hey folks,
i noticed in the record store today that there's a new dvd/cd=
bundle,
released as part of sony's "now see hear" range. basically, it's=
"watershed" plus "retrospective" in a cardboard box. i don't=
know if
this is an australia-only thing or global, but anyway, now you=
know.
(meanwhile, you still can't get "become you" over here...)
cheers,

one day our communities will know each other better and fully celebrate our

remember our brothers and our sisters all over the world who suffer from
oppression and we will work to alleviate suffering wherever we find it. we will study

i cannot believe they did "welcome me!!" the last time i saw that one was in
1994. awesome! they should've opened the show with it though, as it is the
best song to start an ig show with.
hope they swing near me soon.

hey everyone!
i'm a little behind in my email.
yeah, without melodies, i missed some lyrics that i actually knew. also, there were some songs that i could recall the melody and remember every word, but the one taken out. like mr. limes (misheard lines, for those not on the last oh, 6 yrs ago, or so)
anyway, i was born in 1976 and scored a pretty pathetic 66.5
my excuse is i did it very quickly and if it didn't come to me instantly i just left it blank.
peace, melissa

ok. not a bad choice. "fugitive" any time would be welcome. with a band, you
can't beat "three hits" as an opener. i like "welcome me" as a solo opener.

i know....i've heard fugitive live in person once.....at my first ig
show.....i'd just recovered
from my first broken ankle (which was a 3-month ordeal counting the time
i spent in therapy after i got my cast off.)
it came out in may of 1994, i was wheelchair bound and staying in house
that was totally
inaccesible to handicapped people, but i decided i would rather recover
in a house with
my family, than in a nursing home. my appartment was three stories up
with no elevator....needless to say but my cat had to
watch me fall, get carried out by paramedics,
and not return for at least 10 weeks!
my cat was looked after. i did not get out much....my sister took me out
to sam goody at the mall of america, and we were driving back and i put
the tape in, and oh..... just couldn't believe it, the bright chords and
melody, and words really matched the sunshine, and my mood!
after getting home, i would put it in my walkman, and spend two hours a
day in our backyard, enjoying the sun,the greenery, and letting my
imagination run wild.... at the time fugitive and touch me fall were my
favorites!
so hearing the girls do it live in july.....i loved how they started it
backstage and walked out just before the first verse. i wish i could see
it live again...i've got it in my meagre ig boot collection.....but it
just isn't the same.

my boyfriend in ma called me and told me the specifics of the law are that
the supreme court only said it was unconstitutional, that nothing in terms
of legislation has been addressed in terms of marriage licences and that
the original plantiffs cannot get their marriage licenses now - it was
kinda funny because it is my birthday, he called when he heard the news,
and i was like - so are you proposing to me? he laughed and said not yet...
oh well - hopefully someday soon

subject: the grove at anaheim - nov. 18, 2003
mime-version: 1.0
content-type: text/plain; format=flowed
hello intimate strangers!
greetings from the west coast, where i now reside and work! my brother mark
and i set off for anaheim around 5 p.m. we took the 5 freeway down to
katella avenue for a night of rocking acoustic folk music with michelle
malone and the indigo girls: amy ray and emily saliers!
the grove is right next to edison field where the anaheim angels play
baseball. for some reason, i was expecting it to be outdoors, but it was a
warehouse-type indoor venue with surprisingly outhouses as well as the
regular bathrooms! but, alas, i digress.
first we ate dinner--a little overpriced for what you get (i.e. $18 for
blackened salmon on rice with diced veggies), but we were famished by the
time we sat down we gobbled up the white bread and butter at our table
before we even met our server.
michelle malone took the stage at 8:30pm and she rocked it with her first
two songs. then slowed it down for the next three, and then, ended up with
a country-folkish, good-time song. (setlist that i can remember: 2 horns
and 2 wings, cypress inn, preacher's daughter, lefayette, avalon) linda b.
did great on background vocals and her drums.
during the break, we saw a bunch of stagehands and then, ta-dah! sulli!
she had the most marilyn monroe shade of blond, bombshell blonde, her hair
almost touching her shoulders. she looked happy, and smiled at the fans in
the "mosh pit".
amy and emily then took the stage to a round of applause and hollering from
the audience. this setlist i did by memory because i left the pen in the
car, so corrections are welcome:
hammer and a nail
reunion
power of two
i don't wanna know (mm)
watershed
ozilline
fill it up again
perfect world
all that we let in
yield
collecting you
heartache
closer to fine (mm)
land of canaan
virginia woolf
chickenman/bitterroot (mm)
ghost
shame on you (mm)
encore:
i cried
galileo
(mm) = michelle malone
amy and emily were happy to be in l.a. once again, so soon after their
september 26th appearance at descanso gardens. they came back for me! (i
was over the pacific ocean flying back from thailand.)
people were requesting various songs again including love will come to you
and older songs. amy was talking to the people upfront, and said about
lwcty, "maybe, we can do that song, oh wait. that's emily's song." emily
looked at her and smiled at the peeps, "i don't know that song very well
right now."
a toy koala bear was handed over to emily and the tag on the ear said, "when
are you coming to australia again?" emily said, "yes, we've been there a
couple of times...but it's such a fucking long flight!" amy said, "yeah, so
we have to find stuff to do, and you can give us stuff like that."
after hearing a few of the new songs, i agree with prior reviewers--the
songs are reminiscent of swamp ophelia with harmonies and lyrics, and
injections of fun in there. i can't wait for the new album: emily said,
"february, probably." it seemed like she also is ready for it to be
released.
highlights for me were hearing the new songs, reunion, watershed, virginia
woolf, and the rousing emily solo on chickenman, michelle on her harmonica;
and listening to power of two with my brother, since he introduced me to the
indigo girls six years ago with that very song--that we also played at our
brother's wedding in august.
thank you amy, emily, michelle, linda, sulli, and crew for coming to so cal!

