hi,
i was in the front row, at the calvin, and this was my 30 some odd show, i
didn't see any of the things you have described in your post. in fact as me,
and my gf (it was her 40 some odd show) were commenting to each other about how
much we love noho because we find the crowd so respectful! the only incident
we saw was one woman (who was pushing 40) jumped up on the stage and grabbed a
pick that emily had thrown on the floor after her smokin solo during
chickenman/bitterroot and that was way after the girls had left the stage. i am really
sorry to hear that you had such a bad show! i agree that a crowd can ruin the
experience for you, hampton beach was the best example of that for us! i hate
ga shows, and the reason is because the crowds usually suck! and the funny
thing is that most of the people who act like such assholes at these shows are
veteran ig "fans" and a lot of whom i am sure are members of this list! i think
these people feel because they have gone to a certain number of shows, and
traveled far distances they have an entitlement that the rest of the fans, who by
the way have also traveled, paid for their tixs, and most importantly got to
the venue early to be near the front, don't seem to have! hampton beach left
such a bad taste in our mouths, that i know the gods of good karma, and
politeness smiled down on us when we showed up at the calvin theater without tickets
just hoping to get into the venue, and then ended up front row center!! the
more shows we go to, and see the same people over and over again the more we
start to realize who the asshole are, and who the true fans are who get it, they
get what going to these shows are all about, and they understand that they are
not the only ones there, that everyone has come to this show w/ one
expectation or another, and who is willing to on occasion sacrifice their agenda and to
think about the other people who are there to have a good time, and hear
great music!!! sorry for the rant, but as i write this i have the image of the
good, the bad & the ugly from our small portion of the ne tour, and even though
the good very much outweighs the bad, the bad still suck!! i guess the one
image that sticks w/ me the most is of the girl who cut everyone in line at
hampton beach telling the balking crowd she just needed to use the toilet, and was
planning on heading to back after, passing out in the front row over the
barracade, and when she was staggering out of the crowd finally, she nearly knocked
over a girl in the front row
( who was not staggering drunk by the way) and proceeded to give the girl the
finger, and call her the c word....real class act, sister!!

take care all,

janet

p.s. i will post pics when i get them back  :)

i agree, i loved both shows in so many ways, and i would also like to say
(after my somewhat negative last post....giggle) that i thought the crowd at the
cape was wonderful!!!! and there were so many men, and they were dancing and
signing along, and it was just awesome!!! at one point when people kinda rushed
the stage there were about 10 guys all together in the front screaming and
jamming to galileo me and my gf cracked up....too cool!! my request bring more
boys to ig shows, lol!!!!

i totally agree.  at the hte show in mn this past spring it was a very mixed
crowd.  i would say literally almost 50/50 guys/girls.  that made it feel
very different, but very fun.  it's so cool to see a group of guys dancing
along to our girls.  some may disagree, but i think it is fun to see the
crowd becoming more mixed.

be signed in before you hit the link otherwise the files are hidden to you.
getting the id is easy. hope this is better, although i do not know if they
have bandwidth limits as well...........i hope not. i will be adding the
other three new tracks played at chat tonight so check back.

there will be another show, but there won't be more ticket sales. used or unused tickets from last night will be the only way to get into the show because the venue was already at capacity. the girls said they were looking at some time around oct. 1. i haven't seen anyone write up a set list yet, so here it is as i remember it:

closer to fine
become you
hammer and a nail
fill it up again
dairy queen
shame on you
yield
ghost
galileo

it had to be a short show so that we could get out before dark. a large crowd of people wandering through a pitch-black central park is negative. nevertheless, it was a good show and was nice to have the girls put a good ending on a crummy day.

if anyone who's downloading them would be kind enough to ftp (or e-mail if
necessary) them to me, i would be most grateful.  i'm happy to put them up
on an accessible web site (that does not have bandwidth limits) for anyone
else who would like them.

hey y'all,

i received this email earlier this evening from my friend kristi martel,
an extremely talented songwriter/musician/vocalist and a wonderful human
being.  please take whatever action you deem appropriate under these sad
circumstances...

sadly,
tim

hello friends and fans,

i have horrible news.

my partner, littlebird, was found dead about 300 yards south of lands
end in san francisco on friday.  i don't even know what to say...

