just got to work after 3 hours sleep after the dancing in the district show last night.  it was a kind of a short set due to festival type situation but worth it to see the girls this tour.  a short review:
first off, emily is uberskinny - she's the size she was on the inside of the 1200 curfews sleeve (opposite blurry amy jumping in the air).  she wore black flared jeans with an wnba tshirt and what looked like one of amy's vintage shirts over it - amy in black tank top and those plaid paints she's been wearing this tour (i bet those things are awfully smelly by now).  they were not overly talkative and didn't do an encore both probably due to the time constraints.  the stage was in the parking lot of titans coliseum with downtown nashville behind them.  i managed to sneak up to the front of the barricade emily's side before they started (yeah!).  it was crazy hot and humid and the bugs were everywhere.  emily said after the first couple of songs "what a nice dry cool evening here in nashville."  the new stuff is incredible, especially emily's stuff, omg - the lyrics are amazing to free in you and the other one played, something about "the greatest gift of life is to know love," - great stuff.  the setlist:
shame on you
gotm
become you
perfect world, new amy song, emily on banjo (thought she was over that instrument since it didn't make an appearance on by - yeah!!)
hammer & a nail
yield
free in you, new emily love song, very sweet
land of canaan
watershed
dairy queen, emily on mandolin, which was wierd at first but she's really good (as if she were gonna be bad or something!), amy plays guitar and makes it sound more like lucystoners or soy with the muted strings cadence thing she does, not sure how i like the song now
deconstruction
johnny rottentail, hadn't seen amy do this in a while, scweeeeet
ctf
other new emily song, just emily on guitar and amy barely sings, beautiful song, lots of great imagery, very positive uplifting stuff
chickenman/bitterroot (emily is such a badass!)
galileo

so that's about all i have.  they were both very smiley and again emily looks great.  as someone else had mentioned, amy was really dancing around a lot like in the old days - very fun to watch.  a very good show - i can't wait to hear the album - i hope they don't polish it up too much and make it all overproduced.

have a great weekend y'all and if you can make it to the remaining shows definitely try, you'll be glad you did!

peace,
joey

i don't get bravo, but all my (non-homophobic) friends think it's
extremely funny, and politically harmless. i wouldn't worry about it.

anyway, there are much bigger things to worry about! :)

i think the show is pretty brilliant.  i haven't seen the watered-down nbc
episodes, but the full-length episodes on bravo (?) are just great!

i recently read an interview somewhere with one of the hosts of the show and
the interviewer asked him if he thought the show perpetuated gay stereotypes
and he replied that if it is a stereotype that gay men dress well and
furnish their homes well, then that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, so be
it!

i personally love this show because it's hilarious,
but also a little bit heartwarming. i'm sure there are
those who believe it perpetuates stereotypes of gay
men, and certainly to some extent it does. it's a
comedy. the makeover doesn't just seek to make the
straight man fashionable; the "fab 5" want to make the
men comfortable and confident. each makeover is
different because each person has their own
personality; the fab 5 really make each person closer
to their true self.

one of the best parts of the show is seeing
non-homophobic straight men interact with gay men and
feel embarassed for enjoying "non-masculine" spa
activites and having gay men flirt with them. the show
succeeds because it's about individuals, relationships
and in the cheesy-oprah sense, getting more in touch
with oneself through personal style to become more
confident.

i recommend it to all. you'll spend most of the show
laughing, but by the end, my guess is you'll be
touched and sometimes a little teary-eyed.

:-)carrie

i haven't seen it either, but my mom loves it and she is ok about my sexual
orientation, but not overly thrilled with it either. the cool thing is that
a lot of my my friends who would sorta be homophobic or uncomfortable, i
can bring it up as a joke, get a laugh and seems to break down
defensiveness pretty quickly.

and hell, it does make for some pretty good positive gay jokes. if you
believe in such things (ex. people dont believe there are funny disability
jokes, au contrare, disability jokes are the funniest, cus if you cant
laugh at it, it would be way too depressing...)

i completely agree with carrie.  i love this show and watch it on bravo
every chance i get.  my husband and i really enjoy it.  and for a lot of the
reasons carrie listed.  it is so funny, and it is great to see how they
really try to work with the guys to make them better versions of themselves.
the episode that was on wednesday night was priceless.  the straight guy and
one of the fab 5 (kyan i think) were in just their underwear getting spray
on tans.  it was so hilarious!  you definitely need to see that episode.
it's with a bald guy, can't remember his name though.
anyway, i think the show is great and doesn't portray gay guys in anything
but a positive manner.

