okay, here's mine.
i worked at treasure island casino for three years under david.
david, involved with hte, invited amy & emily out to treasure island for one
of the hte shows. they then showed the footage at the concert.
so, two degrees here.
i could go another route.
i have been a michelle malone fan for years. i go to all of her shows here
in mn. she recognizes me at said shows and makes a point to say hi.
michelle and amy have obvious connections.
yeah!

so, i think it would be interesting to see how many of us out there have
actually not gotten the chance to meet our girls. i have been more than
fortunate on that regards. i have been at an intimate concert where we got
to talk for quite a while. plus i have met them after shows 6 times. once
amy made a point of coming over and talking to us. she noticed us in the
crowd because my sister's shirt matched her shirt (very coincidental) and
she wanted to say how cool she thought that was. so, who hasn't got to meet
amy or emily? and if you haven't, did you try and not succeed or have you
never tried?
i've also met them twice - does that count?

it's been fun reading all the replies to this thread so i thought i'd try to take a different spin and try to make the connection to ig through kevin bacon (who, of course, is the center of universe) and try to keep to the original rules of the six degrees game (making the connections through movies).
here's what i came up with:
my cousin bob played football for the green bay packers with brett favre
brett favre appeared in there's something about mary with keith david
keith david appeared in novocaine with kevin bacon
kevin bacon appeared in hollow man with pablo espinosa
pablo espinosa appeared in boys on the side with ig
there ya go...

ooh, i can do kevin bacon too:
i'm in the cu sociology dept with prof. patti adler, kyra sedgwick's

kyra is married to kevin
kevin was in apollo 13 with tom hanks
tom hanks was in philadelphia
ig was on the soundtrack
soundtrack connection is kinda lame, i know but i didn't think it would be
right to steal deb's pablo espinosa connection... :)

you probably do have a connection somewhere you just don't know about.
that was the idea in six degrees of separation - that everybody in america
can be connected through six steps or less, so that if you had a letter
you wanted to get to someone, you send it to the person you think of who's
most likely to be able to get it to them or to know someone else who can,
and they send it on, and then that other person sends it on too, etc,
until it gets to its destination.
i don't know if six is the true number, though. at the very least,
barbara, you know us all. whoever made that cryptic comment about not
having paid for shows in four years, that's your connection. :)

hey, i'm such a lurker anymore, but oh well, here's a post.
a friend from college moved down to atlanta and got a job at a guitar store,
and she's been amy's checkout person, and she was kinda assigned to be amy's
specific "help-person" when she'd come into the store. but this was years
ago now. also, i remember emmilie saying she was at a club and emily kept
staring at her, though she was a little freaked out by that one. i guess
emily thought she was hot or something :)
i've also hung out with a bit and talked to rose polenzani too, if we can
count that one.
ah well :)

hey,
growing up in atlanta and being about the same age as them, i have lots of
different connections to ig; but here's a nice one i didn't even know i had
until after the fact:
david kehrer was a childhood friend of mine going all the way back to middle
school (one of the first white kids i was ever friends with). he, his sister
heather and i used to shoot baskets and play volleyball ("no bus-stops!") in the
parking lot every day after school while we waited for our parents to come and
pick us up after work.
after high school, i knew from other classmates that he worked in the music
industry; but i hadn't seen or heard anything of him for years until i read
about his death in the papers a few years back. i don't know what his specific
connection to ig was (probably through russell carter, i imagine), but shaming
of the sun is dedicated to him.

since i don't think there's been anything on them on the list yet...for those
of you who have not heard (or heard of) the band sugarland i wanted to put out
a very strong recommendation to check these guys out! they're an up-and-coming
local atlanta band that is just starting to break through. jennifer nettles is
lead vocals, kristen hall is on guitar/vocals, simone simonton (lift) is on
drums and vocals, as well as kristian bush and bret hartley on guitars and
vocals. you can check them out on their home page www.sugarlandmusic.com!
they have a retro-country thing going on that's a lot of fun (and i'm not a
huge fan of country music). also, if you're in the atlanta area they play at
eddie's attic a few times a month and i believe they're in charleston and some
other place in south carolina this weekend. definitely check them out if you
can!!!

i just ordered their cd from amazon based on the list recommendation
- can't wait to get it! i'll also check out sugarland, they sound
great.
if anybody wants some beautiful, sunny, 70s-esque sounds and
excellent harmonies, be sure to check out the thorns (matthew sweet,
shawn mullins and pete droge). they're amazing (and they share the
same manager as ig!).

of you are enjoying them! i know they were slated to open for tracy chapman
for part of her tour, plus they are doing some touring on their own. in
fact, they are in atlanta on july 26th (check that date!) at the red light
cafe. that's a tiny venue where you really can feel the impact of their
music.
enjoy!

