i saw the new full band line up for the first time live on sunday down at the atlanta motor speedway where they did about a half hour set. as amazing as the original line up was the new line up is still very entertaining. if you are going to be in the atlanta area for the ballet and not going to it on friday night you really should go see sugarland at the variety playhouse in little five points.
if you are not lucky enough to be able to see them now. i'm sure you will start hearing about them in early may, when their first single is going to be released on mca nashville.

it was played on friday night. not on saturday, from what i hear, but i was there friday and definitely heard it. :)
fwiw, i never get sick of hearing this live. and given that most people at ig shows are not nutty fans like us but just casual fans, i feel bad that they didn't get to hear it on saturday. it was the first time everybody stood up on friday night, and the entire venue was singing along. it was a great moment.
i often think about whether the girls are sick of playing it, but everytime i see them play it, they just seem to be so happy to sing it, and to hear it sung back to them. while watching it on friday, i thought about how wonderful they must be as people to know that ctf is still their biggest "well-known" hit (with galileo trailing second), and that it probably won't get any bigger than that, but they don't avoid it or treat it like the lead ball attached to their foot - they still embrace it and celebrate it, and never seem bitter at all about still having to play it.
no, the only song i am truly sick of hearing at every concert i go to is "kid fears." let the flaming begin! :)
jason (who lost his shit completely during love's recovery and love will come to you on friday)

i think part of the reason why they didn't play ctf on saturday was
because radio city is really strict about curfew ... for example, they
start the show at 9:05pm whether the performers are ready or not (and ig
were not ready when they dimmed the houselights on saturday night). and
the performers have to be off the stage at 11pm sharp. the show was
running long ... after the set, ig commented that they were only going
to walk off stage for a few seconds and come back and do the encore
because of the curfew issues. so, i am guessing that had something to
do with it.
also, the house was packed on sat. night -- on fri., the mezzanines were
pretty much empty. and the crowd was more of a stand up and dance
crowd, so the energy level was there.
victoria
p.s. i am sick of "kid fears" too.

i still love hearing galileo, i just get sick of hearing the requests for it from the minute they walk on stage. i wish they'd just tell everybody that they'll play it at the end, but that would ruin the crowd's excitement...

yep. that's right....a pair of two tickets on mf1 or 2 (i forgot.) row d
just four rows back from the box.....i've been to the orpheum and you
get a really good view anywhere there. but i found better seats.
i'm actually going to lose money selling these because i paid $135 (on
ebay)...you pay $85.....because i so want to get rid of these
and i would love for them to go to an ig fan.
if you can't do that let me know and maybe we can strike a deal.

and as of right now when i am composing this....they aren't rescheduled
for this

but.....thursday and friday's shows have not

hopefully he'll give their die-hards a break.
i wonder if they even they even know how long some of us have been

if you don't mind his cliches about the gay community, it was a pretty
good review. his progesterone laced awareness, however, didn't
prevent him from giving a few well articulated kudos to the girls.
wish i could have been there, especially to hear the electric set.

girls gone mild
by dan aquilante
march 15, 2004 -- most guys would place going to an indigo girls
concert on par with watching ellen degeneres interview rosie o'donnell
about lactating lesbians. but at radio city music hall friday night,
the grammy-winning duo was able to snuff that kind chauvinism with a
healthy dose of rock, folk and country.
sure, the estrogen-charged atmosphere at the music hall bolstered the
perception that this is the band for ladies with a queer pal for the
straight gal, yet the music displayed honesty and self-awareness -
qualities that not only transcended gender and genre, but are
essential to the singer/songwriter craft.
at this show, if you didn't hear the distinct influence of '60s
artists such as bob dylan, joni mitchell and tim hardin, you either
weren't listening or were too young to know the references.
friday's show, the first of two sold-out concerts, features a career
retrospective program with an emphasis on the indigos' 2004 release
"all that we let in."
the indigo girls didn't come on gangbusters. as if feeling out the
audience, as well as the big hall, they didn't get a real fire going
until the third song, "fill it up again."
despite the apparent devotion of the audience members, it was hard to
rouse them out of their seats.
instead, most of the ladies in the house listened and watched as if it
were a coffeehouse performance even when blonde emily saliers and
brunette amy ray, the band principals, strapped on electric guitars
and rocked out.
the audience was most responsive when the indigos dismissed their
three-piece back-up band and let the music turn down country roads and
into backwoods acoustic arrangements. for those songs with old-time
flavor, guitars were lost and ray worked the mandolin and saliers the
banjo. when the pair had no one to depend on except each other, that's
when they were the most engaging.
the bass work was inconsequential, the drumming often haphazard and
the keyboards by carol isaacs only ok. isaacs' finest contribution to
the music was when she accented songs with tin whistle flourishes or
wheezes from her stomach steinway.
there was a folksy, hominess to this indigo girls show that was
punctuated with aw-shucks shuffles and "y'all's." yet when these women
found a song's groove, as they did on "galileo" at the close of the
concert, it's easy to see why they packed one of new york's largest,
most famous halls.