she was missing for over 2 days when friends of hers found her in her
favorite place to climb, by the ocean.  it's gorgeous there.  she had
never brought me there but i knew that's where she'd be.  i tried so
hard to find her but couldn't.  i am devastated.  we wanted to be
together forever.  we had just affirmed that the morning before she
left.

so then...  there is everything else since then.  her family doesn't
respect our relationship.  we hadn't yet filed for domestic
partnership, so i had no legal protection.  i was not legally next of
kin.  the family came to our home and took everything they could.  it
was horrible.  i feel raped.  even some of her friends came here to act
like vultures.

i am grieving hard and have amazing friends around me all the time.
they couldn't believe how strong and calm i was in the face of such
disrespect.

thanks to everyone who's given me support through this.  there is a
memorial service on sunday at 3pm at mcc sf 150 eureka st in the
castro.  i will be planning my own private memorial service as well.
also, tomorrow there is a funeral being held in richmond va, her
hometown.  her family didn't tell me about the funeral because they
didn't want me there, but some of you on the east coast may want to
attend...

i don't even know what to say.  it's just so hard.  i wanted you all to
know because i've been telling you all about littlebird for so long and
many of you have seen us perform our music together.  please keep me
and littlebird in your prayers.

this of course is changing my plans.  we were about to tour through the
southwest and across the country together in october and november and
to move to ri together in december.  i will still move to ri, but the
timing and route is unclear.  i may not tour this fall at all.  i will
of course continue touring as soon as i can get on with my life.  but i
am trying to give myself plenty of time to grieve my sweetheart,
friend, lover, music partner, life partner and soulmate, littlebird.

many blessings,
kristi

ps - go say something about my life with littlebird here.  they are
shutting me out and i can't even bare to look, but you can tell them
about me...

well i've had a couple of days to absorb these two shows.  these women =
are totally awesome!!!   emily, as stated before has lost quite a bit of =
weight and looks really, really good, much more healthy than over the =
past few years and amy, well amy just looks damn good!  she looks like =
she's put on a little weight which is good because while she wasn't =
feeling great over the winter she got quite a bit thinner.

my husband went with me to hampton and just arriving there was a joy.  =
here in manch vegas we've been socked into this rain & humidity pattern =
and driving out to hampton and standing in a sweaty club didn't sound =
too appealing, but almost as soon as we hit the hampton town line, the =
skies opened up to a beautiful blue and the humidity went away.  we got =
to the casino around 6:30 and found a good place near the stage =
(probably about 10 peeps back)  it was hot in there!^)($)(*#*  kim =
richey was great.  i love hearing her on the river (92.5)  the girls =
came out and they were awesome.  you've all seen the set list and review =
of the concert.  the crowd was a good mix of men/women which was great.  =
my only bad moment came when some young girls were commenting about me, =
the old straight woman with a "guy".  i don't know......

anyway, after the show we went for a walk on the beach and saw the moon =
and mars (cool) and headed back for the parking lot.  once the cars =
started moving (after @ 1/2 hour) we were near the tour bus and amy came =
out to meet peeps along the fence.  hubby told me to go out, but there =
were already quite a few peeps there and i would have been near the back =
and i thought i'd just wait until hyannis.  i had it all planned =
out.....

hyannis - i took my friend monica and we found our 5th row seats which =
turned out to be 2nd row seats behind the orchestra pit (where sulli =
works) because they take out the first 3 rows.  we're blown away.  found =
some girls outside who didn't have tickets and they got my extras (sorry =
rena lol)  met a couple of listees.  that was way cool.  amy came out to =
introduce cordero and i'm thinking "nice shirt amy!" cause it matched =
the one i was wearing!  how cool is that!!!

during get out the map i called my daughters on my cell cause that's the =
song we sang together when it  was still cool to sing along with mom and =
a&e laughed when they saw me holding up my phone.  made eye contact =
w/amy during galileo.  i think one of my favorite moments from that =
night was watching the whole picture during galileo when the girls kept =
the stage revolving, the house lights were up and everyone was on their =
feet singing and dancing (the preggers woman & her man in the front row =
- man was he ever into that song!!)  the whole scene seemed surreal.    =
a good mixed crowd too.

