of course all the guys next to me said was ...oh my god are they not going to play galileo........aarrrgghh...i yelled at them "of course they are going to play galileo"...

i agree with you, michelle.
'die-hards' aren't only the fans who can get to every single concert--but
also those of us who've loved the ig for years and years!  i was given my
first 'tape' of the ig when i was twelve years old and i've loved them ever
since (i'm 29 now).  sadly for me, i've only been able to see three concerts
during my seventeen years of being a faithful listener.....does that make me
less of a fan?  i can sing every single song out loud, by heart, and when
i'm lucky enought to get to a concert, i'm happy to hear anything that amy
and emily are singing! gotm, ctf, galileo......they're awesome songs, as are
the new ones, but can't we hear em all and be happy about it?

i know that you die-hard go to as many shows as you can folks
might be getting tired of hearing them sing these "stock songs" but
please realize, that there are those of us who have not been as
priveliged as to get to 1 or more concerts a year.  so when they do
sing gotm, kf, ghost, etc, it thrills us.  i have only gotten to see
the ig's once and although i live in a town that they are more
frequent to visit now (at least every other year or so) i still won't get
to see them as often as i would like.  so, please don't dis these
songs in concert.  i loved hearing them at the show i went to as i
was able to pick up some of the harmonies that i was missing from
cd (not to mention their show improvisational harmonies)!

not all of us are lucky enough to get to see these songs in action so
for us hearing gotm (even though i have it on 3 or maybe 4
different cd's) is a treat.

just a different pov

me, i was just happy that they didn't play chickenman at folks fest a few
weeks back.  i'd pick ctf and galileo over chickenman, any time.

as for the crowd rushing during ctf, it's a-ok by me.  if i'm in the front
row, i figure i've got the best starting point in the house.  if i'm not, it
gives me a chance to get there!

i would love a "b-sides" tour. i think i posted this a few years ago but i
have a cute story about a song the girls didn't play...in 1997 i took my
sons to their first concert which was the indigo girls. my youngest was 7
years old and his favorite song was "power of two" he waited in great
anticipation to hear them play it and when they didn't he was inconsolable,
crying his eyes out saying "i won't ever go to another concert ever again".
he is now almost 14 years old, still a great indigo girls fan and has
probably been to see them about 12 more times since that first concert. of
course the first time they did play po2 at a concert we were at (probably a
year later), it was me who was sobbing her eyes out, i was so moved and so
proud of my little ig guy!

just to chime in. i've seen them around 30 times and i do believe they have
played ctf, galileo, get out the map and power of 2 at every show, except
the first show i saw which was on the swamp tour. now, the real problem is,
with a 19-22 song setlist, depending on the night and mood of the girls,
emily has around 10 songs to play. 4 are gone right off the bat (above), 3-4
more are going to be from the new record - whatever that may be at the time,
so you get at most 3-5 other songs (and it can go to 5 because amy will
sometimes get robbed at the end of the show and will not get equal time due
to requests, etc.), which will include either wood song or least complicated
99% of the time. sometimes both at the same show if requested, etc. in
addition, she seems to rotate about 5-6 songs in the other category so those
are predictable too. i think this has lead to her sometimes bored or
lackluster performances, but i will give her credit, the aug 03 shows,
especially wolf trap and baltimore (the ones i attended), she was blazing
and full of energy. its the most energized i've seen her in the last 4 years
and i've seen around 7 shows a year since 2000 (5 in 2003 so far).

now, amy has one song she plays at every show. shame on you. now i admit,
chickenman has been a staple recently but its only because most have been
acoustic shows and i know they love the bitterroot piece in the middle and
that is why its played, but even in the aug 03 tour shows, she didn't play
this at every show. kid fears was also mentioned, i'd say at most, this was
played at around 1/2 the shows i've been too. it is not that common as wood
song or least complicated. not even close i'd say. she does have staples she
plays regularly and these change more often then emily's, but she doesn't
play 4 songs at every show. i know its a matter of popularity, but em's
power of 2 and map tunes were not radio or video hits like ctf and galileo
were. she could easily rotate these out every so often and at least on back
to back shows, which would statisfy me as i tend to bunch the shows i see
for that reason (set list changes between nights are usually in the 5-7 song
range, mostly amy tunes).

the new songs do not count in this discussion because they will always play
at least 3-4 each and there will be staples on a particular tour (become you
and collecting you as an example).

i think the idea of a die hard tour is great.

i will say i am grateful they tour at all, and i have a chance to see this
many shows. i shouldn't complain and i'm not really. frankly, if i only saw
one show a year, or two as they frequent the same cities a lot, i'd want
different songs on the second time around. even the ones who do not attend
mulitiple shows on a tour, will attend multiple shows in their city, when
they are 4-5 months apart. that is the real argument. i'd think they'd want
something different and wouldn't be too depressed if they didn't get all 4
of those at both shows. however, this is a logistic nightmare for the girls
as they create the setlist at dinner or before based upon the mood of the
day. however, it could be done even though it won't be. clearly they could
do it at back to back shows in the same city but they have not. oh well.
someday we can only hope emily gets way tired of playing these and just
drops them. it's gotta happen eventually. some bands don't change the set
for the whole tour so it could be worse i guess, although the comparisons
don't line up most times (styles, length of set, etc).