wow! i would really miss it. it's such a postive energy, get up and move
song. i love the energy that comes from the girls and the audience during
this one. plus, when they play it, that means i'll hear at least one song of
my all time favorite cd during their shows.

definitely! that is the only sucky thing about ig shows. you sometimes can't
hear what the girls are saying over the cries for galileo. it nearly ruined
the show at asbury park convention hall in 1999, as i was next to some
screamers that pissed off amy. not good!

i'm not exactly sick of kid fears, but i wouldn't miss it at my next few
shows. the biggest problem i have with it is that there are songs on that
album that i'd rather hear (land of canaan, secure yourself).
i am sick of both shame on you and get out the map. i"ve heard them enough
times live to last forever. plus, i was never a big fan of soy anyway.
again, there's better stuff on that album (hey kind friend, everything in
its...) and much better songs on other albums they could play instead.

dead man's hill and mystery??? holy shit. (if they'd done fugitive, i'd

my three 1/2 cents: i love hearing galileo and ctf, but i agree that galileo
should be first so people don't yell it out for the rest of the show...
victoria - the photos are lovely! what kind of camera were you using? flash
or no flash? i just bought a canon elph and it's pretty cool and works pretty
well without a flash, but i'd be too nervous to use it at a big show like the
ig or tori, especially since i'm taping and that is the more important thing :p

thanks to everyone for the compliments on the photos i posted. i took them
with an olympus
c-750 digital camera. it isn't really all that great in low-light, but as i
was in the second row, there was enough light from the stage lights to
compensate (although that's why there is some distortion and blurriness in
some of the photos). my old sony mavica is much better in low light, but
the zoom and quality isn't as good (my olympus has a 10x optical zoom). i
try not to use flash ever (except at michelle malone shows because she told
me she doesn't mind), but i generally try to follow the lead of the other
folks who are around me taking photos. for example, that night, one of
emily's friends was taking lots of photos with a strong flash, so i did
manage to sneak a few in while she was shooting.
i take a lot of photos at shows. for the 70 or so i posted, there were
probably at least half as many or so that i deleted because they were too
blurry, etc.

to respond to your question about security -- unlike the last time they
played radio city, security was really lax about cameras, etc.
basically, the security guys in the pit said that we could do whatever
we wanted except for use video cameras. they said that was what "the
band" said. so, they let us use our digitals, let us scoot up close to
the stage to get photos, etc. they were very cool. i also booted the
show and they said nothing, even when i'd pull out my recorder to check
it periodically.

howdy ya'll,
when i brought up the amy and cooper: history in song boot that i had i received a ton of responses, info, requests. i thank everyone who sent me info, it filled in all the gaps for me!
thing is, two people requested copies of this boot and i've made those two copies, but only one person sent me their mailing addy. katie, i believe i have one with your addy on it already. but there's another person out there whom i made a disc for that hasn't given me mailing info and i'd like to send it out! so whoever you are, email me privately with the info and i'll send 'er along! otherwise i'll throw it out here to anyone who wants it. peace and love.

dear friends,

anyhoo, my point is i was thinking about grabbing amy and heading to see =
the girls in dallas on 4-17-04 and when i saw the price i saw the prices =
at webtickets.com ...well....i am still trying to close my mouth that =
dropped to the floor.=20
this is what i am seeing...pit or terrance $135 and balcony $95.
okay i know concerts are expensive. and other artist's concerts go for =
much more....i have seen the prices on ebay and ticketmaster.. but have =
i been out of the loop that long that they are that much now?
is this about what everyone else of you are paying in your area? i =
haven't paid that much and the girls are worth it but was just wondering =
if this is typical in your neck of the woods, also.
just curious,

i was curious about those prices until i realized that
webtickets.com is a ticket broker. if you look at
frontgate.com, ig tix at that venue are on sale for
$27.

i think webtickets.com might be a ticket broker. if it is, you are
essentially paying scalper's prices. if the show is not sold out, try the
venue or the indigo direct deal. i didnt see dallas on ticketmaster.

