i have often bought my cds (by post) from an independent record shop in
scunthorpe called record village. i asked them when they might be able to
get the new cd and how much would they be charging. i heard back today that
they will have the cd in on the 13th feb and will post it to me that day.

the other bit of news, that i hadnt heard elsewhere (maybe that was just
me??) is that there is a limited edition cd being produced which will
include a bonus 6 track live dvd -  and the price? well i was quoted £10.99
including p+p. i think amazon is £14.99.

here are the contact details:

http://www.recordvillage.co.uk

recordvillage@btconnect.com

phone 01724-851048

i think they will be ordering soon.

hannah

ps - can anyone tell me how to change my subscription details on these 2
lists? i have changed my email address recently and will be giving this one
up soon. tia

just heard the entrance to "hammer and a nail" as filler music between stories
on mpr's marketplace.  :)

didn't have anything to do with the girls, but my guess is that something in the
previous story was relevant to the song.  i wasn't paying close enough
attention, unfortunately, and i didn't catch what that was.  i've noticed that
the marketplace music directors are very good at picking slightly obscure songs
that fit the stories they run in some way or another.

region free and ntsc are two different beasts. if you have a region free
disc that's encoded in pal you still won't be able to watch it if your
player only plays ntsc. they should work just peachy on your puter though.

just an extra something to watch out for...

mime-version: 1.0

christopher curtis, gay.com / planetout.com network
thursday, january 22, 2004 / 05:40 pm

the conservative american family association (afa) said it will not take the
results of its marriage poll to capitol hill after a majority of respondents
favored same-sex marriage, according to a thursday report in wired news.
the afa posted the poll online in december with a stated intention to forward
the results to congress as evidence of u.s. opposition to same-sex marriage.
respondents could select one of these three choices:
"i favor legalization of homosexual marriage."
"i favor a 'civil union' with the full benefits of marriage except for the
name."
"i oppose legalization of homosexual marriage and 'civil unions.'"
but as of press time, the numbers support same-sex unions: sixty percent
favored same-sex marriage and 8 percent favored civil unions, leaving just 32
percent opposed.
afa representative buddy smith complained to wired news: "it just so happens
that homosexual activist groups around the country got a hold of the poll --
it was forwarded to them -- and they decided to have a little fun, and turn
their organizations around the country (on to) the poll to try to cause it to
represent something other than what we wanted it to. and so far, they succeeded
with that."
matt foreman, the executive director of the national gay and lesbian
taskforce was dumbfounded. "the abject hypocrisy of these people never ceases to amaze
me," he exclaimed.
"they constantly manipulate facts, and when things don't work out as they
want, they run to mama and whine."
on jan. 6, the gay.com/planetout.com network discussed the afa poll with
expert bob witeck, who said that since it was not a scientific survey, its results
could not be considered meaningful data. according to witeck, legitimate
polls show support for gay marriage somewhere between 40 to 50 percent -- and
growing.

well, i've been fortunate to have listened to all that we let in all
the way through for a couple of days now. thought i would post a
review.   (please, don't ask me for a copy, i'd love to but i can't.)

some general thoughts:  i've been calling this album become you 2:
electric boogaloo.  if you liked by, i think you'll like this one.
if you didn't, then=8amaybe you won't.  the instrumentation and
production are very, very, very similar.  but you never know.

when i first heard by, i hated, hated, hated it=8abecause i had become
accustomed to the live acoustic versions.  after a while, though, i
realized i really wasn't being fair about it.  amy and emily have
every right to want to create and sculpt these songs the way they
want to, and i think it's natural for them to want to do them with a
full band.  all we hear, though, are the acoustic versions, which
obviously have to be different because there's only two of them.
when i listen to these songs, although it's hard, i try to imagine,
"what if i was hearing these songs for the first time, without
preconceived notions of acoustic versions?"  and that's not easy but
that's what i'm going to try and judge them on.

that being said, i'm sure i'll do a little bit of comparison between
the two - i'm only human.  :)  here's a song-by-song play:

1. fill it up again - like most of these songs on atwli, the
keyboards are prominently featured.    however, it really works on
this song.  and the drums are fantastic.  they kinda play a
double-time beat during the verses and cut it in half during the
choruses.  as with by, there are too many overdubbed voices.  but
this song should have been the single.  it's really catchy and just
sounds great.  a great opening to the cd!

