i am sure the money won't be there to fly , but the sparkiemobile will get us
there...
i have been unemployed for the first time in 38 years now since
september.....with no savings it really hurts to go from 67k a year to
notta....anyway....just got a job, begins 3/1 and it is 65k....so i am dreaming about a road trip
if necessary to reward me, my wife and our daughter with an ig show.

one of my friends...bridgett,,,hi.,,,,,did bring over the new cd...she was
kind enough to buy me one....so we ( about 4 of us) sat and played guitar with
oit...i am teaching them how to play guitar.....anyway....

sparkie going back to lurking....

question tho....
i onlly have gotten a few emails....is this the "main" list, has it just been

ok, for clarification's sake...i am well aware that michelle malone put out
a rockin' album recently. the question was not so much...where (in general)
is michelle? but, more like...where is she on this album? since...you know,
she usually makes an appearance or two on the albums. that's all. no big
deal. from now on, i will remember to add a disclaimer to my posts so
they're not taken too seriously.

i agree completely with the comment about how musical guests are treated on these talk shows.

they are stuck on at the end of the show and never interviewed. usually, the guests that are interviewed have so little to say, what would it hurt to hear from a musician once in a while?

it seems like most of these talk shows are stuck in some format that nobody wants to change. why not have the musical guests on first? why not break up the order of things?

the houston show goes on sale through ticketmaster
next sat. 2/28 @ 10am.
the dallas show is also through ticketmaster, but i do
not know when they go on sale (not presently for sale)
the austin show went on sale last sat. 2/21 and is
general admission.  tics are $32 each including fees.
get tics from front gate tickets linked on the stubbs
bbq website.

btw the best of the 3 texas venues will likely be the
granada theatre in dallas, a recently renovated art
deco movie theater.  it is small and intimate and has
a two row orchestra pit up front, for which i hope to
snag a couple of seats!
stubbs bbq is general admission.
the verizon wireless (aeriel) theatre in houston is a
medium-sized venue. it probably holds about 2,500.

if anyone knows of any advance tickets sales and/or
required passwords, then please let me know!!!

there are a couple of issues that play into the so-called "treatment" of
musical guests on talk shows:

-it's marketing, plain and simple.  when a musical act is featured on a
talk show, the show is going to attract (hopefully) a whole new segment
of watchers for that episode.  it would be just plain silly to show the
musical act first, because then the new audience that tuned in
specifically for that act would not continue to watch.  the producers
are hoping that by forcing folks to sit through the entire show in
anticipation of the musical segment, they'll convert some of them into
regular viewers.

-when performers are contracted to make an appearance on such a show,
they negotiate exactly how many songs they'll perform, whether or not
they'll do an interview, etc.  if a performer only does one song,
chances are, it's because that is all he or she wanted to perform.  a
lot of times, musical guests consent to performing on talk shows as a
favor to the hosts or producers, so their appearance is usually
scheduled in conjunction with other things they are doing in the same
geographic location -- concerts, filming movies or videos, etc. -- and
the performers are probably pressed for time to begin with, so they make
their appearance short.

the show will be in about 7 and a half hours from time of writing: tuesday
midnight pacific and 3:00 a.m. eastern time in the us, 6:00 p.m. eastern
standard time in australia, and 8:00 gmt.  it'll go for 3 hours.

hi to everyone,

i realize this is a total longshot, but i may as well give it a try. i
really, really, really want to go to this show, but i am short on bucks
right now. however, i have a skill i can trade for a ticket: i am a
certified massage therapist. i will gladly trade a one hour swedish massage
for a ticket to this show. i can come to your home to give the massage or
you can come to my office in toms river, nj. i also have some training in
reflexology, so if that interests you, we can discuss trading reflexology
for a ticket.

i'm not a creep, just a desparate ig fan. if you want to check my
credentials, just ask and i will put you in touch with the massage school i
graduated from.

if neither massage nor reflexolgy interest you, i also work in the pet
reptile industry and could possibly get you a frog, snake, turtle, lizard,
or tarantula for a ticket.

and for those of you going to shows, keep the set lists coming!

cheers,
tom m.