29 people responded to this poll.
the results are:
kerry 58.6%
bush 10.35%
nader 10.35%
kucinich 10.35%
dean 10.35%
17 votes for kerry
3 votes each for the other four
i am personally happy with the results. i believe
that george w. has taken america down a terrible path
and must be removed from office in the worst way!
i am not a democrat, but kerry is the only viable
candidate to unseat bush, so that's who i'll be voting
for.
actually i am a libertarian and have twice run for
political office as a libertarian. however, now is
not the time to support a minor candidate or party.
i encourage everyone to vote for kerry to ensure bush
leaves office before he completely ruins america and
the world.
yes, i really feel that strongly about the current
situation!

he noted that kerry won this straw poll, and i'm happy with that
result, too, but the greater sadness is that only 29 people voted in the straw
poll. hopefuly, that is not indicative of the real election in november. get out
and vote, folks! it's a privilege people in many parts of the world would love
to have. by comparison, in russia, the election doesn't even count unless they
get 50%-plus to the polls.

i forgot to send my vote in, but it would have been for kerry. for
the same reason as you. i'm a registered green and i got our state
survey the other day and one of the choices was "don't run a
candidate" that is what i chose. and like you, now is not the time

with all the people who are voting for kerry when they'd actually rather be
voting for someone else - not just on this list, but everywhere it seems -
it makes me wonder what would happen if everyone voted for who they want,
instead of who might have the best chance of winning against bush? i know
most of the kerry voters would say that what will happen is that bush will
get in again. but, out of all of the people i know, or have heard, are
voting for kerry, not one is actually voting for him because they like him!

i'm voting for kucinich because i believe one should always vote for the
person who best represents the direction you want the country to go

a candidate is always electible if people would just vote for them.

since no one else posted about the 3-15-04 show, here goes. i didn't
write down a setlist but i guess you can get that at the indigo website
posted previously.
cordero had car trouble, but 3 members of the band showed up late and
did 3 acoustic numbers.
amy and emily were excellent. they played for about 90 minutes including
encores. amy mentioned having a sore throat and was sucking on lozengers
all night. her voice sounded fine but she avoided songs where she would
have strained her voice, like chickenman. emily was smokin on the guitar
and her voice sounded great. it was mostly a sitdown crowd but there was
plenty of applause to show appreciation. it didnt look like the show was
a sellout and the theatre is not that large.
i am grateful amy didnt cancel the show due to her throat, and we didnt
get lost (as usual) in pittsburgh, and the blizzard waited 1 more day to
hit!
hello to the girl we met in starbucks! we saw you managed to sell your

here's the deal. kuchinik and clark best matched what i believed

the primaries i do believe that we should vote for the person that
we best feel represents our goals, beliefs, values. but when faced
with what is looking like a presidential race between kerry and
bush, i would much rather use my vote against bush and for the
person i felt was going to get him out of office, using the logic of
how most people vote in this country.
i really wish we had a "none of these candidates" as an option
sometimes. it would be interesting to see how that count would
turn out nationally!

what an amusing little statement. the operative words: "if people would
just vote for them." yeah. anyone could get elected if people would just
vote for them.
since kerry won the nomination about two weeks ago and illinois' primary
didn't matter, i went ahead and voted for kucinich. he got 3% of the vote
in illinois. people who have already dropped out of the race (dean,
edwards) got more votes than he did. as nice as it would be, as much as we
might like to think it, there is no way that a majority of democrats and
left-leaning independents would vote for kucinich, let alone a majority of
americans. not because they don't think he'd win, but because they don't
agree with us.
we really need to face this fact. we can't get a candidate elected who
believes in the things we do unless we somehow manage to convince enough
average, everyday people out there that we're right, not about the
candidate, but about the issues.
sometimes in the morning when my clock radio goes off, i dream that i hear
cory flintoff start a news story like this: "president kerry today
announced..." and i smile. he may disagree with me on several very
important issues, but he's miles above bush, whose every utterance makes
me scream. kerry '04!

