this vine started over on the bbs and since everyone seems to have gotten
their copies, i still have 2 to send out (ready to go) so i thought maybe of
you here might be interested. these would have to go to someone who can copy
and pass on again (as noted below). i'll take the first two emails.

the vine concept involves one person sending out a source cd or cds for
others to copy (at their own expense) and then when they are done they pass
the source cd/cds on to someone else (at their own expense). that way
everyone can make the number and speed and type of recordings they want from
one of the original master cds and everyone on the vine incurs shipping
costs as if it were a trade.

nice sounding audience tape of a very interesting reading/show.

i was fortunate enough to hear "love will come to you" at appilachian st. a few years ago.

"the weakness in me" is one i'd really like to hear.  i saw joan perform it on vh1-c around
a month ago - 'looked like it was from the '70s.

any words of comfort would be appreciated.

he was 13 1/2.  a beautiful dalmatian.  his name
was tara's woodstock rock'n'roll, woody for
short.  he was my graduation present after i got
my paper and was free.  he was a good buddy, and
actually became my father's very best friend.

we used to call him woody the wonder dog.
surviving a whopper of a copperhead bite when he
was around 6.  he used to catch tennis balls and
frisbees.  on his very first walk on a leash at 9
weeks old, a big dog came out of nowhere in a
neighbor's backyard that we were passing and
scared me to death barking viciously at us -
woody bared his teeth and growled at him.  the
little protector 10 times smaller than our
would-be attacker.

he was not a good fetcher.  he used to bring the
stick back, but wouldn't give it to you.  you'd
have to play 'tug of war' until the stick broke.
then he'd drop his half and wait for you to throw
the one in your hand.  his version of fetch -
which could only continue until the stick broke
in half so many times that there was nothing left
to throw.  ...better find a new stick...

he was loyal to everyone in the family, and would
go throughout the house, looking for all of us to
check on each family member.  he made the rounds,
making sure we were all safe and had enough woody
to go around.

he was a food thief.  one night my dad went into
the kitchen to get a napkin.  when he was back,
his fried chicken had miraculously disappeared -
bones and all.  woody was smiling that night.  he
gave himself away licking his lips and i think he
was laughing.

last year he got bitten by a tick and got rocky
mountain spotted fever.  his hearing was already
almost all gone by then.  the fever caused
glaucoma in one eye, and then the other.  even
after a state-of-the-art laser eye surgery, he
was only able to see that one night - but trauma
from the surgery caused a detached retina leaving
him completely blind.  blind and deaf, he slipped
into depression from the darkness.  due to his
advanced age, he was unable to remember where the
walls and furniture were, and could not adjust.
he was no longer the happy dog we once knew.  he
gave up; i don't blame him.

i know it was harder on us than it was on him.
even so, it was easier watching him die today
than it was watching him try to live over the
past month.  i'm not sure what happens when you
die, but i'm pretty sure that this is not all
there is - hey - an emily quote and i didn't even
try.  i like to think that he is somewhere now
running in a field and seeing, and hearing the
birds, and finding boo kitty, who we lost a few
years ago.  or maybe he's being born again, right
now and will be fortunate to be adopted by a nice
family and can give them the same happiness that
he brought to us.

why is it, when you know something is the right
thing to do, your heart won't let you feel good
about it?  my first thought as he slipped away,
was "you're free!", and i even had to smile as i
envisioned him floating above us, on his way to
the next great adventure.  but still, i am sad,
and cry for losing such a wonderful companion.
my life will be less without him in it.  how to
cope?  i hug my other dog, my beagle beanie bean,
and my clown kitty cleo.  but it doesn't really
help.  loving them does not make me feel less of
a loss.  i've never felt this way about losing a
pet.  or a person if you want the honest truth.

i know that death is inevitable.  nobody escapes,
and each of my pets that i've gotten, i've
realized that i will eventually have to face
losing them.  doesn't make you feel any better
though.  the only real comforting thought i've
had is that if people never died, there probably
would be no babies.  if dogs never died, there
probably would be no puppies.  i wouldn't have
wanted to miss out on woody's puppy years for
anything.

oh well.  if you're still reading this - thanks
for letting me share.  it's therapeutic and
helpful to write about it and remember the good
things about my little spotty friend.  if you
have any words of comfort - send them my way.  i
could use a lift.

gods bless you and yours,
tara