mon & i were going to stick around afterward, but the bus was parked =
with the door away from the parking lot and a really mean security guy =
was there ushering everyone away.  mon was tired and i was parked near =
the front of a long row of cars so we left.  i was so disappointed cause =
i wanted so badly to meet amy that night.  i guess this time was not =
meant to be.  hopefully their next trip to new england.  (hear that =
girls???don't stay away to long!)

anyone have boots yet?

peace,
jen

i'm too sick to make the folk festival show tonight in lyons. if anyone can
use my tickets (2), please email me at mdahms@hotmail.com. they are being
held at will call. i hate that they will go to waste. i'm absolutely
heartbroken that i can't go, but as sick as i am it just isn't a good idea.
if anyone boots this show, i'd love a copy. thanks.

why the girls go for indigo
amy ray chats about the indigo girls? current tour,
their upcoming cd and why lesbians relate to the band

by brian moylan

the indigo girls, the folk/rock duo with the large
lesbian following, are coming to town next week. for
the past several years, they?ve been visiting this
region every summer.

?we?re just on tour to kind of play some of our new
songs and work them out a bit,? explains amy ray. ?we
always have new songs. even when we don?t have a new
album, we have new songs.?

ray and emily salier, both lesbians, met while in grad
school in atlanta, and burst onto the music scene in
1989. then, they had a hit with ?closer to fine,? and
won a grammy for best contemporary folk album for
their self-titled debut. (that same year, though, they
lost the best new artist grammy to milli vanilli.)

since then, the indigo girls have released 11 albums,
done lots of touring and successfully cultivated a
huge gay ? but especially lesbian ? fan base.

while ray and salier, who are not a couple, were never
locked in the closet, they didn?t come out until the
lyrics of a song on 1997?s ?shaming of the sun? album
announced that they are gay.

the indigo girls have said that they don?t want to be
pigeonholed as a ?lesbian band,? but ray is glad the
group has a lot of gay fans.

?as a woman in the world, it?s hard to find a
consistent set of women who are out playing music, and
as gay women it?s even harder because everything is so
heterosexual-based,? she says. ?it?s all geared around
relationships between men and women. the romance of
rock ?n? roll is about a young male rock star falling
in love with a woman.?

to some extent, ray says everyone can identify with
this.

?but at a certain point, you just want to hear
something you can relate to,? she adds. ?i think
that?s why the lesbian audience is with us.?

but there is more to their lesbian appeal than just
the fact that they are women singing about falling in
love with women.

?it?s not just who we?re sleeping with, it?s a common
universe of images and sounds, and a way of looking at
the world,? ray says.

the lesbian-centric appeal may be one reason to go see
the duo. another reason is that this summer the indigo
girls are on tour without a band and without electric
guitars.

using acoustic guitars, ray and saliers will be on the
stage alone at wolf trap in vienna, va., monday
evening, serving up the lush harmonies and folk
rhythms that put them on the map.

they have a somewhat unorthodox way of preparing for
their performances.

?we do it at dinner before we play,? ray explains. ?we
sit down and make a set list and practice anything we
don?t know. there are always songs we need to review.?

the women also have other ways to connect with their
fans at concerts.

?we?ll have a certain number of people who go to every
show in a row and they make requests, and we play
their requests the next night,? she adds. ?we always
consider the audience.?

ray says the indigo girls also consider the type of
venues in which they are playing.

?when we?re playing outside, we know we need to do
lots of things that will draw people together, because
the focus is so dispersed, so we?re less likely to
play a ballad that no one knows,? ray explains.

with the material they plan to share monday, there
most likely will be new songs that no one in the
audience has ever heard. this is because they are
slowly moving in another direction.

the band?s 2002 cd, ?become you,? was more
acoustic-based than some of their previous albums, and
the music being written for their still untitled new
cd, which is scheduled to be released in early 2004,
is a bit heavier on the rock.

?it?s much more diverse,? ray notes.

and after the success of her 1999 solo album, ?stag,?
ray is now working on another solo project with the
lesbian punk trio the butchies.

?it?s different on a lot of levels. the emphasis
lyrically is songs i feel more comfortable singing as
a singular voice,? she explains. ?the last album was a
lot about gender and my relationships with men ? and
the man in me. it felt like one voice needed to be
saying these things.

1.  why does the author focuss mostly on amy
and emily's sexual orientation, to the point
of excluding the fact that more and more           straight couples
are at their shows too?