what a ramble eh?

ninjadave.

oh, nah man...chickenman rules.(lol) they do so much with it.

here's my attempt at the lyrics...
where there is ? i'm just not sure........

dee:)

whatever it was
it wasn't ammunition(?)
when we spill the blood
and we pull the weeds
you can bury the past
it's a mausoleum
with the ghost of a fist
won't let us be
do we bring it together
and carve from the mountains
to the valley below
will it get any better
do we tether the hawk
do we tether the dove
i kicked up the dirt
and i said to my neighbor
keep making it worse
keep getting it wrong
he tucked in his shirt
he stood a little bit straighter
we need a few less words
and a few more guns
will it bring us together
can we carve from the mountains
to the valley below
does it get any better
do we tether the hawk
do we tether the dove
i stand with you
all you true believers
with the strength to see this
for what it is
cuz i'm telling you now
they will surely mislead ya
with the hope that bleeds ya
of your will
i see this world
it's battered but not broken
and there's a fellow ....(?).
waitn' on a ....(?)
you can grow what you want
one day it's gonna rise up
so plant what you need
to make a better stand
we can bring it together
we can carve from the mountains
to the valley below
we can make it better
you let go of the hawk
i'll let go of the dove

hear, hear! that nearly ruined the asbury park show for me a few years back.
the chicks next to us in the front row wouldn't stop yelling for it. ig
noticed and commented that they would play galileo, but they wanted to play
some new stuff first because they had a new album (it was cons). the chicks
said something like "we love you anyway." amy looked pissed and said
something back along the lines of "you love us even though we have a new
album and we love you even though you only want to hear galileo." not long
after that, i had to ask them to stop talking during all the ballads.

now, please don't think that what i'm going to say next is comparing tori
amos and the girls. that's not my intention. but i wish more artists did
what tori does with her shows. she plays the same opening and closing
numbers for the whole tour, but almost all the stuff in between and for the
encores changes every night. you have a chance of hearing almost any song of
hers at any show, although it is far more likely you will hear some songs
than others. on a given night, you may not hear a few faves, but you may
hear other faves and possibly get to hear a real rarity. artists like tori,
ig, dave matthews, and others who have a set of devoted fans who go to
several shows on each tour should make all efforts to change the setlist to
reward them.

now, this system also has its advantages for the people who only go to one
or a handful of shows. you may miss hearing "galileo" or "shame on you" but
you may hear other songs you love more or be lucky enough to hear something
really rare or obscure. it makes each show even more special.

i have seen ig 10 times over the 14 years i've been a fan. i love hearing
ctf at each show, but i wouldn't mind it if some other songs did not appear
at each show. i'd really like it if more of each set list was a surprise.
however, the girls are so great if they just stood there and recited the
phone book, it would still be awesome.

cheers,
tom m.
"i will climb the ridge at daybreak,
i will kiss the sky at noon,
raise my yearning voice at midnight
to my mother in the moon."

tom, i have been praying and begging to hear lwcty forever!  during last
year's tour, i saw five shows.  and by the last one (schenectady), i think i may
have yelled it out enough to convince emily to work it up.  she said from stage
that they didn't remember it, but would try to work on it.  true to her word,
they played it for the rest of the tour....after the five shows i got to see!
ugh!

desperate times called for desperate measures this year.  so after my first
(of three) shows in hampton beach, nh, i waited around after for them as they
passed by to get on the bus.  i chatted her up and asked if she "was feeling
lwcty this tour?"  she asked with a chuckle, "why?  are you coming to all the
shows?"  i told her no, not all of them, but i would be at northampton and
hyannis.  she promised she would try to work it up by then.  although i believe she
was sincere, no luck for me on my special request.  in my heart, i believe
that the guy screaming out "virginia woolf!!!) at the calvin theatre may have
caused my song to be ousted from the setlist.  arrgh!!

oh well.  it's nice to have something to hope for in the future when i see
them again.  fingers crossed--gina

p.s.  maybe i should have told her that i teach that song in my public
speaking class, during the chapter on language use.  i use it as an example of
imagery, specifically metaphors.  they always like "my words are paper tigers"
best!

just fyi, they did play this a couple times during the feb 03' dates, and it
was recorded at oberlin oh by me. they actually did "let it be me" and "love
will come...." at oberlin. incredibly emotional night. very charged up.

it's as good as being there (it sounds extremely nice). just crank it. :)

i've begun to request point hope at every show i attend in the hopes its
played. once they learn it on a particular tour, getting them to play it as
a request at any particular show is much easier. i've got a sign and all.
