"to receive one free game piece and a copy of official rules, while

one free game piece per request per stamped outer envelope. pepsi-cola
company (sponsor) assumes no liability for lost, late, stolen, illegible,
misdirected, mutilated, incomplete or postage-due mail or requests."
i assume the 1 in 3 win ratio is applicable to that too? if so, each
winning piece would cost an average of 37 cents times 6 = $2.22 (plus your
time and effort, plus a couple cents for your 2 envelopes per request,
whatever gas you expend getting to the po to buy stamps...) and there's no
guarantee you'll be lucky enough to hit the ratio exactly. you could send
in a bunch of requests and get squat.
again, a download from itunes is 99 cents.

itunes is available for windows now... unless you're running linux/unix
as your main os, you shouldn't have any problems downloading it for
either windows or mac. ipods are not required for itunes.

i don't believe any of those tapes were sold by the indigo girls at some point
in time, and if they were, i doubt they'd be auctioned off in a a lot starting
at $12. my guess is that it's a fan who got them through trading bootlegs
and is now clearing out their collection. i don't know if anything can be
done.

if you're itunes-less, you won't be able to listen to the download (or download it at all). as i mentioned before, any download from itunes has copyright protection built in so only three registered users (with itunes) can listen to it.
there are obviously workarounds, but legally, that's the way it works.

anyway, i finished the first tape of the l-word episodes. those of you who have already e-mailed me know what to do, so i'll look for your tapes in the mail and/or you do the same from me.
anyone still interested in getting copy of the first batch of episodes from this new shotime series, email me privately for details.

the sales rank on amazon.com for the new album is 20. according to them, the lower the number the higher the sales. when you factor in the huge amount of stuff that site sells, a sales rank of 20 is pretty amazing.

jan 26, 2004
i just got back from birmingham, alabama. it's a foggy winter day down
south. i saw
the big sign on 1-20 documenting the number of highway accidents in the
last year
and i'm thinking about the hours logged on this road by my musical
comrades and
the ones still willing to ride the highways for a place to play.
i have been visiting with my good friends that hail from the band 1945.
what a great
band. katharine mcelroy is playing bass, singing, and maybe doing more
tidbits.
hunter manasco is playing guitar and singing. will lochamy is drumming.
this
weekend, we laid down the first tracks for my next "solo" record. its
off to a great
start. we worked on two songs - "covered for you" and "put it out for
good".
katharine mcelroy and hunter manasco are doing the engineering - putting
the sound
on tape. we are working on adats - sort of antiquated system at this
point, but its
working for us. we will go to protools next and then back to analog
tape before me
mix. everything is going down live at this point. we are just trying
to get the best
takes and then will go from there. i plan to work with a lot of
different bands and
find the best combination for each song. this ones gonna take the
better part of this
year to complete. i will be doing it between indigo stuff.
daemon is in excellent shape right now. our current releases by utah
phillips and
david rovics are part of a political folk series with our friends at
akpress. you may
have heard of utah through his work with ani difranco. david rovics is
a hard
working activist and you may have seen him at any number of political
events singing
his hard hitting songs. i'm really proud of these two releases and
there will be more
from this political series.
cordero's 2nd record is coming out in march and they will be hitting the
road with the
indigo girls for a march tour. if you haven't seen them yet, you have a
lot to look
forward to. cordero can turn a bad day into a good day, put you right
back in your
beautiful body where you belong.
i am taking to an amazing punk band out of holland called bambix. we
are hoping to
do something together for a u.s. release. i will keep you updated on this.
kristen hall reports that she is still working on her solo record.
meanwhile, her
country band, sugarland, has been in the studio making a record.
daemon will hae a showcase this year at sxsw. the acts are still to be
announced but
i know the date is march 17th or 18th. if you are going to be in austin
please come
support our family of bands. michelle malone will be playing at the
festival as part of
the utne reader showcase.
as far as local bands, i am hearing inspired tales from people who went
to see the
bands, hope for agoldensummer and telegram. i am sure there are
more...so got out
there and discover something new.
i won't go too much into politics, because i am just not there yet. i
am spending
most of my energy trying to learn what is happening right now. i will
say though that
i am amazed that a man like bush is still in office. his newest social
scheme - an
attempt to amend the constitution for the protection of straight
marriage. if that's
not bad enough, he wants to sink our tax dollars into a program to
encourage
straight marriage especially in low income populations. straight or
queer should be
offended by this. it's hard to fight on all fronts at once. when you
have a war still
going on in iraq as well as a global economic and human rights crisis,
each of which
is greatly fueled by this administration, the idea of what to do first
is daunting. so i
am at my drawing board, but trying to step away from it a little each
day and do some
direct action.
i am attaching a few photos from this weekend (see webpage) and lyrics
to one of the
new songs.
thanks,
amy
"put it out for good"
i hear the rock show winding down at the high school
kids out on the sidewalk are waiting for a ride
all the punks and the queers and the freaks and the smokers
feel like they'll be waiting for the rest of their lives
alright i hear what you're saying to me
alright i hear what i just can't do
but i got this spark i got to feed it something
or put it out for good.
the stadium lights are breaking through the bleachers
(i spent all day)pushing tissue roses into chicken wire
(hey s.g.a) i'm an overachiever of the wrong persuasion
(a pep rally kid), a new gender nation of a new desire
alright i hear what you're saying to me
alright i hear what i just can't do
but i got this spark i got to feed it something
or put it out for good
*bridge
rub up against me till it gets inside you
rub up against me till its understood
those are not your friends talking shit about you
we've had it bad, we're gonna make it good
*break
alright i hear what they're saying to me
(rub up against me till its alright)
alright i hear waht they just can't do
(rub up against me till its alright)
but we got this spark, we got to feed it something
(rub up against me and)
let it burn for good, let it burn for good.