passage.(thanks to my sister mi rinda) sorry that my first post on this list
isn't directly about the indigo girls, but this is something i know that the
informed, intelligent, passionate ig fans can help with.  my college paper ran
this article in the opinions section:
http://www.uwrf.edu/student-voice/9016parrish.htm

i am going to write a letter to the editor about it, but i was wondering if
anyone had any points or thoughts they want to suggest while i write it to make
sure it is as effective a letter as possible.  if you have any suggestions,
please email me directly asap!  thank you so much and i can't wait to get my ig

hi gang -- here's the setlist and some info about the show last night at the soiled dove in denver. it was a radio promo thing, and they gave away a few hundred tickets to kbco listeners, and the rest of the room was filled with media people.
-------------------
perfect world
fill it up again
yield
come on home
heartache for everyone
~ questions from the audience

-------------------

the soiled dove is a small venue (holds about 350 at a seated show) and was a great intimate place to see them play. quite a treat for me! the q&a part was really interesting.

someone asked about the rarities disk. amy answered by saying they are still working on it, when they have spare time. it will come out on epic. but she swears that will be soon.

someone asked "how do you know when a song is done?" emily said she never really knows. amy said she records everything, singing it in different ways. then she listens to them over and over. "if i can't stand to listen to it then it's not a song yet!"

they had to tune their own guitars, which i guess is pretty rare anymore. emily said "our shows used to be 6 hours long, with all the tuning and drinking beer!"

someone asked about their thoughts on nader entering the presidential race. emily said she doesn't believe he caused gore to lose the election in 2000 and that his entering the race on an independent ticket is a pretty powerful statement and a really good thing. then amy quickly made sure we all knew that they were not officially endorsing any candidate in any way.

my friend asked about the cover art on atwli. amy answered, said she's been reading a comic called love & rockets since the 80s and she had a crazy idea that it would be cool if the artist for that (jaime hernandez) could do something for them. so it was sort of dream of hers and she really didn't expect it to happen. but he agreed and they gave him all the song lyrics and several ideas for album titles and let him do whatever he wanted. so the cover art, and all the black-and-white drawings that kind of tell the story on the inside, were completly his idea.

short set but wonderful! they said they're not coming back to denver on this next tour, so i'm really glad i got to see them!! :)

it's a crazy little thing called slant rhyme, made particularly famous by
emily dickinson. the rhyme doesn't have to be exact. considering how inane
many "true" rhymes are, i could care less if lyrics have any rhyme at all
as long as they tell a good story/idea/feeling.

all of some lists are logged permanently on the web.

among others, my posts to
melissa ferrick, melissa etheridge, patty larkin,
jess klein, patti smith, laura love,
         me'shell ndegeocello, the velvet janes,
         peter mulvey, dat-heads, orienteering list,
the "ecto" list and its subordinates,
even a private trade to an ani difranco boot,
         plus several other sites,
all are on the web, presumably longer than i'll be around.  :)

but you can prevent (most) systems from ever logging your messages
in the archives, they won't ever show up on the web, although
people who respond to your email (and include your email address)
will still show you on the web.

just use the following as the first line of your message:
     x-no-archive: yes

it won't stop people from copying your email to their sites, but
it will stop automatic logging of google, yahoo, and most others.

mime-version: 1.0

hi everyone -
i am not one to forward petitions... however, people for the american way is
reputable secular organization that is taking action against our lovely
president and his religious bigotry. please see below and go sign the petition.
lisa