i got a copy, too. not all that impressed off the bat, but haven't reached
any conclusions. unfortunately, i missed the tracy chapman show where they
were opening (usually the best way to evaluate a band, imo).

berkeley fleet to run on bio-fuel
by t.t. nhu
mercury news
berkeley, often in the vanguard for far-out ideas, could be the first city in the united states to switch many of its vehicles to a vegetable oil-based fuel that is ecologically safer and smells like . . . french fries.
since last month, 200 of the city's diesel vehicles -- garbage trucks, fire engines and school buses -- have been powered by a bio-diesel fuel called b100.
''any car that runs on diesel can do it, '' said ed silva, the city's senior equipment supervisor. the alternative fuel can be used on any diesel engine with minor or no modifications, and the gas mileage is about the same as regular fossil fuels.
because b100 is free of petroleum products and additives, the emissions are generally cleaner, although some studies indicate bio-diesel increases nitrogen oxide emissions. the vegetable fuel is more expensive than regular diesel.
ann mesnikoff, a sierra club spokeswoman, told the associated press last year there were mixed reports on whether using bio-diesel results in significant air quality improvements, and that it is questionable whether the production of such biological fuels consumes more energy than it conserves.
but berkeley officials predict that they will be at the forefront of a movement to bio-diesel fuel.
''what happens in berkeley becomes the conventional wisdom in three or four years,'' said mayor tom bates. ''we were the first to ban smoking in public places, do recycling, and put cuts in curbs for wheelchairs, and even if we have to spend a little extra for bio-diesel, we think it's worth it because of the environment.''
bio-diesel can be made from just about any plant oil and animal fat -- soybean, canola, mustard seed oil or even some kitchen waste. the recycled cooking oil is collected from restaurants by rendering companies that specialize in waste grease, said randall von wedel, a medical biochemist and bio-diesel consultant for the city.
the glycerin is removed from the oil and fat to create the b100 fuel used by berkeley.
randall said the fuel emits about half the greenhouse pollutants of regular diesel, and according to the u.s department of energy's national renewable energy laboratory, is 94 percent less likely to cause cancer.
dave williamson of the berkeley ecology center, a pioneer in curbside recycling in 1973, was an early advocate for the city to make the switch. as operations manager for the center, williamson changed the vehicles to bio-diesel two years ago.
it wasn't a hard sell in berkeley, where the local delivery service is pedal express and sales of hybrid cars are the highest in the nation, according to toyota.
at the end of 2002, with the support of bates and six resident commissions, the city council voted unanimously to convert the fleet to biodiesel.
in january, with little fanfare, the city's fleet of 200 diesel vehicles began using b20, a mixture of 20 percent bio-diesel and 80 percent conventional petroleum-based diesel fuel. in june, the diesel fleet switched to b100 -- 100 percent bio-diesel fuel.
the city has 500 vehicles that use mostly cleaner fuels, including all-electric, hybrids, compressed natural gas and b20. it is also exploring fuel additives to enhance performance. because police cars are non-diesel and use unleaded fuel, that fleet will not be converted to bio-diesel.
in addition to significantly lowering emissions, bio-diesel is safer to transport, store and use, its advocates say. while diesel costs $1.68 a gallon, bio-diesel costs $2.15, but bio-diesel fuel prices don't fluctuate much, said pat o'keefe of golden gate petroleum, the distributor.
''bio-diesel is more expensive,'' said von wedel, ''but the health benefits are enormous. carbon monoxide emission is reduced by 55 percent, smoke by 65 percent, and there is no sulfur, which produces acid rain.''
a report by the engine manufacturers association, however, noted that bio-diesel fuels emit more nitrogen oxides, a component of air pollution, and may present some storage problems because they are less stable with respect to oxidation.
none of the bio-diesel advocates believes that the fuel will resolve long-term energy problems. ''bio-diesel isn't the end-all,'' bates said. ''we're looking for even cleaner alternatives such as additives or fuel cells -- but that's down the road a ways.''
although fewer than 1 percent of all cars in the united states run on diesel fuel, bio-diesel production in the country is on the rise. commercial sales have leaped from 500,000 gallons in 1999 to 15 million in 2002.
city officials believe berkeley is the first city in the nation to change from fossil fuel to alternative energy. two cities in florida have expressed an interest in the conversion.
celebrities are beginning to use bio-diesel vehicles. woody harrelson drives one at his place in maui. the indigo girls and the lollapalooza concert tours used bio-diesel buses on their tours this year.
those who drive and repair bio-diesel fuel vehicles in berkeley are pleased with the results. performance has not changed but the aroma has.
said mechanic bruce mazur with a smile: ''it burns clean and smells like french fries.''