very unforunately this is not true at the presidential
level. the electoral college system of electing a
president is very effective at keeping anyone but
democrats or republicans from gaining office.
the candidate who receives a plurality of votes in
each state receives all of that state's electoral
votes.
presidential campaigns are exceedingly expensive to
wage. the democrats and republicans already possess
the lions share of the country's wealth and power. big
business lobbyists pour contributions into their
campaigns and they receive federal funds for their
candidates.
third parties generally do not have the power and
wealth necessary to win "the most votes" in a state,
which makes it near impossible to win the presidency.
recent examples are john anderson and ross perot who
each had over 10% of the popular vote, but had few or
no electoral votes.
and several times in american history, a president has
been elected with fewer votes than his opponent, as
apparently george bush did over gore in the last
election!
please continue to vote your conscience at every
level, but be aware that a vote for kuchinich, nader,
dean, or another third party candidate could make the
difference between bush remaining in office or not.
the democrats claim that nadar drew enough votes away
from gore to cost him the last election.

it was great to see ig finally appear on charlie rose tonight. the
interview started with a full version of perfect world that looked like
it was from the bottom line dvd that came with the atwli cd. there was
the usual banter about how they met and getting the band name from the
dictionary etc. amy talked about support from the "queer community".
i didn't realize she referred to it as queer. anyone know if there's a
reason behind that? i mean gay community always seems all encompassing
but who knows. i liked that they focused on that question because it
kind of validated a lot of the queer content of the list. amy said
that being a lesbian definitely matters in the progression of their
music etc. (at least that was the impression i got). with that said,
amy was pretty clear that she felt sexism also played a role in why
they don't get as much attention as other bands who aren't as good.
she even referred to herself as a more masculine woman.
they talked about their musical influences and their
songwriting/collaboration process. amy said neil young was her biggest
influence over the long haul with emily citing joni mitchell and stevie
wonder. had no idea about stevie. learn something everyday. amy also
talked about her dream of getting played on rock radio. and who know
amy lived in the woods by a river. sounds like paradise!
and my favorite part of the interview was in regard to voting and kind
of touched on the recent discussion right here. while both a and e
seemed to prefer kucinich or sharpton they (correctly in my opinion)
realize that the bigger goal of getting rid of bush is more important.
they commented again on being disappointed in kerry and how he isn't
radical enough, but clearly seemed to hint that they'd vote for kerry
to get rid of bush. i totally agree. this just isn't the election to
vote for your ideals as sad as that sounds. bush has to go and kerry
is the only guy who has a chance to get him out. glad my girls
concurred. just love em! greg

i kind of have the feeling that this was already
taped before the atwli release....and it was
so short (for charlie rose that is).....maybe about ten minutes? i
don't know what the deal
was regarding music...they didn't perform live.
they played perfect world dvd version....and
charlie did ask the questions about their sexuality but he put them in
the light of the bush administration.
when asked she said that she will do anything to get bush out of office
and has mixed feelings
abou kerry....he's not radical enough but that
because he's democrat he has to look moderate. emily said the same
thing. so it was great to see them on charlie rose finally.

oh and just so you know....i lost a very very sweet and loving friend

everyone's grandma. even if you weren't related she would treat you like
she
did all her grandkids.....she was very involved in
her church, and served as a pastoral care minister and deacon....she
never judged anyone.....gay,straight, christian,buddhist,jew.
she always marveled at how some people just don't get it.... we're here
to learn to love each other. rejecting a person for who they are in the
name of god is wrong.
her name is mabel schreck...if you pray..please remember her and her
family.
that said...... the charlie rose interview....i've been playing it
repeatedly for two hours, it's so refreshing to see the girls relaxed
and at ease......amy said, "i'm not gonna vote for bush.'
and i just have to laugh......as a die-hard fan,
i can just laugh at the idea of her supporting bush........that would be
funny as shit!! it would look so false!

actually queer is the "new all encompassing word" as many
transgendered people don't view themselves as gay or
homosexual, but they aren't "normal" (whatever that is) so they
identify with queer.
most my friends are "queer" in one way or another lol!

well, personally, i think there is a little more to it than the word
"queer" being the "in" word at the moment. "queer" was reclaimed by the
glbt community back in the early days of act up. the word itself is
more than just another way to say "gay" or "homosexual" or more than
just a term that includes transgendered people. there are greater
political implications behind the word "queer," than just being a
euphemism for "gay." you can be a woman who f-cks other women and not
necessarily identify as "queer," or as part of the "queer community." =20

i was told that some lesbians, gays, and bisexuals use the term "queer"
because
it's used as a negative word and they
want to "take it back, and turn it into
something positive" to take the sting
out of it.