dear activist,

today, president bush officially endorsed a federal constitutional amendment
that would require discrimination against same-sex couples and their families.
bush's announcement was nothing more or less than we expected - the proposal
of a divisive and radical scheme couched in misleading rhetoric about
compassion and respect. thanks to you, we already have a head start in our campaign to
send bush what he isn't expecting: a resounding defeat of this so-called
"federal marriage amendment."
so far, we have gathered a core group of 20,000 people pledged to save our
constitution from any amendment that would require discrimination against any
group of americans. a powerful voice for fairness and equality has entered this
momentous, national debate, and that voice belongs to you.
the diversity of our group is inspiring and will help lead us to victory.
even some self-identified conservatives have been moved to action, uniting with
us against the polarizing tactics that a number of their usual political allies
are employing.
now, let's make our voice bigger and louder. with bush's endorsement,
congressional committees could move to begin hearings on a constitutional amendment
in a couple of weeks. in that time, help expand our core group to 50,000 by
asking two friends or colleagues to sign the save our constitution petition.
forward this link to your friends:
http://www.pfaw.org/go/save_our_constitution/
but, mobilizing others is just one part of the challenge. we must also swamp
members of the house and senate judiciary committees with mail opposing the
anti-family marriage amendment. to do this, we're giving you the tools and
support needed to organize your own letter-writing event - click here.
the judiciary committees will likely be the first to evaluate proposals to
amend the constitution, and we want the pressure on them to be both large and
visible. the constitution belongs to the people, so these committee members
should hear not only from their own constituents but from americans everywhere.
the idea is simple, and the impact is great. all you need are tables, pens,
paper, envelopes and postage stamps. you set the date, the guest list and
letter goal for your event. count up your completed letters at the end, drop them
in the mail to washington, dc, and submit the tally to our equality mailbag. we
would welcome photographs of events, too - send them here.
individually, we stood up and declared that we won't allow discrimination
back in the constitution. next, we need to work as a team, reaching out to our
friends to sign the petition and write letters. friend to friend, town to town,
the grassroots strength to save our constitution is building one action at a
time.
thank you for making this great start possible,
people for the american way
p.s. - more than 4,000 letters have already been sent by people for activists
to newspapers and broadcasters across the country. we're hearing fantastic
feedback from them and believe the effect is evident in the articles being
written on this issue. if you haven't written a letter to the editor yet, or would
like to write another in light of today's news, you may do so at:

hello, all.

i am not with anyone right now, but this is only the beginning of the
squelching of the rest of our rights as american citizens.

mr. president, you bigot!  isn't it enough that our marriages are not
"recognized?"  isn't it enough that ministers that choose to marry gay couples have
to endure criticism and rejection from their peers?  why must you make it
illegal to marry gay couples?

i am in the middle of moving this weekend, but if anyone is in or near st.
louis and wants to try to organize one of these letter writing sessions or any
other event to try to keep what rights we have, please email me privately and
let's set something up!

peace,

i agree about the rhyming.  it is just not necessary for rhymes to be present
for me to enjoy good lyrics.

i only received my cd yesterday (thank you, sony!--not)  my poster, of
course, is backordered.  next time, i will just go to the store and buy myself a
copy on the tuesday it is released.  i will look on ebay a couple weeks after the
release for all the promotional items as they are usually there.  forget the
preordering and the marketing hocus pocus.  ig is about the music!

i must say that i am not crazy about atwli.  i like dairy queen, but i have
already heard that one numerous times.  there was just nothing that jumped out
and grabbed me as there is on every other cd.  yes, the songs are good, but
there are not any catchy tunes that immediately make their way into my heart.
yes, folks, this one will have to grow on me.  i do like the dvd.  i still
enjoyed watching them perform the songs live.  i just don't enjoy this cd as i do
many others.  i for one am ready for another more "rocky" or "punky" album
with amy passionately banging on her guitar and emily moving her fingers over the
strings of an electric guitar!  oh, well.  my 2 cents.

yeah, i have to agree - that rhyme didn't bother me nearly as much as the
fact that emily uses the rather obvious pairing of "chance/glance" in two
different songs on this disc.  seems a little like she's phoning it in to me.
"chance/glance" doesn't really qualify as a motif worthy of expansion in my book.  i
do, however, like amy's pairing of manumission and mausoleum - that's a slant
rhyme to be proud of!

my quickie response to atwli is that i tend to skip all of emily's songs,
except maybe atwli itself, but love almost all of amy's.  "tether" is one of the
best things she's ever written, with a haunting sound at the beginning and a
true wrestling with the current situation in our world - is it possible to
avoid war?  is there some middle ground?  can we as a country, as neighbors, come
together, let alone all of us as world citizens?  it gets deeper for me every
time i listen to it.

i've finally had time to allow the new cd to soak in a bit, and thought
i'd share a few things.