i love this show.  i'm not too fond of boy meets boy that follows
though.  maybe because there were straight guys on the show
posing as gay men.  i have seen the previews for this coming
week's show and andra is really ticked off and i don't blame her.  i
think it is a cruel thing to do to someone.  what if he really fell for
one of the straight guys and then has his heart broken because of
it?  i'm sure if the bachelor (or any of the straight shows) would
never think to put lesbians posing as straight chicks in the mix.  it
would be an outrage.  of course they can only do this premise once
since now we all know that boy meets boy has straight guys in it.  i
suppose if they do future runs the trick will be trying to single out
the straight guys first.  <sigh>  i just hope that james doesn't get
too hurt by this.

i absolutely love this show and have watched it on bravo since the first
episode.  one thing to remember though is that it's not just a fashion makeover
show - that's only 1/5 of the show.  here's the breakdown (in case you want to
know):

carson - fashion
kyan - grooming
ted - food & wine
thom - interior design
jai - culture

people who have said that the goal is to make the guys get in touch with
themselves and become better and more confident are exactly right.  the cool
thing (for me) is that the fab 5 actually work with the guy on everything so
that it's not just some stranger coming in and making you over and expecting
you to keep up something you never would have chosen.  they work with their
styles to pick things out that they will like (clothing, grooming habits,
decor, cooking etc.) so that they would be more willing to work harder and
keeping everything up.  and that's awesome.

the simple fact is that there are some gay people that are really good at these
things (obviously - if you watch the show) and i think it's awesome that 1.
these straight guys are open-minded enough to work with the fab 5, and 2. that
the fab 5 are willing and able to use their talents for good stuff like this.

in addition, it's fucking hilarious *grins*  one of my favorites was the first
show - this guy named butch (scheppel or something) that is an artist and
really wanted to re-do his life because he had his first gallery opening.
thome re-did his apartment, and when they all walked in and saw the redone
apartment for the first time, carson said, "oh look!  you put a living room
where the crack den used to be!" *lol*

i would say that everyone should at least give it a chance.  maybe you will
like it, maybe you won't - but i think that enough people have said good things
about it to warrant one episode watch :)

not enough time to do a proper review of the show, they did many new song=
s and=20
the stable of songs that you (unfortunately) hear every show. i wonder ho=
w=20
many people would feel unfulfilled if they didn't play galileo and closer=
to=20
fine????? i suppose if i had to go to an arena show, i would prefer the=20
gwinnett arena. new and more blue-collar appeal than the corporate apeara=
nce=20
of phillips arena.

perhaps better than the ig show on saturday was the atl. harm reduction c=
enter=20
benefit at the red light cafe on sunday. amy played two new songs, or at=20
least ones that i had not heard. one was on the mandolin which she said s=
he=20
wrote in alaska. they held an auction for the opportunity to sing an ig s=
ong=20
accompanied by amy and michelle malone. the guy that won did shame on you=
=2e=20
and i might add that he was a highlight as he was obviously passionate ab=
out=20
the cause. i really dropped the ball on this one as i decided to sit back=
and=20
enjoy the show rather than record it. so if anyone did record i'd like a=20
copy. if i remember correctly they all(kevn kinney, michelle malone, kris=
ten=20
hall and amy) played 4 songs each plus shame on you. so in addition to th=
e 2=20
new ones, she played lucy stoners after which she apologied to kevn. funn=
y!=20
and she also played another solo song maybe late bloom. it was only 4 day=
s=20
ago you'd think that i would remember. anyway, the show closed with the t=
imes=20
they are a changin', with amy accompanying kevn kinney with her mandolin.=
a=20
good show for a cause that is misunderstood.

so, would you feel unfulfilled if they didn't play galileo and closer to=20
fine????? love the songs but would love to hear something  else as a=20
substitute.

i do wish they would stop playing "galileo" at every show; but not as much
as i wish people would stop screaming out requests for it.

many a boot i've recorded has the voice of some concertgoer (i dare not say
"fan," because a fan would know better than to annoy ig with such a request)
yelling "galileoooooooooooooooooooo" at the top of his/her lungs throughout
the show.  it has even gotten to such a point at shows that amy or emily
will say something like, "you can stop yelling out requests for 'galileo.'
we play it at every show."