2. heartache for everyone - ever wonder what ig would sound like if
they became a ska band?  well, that's what happens here, without the
horns.  stop hyperventilating, it's not that bad.  the bass line is
very active with, again, lots of organ (hammond b3?).  the whole song
works very well in this format except for an extremely cheesy,
casio-sounding, one-note 80s keyboard solo after the bridge.  the
solo happens, then they repeat the bridge ("hey valentine=8a") and then
they do the last verse.  i think it's probably one of the first ig
songs you can really dance to.  it's a lot of fun.

3. free in you - well, it's another one of those emily songs.
laid-back, pop-country feel, nice harmonies, with schmaltzy lyrics.
it's very nice but it's not groundbreaking.  it sounds like many of
her older songs: collecting you, hope alone, leaving=8ait'll be one of
those ones that i sing along with and i'm halfway through before i
figure out which song i'm singing.

4. perfect world - when i first heard this last month, i didn't like
it.  i feel differently now.  (surprise!)  i really like it now.  no
point in describing it since everyone's heard it.

5. all that we let in - as i posted on another board, i was so scared
to hear this studio version.  i was worried that there were going to
be drums somewhere on this.  thank god there are no drums.  here's
where i get weak and maintain that this song needed nothing but emily
on guitar.  the other instruments aren't too intrusive, though, other
than the piano arpeggios during the choruses.  (why!?!?  why
distract?!?)  the bass line is very pretty though, and there's a
great violin part before the last verse.  and they very respectfully
keep the final verse quiet, although with piano instead of guitar
(what's wrong with guitar?).  i still hate the line "and the greatest
gift of life is to know love," and the fact that she tries to rhyme
it with "stove."  ugh!

6. tether - the keyboard doesn't bother me.  i think the song rocks
in old-school neil young style.  this is really the only rockin' song
on the album.

7. come on home - sounds like free in you, which sounds like hope
alone, which sounds like=8avery nice, emily, but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz=8a.

8. dairy queen - it's starkville two!  i like it as much as i like
starkville, which is a bunch.  this has some electric guitar but it's
lower in the mix than the mandolin.  oh, and no harmonica, which is
kind of a bummer.  it's been replaced with=8acan you guess?
(accordion.)

9. something real - it's a song we haven't heard in concert!  yay!  i
can judge it on it's own!  :)  a mid-tempo emily song.  not exactly
that much different from the other typical emily songs, but it does
feature more acoustic guitar this time than piano, at least during
the first few verses.  the choruses and the lead-out afterwards are a
little overproduced but nothing surprises me anymore.

10. cordova - no guitar-type instruments on this one.  a little bit
of piano, but mainly a haunting organ track behind it.  i know this
one is going to upset people (because it doesn't sound like the live
version).  but i think it's beautiful.  amy's voice is amazing.
really beautiful.

11. rise up - finally we get a different-sounding emily song!  it's
more uptempo, with a nice chorus: "rise up your dead, there's life in
the old girl yet."  a kick-ass bridge leading into a great emily
acoustic guitar solo.  a nice closing.

all in all, it's a fine ig album, but it's not groundbreaking, and it
doesn't take any risks.  nor does it really sound like an acoustic
album, although to be fair, they haven't one that sounded like an
acoustic album since swamp ophelia.  so far it isn't my favorite, nor
is it my least favorite.  it's a good album.

ig need to get a different producer and a different band.  i think
the drums are still very good, similar to jerry's work to me,
actually, and the whole band is good, but given that i think this
album sounds very, very similar to become you, they need to do
something different.  i think that the move to an indie label will
help.