first off, i've heard very little comment about the "story" contained
in the illustrations in the lyric booklet.  i love it!  this young
girl, obviously living in a natural area that's being exploited by
industry, sees a glint in the sky and upon investigating, discovers an
earth goddess statue, possibly fallen from heaven.  she takes it home,
and sets it up in her house, but the statue seems to tell her that its
proper place is out of doors, where it can be seen.  soon, she sees
another streak, and she brings the second statue together with the
first.  over time, the sky gets filled with such "arrivals", and she
makes it her life's work to find and bring all these into the light and
up on their little earth mound altars.  finally, lying on her bed
(death bed?), the whole surrounding countryside is filled with
beautiful little totems, all of them raising an arm in greeting to
whomever may pass by.

who is this jaime hernandez?  has she done other things?  are these
illustrations from a larger work, or something specifically done for
this ig album?  in any case, i'm very impressed and struck by this
lyrical statement about what it means to be working for the cause of
good in the world today, and how difficult it is, and yet how much it
can effect change that grows of its own accord.

heartache for everyone is a great song.  get over it.  doesn't anyone
remember how "shocking" it was to hear three hits for the first time
after being used to ig and nis?  what about shed your skin?  or for
that matter, the first time you played cons, and that in-your-face
beginning of go made you leap to turn down the volume knob on your
stereo?  if ig doesn't stretch us every once in a while, and do it with
the wonderful artistic integrity they obviously show on heartache, then
they end up as a parody of themselves, like elton john is these days.

tether needs to be a single, with a wonderfully moody video to go with
it.  there's always one amy song on every album that seems as if it
needs a life all its own, and tether would be it.  (past such songs
have been don't give that girl a gun (which i'd love to hear elvis
costello or tom petty cover), and sister.)

i'm sorry, but no matter how many times i listen to cordova, the
instrumentation on it sounds to me like some of the quieter moments on
nine inch nails' album the
fragile.  i never thought i'd get to compare ig and nin.

i keep thinking i should compile a website and book project about the
belief system i find spread throughout rock-n-roll.  there seem to be
two sides of the coin (like most religious symbolism), the
sex-drugs-rock-n-roll side, and the peace-love-rock-n-roll side.  of
course, i'm more interested in the latter.  the book would end up
taking on the form of a "hymnal", with songs in it that express a deep
spiritual yearning for the freedom that could be achieved if, simply,
everyone would believe at the same time that love is the most powerful,
unifying, unselfish force possible, and implement that belief so
radically that it would change everything.

songs in that book would include uncle john's band, revolution 1, and,
among others, perfect world and all that we let in.

i loaded atwli into my nomad jukebox, as i have all my other ig
releases, and have been listening to the entire catalog on random for
the past couple of days.  the new songs fit into the canon quite
nicely, although i do find that, on some level, they seem like
"simpler" songs than on earlier efforts.  more strumming, less
interweaving of voices and guitars... but then, that's been the trend
for them for a good 4 albums now.  i wonder, do the girls themselves
ever go back and listen to their older releases?  i wonder what they
think of them, if they do.

who is jaime hernandez????

he is one of the artists (the other being his brother) responsible for
the love & rockets comic book series.  here is a link to more
information about him:  http://www.zompist.com/loveroc1.html

a member of the official bbs wrote to jaime regarding the concept for
the cover art, and this is what jaime replied:

one night i threw together the images and the story primeraly (?) to
capture all the feelings and attitude in the songs the best i could. at
first i thought they would clash with the girls' intentions since this
was their record and not mine, but they ended up liking my roughs right
off the bat so i thought, what the hell? i guess it helped that amy
liked my comic work already.=20
the cover artwork was one of those "dropping off to sleep at night"
images that just popped into my head. i've always been a fan of album
art where there was always just a teeny tiny inkling (or sometimes even
no inkling) relating to the album concept.=20

also, at one of the private shows sponsored by radio stations, an
audience member asked the following question regarding the cover art ...
thanks to bbs member makeitbetter for transcribing and posting this:

amanda: ok, well first of all, i love you. my question is that i noticed
that there's a lot of people wondering what the meaning of your album
cover is. but i'm wondering what you guys were thinking of when you
conceived of the idea and the artwork and the inside and...=20

amy: well, uh, jaime hernandez, from the hernandez brothers, he um, he
actually came up with the whole, the whole thing, the whole concept. and
he said, he wrote a story about it and um the cover is sort of like the
mixture of nature and technology, you know, to him. and then, within the
cover, within the booklet is a story about his person who, she sees a
shooting star and goes to where it lands and finds this goddess figure
and keeps finding them as, as the stars fall, and um it's sort of like
opening yourself up to the world of possibilities, and they comfort her
through her whole life, and it's a, it's a very moving story. and you
have to check it out. he's a, he's just a great artist. it's an honor to
have him do it.

