because of the references to "harriet the spy." a blank notebook and a back pocket fade. that says to me she is carrying a notebook around writing songs/ideas. she has carried it so long in her back pocket that it shows wear on the pocket where edges of the notebook are. caramia is (i think italian? someone correct me if i'm wrong). i believe it means "my dear." this tells me that emily is singing about having a partner that riducules her for writing all the time and it hurts her feelings. the "one shoe off" verse relates to a dream sara had, i believe. i think the song is about being a singer/writer and having a partner that just doesn't understand.

my favorite concert is a tie. first, ig at cornell, december 1990. me and my
new best friends were all in the front row. it was awesome. they played
"strange fire," my all time favorite song.
second, tori amos at ithaca college, november 1998. it was the first tori
show for my two best friends and i, and through the glory of general
admission, i wormed us front row spaces directly in front of her. it gives
me chills to think about it even now.
at both those shows, i don't think i could've asked for better set lists.
cheers all.

just passing this on..thought some folks on my various
and sundry lists would be interested!
torrie
from our friends at ndsu:
on june 13th 2003 the national disabled student union
(ndsu) will
launch a
nation wide demonstration demanding equal education.
disabled students,
parents, and disability rights activist have planned
numerous events
around the
nation as part of "ndsu's speak out for equal
education". ndsu planed
the "speak out" in direct response to a bill that the
us house of
representatives recently pasted, that activist say
weakens the
individual's
with disabilities education act (idea). idea - a
federal law that
establishes
special education guarantees equal education to
disabled students in
america's
schools.
in less than a month of planning, the event has
attracted hundreds of
interested individuals. sarah triano - disability
rights activist and
co-
founder of ndsu, states, "we refuse to be left behind
- maintain the
integrity
of idea!" triano, says, "we are doing this because of
the hack job that
is
being done to the law that protects our right to equal
education." on
april
29th the house of representatives passed a bill that
activists say
overhauls
idea and guts protections for disabled students.
organizers are
planning
marches, street theatre, and even an online petition.
naomi ortiz says, "congress says they don't want to
educate us, that it
costs
too much" ortiz, a ndsu member and leader in kids as
self advocates
(kasa),
sees the changes to idea as something that could
affect not only the
education
of disabled students but also the future employment of
disabled people.
she
states, "they affect if and what kind of job we can
get and if we are
able to
go to college". recent statistical data indicates that
close to 70% of
the
disabled population in america are unemployed.
the house past these sweeping changes on the same day
the senate
confirmed
jeffery sutton. sutton, a bush nominee to the sixth
circuit court of
appeals
met strong opposition in the senate during his
confirmation process
from the
disability community. activist claim that sutton has a
history of
conservative
activism and has worked to weaken and or eliminate
federal protections
for
disabled people and other minorities.
now with the senate expected to introduce its own
version of the idea
legislation soon, some advocates are looking for a
much more positive
policy
from senators that may want to regain a better
relationship with their
disabled
constituency after letting them down with sutton.
joe hall, a ndsu responsibility co-chair says that
equal education is
one of
ndsu's primary concerns. "we are made up of disabled
students that face
the
system everyday - and have to live with the
consequences that bad
policies
bring." hall says that the "speak out" has shown a
positive affect in
the
development of ndsu. hall states, "we are gaining
allot of momentum and
things
are starting to pick up."

education"
organizers are

well, i've been lucky enough to hear both of those (at the same show i think

point hope foia and leaving.
lets hope they listen to my pleas and play them both this august.

i missed the beginning of this thread, am i right in assuming (we all know
what happens then but here goes) that someone was wishing to hear leaving live?
when retrospective came out they played it every promo they did, which was so
awesome, i believe that is one of the most beautiful songs ever. i am not sure
how often they play that song livenow, b/c we went to a show, i believe at
the calvin theater in noho and we had pretty close seats and people kept
shouting out requests, and i kept yelling leaving, and amy was saying yeah we'll do
that, no we won't do that, and so i yelled very loudly, leaving, please, and so
amy laughed, and said all right, all right we will do that after this song,
and i yelled thank you, and she thought that was funny. after they finished
whatever song it was, emily said what song are we doing, and amy said leaving,
and em stuck her tongue out like she tasted something bad, and shook her head
no, so amy went off stage, and she did a solo song, and then came back out and i
think they did virginia wolf. and they never did play leaving, so i was
thinking that maybe it has become a sore spot for em like blood & fire is for amy.
just my thought, if in fact that is what was being talked about if
not.......nevermind!

i'd love to here mystery live - i love that song. but my all-time favorite
ig song is "prince of darkness" and i'd love to hear it live, just once!
i'd love it if they played some of my other self-titled album favorites,
like center stage or secure yourself, instead of the usual kid fears
and closer to fine.
i almost peed my pants when they played "ghost" in 2000 at the
house of blues in la. i did let out a happy shriek though. :)

well, that's an interesting way to look at it, but i think the person
being addressed is the one with the notebook. i think it's about a friend
or lover with some sort of mental illness plus early trauma ("how you
mixed with the darkness at such a young age, and in your chemistry,
science and violence turned silence to rage"), and whether that
contributes to the person's art or creativity, and whether, if so, it's
worth it given the impact on his or her life.
that's my theory, anyway!

i recognize that quote, it's from the movie "natural born killers". you have good taste, janet.
years before they were signed to epic, amy did a song called "beauty to disaster" and emily did a song called "play it again, sam." i have live boots of both songs but i'd love to hear the songs recorded again and i'd like to be in the room when they perform the tunes live. the songs are so old it will probably never happen.
i recently bought an album by a canadian singer/songwriter named kathleen edwards called "failer". she writes good folk and pop tunes. she does a song about being hyped by a music industry type called "one more song the radio won't like" that reminds me a bit of neil young. she does another tune about being in love with an outlaw called "six'o clock news" that i liked a lot as well. the cover of the album shows her trying to fix her pickup truck because she said it always breaks down when she's on tour. check her out if you get the chance.

clear channel, and two other corporate conglomerates passed sweeping changes that
could affect the kind of tv shows we watch,
what we hear ( or don't hear) on the radio,
and what we re in the newspapers.
the good news is that you can contact your senators and tell them to support s 106,
which will roll back half of clear channels new law. contact www.commoncauseactioncenter.com (or .net or whatever) to read more info.

i just totally had a flashback and i have to echo
gina's post. my first concert was the park city, ut
concert as well. the venue (which is now a condo
complex) was in the heart of a ski resort, surrounded
on all sides by mountains and trees. right when emily
sang the line "i could go crazy on a night like
tonight", i looked out and saw the sun setting over
the mountains. it was gorgeous and i thought, me too,
emily, me too. gina, we were at the same concert!
