  indigo girls extend tour
updated 02:39 pst wed, jan 15 2003
the indigo girls are back for another round of shows in support of their
eighth album, become you. joining the girls on the tour are kim richey
(february 1-4 and 7-10), neko case (february 6), cordero (february 11-17), and
paul melangon (february 18-19).
the outing will be an acoustic venture, with the indigo girls' backing band
left home. however, that doesn't mean the supporting artists will be
unplugged. latin band cordero will bring their fusion of latin rhythms and
southern gothic stories alongside the country crooning of kim richey and pop
leanings of paul melangon.
although his name may be new to most, paul melangon is no stranger to diehard
indigo girls fans. he's currently opening for amy ray & the butchies.
the girls managed to make it onto pollstar's top 100 tours of 2002. they
nabbed the no. 76 spot, just behind guns n' roses and ahead of tim mcgraw,
although the indigo girls packed in more than five times the number of gigs
than either of those two.
earlier last year, the indigo girls celebrated the then-pending release of
become you with a club tour previewing the new material from february through
march. they followed that by hitting europe full-blast in april before heading
back to the states for a tour that spread into fall.

a true southern girl
indigo girl amy ray plays some southern rock'n'roll on solo album

by julie phillips jordan
jphillips@onlineathens.com

"i love georgia," says amy ray, one-half of the indigo girls, the
powerful folk-rock duo that has made a significant impact on pop
consciousness with their soulful songs and heartfelt lyrics.

she's talking by phone from her georgia home, which is about the same
distance from athens as it is atlanta, as she reveals later in the
conversation. she declares her love for the south in the midst of a
discussion about music in general, about how her debut album "stag"
(released in march, 2001) features some fellow georgia rockers, and
certainly a nice list of southern musicians to back her, among them
atlanta's rock*a*teens, south carolina singer/songwriter danielle
howle, north carolina's the butchies and birmingham-based 1945.

"the way that southern writers are, the images are very specific to
the south," she says. "they're very dark. and they're not secular --
most of the images are more spiritual. when you look at
(rock*a*teens' chris) lopez's writing, he has a lot of biblical
references, and danielle (howle), too. they're very epic in their
proportions."

the same definitely can be said about ray's songwriting. the indigo
girls' lyrics (also written by bandmate emily saliers) consistently
tell character-driven stories of good and evil, love and beauty,
despair and discovery, modern-day fables with an historic
sensibility.

and "stag," released on ray's own daemon records label, does as well,
most evident in the opening track, "johnny rottentail," a
mandolin-fueled hellfire-and-damnation ballad about a brother who was
hanged from the gallows for his evil ways: "oh yes i loved him but i
won't miss him/ as he's burning and he's twisting/ for his heartless
dedication/ to the devil and its creed."

where that song's a playful (if ironic) tribute to southern folk
music, "laramie" takes up a serious issue in its contemplative plea
against hate crime, specifically gay-bashing. the song was written in
response to the murder of matthew shepard -- and it's a theme that
hitches a ride with feminism to carry over into the more rockin'
"lucystoners": "and all the faggot bashing poetry, but the boys are
just saying/'love me please'/in every hate filled phrase..."

though ray will soon go back into the recording studio to begin work
on a new indigo girls album, "stag" is altogether ray's, a little
more rockin' and edgy. she put it together in an almost scrappy
do-it-yourself style that saw her traveling up and down the east
coast, putting down tracks in basements and recording studios alike
(in new york she met up with joan jett, who lends her signature
vocals to "hey castrator").

ray then came back to georgia -- athens, specifically -- where she
put the songs in the hands of athens musician and engineer david
barbe at his chase park transduction studio.

"i like his sensibilities ..." ray says of barbe. "he's really good
with guitar tone. and he can make your electric guitar sound just the
way you want it to sound ..." she says, adding he was able to make
"everything sound old and grungy" just the way she wanted it to.

the other draw of athens, though, is it's sort of a roots place for
ray, as she and saliers began their career here as the indigo girls,
making the trek from atlanta to play their tunes for athens
audiences.

"the atlanta/athens thing is so funny because atlanta bands are
always just struggling to get gigs in athens. and back then it was
the same way. to get in the door, you had to open for somebody that
was already established, and so the squalls let us play with them
and drivin' 'n' cryin' did too. ... and we worked in athens on our
first couple of records, with john keane. we ate at the taco stand
all the time, and now i'll drive to athens just to go eat at the
grit. i love athens. and david barbe, he's real important to me as an
engineer and a producer. but back then, it was just this situation
where if you were an atlanta band and you could get your gigs in
athens, you sorta felt like you had accomplished something."

this will be the first show ray's played in athens in a long while.
although "stag" was released nearly two years ago, ray says this tour
is an opportunity for her to reconnect with the butchies (who toured
with her last year), as she plans to work with them on a future solo
album. "and athens," she adds, "was one of the places that we really
wanted to play -- the 40 watt."