2.  amy and emily officially came out ofthe              closet to
fargo/moorehead radio listening
audience during an hte interview in 1995,
so why does this author simply assume that
because she comes out so blatantly gay in
shame on you  that that is when ig made
it official? they made it official long before
     before that.

3.  why does the author  have to even                     mention that
fiasco of a group, milli
     vanilli,when they are an embarassment
     to the music industry?

4. why does he make it sound like the pseudo
musicians that milli vanilli were, are better
than ig because they won a more                       prestigious
grammy ? big deal.  he should       also mention that milliy vanilly got
caught           lip-syncing and had their grammy taken
away.

how (lesbian) many (lesbian) times (lesbian) can (lesbian) the
(lesbian) author (lesbian) include (lesbian) the (lesbian) word
(lesbian) lesbian (lesbian) in (lesbian) this (lesbian) article
(lesbian)?

why not talk about their music instead of focusing on them being a
"lesbian duo"?  we are more than our sexuality!  i'm quite sure that
amy tried downplaying their sexual orientation, but "some people"
just can't get past them being lesbian.  <sigh>

these are littlebird's home pages - what a terrible loss we've
suffered...

http://www.littlebirdband.com/index.html
http://home.earthlink.net/~heyamy/

kristi stayed with me for four days during her april tour this year,
which included a gig at nietzsche's opening for peter mulvey, whose
guitarist and co-writer, david goodrich, accompanied rose polenzani when
she opened for ig at spac a few years back - both artists shared a mutual
admiration for each other's work - the crowd was limited due to a
dangerous ice storm - peter suffered a high speed tire blowout en route -
but both artists gave awe-inspiring performances...

i was going through some difficult changes at the time, and kristi's
tarot reading provided the guidance i needed to get through the
transition...

kristi's life has been totally rent asunder by this tragedy.  she needs
all the support and community we can muster...

thanks for reading this...

if you steal from one source, it's 'plagiarism' - if you steal from many,
it's 'research...'

this guy's article was clearly the latter - there wasn't an original
thought anywhere - and the girls' sexual orientation is rather old
'news'...

what a waste of copy....

the ig performance at the rocky mountain folks festival was one of the best
i've seen yet.  and the sound was fantastic.  the audience was listening....
didn't keep a setlist, both amy and emily looked wonderful (emily is
definitely thinning down - looking good), the crowd stayed in their lawn
chairs and the girls couldn't thank the audience enough for just listening.
it was great.  no screaming, signs, or the usual standing show- just music
fans that gave them the respect they totally deserved.  i've never heard them
this beautiful.  it was truly a dream show.   moving it up the list to one of
the top five shows i think i've ever seen and heard.   it would be nice if
they played more shows that created such a quiet setting.  emily's guitar
prowess was spectacular ( and no i'm not a gusher).  amy messed up on her
harmonica and apologized about two songs later; said something like,  "it's
always sound  good when i play it at home alone; but then aren't most things
you do alone better.." both in good humor and glad to be in colorado in the
light.  on one of amy's new songs, about a friend that passed away from
ovarian cancer, oh - called, "let me go easy" (i think), she ran up the
octaves into emily range in several parts of the song.   her voice sounds
really solid and warm.  emily's sounded more pure than usual - her notes were
crystal clear and she hit all of them perfectly.  the harmonies were beyond
lennon/mccartney or simon and garfunkel. (yes i know we all know that :-) )
i must have done something special to be at the right place right time last
night. (must have subconsciously channeled cheryl wheeler there just now -
whoops)
it was one of those shows that are like life moments you feel honored to have
been a part of.  the  ig audience sang their parts wonderfully in tune.
there were quite a few people who hadn't seen/heard them before and were
completely blown away by their music and talent.  couldn't stop talking about
their harmonizing.
after their last song but the lyon's crowd just stood, (big effort getting out
of those low back beach chairs you sit in all day), and clapped until they
finally came back out to sing an encore.  haven't seen them do that in a
while.  it was kind of funny; when they came back out; they both headed toward
the guitars - but sulli had already taken them away. <g>  so we were blown
away with finlandia as an encore.  awesome experience.

divinely inspired, devilishly run!