the oxygen website now lists the show that ig were on in their
schedule.  it's set to replay on friday, 2/27 at 11pm eastern/10 pm
central.  i am thankful as i missed them first time around.  i also
missed them on tuesday's apparent chicago radio performance.  i hear
they performed on the mix 101.9 which is shocking as it's a top 40
station.  any chicagoans hear it or can confirm where they played/what
they played?  so much exposure.  i just love it.--greg

some smart fan has been kind enough to list another auction giving away the
password.  according to feedback the first "seller" has auctioned off other
artist's presale passwords in the past.   what a word!

two days ago i was talking to a friend about the new cd and the whole sony
preorder disaster.  we talked about 40 minutes as i was driving home from work.

i stopped off at schnuck's supermarket to pick up my weekly dose of low-carb
ice cream and who was being piped in over the speakers but ig!  of course,
they were playing peace tonight, a more mainstream song, but still--it is ig.

also, ticket bastard has lost my ig tickets in the mail and they will not
reprint until 48 hours before the show.  this means a trip to the box office on
the day of the event.  it is general admission.  the doors open one hour prior
to the show.  i have a handicapped person to take in and am supposed to be at
the door 15 minutes before the doors open; however, i can't pick up the
tickets until 1 hour before the event, so i guess we will be trampled.  i do have to
be there in person to pick up since they are on my credit card.  anyone have
any ideas on how to get around this?

last night at the wbos mini-concert at the paradise lounge, amy said that this is one of her
favorite artists (jaime hernandez), who writes a political comic strip series called
"love and rockets". you can read more about jaime and his (not her) brother gilbert at

just to clarify, "love & rockets" was not a "political comic strip" --
it was a full-blown series of comic books which were totally
groundbreaking for their time.  the comics featured lesbian and women of
color main characters and dealt with issues like hiv/aids.  they were
very ahead of their time.

after getting the new cd sent to the wrong address and a couple of other misadventures, i finally got it.

on first listen, i liked emily's songs on this album a lot more than on by. her songs on that album sounded so sad. the new songs don't seem as melodramtic.

my favorite amy song is probably dairy queen. i like the images she invokes in her lyrics. tether is pretty good also, it makes me think.

i liked the footage i saw on the enclosed dvd, i read now that the footage from that show will be part of a pay-per-view event. i hope i get to order it or get hooked up with a copy of it. since the bottom line is going out of business, this might be the last filmed event in the location. i can't wait to see the whole concert.

i liked the comic type artwork, though i was hoping for a least one good photo of amy and emily in the artwork but i didn't see it. oh well. i will miss them being on epic, but i'm sure they will make good music on whatever label they choose down the road. this may be the best time to leave a major label anyway.

the river show was short - 3 songs (i got a phone call and i only heard
perfect world ending - then fill it up again and ctf - they talked about
how joan osbourne was on the record, how jimmy carter was thanked (was it
me or was this radio personality a idiot - i mean - it just irritates me
when people dont do there research...)

my recording is horrid - and the performance wasnt too incredible (sorry -
after hearing god knows how many boots etc, this was unmemorable, altho i
need someone to hook up with and call me from one of these shos - i guess
everyone did it last night at bos...

so my prediction - fleet boston pavillion will be the venue - which is
sooooooo impersonal - they are like 15 ft above the crowd and it usually is
the same day as pride - so everyone gets drunk - call me jaded - i wanna
see them at radio city - that's a venue!!!!

(ok, or the camden opera house in camden maine, or maine center for the

great points.  and yes, i remember the first time i heard that drum machine in shed your skin....and the volume of go.  i also remember hearing those electric guitars ring out in the middle of touch me fall.  i didn't have any kind of shock over three hits, though...why?