again, these are just my opinions, and they are bound to change in
the weeks to come.

i long ago noticed a "pattern" with ig's album releases.  correct me if
i'm wrong, but don't they seem to work in two-album cycles, with the
same general mood/feel for each cycle, usually followed by some kind of
shift in production/style/etc for the next two?

the groupings are thus:

indigo girls/nomads-indians-saints
rites of passage/swamp ophelia
shaming of the sun/come on now social
and now...
become you/all that we let in

i'm leaving out strange fire, mostly for reasons of being a previous
release that was re-released later.

i've noticed this pattern with other groups, too.  mainly rush
(remember them?), only they work in a 4-album cycle with a live album
coming at the end of each group of four.

but then, looking back at ig's catalog, i note that they have done a
"special release" after each pair of albums.  back on the bus, y'all,
1200 curfews, and retrospective, each came after a pairing of albums.

frankly, i'm thrilled that they're back with their producer from swamp
ophelia.  while it's difficult to pick favorites from the canon, i'd
have to choose the rop/so pair as my favorite of theirs thus far.

truly there is no contest. so maybe it's not the producer that's the
problem, but the band. i don't think they come anywhere close to the halcyon
days of jerry marotta and sara lee.

you hit it right on the nose, graham.  i noticed the pattern of live or
compilation albums after two or three studio albums and also the video or
dvd that comes out every so often as well.  i wonder if that is a
epic-driven pattern, or the indigo girls--maybe it's fan-driven.

i figured these out a month or so ago when the single first came out,
but i forgot to post them. i'm not super-positive on the dmaj7 - i
know that amy's singing a note in the dmaj7 family, though.  and i
suppose the em7 could possibly be em.   feel free to make any
corrections.  i didn't bother typing out all the lyrics because...i
don't know them.  :)

jason

"perfect world" guitar chords

verses go like this:
d              dmaj7
we get to be
em7                   g
  a ripple in the water
d                dmaj7
we get to be
em7                   g
a rock that's thrown
d              dmaj7
we get to be
em7         dmaj7
a boy on the bridge
d           dmaj7       em7    g
standing over the reservoir

etc.

chorus:

d
we are floating
cadd9
we are swimming
g
and at this moment
we are forgetting
d
what it costs
cadd9
what it takes
g
for one perfect world
when we look the other way

em7
it's one
a            d
perfect world
d7
when we look the other way
em7
it's one
a            d
perfect world
d7
when we look the other way
em7
it's one
a            d    dmaj7   em7    g
perfect world

and so on.

dmaj7 = 00222
em7 = 022033
cadd9 = 023033

i forgot to add two things to my review pertaining to "rise up,"
which really is wonderful.

first off, joan osborne lends a lot of soul to this song.

second off, and this is bound to make some of you smile - the bridge
goes something like this (not sure on the first line):

"and if you need to read your mindless mag
call me up for tickets
we'll go see sugarland"

woo-hoo! a columbus show has been added :) definitely have to get up
there for that!  (that'll be two weekends of ig this march... we're already
headed down to atl for the ballet).

my question is, does anyone know if there's a presale for this show, and
if so, the password for it? how does one find out what the password is for
any particular show? i've often wondered, (usually the shows that have
presales/passwords haven't been in my area, so it hasn't been a major concern).  i'd
sort of like to know, though...  seems like more and more shows are having these
presale things, so i figured i should catch up with the times.

ask around your area (co-workers, random people at the dry cleaners,
friends) and see who gets the best reception, without the
bleeps/interruptions, etc.

when i started, i went with cingular because they offered me the best deal
for what i needed ($33/month for nationwide 100 minutes).  i'm not a talker,
and used the phone to answer pages, and just short calls.

my boyfriend wanted to try nextel, because of the nationwide direct
connect(walkie-talkie).  i have occasionally bad connection with nextel
since i live near a hillside.  i'm paying (including the extra charges with
tax) $48/month (advertised as the 35.99, plus $1 for voicemail, $1 for
caller id).  this is for 300 national minutes (no roaming charges).  but
when i went skiing a couple weekends ago, my nextel had service in the
mountains (better than at&t and cingular).

i got a good deal (nextel) on amazon.com (rebates for my phone $150, and
first month free).