well, not so much a sighting as a hearing.  i was listening to one of my
favorite public radio programs tonight, marketplace [marketplace.org], and the
interlude music right after a story about us/canadian lumber issues was "the
wood song"!  it was all instrumental -- no lyrics at all -- but it was a nice
sort of inside joke touch.  someone at marketplace has a subtle sense of humor,
and not just this time since sometime in the past couple of weeks, i remember
they had a story about "search engine wars" and right after that they played the
instrumental part of joan osborne's "spider web".

hey all,

believe it or not, i actually wasn't that offended by this article.  i didn't understand the title at first.  when i think of "the girls," i'm thinking of amy and emily.  so, "why a&e go for indigo" just wasn't making sense.  why do they like themselves?  anyway, the bits of info about when the met (in high school, not grad school) and when the officially "came out"  the first time (i believe) they were in curve magazine (which at the time, might still have been called 'deneuve') the cover quote was "amy says the 'l' word."  and that was from 1994. i remember amy said then she wanted to be known as an artist first, then a lesbian.  i think i read later that her identities as an artist/activist/lesbian were inseparable and could not be turned off or lessened at any point.  she just is who she is.  i've read soooooo many articles over the years and to find one this late in the game (in terms of them being a band) with such inaccurate info is kind of sad.  there are hundreds of
articles already repeating this same info the writer could've read to get more accurate info, than relying on his own detective skills.  i was less bothered than just felt sorry for him for being so careless, thinking anyone who "knows" ig, knows his info is off.

anyway, the fixation on lesbians didn't actually bother me.  i was actually interested in reading an article dedicated solely to determining why lesbians like ig music.  i don't know that i've ever read an article that has attempted to explain this phenomena.  why do lesbians like a lesbian band?  there's always, of course, the obvious reasons.  lesbians sing about things other lesbians can relate to.  but, the topic being tackled by a non-lesbian kinda makes it iffy.  regardless, i think amy's responses were wonderful.

okay, the bit about milli vanilli, i really don't think was meant to say in any way that they are better artists than ig.  i think he was just pointing out the unfortunate circumstances that 'the girls' didn't have an opportunity to be recognized for their talent/music because that was the year the music industry was duped into believing 'mv' was a legitimate act.  why they didn't give the award to another nominee, however, is beyond me!?!?

> the duo.

okay, this line is quite fishy!  you should go to an ig show because there will be a lot of lesbians there.  since when has this ever been a reason to go to a show.  usually, my interpretation of how non-lesbian concert-goers see the large percentage of lesbians at ig shows is a/ they don't care, they're decent human beings b/they think "eeew, what a bunch of ugly, unavailable women.  none of 'em better look at my girlfriend, unless i can get in on the action, too" or c/ lesbians?  where?  what are you talking about?
i've never seen anyone (i.e. a guy) step back at an ig show and say, "hey check out all the hot dykes!!!"  except, of course, i'm sure many a queer girl has had such a thought.  this line is more confusing than offensive.  if it weren't so wrong, it'd be quite offensive.  but, again, the guy just seems to be in the dark here.

> they have a somewhat unorthodox way of preparing for
> their performances.

uh, i don't see what's so unorthodox about their method.  seems pretty sensical to me.  maybe it's because i've got those lesbian brain waves going and i go for indigo because i'm a (queer) girl! :)

> with the material they plan to share monday, there
> most likely will be new songs that no one in the
> audience has ever heard.

no, this is not true.  just people who don't have any recent boots won't know the newest songs.  most people won't know the new stuff.  but, the lucky few certainly will.

> this is because they are slowly moving in another direction.

okay, here's some more non-sensical stuff.  their last album was an attempt to be a throwback to their original style, very acoustic, harmony-filled, and "softer."  they're albums leading up to "become you" were all more and more diverse-instrumentally, electrified, and more rockin' than the first albums they put out.  so slowly going off in a different direction (heavier on the rock) is not true.  they would be continuing on the path they had been on before the departure from it with the "acoustic album," become you.  poor guy, to more informed fans, he just looks like he really didn't do his homework.  or maybe, i just don't understand what he's saying...