yup, that's what i meant by "reclaim."
same with "dyke," "bitch," "slut," or any of those other
formerly-derogatory words we now use from a position of power.

and as amy said at the colorado springs show in november, you can be
straight and still identify as queer. politically and theoretically it
represents more than just sexuality. it deconstructs the so-called
"links" among sex, sexuality and gender (as well as recognizes the
multiple oppressions of race, nationality and class).

i personally prefer the term queer because i feel that
gay leaves out so much of our community. the word gay
is usually assumed to mean just gay men, depending on
the context. at most it only includes gay men and
lesbians. and it takes a really long time to say
lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, questioning,
curious for a while back in my early twenties, etc.
so i choose queer, when speaking politically. i stick
with gay for describing myself, though.

hi tom,
i'm certainly not going to roast you for having a differing opinion. i just
don't share it.
and chickenman? you've got to be kidding!
lauren
it always mystifies me how many people on this list say that emily was
originally the better songwritier and amy had to catch up. i've been
listening to 1989 and have introduced a bunch of people to ig over the
years. almost universally, we've agreed that amy is the better songwriter
and emily the better musician. every cd they've released has confirmed this
opinion for me. on rop, i finally thought emily caught up to amy and on so
they seemed pretty equal. but on shaming and atwli, amy seems to dominate
again (by is full of emily greatness). i just don't think anything emily has
ever written holds a candle to "strange fire," "chickenman," "land of
canaan," and "devotion." until i found this list, i don't think i had ever
heard that emily was the better songwriter of the two.
before i get slammed here, i'm not saying anything bad about emily. she's
awesome. she writes good songs ("the wood song" is the best moment of so,
imo), has a great voice, and plays a mean guitar--not to mention piano and
banjo. the whole of ig is definitely better than the sum of its parts.
cheers,
tom m.