my partner met amy sunday night outside the fillmore in sf. it was the one
night i didn't go. i gave up my ticket and she went by herself so i could
grade papers. (!) she walked up to her as she got out of her car and was walking
up (by herself!) to go inside before the show. here's how she said it went:
sheryl: is there any chance i could shake your hand?
amy: sure!
sheryl says her own hands were really cold but amy's were "warm and bony."
sheryl: thanks for your music.
amy: sure!
so that was it. we had met emily before but never amy. i'm a longtime fan
so i'm pretty jealous that i was at home grading papers. but to be honest, i'm
glad i could just hear about it. i probably would have fallen down had i
been there.

wendell,
i don't have a clue what i cried is. i just remember the line in the
chorus, and the lyrics to some of amy's new songs aren't posted on lifeblood
yet. the song began with "all the volunteers...."

wow, i'm truly saddened to learn of his passing. he's been a major
figure in music of all kinds, including doing the score to brazil (one
of my favorite films of all time), as well as more recently helping
metallica out with their sojourn with the sf philharmonic. he's going
to be sorely missed!

<!doctype html public "-//w3c//dtd html 4.01 transitional//en">
atlanta, nov. 21--it's the super bowl and final four of theology all wrapped into one, as at least 8,000 religious scholars gather in atlanta on saturday for the nation's top religious conference. the american academy of religion and the society of biblical literature will hold their annual meetings together to focus on the hottest trends in religious scholarship.
for four days, the scholars will present their latest research, honor their best and hold discussions on everything from zen buddhism to the spirituality of "star trek" and "pinocchio."
the conference is so sprawling that organizers printed a 400-page program book to accommodate 500 sessions planned for the meeting. related academic meetings began thursday. "this is the place to go," said barbara deconcini, executive director of the american academy of religion and an emory university professor. "it's the world's largest gathering of scholars of religion, and it happens just once a year."
don saliers, an emory university religion professor, who will present a performance workshop on worship tonight with his daughter, emily saliers, a member of the grammy-winning duo the indigo girls. the conference will also feature behind-the-scenes performances; it offers up-and-coming religious scholars a chance to make a professional splash by presenting innovative papers. kent lee brintnall, an emory university graduate student, who spent six months preparing for his role in a panel discussion titled "america the violent."
brintnall is presenting a paper where he compares the bloody visions of the 14th-century christian mystic julian of norwich with the images in quentin tarantino's film "reservoir dogs." "this is a way for me to get feedback--am i just crazy or is this something worth exploring--but it's also a way in which i can create an audience for my work," brintnall said.
reputations are made and sometimes lost at the conference, brintnall said. "if someone presented really bad scholarship and they tried to make some historical claim that they had no evidence for, they would set themselves up as being a shoddy scholar," brintnall said.
at least 150 book publishers attending the conference will also look for a way to raise their visibility. they will go on a talent search, looking for the most promising scholars or research that might be turned into a book. often, they don't have to search. religious scholars routinely stop by their booths to pitch book proposals during the conference. "this is the only religious conference that we personally attend," said heather boyle, a spokeswoman for peter lang publishing, based in new york city. "the organization sends us a program, and from that we know the types of things that people are interested in."
most of the events, however, are not open to the public, unless you're willing to pay a $330 registration fee for the entire four-day conference or $150 for one day.