> ?it?s different on a lot of levels. the emphasis

this last little bit of info "amy quote", however, is totally worth the whole article in all of its messed-up glory. i love amy quotes.  and this is just really nice stuff to hear/read her say.

okay, i think i've said enough for now.

i too, think that this article is being taken way
too seriously.  it's not like it's in a national
magazine off the shelf from your local barnes and
noble.  the washington blade is just a little
local rag that i think is distributed in gay
bookstores and maybe clubs (correct me if i'm
wrong you dc'ers).  the person who wrote it
probably had a friend of a friend who set up the
interview, and he probably didn't even get paid.
i'd seriously doubt if writing is this guy's
career.  anyhow - it's written by a gay guy for a
(mostly) gay-guy audience.

since i havent seen a setlist or a review up yet , i will try to give a quick
rundown...

i particularly enjoyed tonights show -i thought the crowd was great - even if
everyone wasnt dancing (although we all were in my section which was great)
everyone seemed to be singing and pretty respectful of the new stuff.

for all you fashion conscious fans  - amy and emily both looked great. amy
was in a tank top and plaid pants (not the ones with the matching kilt, just
some red white and blue plaid) and emily was in a t-shirt covered up by some long
sleeved shirt that appeared to have been bedazzled on the back.

they sounded awesome. got to see new songs  with only one guitar player
(crazy game-esque) but they both took turns singing without guitars... here was the
setlist:

hammer and nail
shame on you
become you
power of two
perfect world
fill it up again
gone again
deconstruction
devotion
wood song
yield
new emily song (free in you - or something - i cant remember and i cant read
my handwriting)
dairy queen - with emily on mandolin - thats a first for me
closer to fine
cordova
collecting you
chickenman >>>bitterroot

encore:
all that we let in
kid fears
galileo

so thats about it - i thought cordero was great - all in all a great show
from start to finish. they seemed tobe in good moods, joked about the power grid
and the need to search for alternative energy sources (considering that is
what the entire last honor the earth tour was about) talked about the new record
- doesnt have a name yet...etc.

for all those who ent tonight - i hope you had as much fun as i did - and
hopefully i will see some of you tomorrow night in baltimore.

peace
sasha

wow.  i am in awe.  i love the new songs.  almost
bad to hear them with the acoustic duo though,
since i know that i am almost guaranteed
disappointment when the new album comes out with
the backing band.  but what a treat.

emily's writing in particular shines.  she truly
amazes me.  i thought when deconstruction and
she's saving me came out, that it was possibly
the best of her career (ghost and wood song
notwithstanding).  and just when you think she
couldn't possibly grow any further in her
writing, she does.  makes me selfishly dread the
day when she stops writing, and stops sharing
with us this wonderful gift.

amy's songs sound pretty decent, but i admit i
can't really hear what she's singing as well as
emily's lyrics.  i guess i'll have to just wait
for the album.

both a&e looked great - i swear, i don't think
they've aged much over the past several years.
it's like when shaming came out, i think their
looks just stopped, and i haven't really seen
many changes in either one of them since then.
wish i had that talent.

setlist - by no means in order, and incomplete
i'm sure...

hammer and a nail (yay!)
wood song
shame on you
get out the map
deconstruction
devotion
chickenman/bitterroot combo (liked it!)
lots of new stuff...can't name it all
closer to fine
become you
yield
collecting you
gone again
power of two
kid fears (guh - i'm so sick of this song)
galileo

things they talked about - the blackout mostly,
and about how they had to quit because it was too
dark.  amy commented how orderly everyone was,
lining up and leaving in a little line guided by
the park rangers.  emily commented on how cool it
was to see mars.  they got a little political
talking about the focus of the current
government, and i can't remember exactly what
they said relating on energy policy, the grid,
and nukes, but if someone else remembers, feel
free to send it on.

both were smiley and in good spirits.  the place
was packed!  i don't think i've ever seen wolf
trap that crowded.  good singy crowd.
fortunately i got into a 'dancey' section on the
left front, so i really got to enjoy myself
without feeling guilty for standing.

one funny thing - since y'all have been talking
about boys - they were in larger numbers here
too, as was the straight crowd.  the funny moment
though - a guy with a very deep very loud voice
yells "i love you amy!"  we all were laughing in
our section - you just never hear that from such
a manly voice!  girls are always screaming that,
but this was quite a departure.  anyhow.  i was
amused.

that's it really.  oh - the only other thing i
can remember is that they commented on ani
difranco - asked if anyone in the audience had
seen her, and that she rocked, and that they had
gotten a note from her, or had left her one - i'm
not real clear.  anyhow - they said that's how
they communicate with their friends who are
touring and playing the same venues - they write
each other notes and leave them for the other
people.  sounds pretty cool.