hi all,
i was thinking about what i would say on this topic, then i remembered i'd
said it all before in a post to another list a while back. so i figured
i'd include it here in case anyone wants a slightly longer explanation for
choosing to use the word queer. this was written in response to a few
people within a blindness-related organisation i belong to, who objected
to some of us using the word queer.
hope this helps.
subject: bca-l: why queer? why not?
hi all,
i'm queer. i like the word queer. i deliberately use the word queer all
the time. and i'm hoping you'll take the time to read this e-mail and
understand why.
marco's first post on this topic where he talked about "gays and lesbians"
gives a clear demonstration of one of the reasons that i like queer. i am
convening the queer special-interest group and i am neither gay nor
lesbian. no, my being female does not proclude me from being gay. the
terms "lesbian" and "gay woman" are not interchangeable. lesbians broke
out of the gay label in the 70s making a subculture that some women did not
want to be part of. and some women still don't. the separation between
gay women and lesbians is the reason it's still common for the media to
talk about "gay men" rather than just gays.
i'm not gay or lesbian because i am attracted to more than one sex and/or
gender. you might like to put me in the bisexual category. sometimes i
do, but it's a term i'm using less and less. why? because it buys into the
assumption that there are only 2 sexes. it might make you more comfortable
to deny it but, like most things, sex is not simply a matter of black and
white. there are many shades of grey.
i have a friend who you might call bisexual who, when asked her sexual
orientation, simply says she loves people. there's a female american
commedian who tells the story of how she had only had sex with men until
she went on a cruise and got involved with a woman. she wondered if she
was straight or gay, and finally decided she was just slutty. some people
call themselves pansexuals, which i think is quite a lovely term - others
call themselves trysexuals, meaning they'll try anything.
i think of it like this: each person, consciously or not, has a list of the
characteristics that make people attractive to them and a list of
characteristics that they don't care about. you might, for example, be
attracted to someone who has long hair, but not care about what colour it
is. sex and/or gender is one of the characteristics i don't care about.
so that's g l and b. t as in transgender, of which transsexual and
intersex might or might not be subsets (depending on who you're talking to)
are people who have, or want to, change their sex or gender. this is an
issue separate from sexual orientation which is why that term is not
adequate to cover the whole community either.
people often leave q out of the alphabet soup, but increasingly there are
people who will only refer to themselves as queer and see braking it down
any further than that as not being relevant to them. just for your
information, people in the us use glbtq, but the q refers to questioning.
questioning is something i believe should not be relevant since people
don't question there heterosexuality, and so questioning, i think, degrades
the validity of anything that's not heterosexual and binary-gendered.
at the same time as being a specific label, queer is also an umbrella term
that includes all the nuances of g, l, b, t, q, and more.
to address stephen's question of why do people use queer while at the same
time there are things like the gay and lesbian mardi gras and the gay
olympics: i don't know the history of the gay games's title, but i do know
that the operational and planning aspects of mardi gras have a long history
of bisexual exclusion. this may have changed since the recent management
change. but titles that include gay and lesbian are becoming less common,
and are being replaced by queer.
it's true that one of the meanings of queer is strange or weird, but the
thing about words is that they evolve. and while i don't like to see words
being misused simply out of habbit like people using participate as a
sophisticated way of saying expect when in fact it means to do something in
expectation of, words are reappropriated by various groups for various
reasons. if, for example, person a says "i got a high distinction for my
assignment" and person b says "that's cool!" i'm sure we're all aware that
person b does not mean "that feels slightly warmer than cold". if someone
says they're queer and you think they must be strange, then maybe it's your
thinking, and not the word, that needs to change.
it's true also that the word queer was used in the past to insult those to
whom it refers. some people still use it that way. but there's a certain
empowerment that comes from reclaiming the word that has previously been
used to oppress and abuse you. and when people who are not queer want to
take that word away from the people who are, it's interesting to think
about why that might be. there are many possibilities - one of them being
that taking away the word might take away the empowerment.
lindsay is right - queer does emphasise difference, but i do not think
that is a negative thing. in fact, i think it is distinctly positive.
there was a time when, in order to have the slightest chance of being
accepted by those who are not queer, queer people tried to pretend that
there were in fact no differences between said groups. "we're just like
you" we said, "except that our partners are of the same sex. but other
than that we're exactly the same. we go to work, go out with are friends,
spend time with our partners, raise our families, etc." this is
true in the sense that queer people do all of these things, but our
experiences of doing them are completely different. no heterosexual person
will experience losing their job, being bashed, being abused for showing
affection towards their partner in public, being prohibited from visiting
their partner in hospital, or being refused ivf treatment, purely on the
basis of who they're attracted to, or which sex/gender they feel they are.
queer people have realised that saying "we're just like you" denies our
identity, and locks us into a set of values and expectations that we often
don't believe in, or even relate to.
it'd be like a blind person saying to someone who is not blind, "we're
exactly the same except that i can't see". we all know that's a load of
crap! whether we're walking to the shops, going for a job interview, going
to school or university, going to the beach, catching a train, or raising a
family, we know our experiences of these things are completely different to
people who aren't blind. what's the point in denying it? how does denying
it improve our situation? sure it might mean there's a possibility that one
or two more people might talk to us, but we'll still have an unemployment
rate that's more than triple that of people who are not blind, we'll still
miss a train because there was no announcement saying where it was going,
we'll still have our ability to raise a child questioned by the vast
majority of medical practitioners we meet, and so on. our problems won't
be solved. our situations won't be understood. we all know this because
we're members of an organisation that exists to resolve our problems and
increase other people's understanding of them. how could us saying we're
the same as everyone else possibly benefit anyone?
so yes, queer people are different, but i'd like to suggest that if you'll
only accept people because they are the same as you, you're missing out on
a wealth of knowledge and experience which will, at the very least, enrich
your existance. if you can put your prejudices and insecurities aside in
order to accept people who are different, it could make you a better
person.
i should say too that i am aware that there are people who i would put in
the queer category, that do not like the word queer. for some people i
suspect their reason for not liking it is that they are gay or lesbian, and
so have always been included in the various words and phrases that have
been used to describe their community. other people just plain don't like
the word. the nature of words dictates that this will always be the case.
you're never going to find a word that everyone is happy with, and that's
all there is to that.
finally, to those people who know someone who is queer but are not sure how
to refer to them, here's a novel idea: bloody well ask them. because, of
course, it's not just about what you say, it's also about how you say it,
and who you say it to.
another strategy would be to just shut up and listen, as challenging as
that might be for some of you. people generally talk about themselves in
the way they'd like other people to talk about them. if they're not
talking about their queerness, then maybe it's because your lack of respect
for their experiences and ways of talking about themselves have denied them
the opportunity to feel comfortable with you. or maybe they think it's
none of your business. after all, did you tell them that you're
heterosexual?
i know i think my queerness is not the business of anyone on this list, but
i offer it up anyway in the hope that you'll use it to stretch your
boundaries just a little. you simply don't have the right to demand that a
community that you are not part of should call itself something else, just
because what they've chosen to call themselves makes you a little
uncomfortable. and that's what's going on here, otherwise we would not be
having this discussion.
i hope you'll take this e-mail in the constructive spirit with which it was
meant.
cheers,
amanda.