and if they'd stop playing "closer to fine," perhaps it would prevent the
inevitable stage rush that occurs the minute they bang out the opening bars
to that song.

it's an interesting topic.  i, personally, would love to go to a show and
not hear galileo or ctf.  but that's because i have seen them live so many
times.  but for just the passing fan who may try(not very hard) to get seats
to the shows when they are in their city, i think it is necessary.

the topic came up on a jewel list that i was a member of (until her new cd
which made me want to throw up).  there was a person who had followed her
around to 20 shows in one tour and said how tired he was of hearing her play
you were meant for me and who will save your soul.  he said that he didn't
want her to ever play those in concert again.  but i spoke up as someone who
only sees her when she comes to minneapolis, which is every couple of years.
saying that i look forward to hearing those at the shows.  so, i would be
sad if she didn't play them.

the same can probably be said for non-obsessed ig fans.  i think they would
be saddened if they didn't play galileo or ctf.  maybe they should do a "no
galileo" tour for us hardcore fans.  wouldn't that be awesome?  they could
play the obscure songs!

i totally agree.  dave matthews rarely plays "what would you say" and i've heard pearl jam doesn't do "jeremy" any longer.  while the girls were at it they could stop playing get out the map, least complicated and kid fears - i wouldn't mind - but i'm sure some of you would.  so as diehards, give the newbies a happy nod and reassure the person behind you screaming for galileo to calm down, that they will play it.  sing along during that last verse of closer to fine and adore the smiles on a&e's faces.  continue to hope for the little bits of bliss that you might receive from new material or an old classic.  'cuz they're always gonna play those two songs.
peace,

kidfears????

blasphemy - thatt song is literally the indication of how good good a show
is - it is almost like ghost - least complicated and get out the map i will
give you - and power of 2 - but kid fears? that song is a completely
different emotional level - i dunno - that song has made shows so much the
better - the fans doing stipes part....the possibility of stipe walking out
(i want to see him do it with ig too!) i dunno - kf is a song i never get
tired of...

i was not at the atlanta harm reduction show, but a really good friend called
me long distance in new york and let me hear the entire show...you could tell
that the audience was intense...you could hear a pin drop after the applause
in between songs.  and i have to agree, when david sang shame on you, with amy
(didnt know michelle was in on that one!) it was the highlight of the
evening.

yes, if anyone did tape this show, i would like a copy also...you can't tape
well long distance over a cell phone! lol

what were some of the items up for bid?  i asked on the daemon board, but
didn't really get a lot of info

i know that you die-hard go to as many shows as you can folks
might be getting tired of hearing them sing these "stock songs" but
please realize, that there are those of us who have not been as
priveliged as to get to 1 or more concerts a year.  so when they do
sing gotm, kf, ghost, etc, it thrills us.  i have only gotten to see
the ig's once and although i live in a town that they are more
frequent to visit now (at least every other year or so) i still won't get
to see them as often as i would like.  so, please don't dis these
songs in concert.  i loved hearing them at the show i went to as i
was able to pick up some of the harmonies that i was missing from
cd (not to mention their show improvisational harmonies)!

not all of us are lucky enough to get to see these songs in action so
for us hearing gotm (even though i have it on 3 or maybe 4
different cd's) is a treat.

just a different pov

i agree, i think of the people who are going to their first show, and imagine
not hearing one if not both of those songs, they would be so disappointed, i
know i would have been way back when....and honestly i still love watching the
crowd all singing together, i think it is pretty cool. i also wouldn't be
against a small club tour though, called like "the die hard tour" where you had
to answer a trivia question to get tickets to the shows, only 2 seats per
person, and the girls only played obscure songs like "crazy game"....ahhh what a
dream! i also must say that i wish that when the girls did the tours w/ a full
band they did more "full band songs" and when they are acoustic more acoustic
songs w/ killer harmony. i am dying to hear a rocking version of this train or
bury my heart when they play w/ a band, but i also would rather not hear go
w/o a band.....i don't know, just my opinion!! i still love all there shows and
i think they still kick ass!!!

take care,

janet

i totally agree. i don't particularly care for kid fears on the album, but
there's something extra magical about when in concert the audience just
knows to start singing michael stipe's part at the end.