oh - one more thing - emily said (not an exact
quote), "i know there are a lot of you who are
out there who come to more than one show and we
really appreciate that, we're really thankful for
everybody's support."

that's all for me.  it's 2am and i gotta work in
the morning.  but guess what - yay for me, i got
a new job today that comes with a big promotion
and a 15% raise, yee ha!

rock on,
t.

i agree with janet! i often feel like one of the token men at shows. i don't

we sang it sometimes in church when i was growing up.  you can find it in the
united methodist hymnal (1989).  it is hymn number 437, entitled "this is my
song", and was originally composed by sibelius, jean (1865-1957).  i tried to
find it elsewhere online, but without much luck.  i did find a few score books,
but i couldn't tell if they had vocal arrangements or not.

know amy has a new one where she is solo but the octaves for part of the
song seem like emilys voice - and i think emily debuted a new one for the

actually, a lot of the guys i know liked them in college because it
was a good way to get chicks.  :)  no joke.  when you're a guy in
college, if you want to get girls to come to your dorm room, all you
have to do is play the opening chords of closer to fine on  your
guitar and then <knock knock knock>...worked for me on numerous
occasions and i wasn't even trying, i was just playing ig for the fun
of it!

then i'd break into a who song and they'd run away.

indigo girls

the wolf trap stage was a metaphor-free zone during monday's indigo girls
show.

unlike ani difranco, who last week brought a similar crowd -- overwhelmingly
young, left-of-center and female -- to the vienna venue, the indigo girls
aren't afraid of melody, or of comprehensible lyrics. the girls' 1992 hit
"galileo," for example, is indeed about galileo, and they dub the old guy the "king of
insight."

on record, such plain speaking sometimes comes off as sophomoric, and can
inspire giggling from anybody not on the folk duo's bandwagon. but live, emily
saliers, 40, and amy ray, 39, exuded an utter lack of pretense -- saliers never
went long without telling the fans, "thanks, y'all!" -- which explained the
accessible songwriting and made rooting for the georgia-based pair easy, even
for an outsider.

everybody danced during "closer to fine," the duo's first single for epic
records, released in 1989, and "hammer and a nail." the crowd swayed during their
many anthems for the young and hopelessly romantic, including "power of two"
and "kid fears."

the girls, who appeared sans band, aren't touring behind any new product, but
announced that they'd just finished recording an as-yet-untitled cd that
should hit the bins early next year. the faithful listened respectfully while ray
introduced some of the new material, including a song about the imperfect
world, titled "perfect world," and an unnamed number that had an opening couplet
any country crooner would be proud of: "i heard that you were drunk and mean /
down at the dairy queen."

the fans nodded along while the girls delivered the white-guilt trips "become
you" and "shame on you," and rocked out during saliers's guitar work on
"chicken man." and the crowd sang every word of "galileo," even "king of insight,"
with nary a giggle.

several songs from the danbury, ct into a yahoo briefcase for download.  i
booted the show, so these mp3s were created directly from the source.

hi y'all,

this was an interesting program on talk of the nation.  actually spanning 2
days - aug 19 & 20.  (i didn't hear tuesday's show)  it's about reknewable
energy and energy in general.  a hot topic since the blackout last week.
they speak of wind energy, which hte was focusing on this past tour and an
issue close to emily & amy.
http://www.npr.org/programs/totn/

my inlaws live in vt and have a beautiful view of the wind turbines in
southern vt (wilmington area)  that are owned by green mountain power.
here is their website about the wind turbines.
http://www.gmpvt.com/whoweare/wind.shtml.  we went up yesterday to check
them out but weren't able to get up close at all, but they do have tours,
etc. if there is interest.

peace,
jen

ok, i am posting baltimore, md after last's amazing show.  not a lot of time to post.  but can i just say that i had the best birthday show ever?  ;)

now they're all over for me... chat, ct, nh, noho, wolf trap, and baltimore.... what a great mini tour!!!  i am heading back to california tonight.  :(

as fas as the question about new songs, let me list the ones that i have heard to this date.  this is off the top of my head, so i apologize for any mistakes:  dairy queen (not that new), fill it up again (not brand new), let me go easy (again, not brand new), perfect world, cordova (sp?), all that we let in, come on home, free in you....  ok, i think i am forgetting one.  help?!?!