escaping from lurkdom, and a self stated "amy" person...i think even amy
thinks emily is a better song writer. i mean...while devotion is an amazing song
and happens to be my licence plate...i dont think anyone could ever word
anything as well as emily. to back up my case please relisten to "love's recovery",
"deconstruction", "love will come to you", "ghost", "cold beer and remote
control", "power of two"...to name a few. emily has that classic songwriting
ability to put the "everyman's" thoughts into words. her use of imagery is
breathtaking. she is truely one of the greats of all time, with the likes of joni
mitchell, james taylor paul simom, and bob dylan. and while i agree that amy can
write a song...and probably has more to say on atwli than emily...and has
written some lyrics that have blown me away...overall there is just no contest.
imho...of course.

i absolutely agree. it's my only big issue with them. i love their music.
i love their shows. i have great appreciation for who each of them is in the
world.
but the shows are way too short, imo. i talked with amy about it a few years
back. even risked pissing her off a bit by pressing the isse. one of these
days i'll dig out exactly what she said. i have it somewhere or another.
me, i cut my teeth on the grateful dead (3-4 hour shows), springsteen (3 1/2+
for my first show), the who (3 hours plus on my first tour, now ~ 2 1/2), and
melissa etheridge (sometimes shorter, but this year almost 3 hours).
most bands, i'm bored after an hour. but with the who, ig, mle, and bruce, i
can never get enough, and ig don't even get close to satisfying.
lauren
well after looking at the setlists (thanks joey!) and thinking about my last
ig experience on the by tour, im kinda sorry to see they seem to be playing
90 minute sets.
i think 90 minutes is kinda cheap. they used to play for two hours. anyone
know what's up with this?
in comparison, recent shows ive been to:
steve earle: 2 hours and 20 minutes. (so fla)
lucinda williams: 2 hours and 35 minutes. (so fla)
wilco: 2 hours and 15 minutes. (so fla)
wilco (albeit in chicago for this one, their homebase) 3 hours.
dixie chicks: 2 hours and 15 minutes. (so fla)
springsteen: 2 1/2 hours (4 times on the rising tour, nj, sofla and nyc). 2
hours and 50 minutes. the rising closing show at shea in nyc.
u2: two hours on the all that we cant leave behind tour.
ticket prices-- for all but springsteen and u2, the prices were the same as
ig.

good morning kiddies,
just got home from st. louis and my ears are still ringing from the total rock experience of the indigo girls!! fantastic energy, probably the most rockin show i've seen them put on. power of two was the slowest moment of the evening and they got it out of the way early, though it really didn't dampen the energy as everyone in the room was screaming the lyrics! lots of good singing, as was commented by the girls. we were even allowed to sing one of the "fill it up again"'s - was surprised at how many sang that phrase being new and all.
as always, idiots screaming galileo from like the second song on!!!!!! uggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
probably incomplete and definetly not in order setlist:

fill it up again

love's recovery (wonderful)
get out the map
faye tucker (awesome)
shame on you - during which point brady blade and another man went around the stage mock sweeping and mopping - don't know why - don't think amy even noticed, emily smiled once. then, when em is supposed to give up her banjo, amy's guitar went out leaving only the accordion. once emily got her guitar, it wouldn't work either!!! they apologized afterwards and went through about two minutes of scratching their heads. both asked if we had any questions but it was far too loud and unruly to have any kind of q&a. finally everything was back in order and amy said that both of them having technical difficulties at the same time has never happened before! it was bizarre, you could tell amy was getting kind of anxious. we (michelle and i - hi michelle!!!) determined that the "cleaning crew" messed something up with their little play. they'll pay for it later :-)

no, i'm not, actually. "chickenman" is sublime. it is on the surface a
simple song, but it's lyrics have layers. it's a meditation on death, life,
the cost of living, and forgiveness. it's about the interconnectedness of
all things. it reaches down deep inside me and touches my soul on a level
that almost no other song does (others that do this are "strange fire" and
"winter" by tori amos). "chickenman" has made me laugh, made me cry, and
made me drive really, really fast. whenever i listen to it, i feel just that
much "closer to fine."
cheers,
tom m.