1. decide on your budget.
2. see what gets good reception where you live.
3. decide on whether you will be doing mostly local calls, or regional,
and/or national.
4. how many minutes do you really need?

my cousin loves verizon.

good luck!

diane

visit your local newsstand and pick up the latest issue of consumer
reports magazine, which just so happens to have cellular phone deals as
its cover story this month.

i've read cr for years, and find it to be a wonderful source of sane,
helpful, and explanatory information about all kinds of things.  i
haven't looked at this cell phone issue yet, but i'm positive it will
illuminate all the darker corners of the process and help you make a
decision that's just right for you!

you know, that's a good idea!  all the emails so far had different cell phones, and then my hlusemate uses t-mobile which wasn't named by anyone here.  i guess it all comes down to how you use a phone that will decide which is best for you?  anyway, i will check out the cr magazine...fine, first i am addicted to the computer, now i will add cell phone to the list!

i have a similar verizon plan, except it's with my partner, so we have a
sort of "family" plan. more money and minutes for the combined package.
i'd also suggest you solicit opinions on range/connections, etc., and
in that regard, i think verizon is excellent. in postings in post-falcon ridge
folk festival days, there were virtually no complaints about verizon calls
getting through from throughout the grounds -- only in the low, merch area did
my signal disappear -- while folks with other plans (cingular, t-mobile, among
them) complained that unless they were high on the hillside, they got no
signal.

here's an easier url to use:

http://tinyurl.com/2c5b6

also, from the web site:

order now and get your free indigo girls autographed booklet.
1 booklet per transaction. while supplies last.

if you order 2 cds and type in shipfree25 for the code, you
get 2 cds with the bonus dvd, but only 1 booklet.

we're probably taxing their server (!) so be a little patient.

i am also concerned about the dvd.  i sent an e-mail to their customer
service department about it.  i don't care too much about the autographed
booklet because i can always get their autographs later.  but i really
wanted the dvd.  did anyone's order mention the dvd?

you all remember their last album - there were two or three different
"bonus" cds, depending on where you bought it.

same for amy's solo record, there was the 7", the bonus cd and the signed
cd.

wouldn't be surprised if that happens again. i wonder if it really worked
and people still have multiple copies...

i think the "limited edition" is supposed to imply that the dvd is included
... that is how it is being sold on other sites as well.  the booklet is an
extra and that's why it is itemized separately.

they still mention the $18.95 (is it?) price along with the $12.00
one.......does anyone know if  the $18.00 one is still for the dvd
version? i was thinking about going for the $18 one but if it's just for
an autograph i'm not sure.....i like autographs but i'd really like the
dvd...so much that if i can't get it right now, i'mwilling to wait until
it shows up on ebay.....i'm sure it will eventually.

victoria is correct.  i e-mailed sony about it, and got this response:

the dvd is a part of your selection. it is inside the same case as the cd.

thanks
amy

so i would gather that all of these "special edition" cd's have the dvd with
them.  the autograph was extra.
i can't wait to get mine!

another thing that i always consider is, what kinds of causes/groups does
each company contribute large amounts of money to?  for instance, i read
somewhere recently, (i've thrown out the article... sorry), that sprint and verizon
both are heavy contributors to the republican national commitee, and that at&t
was a better company to go with if this idea didn't sit well with you, (which
made me happy, since i'm already a satisfied at&t customer, having dumped
verizon a few years ago because of unsatisfactory service). now, i'm really not
trying to bring up a whole political debate or anything, so let's not get into
that... i'm just saying that, along with looking at who has the best deal, and
who gives you the best range, connection, etc., we should all make an effort to
look at where our money is ultimately going, (in general, not just concerning
cellular plans).