oh, and one word about that why the girls like indigo article... was it just my skimming, or did the author really misspell emily's last name as "salier"?  oy.

ok, i have a plane to catch.  to all of you who i met on this tourl, y'all were great!!!

i listen to http://www.live365.com which has a free service (and i
dont' find their ads too annoying after a while, they just blend into
the background) i listen to the womenwhowrock (not a typo, really
a w before r) and siren songs. both play the girls fairly often
(womenwhowrock more so than siren songs) as well as melissa
ferrick, ani difranco, michelle malone, sarah mclachlan, etc.
very nice collection of womyn's music!

i like netscape radio (which has merged with spinner).
the girls are often on femalefocus and folk, and
occasionally on indierockgrrrrls. there are lots of
fun stations, all free. i also enjoy james taylor djs
and road trippin'.

when i went to newport - i heard about sirius - which seems like a kick
butt service - their promo material is way cool (i got a hate off, love on
shirt) i did not think it was really reasonable for me since i don't own a
car and it's like 200 bucks for the satellite unit receiver...

but if you subscibe they have 150 channels - online - with dsl it may be
the way to go - they have 3 folk stations - a g/l/b/t/ station and some
left talk show station - no democracy now :( but it seems cool for 13 bucks
a month.

since i havent seen a review up of this one either - i will try to give my
rundown - but usually reviews aint my thang...so bear with me here....

the girls seemed in really good spirits again - at first it seemed like it
was going to be a "closed eyes" amy night - but then she got into it, and we
even got to see some away from the mic dancing with the guitar (old school amy
dancing - reminiscent of the closer to fine video)

they were great agian - although i enjoyed the setlist from wolftap more - it
seemed like every time they finally got everyone out of their seats and
dancing, they would follow with a slow song..... but the crowd was very respectful
again - very quiet during the new stuff, very loud in their applause and
appreciation.

lots of onstage banter - emily commented on how great baltimore is - she went
to lunch at the hidden bean etc.  later on some girls from the side balcony
yelled "40 watt club" and emily responded saying, "that's in athens - are ya'll
from georgia"
the crowd starts cheering and then emily asks, "are those the cheap seats up
there - with the side view?"
then amy said something like, "oh no - dont look from up there, i hate my
profile"
then a fan yells, "well we love your profile"
amy started to blush and said, "you all sound like my dad..."

another time - someone yelled for "back together again" - to which emily
responded - "oh god - thats an old one - i wrote that song like twenty years ago"
- and then something about how its sort of bad...and then amy chimed in, "how
bout that - a prodigy by age twenty - i knew when i saw her on the playground
that she had to be a prodigy"

what else what else.....i was writing a setlist down, but i lost my pen when
i got my camera taken away by the security guard (got it back at the end
though - and a few nice pictures, but not many - i am going to try ot post those
later)

what i can remember from the setlist (in no particular order):

let it be me
power of 2
become you
collecting you
let me go easy
fill it up again
dairy queen
perfect world
she's saving me
yield
shame on you
ozilline
get out the map
closer to fine
land of canaan
prince of darkness
romeo and juliet

encore:
watershed (during which amy forgot some of her words in the first verse, but
it didnt matter, the crowd was singing along so loud she got right back - this
also evoked a big smile from her)
galileo

i think there might have been one or two more new songs in there........but i
am not sure. afterwards they came out and signed autographs and chatted for a
while - someone asked emily somethign about being vegetarian - to which she
replied, "i am not a vegetarian, never have been...but i could tell you a lot
about some of the issues for vegetarians...but no, i am not one." - for some
reason i thought when they were featured a long time ago on vh1's naked cafe, i
could have sworn she talked about being vegetarian, but i guess it was amy.
so for any of ya'll wondering....now ya know.

ok... i think that is it..... sad...now its back to work as usual....
peace
sasha

i never post pics online (cause i dont have a digital camera - but when i got

it works......there are only about 5-6 pictures.....i had a lot more from

i don't think clearchannel is intending to sell additional tickets to this
rescheduled show (unless they move the show to a larger venue), as it was
sold out the first time around.  what may happen, however, is those tickets
that are returned for a refund might be available for purchase on the day of
the show.