hmm. well many people do not fully appreciat their own gifts. i wonder what
emily thinks, not that it is terribly relevant.

this list doesn't contain any of my favorite emily songs, with the possible
exception of "love will come to you." several of the ones you list actually
have lines that annoy me ("not enough room in the world for my pain;" "so
we're okay, we're fine"), especially because these lines are in otherwise
good songs.
>ability to put the "everyman's" thoughts into words. her use of imagery is

i would say that emily is a great songwriter but amy straddles the border
between being a songwriter and being a poet. and i'd say the same about
amy's use of imagery--check out "dead man's hill," "fugitive," "world
falls," "walk away," and "chickenman." however, amy does use a more
impressionistic and abstract style that doesn't always depend on the
crispness of the image.
>write a song...and probably has more to say on atwli than emily...and has

>imho...of course.
again, i just never met an ig fan that preferred emily until i found this
list. i just assumed it was universal that amy was the better writer.
of course, this is all opinion and there is no right answer. that's what
makes the discussion fun.
cheers,
tom

winter definitely has the same "this is a really simple song on the
surface" but wrenches my heart - chickenman is the same way - though by the
time the soc's were popular, i'd think amy had did her best (red rocks
94!!!!! neil - i need dat cd!)
kidfears is also wicked sublime - as is prince of darkness and strange fire
- tho i think the metaphors in the later just make me ponder life....
...and all of rem's automatic for the people album....

before i found this list - i was waaay more an emily person - tho i am a
writer and write like amy - and i love amy's "capturing a moment and
emotion songs - amy has gotten way better songwriting wise - and i think
amy just has this all out raw emotion (ala cut it out - 4/12/97 - audio
doesnt do justice to what she sang that night - possibly the most
passionate moment i ever saw her do live.) that has caught up to her
songwriting - if that makes any sense -
let's just say her solo tour was a full circle for me as i love hardcore
punk, (fugazi, older precursers to emocore) and totally think her and the
butchies pulled it off.

mike, i totally agree. i used to be more of an "emily" person too but now
i've really grown to appreciate amy's song writing just as much if not more
than emily's (maybe because i'm a huge neil young fan too). we got to see
amy's solo tour in d.c. and it was without a doubt one of the best concerts
i've ever been to. 'stag' just all out rocks and in the end i'm much more of
a rocker than a folkie. amy and emily are like ying and yang to me. i love
them both and i don't get the opportunity to see them that often.
unfortunately, most of the times i get tired of hearing the same old concert
standards like po2. ctf, galileo, least complicated. for instance, i've
always wanted to hear virginia woolf but they always seem to play it the
concert before or after i get to see them. emily's songs are just so
beautiful and amy's really rock out. frankly, imho, the two of them
compliment each other like no other musical duo in popular music today.
that's why i love them so much!!!

hkfs,
so, i was all keyed up after watching my montana women's basketball team
almost knock off louisiana tech last night and i popped in "watershed" to
try to calm myself down...
here's a silly question to start out: what's your favorite "hair era" of the
girls. i was watching the video and they have all these different
hairstyles, so i'm sitting there at 1 in the morning, critiquing their
different hairstyles. my personal fave for emily is in the hammer & a nail
video. i just love her with the long, red hair. amy's harder...but i might
have to go with hammer & a nail as well. also enjoyed the braids she had
going on in seattle (and other places) in summer 2002.
and here's a question for those folks who pop up from time to time looking
for questions to ask the girls when they interview them for this, that, and
the other thing...on "watershed", amy talks about how she's not paranoid
about natural disasters and the like, but she's really uncomfortable with
"that moment" right after death when your life is leaving your body. being
that it's normal for people to think more about their own mortality as they
age, i'm wondering what her thoughts on that are now...if they've changed,
if she's more/less uncomfortable with that sort of thing, etc.
these are the things that come into my head. just thought i'd share...:0)
amy m.