i haven't heard jen foster before, so i can't speak to that.
ripley caine and anne heaton are both worth going to see. ripley has the kind
of voice that will get into your blood. anne writes some very poingnant and
sentimental songs, as well as some of the more typical singer/songwriter fair.
in any case, new music is always worth checking out!

in court, aim members are depicted as killers
by monica davey
published: february 5, 2004
apid city, s.d., feb. 4 =e2=80=94 the former companion of a leader in the am=
erican=20
indian movement clutched a single feather as she took the witness stand in a=
=20
federal court here on wednesday and tearfully depicted the movement's leader=
s as=20
murderous.
in a full but silent courtroom, the witness, ka-mook nichols, said leaders o=
f=20
the militant indian civil-rights group known as aim had orchestrated the=20
death of one of its own members, anna mae pictou aquash, nearly three decade=
s ago.=20
and ms. nichols implicated leonard peltier, aim's best-known member, in the=20
earlier killing of two federal agents, crimes for which mr. peltier has been=
=20
sent to prison for life.
mr. peltier, who has always maintained his innocence, has an international=20
following among those who believe he was framed by federal authorities seeki=
ng=20
revenge.
the trial, in its second day, will determine the fate of arlo looking cloud,=
=20
a former low-level aim member charged with killing ms. pictou aquash, anothe=
r=20
aim member. but the testimony here stretched far beyond this case, presentin=
g=20
a sweeping and frightening look at violence and suspicion inside the militan=
t=20
movement that drew national attention to southwest south dakota in the 1970'=
s.
"you would think the american indian movement was on trial," vernon=20
bellecourt, a spokesman for the movement, said angrily from his seat in the=20=
front row=20
of the gallery, which has been full of people who remember those volatile=20
clashes between indians and federal authorities: aim sympathizers, residents=
from=20
the pine ridge reservation where the occupation of wounded knee took place,=20=
and=20
federal agents, now mostly retired.
mr. bellecourt denied all accusations against the movement, and said the=20
latest revelations were merely another effort by the federal authorities to=20=
hide=20
their own wrongdoing. "it's virtually impossible," he said, "for an indian t=
o=20
receive a fair trial in south dakota."
ms. nichols, who had an 18-year relationship and four children with dennis=20
banks, a leader of aim from its earliest days in the late 1960's, told juror=
s=20
how she joined the movement as a high school student living on pine ridge an=
d=20
never confided all she had seen until now because she supported the group's=20
goals =e2=80=94 treaty recognition, self-determination for indians, a return=
to=20
traditional ways.
"at the time i was committed to the movement and i believed in what the=20
movement stood for," said ms. nichols, now 48. "i never talked to anybody ab=
out=20
anything."
but on wednesday, ms. nichols described details of the group's wanderings=20
around the country =e2=80=94 those fleeing the authorities, building bombs a=
nd planning=20
their next moves. she also told how aim leaders worried that their own membe=
rs=20
might be spying for the authorities.
she testified that the leaders, including mr. banks and mr. peltier, strongl=
y=20
suspected ms. pictou aquash, a micmac indian who left canada to join the=20
movement, might be a federal informer. at an aim convention in june 1975, ms=
.=20
nichols said, leaders openly discussed that possibility.=20
mr. peltier once put a gun to ms. pictou aquash's head, ms. nichols=20