(btw, i think elton's last release, "songs from the west coast" was very good...i think he's a parody in concert but not as bad as billy joel.  as much as i love billy...at least elton's still putting out new contemporary music.)

i think it's too long to be a single, unfortunately.  :(  i can't picture hearing it on radio.  i can't picture hearing any of this stuff on radio, actually...maybe perfect world, but that's it.  such a sad comment on the state of radio.

same for me on my ipod.  :)  although i've been leaning towards 1200 curfews this week.

like i mentioned before, i think that both become you and this one play it relatively safe.  both cons and sots were pretty adventurous....and i needed months (years with sots) for them to grow on me.  maybe they can't afford that type of growth.  that type of growth doesn't sell records.  :(

but i really do miss the days of so and rop.  (maybe i just miss jerry and sara?)  i really am just yearning for an acoustic duo record.  just the two of them.  two instruments, two voices.  thrown in michelle once or twice for good measure.

great points, graham.

i second that, the sooner the better!  but i do like atwli, it grew on me quite quickly and at least half the tunes run around in my head while i'm working :-)   such good musicians, i am in awe.  as for the rhymes, don't need them to sound exact, 'sight rhymes' are a time-honoured poetic device ;-)

i'd like to ask them to explain the book of days.
they've both used the phrase in songs (amy - devotion,
emily - i ferget which one, but its on atwli).  i
figured out the general concept.. but im not sure how
it would apply to a single person.

i got to ask them this question i've been wanting to ask them since the bottom line show.  at the san francisco private show, they did a q and a (as they did at all of the private shows this time around), so i had my chance.  anyway, since the bottom line show, when amy introduced "tether" as another song she wrote for her neighbor, and endless source of songs for her, i was wondering if amy's neighbor knows that she's writing all of these songs for him.  more importantly, i wondered if he knew who she is (not just as amy, his neighbor, but as amy ray, the indigo girl).  i was pretty stoked to get that one answered.

the answer was yes, she plays her songs for him (they actually get along despite their very different political views) and yes, he knows who she is.

i don't know that they are the best.  i think they are what we
"teethed" on and grew on and know the best.  they are familiar to
us.  their style has evolved, gotten richer (imo) and is quite
different from the first music we were introduced to.

i actually found myself singing something from atwli today
(although i didn't realize it until i got to a part that i didn't know the=

words to. lol!)

remember back when we were all asked what we would
like to see on the rarities album?  what did y'all
suggest?  i said that i would like winthrop, that
rocking version of power of two from the suffragette
sessions, and their cover of mona lisas and mad
hatters.  and emily playing get out the map at the new
orleans jazz fest.  it was the first time she played
it, and it was just her and a banjo.  the vocals
weren't all worked out yet, but i thought it was an
interesting version.  i think that was also the same
show where amy played shame on you for the first time.

this is either a bold step for civil rights or the grounds for the first gay divorce! you decide:

-scott

rosie o'donnell weds longtime girlfriend

by lisa leff, associated press writer

san francisco - rosie o'donnell (news) married her longtime girlfriend thursday, taking what she called a proud stand for gay civil rights in the city where more than 3,300 other same-sex couples have tied the knot since feb. 12.

"i want to thank the city of san francisco for this amazing stance the mayor has taken for all the people here, not just us but all the thousands and thousands of loving, law-abiding couples," the former talk show host, holding a large bouquet of purple and yellow flowers, said after she and kelli carpenter emerged from their brief ceremony inside mayor gavin newsom's office.

earlier thursday, o'donnell announced her wedding plans on abc's "good morning america," just two days after president bush (news - web sites) called for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

she said the president's call is what inspired her to come to san francisco, where city officials continue to perform same-sex weddings even as state courts are considering the legality of those marriages.

"i think the actions of the president are, in my opinion, the most vile and hateful words ever spoken by a sitting president," o'donnell, who lives in the new york city region, said on the program. "i am stunned and i'm horrified.

"i find this proposed amendment very, very, very, very shocking. and immoral. and, you know, if civil disobedience is the way to go about change, then i think a lot of people will be going to san francisco. and i hope they put more people on the steps to marry as many people as show up. and i hope everyone shows up."

o'donnell and carpenter, who have four children together, walked hand in hand down the grand marble staircase in the rotunda to thunderous applause from hundreds of spectators who came to witness the city's first celebrity same-sex wedding. o'donnell was wearing a powder-blue blazer, black shirt and black pants; carpenter wore a gray pantsuit.

as the san francisco's gay men's chorus serenaded the couple with a few bars of "going to the chapel," o'donnell smiled and said, "we really did. we got married."

o'donnell said she decided to marry carpenter, a former dancer and marketing director at nickelodeon, during her recent trial in new york over the now-defunct rosie magazine. during the case, she referred to carpenter as her wife.

