she actually said "i know.... you don't spend an hour on the page, you spend an
hour on the stage... i must be channeling that hateful writer" (the one who'd
writen the "virginia woolf makes me want to vomit" column.) the intro to the
song was really funny, too - emily opened by quoting the article title. then
she
and amy talked a little about how they hadn't sung this in awhile, and they
certainly hadn't practiced it... and then emily flung her hands out to either
side and said "but whatever. you can take over for us."

now that i now pooh has a boot (yay!) i won't take a stab at the setlist, but i
do know that they played devotion and hope alone, neither of which i had never
heard live before, and dairy queen, which gets better every time i hear it.
they
also played least complicated, which i was pleased about because it's my
favorite sing-along and they so often skip it these days.

notable omissions: moment of forgiveness and our deliverance. i like both those
songs a lot, but i've almost started to feel that they are a waste of a spot in
the setlist (od much more than mof) so i was pleased.

[...]

oh, and chickenman rocked. emily took a big ol' bluesy solo in the middle, and
then they did all of bitterroot just before the "i went looking" part (i'd
never
seen them do a big guitar break ad bitterroot in the same performance).

mandy

milwaukee was amazing!!! they were both really talkative. sample conversation:
emily said that she came to wisconsin to see the packers with connie or kim
from mrs fun. she said she was freezing and it was the high light of her
life. she then said, sorry atlanta kicked your asses this year. the audience
boo-d. amy said, oh that's good emily, you really know how to win them over.
emily said are they boo-ing? amy said, no they're calling for bruce (meaning
springsteen i would guess) she then looked around as if to try to find bruce.
amy also said, when people requested galileo, that they would do that later
but if they did it fifteen times (perhaps meanign every tiem someone called
for it) that would bekind of a drag. she then apologized to emily and said
something like, no offense. emily seemed to think it was funny.
amy's guitar or rather the chord of her guitar was having issues and a few
lines into reunion she stopped and said she had forgotten the words because
she was thinking about what might be wrong with her guitar.
amy looked very nice in a thin orange shirt with a sort of seventies collar.
same belt as last night in chicago. emily wore clothing also. (oops, my bias
is showing) no actually, emily wore a black slogan shirt w/ a black
over-shirt and jeans.
great set list. she's saving me, moment of forgiveness, dairy queen (although
i'm still not sure if i really liek this one), devotion, land of canaan,
finlandia (!!!) were some highlights.  the set list said kid fears, but they
conferred right before the encore and changed to finlandia. (sp?)
they said that they were worried about coming back to milwaukee so soon after
summer fest and were really happy that we still wanted to see them. amy said
she's been trying to study new song writing techniques and that that caused
her to forget  the "and there's always retrospect" line in watershed. she
said, she knew retrospect was involved somehow, but that she couldn't
remember how. she said soemthing about trying to write phonetically and to
jot down words that remind her of different things or soemhting and that all
of these techniques were causing her to forget the words to her own songs.