testified, and demanded to know if she was a spy. another time, he talked ab=
out giving=20
her truth serum, ms. nichols testified. all this made ms. pictou aquash angr=
y=20
and fearful, she said. "i knew she was scared of dennis and leonard at that=20
point."
months later, on feb. 24, 1976, ms. pictou aquash's decomposing body was=20
found in a ravine on pine ridge. she had been shot in the head, but the=20
authorities said they could not identify her for several weeks. the day the=20=
body was=20
found, however, mr. banks called ms. nichols and said ms. pictou aquash had=20=
been=20
turned up dead, ms. nichols testified.
"from the day he called me, i started believing it was the american indian=20
movement that has something to do with it," she said.
mr. banks, who has been separated from ms. nichols since 1989, was traveling=
=20
and could not be reached for comment on wednesday. but mr. peltier's lawyer,=
=20
barry a. bachrach, said his client considered ms. nichols' testimony utterly=
=20
false.=20
"he has no idea why she's saying this," mr. bachrach said in a phone=20
interview. "anna mae was not afraid of aim or leonard. ka-mook is doing noth=
ing but=20
parroting government testimony."
mr. looking cloud's lawyer, tim rensch, suggested that ms. nichols might be=20
seeking revenge on her former companion, mr. banks, because he had once had=20=
an=20
affair with ms. pictou aquash. he also suggested that she might be in it for=
=20
money =e2=80=94 the government has paid her $42,000, partly for moving expen=
ses to=20
protect her from aim members =e2=80=94 or even planning to write a book.
but on wednesday, ms. nichols said she simply was telling the truth on behal=
f=20
of a dear friend, ms. pictou aquash. one reason, she said, that aim leaders=20
might have feared the possibility of spying so much was that ms. pictou aqua=
sh=20
had witnessed sensitive information.
she said that she had been riding in a motor home with ms. pictou aquash, mr=
.=20
peltier and others one day in 1975 when mr. peltier began boasting about=20
shooting the federal agents at pine ridge.=20
ms. nichols testified that mr. peltier made a gun with his fingers and said=20
that one agent had begged "for his life, but i shot him anyway."=20
mr. peltier, in a federal prison in leavenworth, kan., denies all connection=
=20
to the killings and to any boasting. "why is she doing this?" mr. bachrach=20
said. "leonard is baffled."
the defendant in this trial, mr. looking cloud, seemed almost an afterthough=
t=20
on wednesday. in opening statements, his lawyer, mr. rensch, acknowledged=20
that mr. looking cloud had been there with other aim members when ms. pictou=
=20
aquash was killed, but that he had not participated or known what was coming=
.=20
wearing glasses, with a braid running down his back, mr. looking cloud, 50,=20
looked small and hunched at the defense table. his lawyer said he quit aim=20
after what happened to ms. pictou aquash, and wound up drinking too much, li=
ving=20
on the streets of denver.

anne heaton is truly amazing. i never thought i'd say that about someone who doesn't play guitar! but it's true. she writes really gorgeous songs, arranges them so brilliantly, and performs them with such intensity. i always laugh, and virtually always cry, at her live shows simply because she reminds her audience what it's like to really feel passionate about what you do. she's a shining star with no pretense and no annoying ego. just a really amazing, talented young woman. definitely go see her if you can, you won't be sprry (but bring money, because you will leave the show with all of her cd's!) :)