"we applied for spousal privilege and were denied it by the state. as a result, everything that i said to kelli, every letter that i wrote her, every e-mail, every correspondence and conversation was entered into the record," o'donnell said. "after the trial, i am now and will forever be a total proponent of gay marriage."

atwli debuted at number 35 on the billboard album

bought helped out...

subject:      politics'and last night's show

okay, friends, i didn't want to write a review of last night's show at the paradise lounge because i thought it would appear to be gloating, and, well, i hate that! but since so many of you are interested, here goes:

but first! i need to take issue with victoria's statement that the los bors hernandez strips are not 'political' cartoons but then she goes on to say that they are about lesbians and gays, women of color, and people living with aids. i don't know what your definition is, victoria, but to my way of thinking those are most definitely political issues! i didn't mean 'politics' as in republican and democrat-- the word 'political' is way bigger than simply talking about elecions and candidates. anytime you represent people and views that are silenced in the mainstream, you are acting in a political way, imo.

okay, now, on to the show. i am, first of all, so sad for all of you who didn't get tickets because until monday night at 8 pm i was in your shoes. i feel very lucky to have had a good friend who won them for me, and i have no words for how kind that single act was. it just was and she knows how much i appreicate her!

they let us in around 6 pm, and we all milled around the stage, and drank and ate, until the girls came on stage around 7:30. they looked and sounded wonderful! especially emily, who looks well-rested, fit, and especially on top of her game. the set list, not in exact order:

perfect world
yield
free in you
heartache for everyone
fill it up again
get out the map
galileo
and
perfect world (again-- because amy messed up the lyrics the first time-- she messed up the line "if the miracle of daybreak doesn't move you anymore", and maybe some other lines i didn't notice as much as that one! and they needed a perfect recording of it for the radio re-broadcast)

in between songs they answered questions, like the one i quoted earlier about the artwork in atwli and los bros hernandez. they also answered a question about their greatest musical influences-- amy said hers was 'the southern independent music scene' and named some bands like danielle howle, the rock ateens, and some others people i can't recall right now. she also said she loved the clash. emily said-- get ready for this people-- her greatest musical influence is soul and hip hop, and she named (i think) mary j blige and queen latifah...anyone hear that in her songs? cause i sure don't! but it's a fun mental image to think of emily rockin' out to the sistahs :)

other questions: yes, they are coming back to boston this summer when it's warm:) also someone asked what's next for them now that their contract is done with epic. amy said a bunch of nice stuff about epic (she was being recorded by the radio station, remember) and then said that they hadn't decided yet if they'd be on an indie label or a major label (emily clearly wants that choice) but the major news is they will be together!!! everyone cheered at that.

the final interesting question was, are they happy with where they are in their careers now? emily (who answered most of the questions, surprisingly) said yes, they sometimes wished they had more airplay or record sales and they know if they weren't lesbians who are outspoken activists they probably would be played more, but that doesn't bother them. again lots of cheering!

okay, so that's my recollection. it was a perfect night, albeit too brief. they didn't stop to sign or stuff or pose for pictures but they were very nice about not doing it.

love them girlies,

sus

yep! it was quite shocking to hear them on wtmx. they came on about
3:10-3:15, i think. i had left work early and was flipping around
stations, and caught the dj said they'd be right back with indigo girls.
he sometimes plays closer to fine, so of course i had to leave it on to
hear what he was going to play, thinking maybe he'd play something off
the new cd. i almost crashed the car when he came back and said, "we're
live here with amy and emily of the indigo girls". they did a question
and answer thing with dave fogel (the dj). he's a smart aleck, and kept
calling amy mean because the last time he met her (4 years ago), he
thought she was mean. she had to explain that was the february show at
house of blues when she had her appendicitis attack. she reminded him
she was sick, and he seemed a little impressed that she actually played
at all that night, and called her the example of "the show must go on",
but he still kept calling her "amy, the mean one". they talked about
touring with shawn mullins this go around, and how he has the same
management company as them. the dj asked if when they write songs they
think of each other's part on the song. amy said she never used to
think about it, but now she will write thinking about the parts emily
will sing. emily said she usually doesn't think about it. so, he kind
of ran with that about how amy thinks about emily, but emily doesn't
think about amy. emily said they call his kind a "coat hanger". he
stirs up trouble, then takes the coats and holds them while he watches
the people fight it out after his comments. it was pretty funny. they
talked about their performance on ellen. both said they don't watch
themselves on t.v. amy went as far as to laugh and say, "i know what i
look like, i don't need to see it on tv." it was pretty funny. but
both of them said they love ellen. emily said that ellen took singing
with them very seriously, and she did a good job when the dj pointed out
how ellen said she blew closer to fine last time she sang with them
sounding like william shatner sing-talking, emily and amy both said they
love her, and she does a fine, and shouldn't be nervous or worried about
them. emily did mention she heard their 2nd song got cut off, but said,
"that's tv.". let's see, what else...the dj teased them about their
tour starting east and going west, since the weather is nicer west right
now they should have started there, and both of the girls laughed about
that. amy said "we take it where we can get it". they were on for
maybe 20 minutes. i guess they had performed a small mini concert for a
few listeners already. the songs they did live on the radio were
perfect world and closer to fine. it was really exciting hearing them
on the radio! if you go to www/wtmx.com, and then to the picture
gallery section, you can see a few pictures from that day.

they were also in town to do a "live from studio x" for wxrt that night.
terri hemmert (chicago's best dj) said the show that night was awesome.
wxrt will be airing it in a couple weeks.

hope that's helpful!

have a good day!
donna

hi all,

i'm not sure how i'd ask it, but i'd like them to know that i've really
enjoyed the musical journey they've taken me on throughout their careers,
and i'd want to know if they've enjoyed it, and their thoughts on the
evolution of their music.

and i'd also have to ask them when they're coming back to australia.  next
month it'll be 4 years since the last australian tour was cancelled!

freedom, liberty, bondage, discrimination, loss, resurrection. the girls are

hmm. i disagree. out of the first five, two (nis and sf) are among my least
favorite ig albums. if i were to arrange them in order of how i like them
the list would be:

1. indigo girls
2. rites of passage
3. swamp ophelia
4. become you
5. come on now social
6. nomads indians saints
7. strange fire
8. shaming of the sun

i left off atwli because i haven't had time to really grok it, yet. i
suspect it will become #6 and bump down the rest. i do love all the ig
albums, but clearly, some are better than others.

cheers,

1.  come on now social
2.  swamp ophelia
3.  rights of passage
4.  nomads indians saints
5.  become you
6.  shaming of the sun
7.  all that we let in
8.  indigo girls
9.  strange fire
and technically, nis, by, and sots all tied for 4th place.
please don't ever make me do that again, now i have to go coddle strange fire for making it feel like it's not good enough!!!

which are the tracks on atwli where you played piano?

for emily:
with her solo work, amy now has to choose what is an "ig" song and what is a
"non-ig" song.  has her solo work had any effect what you consider a proper "ig"
song when you write on your own?

susan,

no need to "take issue," what i was trying to communicate in my post was =
that "love & rockets" was not a "comic strip" as you described, but =
rather, a full-fledged series of comic books.  i wasn't contesting the =
"political" bit in the least ... so i am sorry if that wasn't clear.

it seems that more so than with other albums, they are extensively
promoting (i.e., radio promotions, sony website and offers, tv
appearances, etc.) and touring with this album (i.e., russell says that
they will be "everywhere" this year, performing more days than not in
march, etc.). so, my questions relate to this.

1) is there more pressure from sony to promote and tour with this album
and, if so, is it related to this being their last album with them?
2) do they like to promote and tour this much? (i think somewhere i read
that it suits amy more than emily.)
3) how do they keep themselves (and their voices) well with so much
travel and so many performances? how do they maintain their mental
health and enthusiasm while on the road? i love being the benefactor of
extensive touring, but i do worry and wonder about them, you know?
